Thorin <<Voice>>: The First Age began with the Awakening of the Elves. Then Morgoth, one of the vala, became evil and Sauron another vala collaborated with him. Eventually Sauron became evil and went to Morgoth’s side. Morgoth went to Angband and set up his fortress there. He then went in Valinor and took the Silmarils and had Ungoliant, a great spider; destroy the two Trees of Light. Then the Noldor went to middle earth and proclaimed war and with them were the Edain. The Sindar stayed in the West. Eventually Morgoth was defeated and one of the Silmarils was taken away from him, but his lands, as well as most of Beleriand, had been destroyed and sunk under the sea in the heat of battle. Among his people that escaped destruction were Sauron and a Balrog who went and slept in the deeps under Caradhras in Moria. Then the elves founded the Gray Havens and Lindon. Then the Men or the Edain went to Numenor, an island the elves gave them for their aid. Sauron began the fortifying of Mordor and started to build Barad-Dur. Then Sauron won the elf smiths of Eregion and they began to forge rings. Then Sauron forged the One Ring and put it on. Celebrimbor, the main elf smith found out Sauron’s evil plans. So he gave the three rings to Gil-Galad, Galadriel, and Cirdan and they hid them. Sauron then invades Eriador and Rivendell is built. The Nine Rings are taken and the Ring-Wraiths are made. Then Sauron retreats back to Mordor and in Numenor Ar-Pharazon the King of Numenor, builds a great armament and sets sail and lands in Umbar. Then Sauron gives up and goes back to Numenor. He, a vala still, corrupts Ar-Pharazon and takes control in Numenor. Then Numenor assails Valinor, for Sauron tricked them to do so. Numenor is defeated and Sauron goes back to Mordor now in an evil shape. But to his dismay Elendil and his two sons Isildur and Anarion go to Middle Earth with some faithful men. Here Elendil rules a Northern Kingdom while his sons build and rule a Southern. Then Gil-Galad and Elendil go and defeat Sauron in the battle of the Last Alliance. Here Anarion, Gil-Galad, and Elendil are slain. Then Isildur with the Ring was slain in the Gladden Fields. Then his heirs ruled the Southern Kingdom named Gondor and the Northern Kingdom named Arnor for many years. Arnor was separated into three parts Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur. Then the Witch-King came to Angmar and destroyed Arnor but was driven from the North. Then Sauron calmed down a while and there were not many major battles. Then the Lonely Mountain Erebor was attacked by the Dragon Smaug and the dwarves and men of Dale all died. The rest of the dwarves went away to the Blue Mountains. But then a war was come to the dwarves of the Misty Mountains. The War began when the elderly exiled King Thrór wandered into Moria and was slain and his body mutilated by Azog the Goblin. The war was fought all over the Misty Mountains and the goblins had the worst of it. The last battle, before the east gate of Moria, initially went against the Dwarves, for the Orcs had the high ground and the greater numbers, and being a dark day in winter there was no sun to bother the goblins. The tide was only turned when a last contingent of fresh warriors from the Iron Hills, led by Náin son of Grór, arrived to reinforce the wavering Dwarves. Azog was slain by Dáin-Ironfoot, son of Náin, and his head stuck on a pike with the money bag, that Azog had given to the dwarves after the slaughter of Thrór, stuck inside the mouth. The Goblin-host suffered vast casualties with some 10,000 killed and the remaining remnant routed into Moria. After the battle, Thráin II son of Thrór wanted to enter Moria and reclaim it, but the Dwarves not of Durin's folk refused, saying they had honoured Durin's memory by fighting, and this was enough. What remained of Durin's folk could not alone muster a force strong enough to enter Moria. The Dwarves also feared the Balrog of Moria was still present. The war was also very costly for the Dwarf race, as more than half of those involved were killed. Thráin II himself lost an eye, and his elder son me, Thorin, earned my epithet "Oakenshield" after I used an oak branch to defend myself after being wounded. So the dwarves disbanded and returned to their homes. Thráin II my father, then went away to try and make it to our old home, Erebor, and we never heard of him again.

<< In the Blue Mountains Thorin and Co are there excepting Bilbo>>

<< Shows Thorin pointing on a map when it begins the great battle of the Misty Mountains and goes into>>

Thorin: That is what happened and where we are now. As I said before we must conquer Smaug.

Gandalf: Very good, but your own plans did not seem to me to consider this point. My plan is one of stealth. Smaug does not lie on his costly bed without dreams, Thorin. He dreams of dwarves. You may be sure that he explores his hall day by day, night by night, until he is sure that no faintest air of a dwarf is near, before he goes to sleep: also he keeps his eyes half open and his ears pricked for the sound or sight of dwarf feet.

Balin: You make your “stealth plan” sound as difficult and hopeless as any open attack. This is impossibly difficult.

Gandalf: Yes, it is difficult, but not impossibly difficult, or I would not waste my time here. I would say it was absurdly difficult. So I am going to suggest an absurd solution to the problem. Take a hobbit with you! Smaug has probably never heard of hobbits, and has certainly never smelt one.

Gloin: What; One of those simpletons down in the Shire? What use on earth, or under it, could he possibly be? Let Smaug smell as he may, the hobbit would never dare come within smelling distance of the dragon if he was new from the shell!

Gandalf: Now, now! That is quite unfair. You do not know much about the Shire folk, Gloin. I suppose you think them simple because they are generous and do not haggle; and think them timid because you never sell them any weapons. You are mistaken. Anyway, there is one that I have my eye on as a companion for you, Thorin. He is neat handed and clever, though shrewd, and far from rash. And, I think he has courage. Great courage, I guess, according to the way of his people. They are, you might say, “brave at a pinch”. You have to put these hobbits in a tight place before you find out what is in them.

Thorin: That test cannot be made and as far as I have observed, they do all that they can to avoid tight places.

Gandalf: Quite true, they are a very sensible people. But this hobbit is rather unusual. I think he could be persuaded to go into a tight place. I believe that in his heart he really desires to have, as he would put it, and adventure.

Thorin: Not at my expense! This is not advice it is foolery! I fail to see what any hobbit, good or bad, could do that would repay me for a day’s keep, even if he could be persuaded to start.

Gandalf: Fail to see! You would fail to hear it, more likely. Hobbits move without effort, more quietly than any dwarf in the world could manage, though his life depended on it. They are, I suppose, the most soft-footed of all mortal kinds. You do not seem to have observed that, at any rate, Thorin Oakenshield, as you tramped through the Shire, making a noise, I may say, that the inhabitants could hear a mile away. When I say that you would need stealth, I meant it: professional stealth.

Balin: Professional stealth? Do you mean a trained treasure-seeker? Can
they still be found?

Gandalf: I think so, for a reward they will go in where you dare not, or at any rate cannot, and get what you desire.

Thorin: A paid thief, you mean. That might be considered, if the reward
was not too high. But what has all this to do with one of those villagers? They drink out of clay, and they cannot tell a gem from a bead of glass.

Gandalf: I wish you would not always speak so confidently without knowledge. These villagers have lived in the Shire some 400 years, and they have learned many things in that time. They had dealings with the elves, and with the dwarves, a thousand years before Smaug came to Erebor. None of them are wealthy as your forefathers reckoned it, but you will find some of their dwellings have fairer things in them than you can boast here, Thorin. The hobbit that I have in mind has ornaments of gold, and eats with silver tools, and drinks out of shapely crystal.

Balin: Ah! I see your drift at last. He is a thief then? Is that why you recommend him?

Gandalf: A thief? Why yes, a professional thief, of course! How else would a hobbit come by a silver spoon? I will put the thief’s mark on his front door, and then you will find it. You must look for that door, Thorin Oakenshield! I am serious. Listen to me, Durin’s Folk! If you persuade this hobbit to join you, you will succeed. If you so not, you will fail. If you refuse even to try, than I have finished with you and will get no more advice or help from me until the Shadow falls on you!

Thorin: Very well, I will come. Some foresight is on you, if you are not merely crazed.

Gandalf: Good! But you must come with good will, not merely in the hope of proving me a fool. You must be patient and not easily put off, if neither the courage nor the desires for adventure that I speak of are plain to see at first sight. He will try to back out; but you must not let him.

Thorin: Haggling will not help him, if that is what you mean. I will offer him a fair reward for anything that he recovers, and no more.

Gandalf: There is one other thing; you must make all your plans and preparations beforehand. Get everything ready! Once persuaded he must have no time for second thoughts. You must go straight from the Shire, east on your quest.

Fili: He sounds a very strange creature, this thief of yours. What is his name, or the one that he uses?

Gandalf: Hobbits use their real names. The only one that he has is Bilbo Baggins

Fili: What a name! <<And then laughs>>

Gandalf: He thinks it very respectable. And it fits well enough; for he is a middle-aged bachelor, and getting a bit flabby and fat. Food is perhaps at present his main interest. He keeps a very good larder, I am told, and maybe more than one. At least you will be well entertained.

Thorin: That is enough! If I had not given my word, I would not have come now. I am in no mood to be made a fool of, for I am serious also. Deadly serious, and my heart is hot within me.

Gandalf: Look now Thorin. April is passing and spring is here. Make everything ready as soon as you can. I will ride on ahead to prepare the ground. Then we will all visit him on the following day. Agreed?

Thorin: Agreed. You will go on ahead and on Tuesday go up and place a visit for the next day. On Wednesday the 16th we will go in and convince him.

Gandalf: Good. Farewell! I will meet you at the Green Dragon Inn in Bywater on Tuesday at noon.

<<Shows Gandalf leaving to the Shire>>

<<Then shows Gandalf coming up the Hill to see Bilbo Smoking and reading>>

<<Before that Bilbo is getting his mail from the mail-man, Gandalf walks up>>

Bilbo: Good Morning.

Gandalf: What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or that you feel good this morning, or mean it’s a good morning whether I want it or not, or that it’s a morning to be good on?

Bilbo: All of them at once, and a very fine morning for a smoke of tobacco at of doors. Come and have a puff or have some of mine we have all the day before us and I don’t have any lack.

Gandalf: I don’t have time for them because I’m looking for someone to share an adventure, and it’s very difficult to find anyone.

Bilbo: I should think no in these parts. We are plain quiet folk and have no use for those nasty disturbing things, make you late for dinner they do! I can’t see what anyone sees in them. We don’t want any adventures here thank you. Even I would not go on an adventure because there so nasty. Now I don’t think I know your name?

Gandalf: Yes you do, I am Gandalf and Gandalf is me. To think that I should of lived to be good-morningded by Belladonna Took’s son as if I was selling buttons at the door!

Bilbo: Gandalf! Good gracious. Not that wandering wizard they speak of? Not the fellow who told such wonderful tales at parties? Not the man who used to do particularly excellent fireworks. They went up in great lilies and snapdragons and hung in the twilight all evening? Not the Gandalf who was responsible for all those quit lads and lasses going off into the Blue for mad adventures. I beg your pardon but I had no idea you were still in business?

Gandalf: Where else should I be? For your mother’s sake I give you what you asked for.

Bilbo: I beg your pardon I haven’t asked for anything.

Gandalf: Yes you have. You said “I beg your pardon”, which to me meant sorry for not coming on the adventure, so I’ll send you on this adventure. Very profitable and good for you I imagine.

Bilbo: <<Coughs>> How about coming to tea tomorrow, Wednesday. Good Morning. <<Goes inside>>

Gandalf: I’ll be there at tea time. <<Puts the thief mark on the door, laughs and walks away>>

It's pretty good. I like how you use lines out of the book, and the prolouge and the part with Gandalf, Thorin, and Co. It makes it easier for people who haven't read the Sil and TH to understand the story. (I'm not speaking from experience, I love the Sil and TH!)

Hi CAMB. I think starting it off with an intro is good but the first monologue is too long. Might overload the audience. All of these names would be new to most people.

Morgoth
vala
Angband
Valinor
Silmarils
Ungoliant
Noldor
Edain
Sindar
Beleriand
Lindon.
Eregion
Celebrimbor
Eriador
Ar-Pharazon
Valinor
Arthedain
Cardolan
Rhudaur
Erebor
Smaug
Dale
Blue Mountains
King Thrór
Azog the Goblin
Náin
Grór
Dáin-Ironfoot
Thráin II
Thorin

Quite a bit to swallow in 2 minutes.

<<Next day tea time Bilbo is setting the table for tea...1 cup and saucer>>
Bilbo: Ahh, tea time. Oh, I forgot about Gandalf.
<<Ring on the door bell. Sees all the dwarves>>
Bilbo: What the!
<<Runs inside and shuts the door on their faces>>
Gandalf: Get back here or I’ll break the door down. <<Bilbo opens the door>>
Bilbo: What may be your inquiries?
<<Thorin’s cloak flies into Bilbo’s face>>
Thorin: Thank you, Thorin at your service. <<And walks right in and goes to the table to eat>>
Dwalin: And Dwalin...
Balin: I am Balin...
Kili: And Kili...
Fili: I am Fili...
Dori: Dori...
Nori: Nori...
Ori: Ori...
Oin: Oin...
Gloin: Gloin...
Bifur: Bifur...
Bofur: Bofur...
Bombur: And Bombur. Hello, I’m hungry, I’ve journeyed far today you know, and food might...
Bilbo: Yeah, in the larder. I’ve got all you want.
Bombur: I can’t thank you for this kind deed. I...
Gandalf: Get inside you fool and please shut up about food...<<Bombur goes in>>He is one of those people scattered throughout the world that the only thing in life that is useful to them is food. And to say there is never enough for him, so be on the lookout for someone in the pantry.
Bilbo: I can tell; thanks.
<<They all go in and eat and have tea. Some talk quietly to each other. >>
Thorin: Now let’s clean up, and then will sing and then talk.
<<They bring away the dishes and clear the table they see Gandalf and Thorin blowing smoke rings, a cloud of them is over Gandalf’s head>>
Thorin: Now for some music! Bring in the instruments!
<<They bring in musical instruments>>
Thorin: Now let’s sing!
All Dwarves: Far over the misty mountains cold to dungeons deep and caverns old we must away ere break of day to seek the pale enchanted gold. The dwarves of yore made mighty spells, while hammers fell like ringing bells in places deep, where dark things sleep, in hollow halls beneath the fells. For ancient king and elvish lord there many a gleaming golden hoard, they shaped and wrought, and light they caught to hide in gems on hilt of sword. On silver necklaces they strung the flowering stars, on crowns they hung, the dragon-fire, in twisted wire; they meshed the light of moon and sun. Far over the misty mountains cold to dungeons deep and caverns old, we must away, ere break of day, to claim our long-forgotten gold. Goblets they carved there for themselves and harps of gold; where no man delves. There lay them long, and many a song was sung unheard by men or elves. The pines were roaring on the height, the winds were moaning in the night, the fire was red, it flaming spread; the trees like torches blazed with light. The bells were ringing in the dale, and men looked up with faces pale; the dragon's ire more fierce than fire laid low their towers and houses frail. The mountain smoked beneath the moon; the dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom. They fled their hall to dying fall beneath his feet, beneath the moon. Far over the misty mountains grim to dungeons deep and caverns dim we must away, ere break of day, to win our harps and gold from him! Far over the misty mountains cold to dungeons deep and caverns old we must away, ere break of day, to find our long-forgotten gold.
Thorin: Now I will speak <<Clears his throat>> Gandalf, dwarves, and Mr. Baggins we are met in the house of our friend and fellow conspirator, this most excellent and audacious hobbit all praise to his wine and ale. We are met to discuss are plans, ways, means, policies, and devices. We shall soon start on our long journey from which some or perhaps all of us accept our friend and counsellor the ingenious wizard Gandalf may never return. Our object is I take it well known to us all. To the estimable Baggins and Fili or Kili the younger dwarves they may require a brief description of our journey.
<<Bilbo screams...they carry him out>>
Gandalf: Excitable little fellow that gets queer fits, but is as fierce as a dragon in a pinch. Let’s bring him in the room over there.
Gloin: One shriek like that will wake the dragon and all his relatives and kill the lot of us it sounded like fright to me. If it had not been for the mark on the door I would have thought we came to the wrong house as soon as I set eyes on the little fellow bobbing and puffing on the mat I had my doubts.
Bilbo: Pardon me if I’ve overheard words that you were saying. I’m quite sure you’ve come to the wrong house also I saw no mark but as soon as I saw your funny faces on the doorstep I had my doubts. One thing to be sure is that the idea of never coming back startled me, and made me scream. Tell me what you want done and I’ll do it if I have to walk to the East of East or fight the wild Were Worms in the last Desert. I had a great Granduncle once Bullroarer Took, and…
Gloin: Yes, yes, but I was talking about you and there is a mark on this door the usual one in the trade. It means “Burglar wants a good job, plenty of excitement, and reasonable reward.” You can say Expert Treasure Hunter if you like.
Gandalf: Of course there is a mark I put it there myself because you asked me to find the 14teenth man for you. Just let any one of you say I chose the wrong man and you can start without a burglar. Now let’s have no more arguments. I have chosen Mr. Baggins. There is a lot more in him than you guess and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. Now Bilbo, fetch the lamp...This map was made by Thrór, you’re Grandfather Thorin.
Thorin: I know the mountain well enough and the lands about.
Gandalf: But there is one thing you have-not noticed and that is the secret entrance. You see this hand pointing to it from the other runes? That marks a hidden passage to the Lower Halls.
Thorin: It may have been secret once but how do we know that it is secret any longer. Smaug has lived there long enough now to find out anything there is to know about those caves.
Gandalf: He may but he can’t have used it for years and years, because it is too small. Five feet high the door and three may walk abreast say the runes, but Smaug could not creep into a hole that size even when young.
Bilbo: It seems a great big hole to me. How could such a door be kept secret from everybody outside?
Gandalf: In lots of ways. From what it says on the map I should guess there is a closed door which has been made to look exactly as the Mountain. Also I forgot to mention that with the map went a key. Keep it safe.
Thorin: Indeed I will. Now things begin to look more hopeful. So far we had no clear idea what to do. We thought of going east until the Long Lake. After that the trouble would begin. We might go from there up the Running River and to the ruins of Dale. But none of us liked the idea of the Front Gate because the dragon comes out far too often…unless he has changed his habits.
Gandalf: That would be no good unless you had a hero or warrior. That is why I settled on burglary especially since there is a side door.
Thorin: Very well supposing the burglar gives us some ideas or suggestions.
Bilbo: First I should like to know a bit more about things I mean about the gold and dragon how it got there and who it belongs to. I should like it plain and clear. Also I want to know about risks, expenses, remuneration and so forth. I mean what am I going to get out of it and am I going to come back alive.
Thorin: O very well, long ago in my grandfather Thrór’s time our family was driven out of the far north and came back with all our wealth and their tools to this Mountain on the map. But now they mined and they tunnelled and they made huger halls and greater workshops and in addition they found a good deal of gold and a great many jewels too. Anyway they grew immensely rich and famous, and my grandfather was King under the Mountain and treated with great respect by the mortal men who lived to the South and were gradually spreading up the Running River as far as the valley overshadowed by the mountain. They built the merry town of Dale there in those days. Kings would call for our smiths and reward even the least skilful most richly. Fathers would beg us to take their sons as apprentices, and pay us handsomely mainly in food which we never grew. Altogether those were good days for us and the poorest of us had money to spend and to lend and leisure to make beautiful things just for the fun of it not to speak of the most marvellous and magical toys the like of which is not to be found in the world now-a-days. So my grandfather’s halls became full of armour and jewels and carvings and cups and the toy market of Dale was the wonder of the North. Undoubtedly that was what brought the dragon. Dragons steal gold and jewels you know from men and elves and dwarves wherever they can find them and they guard their plunder as long as they live which is practically forever and never enjoy a brass ring of it. There were lots of dragons in those days and gold was getting sparse up there and destruction from dragons getting worse. There was a most greedy, strong, and wicked worm named Smaug and one day he flew off into the air and came south. The First we heard of it was a noise like a hurricane coming from the north, and the pine trees on the Mountain creaking in the wind. Some of the dwarves from a good way off saw the dragon settle on our Mountain in a Spout of flame I was one. He then burnt the woods. Then the Dragon routed the Halls and no one was left inside. He then destroyed Dale and the river rose up in steam. The few left outside wept and were unexpectedly joined by my Father and Grandfather. It seems they used this secret door. We then left and earned our living as best as we could. But we still mean to get it back and to bring our curses home to Smaug. I should like to know how the map and key came to you.
Gandalf: I was given it. Your Grandfather gave it to your Father before he died in Moria. Then your Father tried to get back to the Mountain. I don’t know how he got there but I found him in the Dungeons of the Necromancer. All he remembered was the map and the key. It was hard to find you for I only knew your name.
Bilbo: Hear, hear!
Thorin: Here what?
Bilbo: Here what I’ve got to say which is how about going east. Then have a look around for if you sit on the doorstep and think I daresay you’ll think of something. And let’s go to bed now for what about an early start and all that.
Thorin: Okay, let’s get to bed.
Bilbo: Well scatter about the house and find a place to sleep. There are two nice rooms for Thorin and Gandalf. I am to bed.
<<In the night Bilbo gets up>>
Bilbo: Wow I am thirsty. Might as well go to the kitchen and get a drink then go back to sleep.
<<Goes to the kitchen>>
Bilbo: What! A burglar! Stealing my expensive plates and dishes is he. Well he’ll get it. There’s a good thing that these dwarves came over. I’ll wake them up.
<<Goes to Thorin and Gandalf’s room>>
Bilbo: Wake up! Thorin, Gandalf.
Thorin: What are you doing you complete fool...What...
Bilbo: Sorry. A burglar is in the house.
Thorin: What!
Gandalf: Where! Wake up the others.
<<They go around waking the dwarves who get their knives>>
Thorin: Come on...I’ll knife him first.
<<They enter the kitchen to see a burglar and then>>
Thorin: You minion of evil, give up this wretched habit of stealing and hand the things you stole over, you’re surrounded.
Bombur: What are you talking about Thorin?
Thorin: Why you! What are you doing?
Bombur: I was...<<Mutters>>
Fili: Look! He has a cake in his hand. He really does deserve his hands cut off so he cannot eat any more...
Bilbo: ...And that was an extra cake I had for our journey...and he ate all but a piece of it!
Thorin: Why the filthy pig ought to be ashamed of its self!
Gandalf: Let’s go to bed. We are going to leave early. Remember to wake at six o’clock.
<<Next Morning Bilbo comes in and finds eggs on the table. He sits down to eat. >>
Bilbo: Good, they left without me. Even though they left the dishes at least I don’t have to go...<<Goes on eating and then sneezes>> Oh! There’s some left up my nose!
<<Starts picking his nose>>
Bilbo: Oh no! My finger is stuck. Help! Someone help! I...
<<Covers his nose>>
<<Gandalf walks in>>
Bilbo: Hello Gandalf. How’s it going with you? Would you mind I happen to be eating!
<<Pulls his finger out of his nose and it’s covered in you know what>>
Gandalf: What are you doing?
Bilbo: I umm was eating see the food? Well you walked in and startled me! <<Fake Laugh>>
Gandalf: Any way my dear fellow when are you going to come. They left you the message because they could not wait.
Bilbo: What message?
Gandalf: This one.
Bilbo: “Thorin and Co. To burglar Bilbo, for your hospitality our sincerest thanks and for your offer of professional assistance our grateful acceptance. Terms: Cash on delivery up to and not exceeding one fourteenth of total profits if any. All travelling expenses guaranteed in any event. Funeral expenses to be defrayed by us or our representatives, if occasion arises and the matter is not otherwise arranged for. Thinking it unnecessary to disturb your esteemed repose we’ve proceeded in advance to make requisite preparations and shall await your esteemed person at The Green Dragon Inn, Bywater at eleven A.M. sharp, trusting you will be punctual. We have the honour to remain yours deeply. Thorin and Co.”
<<Bilbo reads aloud>>
Gandalf: Get moving you have ten minutes before it turns 11:00 clock.
Bilbo: But…
Gandalf: No time for it. Get going.
<<Bilbo runs off to Bywater. He sees the dwarves on ponies... >>
Thorin: Here he is… let the journey begin.

Just a note: I know I have been using the book mainly for the script, but later in the script I have used more of my own lines and scenes. Thank you for taking your time to read this and comment.

Thank you all for your comments...Here is the next part of the script.

<<Shows them along the road...now under some fir trees>>

Gloin: This fire is not lighting

Oin: So what it’ll never light its pouring and howling out there...

<<Ponies run away Fili and Kili almost drown trying to save them and the baggage>>
...And now that we’ve lost all our ponies and not to mention most of our food and luggage I’d say we have all the bad luck that could ever come upon us in the middle of nowhere.

Dori: Gandalf’s gone!

Nori: He never said he was coming all the way.

Oin: And just when a wizard would have been most useful too. He could have used some darn magic and light the fire!

Balin: A light...

Several Voices: Where?

Balin: There!

Dori: Who’ll check it out...someone has to.

Thorin: The expert burglar could...You Hobbit...Go and check out that light in the distance.

Bilbo: I, umm...

Thorin: ...Okay, if you need help hoot twice like a barn owl and once like a screech owl and we’ll do what we can.

Bilbo: I...

Thorin: Go!

Bilbo: Okay...Okay. <<Muttering to himself>> But I don’t know how to hoot like any owl, well here goes.

<<Goes to a hill, up it and then here are 3 trolls at hand>>

Bert: Nutton but mutton to eat and blimey it don’t look like nutton but mutton again tomorrow.

Tom: Never a blinking bit o man flesh have we have for long enough.

Bill: Shut your mouth. Ye ate a whole village and a half when we came down from the mountains.

Bert goes to get a drink with Tom… Bilbo takes bill or William’s pocketbook

Bill: I copped something. What are you?

Bilbo: A bur…a hobbit. <<Bilbo tries to hoot. >>

Bill: A burrahobbit.

Bert: Can you cook ‘em?

Bilbo: No, but they can cook.

Tom: Hey are there more like you roundabouts.

Bilbo: Yes. I mean no, none at all. I’ll cook you an excellent meal if you just let me go.

Bill: Let him go.

Tom: Not till e tells by what yes and no means.

Bill: No, I caught him anyways.

Tom: You’re a fat fool Bill.

<<Fight comes while Balin walks in. >>

Balin: what’s going on?

Tom: Look! There’s a dwarf! Get ‘im. <<Ignores Bilbo now>>

<<Balin has a sack put over him, darkness. Thorin comes in the rest of the dwarves are in sacks >>

Tom: Look...One more dwarf!

Thorin: Okay, you want a fight...Here we go!

<< Takes a stick and burns Bert’s Eye. Now is fighting Bill>>

Bill: A sack Tom quick!

<<Tom comes up and puts a sack on Thorin>>

Bert: Now we got 13 dwarves. Let’s roast them.

Bill: No let’s sit on ‘em one by one and squash ‘em to jelly!

Tom: Let’s boil ‘em in a pot.

<<Bert and Bill start name calling; and then fight. Scene switch...Now... >>

Tom: Stop it the night’s getting on let’s get done with it. If you two won’t stop this fighting the dwarves will escape or something!

Bill: How dare you. You let the dwarves escape!

Tom: No!

Bill: Then you lied!

Tom: No! I just want to boil ‘em.

Bill: You’re right, Bert I’m sorry for the fight, let’s just boil ‘em.

Bert: Alright; But...

Gandalf: Dawn take you all and turn you to stone. Excellent!

<<Gandalf comes and takes them out of the sacks>>

Balin: What happened?

Gandalf: I made the trolls fight until morning, which is when they turn to stone. They fought all night!

Thorin: Thanks for the help.

Gandalf: I say the trolls must have a cave to hide in. Let’s find it.

Bombur: Then breakfast.

<<They go up a path until they find a door>>

Gandalf: Ah here it is…and here is the key.

<<Gandalf opens the door and they go in. >>

Gandalf: Let’s look around. Thorin here are good blades.

Thorin: You’re right. They are, but what do the runes say.

Gandalf: Don’t know, but we will find out eventually.

Bilbo: Look Gandalf this one must have been a pocket knife for a troll.

Gandalf: Actually, I think it was a stolen blade, but would have made a pocket knife for one of them.

Thorin: Let’s hide this treasure, men and move on.

<<They go out. Now they are by the campfire hiding a bag of treasure. >>

Thorin: Good, it doesn’t look like there’s treasure there. Well let’s get going. Breakfast is while we walk.

Bombur: Darn!

Gandalf: We are heading for Rivendell, a long walk, so let’s start it.

<<Shows them on the road>>

Bilbo: Is that The Mountain?

Balin: No! Those are only the beginning of the Misty Mountains. And we have to get over or under those somehow before we get to the other side. And it’s a deal longer from there to the Lonely Mountain where Smaug lies on our treasure.

Gandalf: Look

Nori: Where?

Gandalf: Look there, it seems to be a path going down. This is the path to Rivendell. Another thing to note is that we will be welcome and expected. Before when you met the trolls, I was scouting the road ahead. There I met some of Elrond’s people. I told them of our journey. Then they told me of the trolls and from hence I made my way to them. Well let’s speed up the pace.

I would like comments please. But it is your choice to comment.Well...

<<Shows them going down then it goes to the House of Elrond and>>

Elrond: Welcome to the Imladris, the Last Homely House East of the Sea.
Dwarves are seldom seen in these regions...and so are hobbits for that matter.

Gandalf: Thank you my friend, Elrond, Lord of Rivendell.

Elrond: I know of your plight. Come inside and let us eat. Supper has been prepared.

Thorin: Food sounds good, on my empty stomach. Thank you for your hospitality!

<<They go inside and then it shows them eating>>

Elrond: Now you said that you had some swords to show me. It is a good time to see them because since the stomachs are full, rest is the next part of our meal.

Thorin: Here is mine. (Handing his sword to Elrond as does Gandalf)

Gandalf: And mine.

Elrond: Hmm your two swords came out of Gondolin. Thorin yours is named “Orcrist the Goblin Cleaver”. Gandalf’s is named “Glamdring the Foe Hammer”. Keep them well. Dinner is over. You may prepare for bed or enjoy a walk. Do as you will. Gandalf and I must talk.

<<Elrond and Gandalf go off talking>>

Thorin: Bilbo, here is the map we were talking about at your home as you can see...What! These are moon letters! Dwarves look at this! Someone inform Gandalf and Elrond of this!

Gloin: Masters, come look at this now. <<This is to Gandalf and Elrond. They look at each other and ignore Gloin. He goes back to Thorin. >>

Gloin: Thorin, they are ignoring me!

Thorin: Why then throw this candle on the floor and make them believe there’s a fire! Distract their attention, make them run over here, and then we will show them that they were wrong and that we were right.

Gloin: I beg your pardon, but?

Thorin: We were right; they should have come over here in the first place.

Gloin: Oh, Alright. <<Takes a candle and throws it. Now>>Gandalf, Elrond, fire!

<<Both Gandalf and Elrond scream “where?” and come over>>

Gloin: Tricked you. But Thorin told me to do it.

Gandalf: If Thorin told you to jump off the Mountain peak would you do it?
<<Turning to Thorin>>Why you miserable creature.
<<Grabs Thorin by the top of his shirt who hands the map to Bilbo>>

Gandalf: ...What is the meaning of this?

Thorin: Well I found something important and you ignored us so I needed to make a distraction to your conversing and this was at hand for an idea!

Elrond: What is this important thing?

Thorin: Why the moon letters. <<Takes the map and hands it to Elrond>> Look for yourself!

Elrond: There are moon letters!

Bilbo: What are moon-letters?

Elrond: Moon letters are letters you can only see by the same shape of the moon and day it was written. This letter must have been written on a Midsummer’s Eve in the light of a full moon. It reads, “Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks and the last ray of the setting sun shall shine upon the keyhole”. Here Thorin take your map. Now I must say it is time to sleep. Tomorrow you shall go into the mountains and it will be Midsummer’s Day. Gandalf come with me I think we should take counsel on what you are going to do tomorrow, the others may go to sleep; my sons will take them to their rooms.

Gandalf: I shall come with you. And then I will sleep.

<<Next Morning they are about to leave>>

Elrond: Farewell. If ever you wander this way again back from barren lands and the mountains you seek, you will find this house and its doors open and welcome.

Gandalf: Farewell. If ever you meet these dwarves again one of them may be rich.

<<They leave and go up the hill...shows them near some mountains, now it shows them in them>>

Thorin: This thunderstorm is killing us. If don’t get blown off or drowned down there or struck by lightning we shall be picked up by a stone giant and kicked high sky for a football.

<<They all stop walking>>

Gandalf: Well if you know of anything better take us there.

Thorin: Well, let’s rest here.

Gandalf: No let’s go on we might meet a cave.

Thorin: Okay. Let’s send Fili and Kili go.

Gandalf: Fine, if they die we’ll blame their deaths on you...How about that.

<<Grunt from Thorin>>

Thorin: Fili and Kili. You both have sharp eyes. You are to search for a cave. You shall usually get these sort of jobs because you are younger than most of us dwarves by some fifty years and because everyone can see it is no use sending Bilbo. There is nothing like looking if you want to find something, you certainly usually find something if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after. Now go. We have to wait for you to return before going on.

Fili: We’ve found a dry cave not far round the next corner.

Kili: And ponies and all could get inside.

Gandalf: Have you thoroughly explored it?

Kili: Yes, yes.

Fili: It isn’t all that big, and it doesn’t go far back.

Thorin: Okay then. Everybody get up and prepare to move.

<<They walk along cliff to a cave>>

Gandalf: Fine, just fine. Not too large, but still I would be cautious caves
can be somewhat dangerous when they are big and go back far. Prepare a fire and let’s eat.

<<They start a fire, eat, and then drop off asleep one by one>> <<Next
they’re seen in a dark hall>>

Bilbo: What. Where am I?

Dori: We were knocked out by Goblins during the night and taken prisoner.

Ori: Yes, but what’s weird is that Gandalf isn’t here.

Nori: I think he wasn’t there when we were caught.

Dori: Or got killed.

Ori: Or escaped.

Nori: Maybe. But we should pay more attention to the guards who are still talking about us over with their Great Goblin...

Great Goblin: Shut up you creature or I’ll cut your throat off! Who are these miserable persons?

Goblin: Dwarves, and this. We found them sheltering in our front porch.

Great Goblin: Up to no good I warrant. Spying on the private business of my people I guess, thieves I shouldn’t be surprised to learn, murderers and friends of elves not unlikely. Come, what have you got to say!

Thorin: Thorin the dwarf at your service. Of the things which you suspect and imagine we had no idea at all. We sheltered from a storm in what seemed a convenient cave, unused. Nothing was further from our thoughts than inconvenience with Goblins in any way whatever.

Great Goblin: Hmm. So you say. Might I ask what you were doing up in the mountains at all and where you were coming from, and where you were going to. In fact I should like to know all about you not that it will do you much good, Thorin Oakenshield I know too much about your folk already, but let’s have the truth, or I will prepare something particularly uncomfortable for you.

Thorin: We were on a journey to visit our relatives, our nephews, our nieces, and first, second, and third cousins and the other descendants of our grandfathers who live on the East side of these truly hospitable mountains.

Goblin: He is a liar, O truly tremendous one! Several of our people were struck by lightning in the cave when we invited these creatures to come down with us, and now they are as dead as stone and also they have not explained this! <<Pulls out Orcrist>>

Great Goblin: Murderers and Elf Friends! Curse them, slash them, beat them, bite them, knife them, take them to dark holes full of snakes and never let them see the light again. We shall eat them. You nasty little things!

<<The Great Goblin rushes to Thorin to kill and eat. The lights go out. Flashes of lightening>>

Gandalf: Run, Thorin get up. Here take your sword. (Gives Thorin Thorin’s sword after breaking their chains) Run! Fly! Down this passage!

Bilbo: Ouch. Help Dori. My ankle it’s twisted.

Dori: Get on my back. Look out there is no wall on our left...Gandalf! Help! Goblins! <<Drops Bilbo who rolls to the edge of the cliff>>

Gandalf: Fight. <<They kill some and the rest fly after Gandalf sends a blinding flash>> Follow me everybody.

<<As the Goblins run, they step on Bilbo’s hands and he falls off the cliff>>

...I don't know why, but i did shorten Rivendell, but kept the main part...

Bilbo: What! Where, oh, yeah, I fell off the cliff. I have no pipe or handkerchief so now what. What’s this, a ring? (Picks up ring) Well might as well go on. No way, left or right so I guess forward.

<<Goes on to a lake which has an island for Gollum>>

Gollum: <<Hisses>> what are you, precious?

Bilbo: (jumps) a hobbit named Baggins.

Gollum: Perhaps it likes riddles, does it, precious?

Bilbo: Yes to a certain degree.

Gollum: Yes, yes Precious. “What has roots as nobody sees is taller than trees, up, up, up it goes, and it never grows.”

Bilbo: Easy, Mountain I suppose.

Gollum: Does it guess easy, you must have a competition with us my precious, if precious asks and you don’t answer we eats you my precious, if you asks us and we doesn’t answer then we dos what it wants, we shows it the way out, yes?

Bilbo: Alright, I’ll ask first. “Thirty white horses on a red hill, first they tramp then they stamp then they stand still.”

Gollum: Chestnuts, chestnuts. “Voiceless it cries, wingless flutters, toothless bites, mouth less mutters.”

Bilbo: Half a moment… wind, wind of course. “An eye in a blue face saw an
eye in a green face, that eye is like to this eye said the first eye, but in low place not in high place.”

Gollum: Ahh… hmm. Ssss my precious, Sun on the daisies it means it does. “ It cannot be seen cannot be felt, cannot be heard cannot be smelt, it lies behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills, it comes first and follows after, ends life kills laughter.”

Bilbo: Dark! “A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid.”

Gollum: Ahh… hmm my precious… give us a chance…eggs, eggs it is. “Alive without breath, as cold as death, never thirsty ever drinking, all in mail never clinking.”

Bilbo: Hmm… half a moment I just gave you a chance. <<Gollum comes near Bilbo and steps on a fish which jumps>> Aha, fish, it is fish.

<<Gollum goes back angry>>

Bilbo: “No legs lay on one leg, two legs sat near on three legs, four legs got some.”

Gollum: Easy it is. Fish on a little table, man at table sitting on a stool, the cat has the bones...My turn Precious. “This thing all things devours, birds, beasts, trees, flowers, gnaws iron, bites steel grinds hard stones to meal, slays king ruins town, and beats high mountain down.”

Bilbo: Give me more time.

<<Gollum comes near Bilbo>>

Gollum: You cheatsis, cheatser you are precious.

<<Gollum stays near Bilbo which frightens Bilbo>>

Bilbo: I can’t um think with you right…

Gollum: Ask us ask us, my precious.

Bilbo: Hmm (putting his hand in his pocket) what have I got in my pocket?

Gollum: Not fair, not fair, it isn’t fair, my precious, to ask us what it’s got in its nasty little pockets. It must give us three guesses, my precious.

Bilbo: Alright. Guess away.

Gollum: Hands.

Bilbo: Wrong. Guess again.

Gollum: Knife.

Bilbo: Wrong, last guess. (After Gollum squirms and rocks and rolls all over) I’m waiting.

Gollum: String or nothing.

Bilbo: Both wrong. (Stands up and takes out his sword and goes backward)

Gollum: before we goes, my precious, we must go and get some things first. Yes, things to help us.

<<Gollum exits Bilbo sits. Gollum shrieks>>

Gollum: Where is it, where is my precious. It’s lost precious...after all these ages and ages it’s gone our birthday present, it’s lost Gollum it’s lost. (Gollum weeps a gurgling sound)

Bilbo: What did you lose?

Gollum: What has it got in its pockets?

Bilbo: What did you lose?

Gollum: What has it got in its pockets...? I’ll get you for this.

<<Bilbo runs trips and falls then Gollum passes him and stops>>

Bilbo: What, Gollum can see in the dark, but this ring, could it be that it makes you disappear?

Gollum: Yes, yes, it must have found it my precious but it probably went out here, the back door and has got away. But goblins up there I smell them. Ahh, Ssss, Gollum, Goblins might get it and come down here sneaky and tricky and catch us because no one will see him not even our clever eyes.

Bilbo: What, it does make you disappear. I’ll have to jump over him to escape.

<<He jumps over Gollum>>

Gollum: What! I missed him that Thief, Baggins, Cheater. We hates and curses it we hates it forever!

<<Bilbo keeps running until he comes to goblins>>

Goblin Captain: Get ‘im get ‘im. Kill him and crush ‘im. Look out for the door! (Goblins rush to Bilbo who puts on the ring then the Goblins rush around in amazement and go wild) (Bilbo rushes through the midst of them and then bursts his buttons while squeezing through)
Goblin Captain: By the door there’s a shadow!

<<They rush out Bilbo is gone and stop to pick up the brass buttons>>

<<Shows Bilbo going along until he hears voices in some thickets has ring on >>

Gandalf: After all he is my friend and not a bad little chap I feel
responsible for him. I wished a goodness you had not lost him Dori.

Dori: Humph. Why did we ever have to bring him at all? Why can’t he stick to his friends and come along with them and why, you, Gandalf hadn’t brought along someone with more sense. He’s been more trouble than use so far. If we have to go back in to those abominable tunnels than, drat him I say.

Gandalf: I brought him, and I don’t bring things that are of no use. Either you help me to look for him or I go and leave you here to get out of the mess as best you can yourselves. If w can only find him again you will thank me before all is over what ever did you go and drop him for then run, Dori?

Dori: You would have dropped him if a Goblin had suddenly grabbed your leg from behind in the dark, tripped up your feet, and kicked you in the back.

Gandalf: Then why didn’t you pick him up again?

Dori: Good Heavens, can’t you ask Goblins fighting and biting in the dark everybody falling over bodies and hitting one another. You nearly chopped off my head with Glamdring and Thorin was stabbing here and there and everywhere with Orcrist and then all of a sudden you gave one of your blinding flashes and we saw the Goblins running back yelping. You shouted follow me everybody and everybody ought to have followed we thought everybody had there was no time to count, as you know quite well, till we had dashed through the gate guards, out of the lower door and ran in confusion down here...And here we are, without the burglar, confusticate him.

<<Shows Bilbo running trips on a stone and comes crashing on the ground in front of Gandalf>>

Bilbo: And here’s the burglar! <<Takes the ring off>>

Balin: Where’d he come from? I didn’t even see him coming!

Gandalf: What, my gracious. What a friend. First he makes us feel sorry for him and then falls right!

Bilbo: Well you see I was running so as not to be caught by the Goblins when I ran out of the gates.

Gandalf: You got lost when they attacked us running in the mountains.

Bilbo: That’s true.

Gandalf: When you fell we killed and scattered the goblins and ran on until we came out the same door you came out of. And we are quite lucky not having to go back and look for you.

Bilbo: Well after I fell I awoke some time later. I then decided to try and escape the dreadful darkness. I eventually found a lake. There lived a creature called Gollum. He and I played a riddle game. I won because he couldn’t guess what I had in my pocket in three goes. He went after me to kill me and I ran. But then I tripped and I thought I was a goner but he missed me in the dark. Then I jumped over him and into a side passage in the wall. I ran on and out of the gates.

Dori: What about the guards weren’t there any?

Bilbo: Oh yes, lots of them; but I dodged them. I got stuck in the door, which was only open a crack, and I lost lots of buttons, but I squeezed through alright and here I am.

Gandalf: What did I tell you! Mr. Baggins has more about him then you guess. Well I might guess you want to know what happened to us.

Bilbo: Yes indeed. Shall we not be going on?

Gandalf: Yes let’s. It’s getting dark out now. The goblins will soon be out in great numbers to look for us, it is said they will journey far to avenge a great captain or lord of theirs.

<<Shows them walking along a slope>>

Bifur: Bombur! What are you doing?

Bombur: I um...uh...well...

Bifur: Bombur you’re eating again you just ate an hour ago!

Bombur: I’m sorry for taking it out of your; I mean you know eating it and all. <<Fake laugh>>

Bifur: <<Looks in his pack>> Bombur you fool! Eating out of my pack again are you! You should learn to behave yourself these days. Just because I’m your cousin doesn’t mean I should be your victim. Go and bother your brother Bofur.

Bombur: Okay! <<Cheerfully...and noisily shows Bombur going into Bofur’s Pack>>

Bifur: I always knew he would come to be a bad thief...

Bofur: No Bombur no! Not again.

Bifur: ...What a gross life!

<<Shows them going along again; now they’re in an open circle surrounded by trees>>

<<Wargs howling>>

Gandalf: We are almost through this little forest, but it seems we are trapped listen to the howling. Wargs! Up the trees quick, up the trees or get eaten alive!

<<Bilbo and Dwarves all swarm up a thin tree then>>

Thorin: Bombur no, don’t climb up the tree. No...

<<Bombur climbs up the tree but brings it down and the dwarves with it >>

Thorin: Bombur <<Grunts>> nice work. Everyone go up separate trees!

<<They all go up the trees>>

<<Gandalf shoots fire at all the Wargs who put the forest on fire>>

<<Goblins come up eventually and start climbing the trees while the Dwarves defeat them and throw them off. The Goblins do the fire plan...Gandalf disappears>>

Thorin: Gandalf is gone! The goblins must have slain him...We are burnt meat for the goblins to feast upon!

Goblin: Fifteen birds in five fir trees, their feathers were fanned in the fiery breeze! But, funny little birds, they had no wings! Oh what shall we do with the funny little things? Roast ‘em alive or stew them in a pot; fry them, boil them and eat them hot? ...Fly away little birds! Fly away if you can or you’ll get roasted in your nests!

Thorin: Go away! You can’t kill us or burn us in your pots!

Goblin: Burn, burn tree and fern! Shrivel and scorch a fizzling torch, to light the night for our delight. Bake and toast ‘em, fry and roast ‘em till beards blaze and eyes glaze; till hair smells and skin cracks, fat melts and bones black. In cinders that lie beneath the sky so dwarves shall die! And light the night for our delight!

Bilbo: This is our doom Thorin, wouldn’t you...?

<<Bilbo looks up because of a great wind like noise and sees no dwarves >>

Bilbo: Thorin! Dwarves! Where are you?

<<He slips and catches on fire>>

Bilbo: Help!

<<Shows an Eagle swoop by and pick up Bilbo on the ground. Goblins throw their spears at the Eagles and run away. Shows the rest fly off with the Company and goblins being killed by the Eagles>>

Thank you. Here is the next part.

<<Shows them on a stone cliff eating by a fire Bilbo awakes>>

Bilbo: Where I am? Gandalf! Dwarves! What happened to you?

Gandalf: You awake at last! Come over and eat. <<He comes over and eats>> If you would like to know what happened, here it is in full. While you were fighting the Goblins up in the trees and then watched them start their <<stutters>> “fire plan”, as it seems, the great Eagle, Gwahir, the Lord of the Eagles, came down and rescued me from the fire. You see I healed his wing from an arrow when we were younger so he decided to repay me. So then when you were watching the Goblins later the Eagles picked up the Dwarves. Then they saw you falling, burning and one picked you up and flew away here to their homes. He put out your fire and saved your life. If you want to know where they are now I’ll tell you. They went back to the woods and scattered the Goblins and Wargs and are killing as many as possible.

<< Shows them some more...now shows them about to sleep>>

Bilbo: I think I will to bed I am very sleepy. Good-Night!

Gandalf: You should. Good-Night!

<< Bilbo awakes and is being carried by the Eagle.>>

Bilbo: Where am I?

Eagle: I am carrying you to the Carrock. There I will leave you and your folk to your own fate and luck.

Bilbo: It is some view up here.

Eagle: Yes it is. There is the Carrock, I flying low to the ground.

<< They fly to the ground. Gwahir and Gandalf talk. >>

Gwahir: Farewell wherever you fare, till your eyries receive you at the journey’s end!

Gandalf: May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks.

<< The Eagles fly away. >>

Gandalf: We are almost before Mirkwood Forest! Let’s head on!

<< Shows them going along by a river now in a country and Gandalf is speaking>>

Gandalf: But I must say I have some urgent business away South and I need to leave you, but we need help and so I can help you out of your present situation. I know someone who can help. I might want to give an explanation of him. He can change his skin to a bear, he gets mad easily and, his name is Beorn. His house is around the bend and a little off. Stay here and come to the house about every time I whistle, in pairs of two. Bombur, your last! <<Chuckles>>

Bilbo: Why are you laughing Gandalf?

Gandalf: << To Bilbo>> Bombur is last because he is quite fat, and to say it seems he is always last.

<<Gandalf and Bilbo go on ahead>>

Gandalf: Hello sir, my name is Gandalf the Wizard if you have heard of me I know you well by sight seen you a few times wandering, sorry to bother but I’m in need of help me and my companion, I’ll tell you my story if you like.

Beorn: Gandalf? Oh, I used to know your cousin Radagast the Wizard well I know you now, or who you say you are, but if you want to tell a story come and tell it. Let us go inside the house by the porch! But why are you so thin?

Gandalf: We have had some bad time with Goblins and...

Beorn: Your enemies of the Goblins! Well come right in!

Gandalf: Okay...! It started when I went over the mountains with a friend or two…

Beorn: Two! I only see one and a little one at that.

Gandalf: May I give a call when a might?

Beorn: Sure, if you want, but if it brings bad news you’re in trouble!

<<Thorin and Dori come in>>

Beorn: One or three companions I see you meant!

Thorin: Thorin Oakenshield at your service.

Dori: Dori at your service.

Gandalf: Well we travelled until we met a thunderstorm and took shelter in a cave with our troop of ponies…

Beorn: Troop of ponies! What were you a travelling circus or did you carry lots of goods?

Gandalf: Well there are two more I believe Balin and Dwalin are there names. <<Calls>>

<<Balin and Dwalin enter and bow this way and that>>

Beorn: A travelling circus was right a fine comic one. Come in my merry men and sit down. I don’t need your service but your names.

Balin: Balin...

Dwalin: ...And Dwalin here.

Beorn: Well, well on with the story!

Gandalf: <<Clears his throat>>Well goblins attacked us; I killed some with a flash and went into the hole before it shut. I followed them till I came to a ring filled with goblins. I then used magic and killed the Great Goblin, and then ran off. Soon goblins attacked us the hobbit fell off a cliff we rushed through the gate and ran into some bushes where we were unexpectedly joined by the hobbit. I, with the crowd of us…

Beorn: Crowd! What? Would you please call...? Here we are four more. Hello, tell me your names and sit down.

Nori: Nori...

Ori: Ori...

Oin: Oin...

Gloin: And Gloin.

Gandalf: Well as I was saying we rejoiced but then walked on. We came to a ring circled with trees and a howl arose that was answered by another on the right a good deal closer. It was Wargs. I had everyone climb trees.
<<Calls>> Wait Fili and Kili, who have not ventured to meet you, are right here.

Kili: Kili at your service.

Fili: and Fili.

Gandalf: The whole packs of Wargs came and set guards at the trees while the rest sat in the circle with their chief. Listening to their talk I found out that a raid had been planned that night with the goblins. I threw some magical fire at them which set the woods alight in several places. When the goblins came they fed the fires to head it down to the trees we were in. They sang songs about us “Fifteen birds in five fir trees” and…

Beorn: Goblins know how to count so there must be more jack-in-the-boxes still lurking about I can probably guess. Aha here are some more.

Bifur: Bifur at your service.

Bofur: Bofur at your service.

Bombur: And me!

Bifur: My cousin Bombur. You may want to watch out for your pantry at night or day. You might find him in there, he is a regular pig I’ll warrant and will take a snatch at the food if there is no one looking.

Beorn: Okay; very well. And since goblins know how to count we can at last finish this story without anymore interruptions.

Gandalf: Yes we may; but then the Great Eagles came to our rescue because I healed their king once. They flew us to their aeries and we slept there and then this morning brought us to the Carrack that rock in The Great River, and walked from there to here.

Beorn: Well your story may not be true, but all the same you deserve a dinner for it and bed. Let us eat!

<<They eat then Beorn leaves>>

Beorn: My guests please do not go outside until dawn on your peril! Good Night!

Thorin: Good night...I suggest a song, and then sleep!

<<The dwarves all consent>>

All Dwarves: The wind was on the withered heath, but in the forest stirred no leaf: there shadows lay by night and day, and dark things silent crept beneath. The wind came down from mountains cold, and like a tide it roared and rolled. The branches groaned, the forest moaned,
and leaves were laid upon the mould. The wind went on from West to East; all movement in the forest ceased. But shrill and harsh across the marsh its whistling voices were released. The grasses hissed their tassels bent, the reeds were rattling; on it went. O'er shaken pool under the heavens cool where racing clouds were torn and rent. It passed the lonely Mountain bare and swept above the dragon's lair. There black and dark lay boulders stark and flying smoke was in the air. It left the world and took its flight over the wide seas of the night. The moon set sail upon the gale, and stars were fanned to leaping light.

Gandalf: It is time for us to sleep, but not I think for Beorn.

<<They all go to sleep...Bilbo wakes in the night>>

Bilbo: Why it’s still night! Well...What was that...! <<Growling and scraping>>
...Bears! Gandalf said Beorn turns to one! I better get back to sleep!

<<Next Morning Bofur wakes up Bilbo sleeping>>

Bofur: Wake up Baggins, or there shan’t be any left for you!

Bilbo: Any what left?

Bofur: Breakfast, which to say is mostly inside us, but what is left is out on the porch...

<<Bofur and Bilbo go there...they eat and talk>>

Bilbo: Where’s Beorn?

Bofur: ...We have been looking for Beorn ever since the sun got up; but there is no sign of him anywhere, though we found breakfast lay out as soon as we came out.

Bilbo: Where’s Gandalf?

Bofur: Oh, out and about somewhere, headed to the Misty Mountains over there...By the way come outside...When I came outside this morning for a stroll, I saw these tracks everywhere, bigger than my feet! Look at all them! It was Beorn I tell you! <<With eyes wide open>>

Bifur: <<The Dwarves laugh>>come on Bofur! What is this? All the drink has gone to your head, Beorn a bear? The most absurd idea I ever came across.

Bilbo: Just to state...<<Takes a drink>> Last night I heard bear noises and scraping noises on the door. Look here are the marks!

Bofur: See what I mean, it was Beorn.

Bifur: <<The Dwarves laugh again>> Leave Bofur and Bilbo alone until they’re sober.

<<Shows them eating dinner>>

Nori: That’s a good thing that we have Bombur with us. He is a good cook. This stew is great!

Ori: Well the problem with him is that he eats all the food.

Oin: True! Except right now it doesn’t matter if he eats because there isn’t a lack of food here. When we head off to the end of the quest the next place we’ll get food is the Long-Lake, Esgaroth, and he will be a trouble from when we leave here to when we reach Esgaroth.

Nori: You’re right. But right now he isn’t a trouble.

Ori: That’s right.

Oin: I agree.

Bombur: What are you talking about?

Thorin: Now your fates will be sealed by the agreement.

Nori: What agreement Thorin?

Thorin: The agreement that Bombur is a help when we have food to spare, but that he is a problem when we don’t have food to spare.

Ori: You know what, Thorin, I think you’re right.

Oin: And I think he’s right too.

Nori: I think it happens to be that Thorin is correct.

Thorin: Then are fates are sealed to the agreement.

Nori: What agreement?

Thorin: <<Sighs and shakes his head while saying>>Dwarves these days.

Dwalin: I agree.

Thorin: Dwalin, don’t start that again!

Dwalin: Okay, okay. Where has Gandalf been all day? He should be here for supper, always arrives for it at any rate.

Gandalf: That’s right! I do arrive for a meal or something like that.

Dwalin: Oh! Gandalf, hello!

Kili: Where’s our host?

Nori: And where’ve you been all day yourself?

Gandalf: One question at a time and none till after supper. (He eats some bread drinks something)

Bifur: Okay, come on Gandalf, Where’ve you been all day?

Gandalf: Alright! I went outside this morning and saw bear-prints all over I could say there were little bears, medium bears, regular bears, large bears, and gigantic big bears all having a regular bear dance from midnight until dawn. The bear-prints came in every direction except one in the direction of the mountains, and the clearing where we had our pleasant get-together with the Wargs the night before the night before last. None coming only one’s going away from here.

Ori: What about the other question...Where’s our host?

Gandalf: I think you can guess it with the single bear-prints heading to the mountains.

Bilbo: What should we do? I thought you said he was not a friend of theirs. Now our chance before an army of goblins, led by Beorn himself, comes to kill us.

Thorin: What! He is not gathering an army of goblins. Most likely he is investigating the burnt wolf glade.

Bofur: See what I mean those bear prints and scratches were Beorn’s.

Bifur: Oh we knew that all along.

Bofur: No! Remember what you said Bifur, “All the drink has gone to your head, Beorn a bear? The most absurd idea I ever came across.” And remember, “Leave Bofur and Bilbo alone until they’re sober.” And do you think Gandalf is drunk. If he was he certainly isn’t now. What have you got to say?

Bifur: Well...Maybe you were right, but we still don’t know for certain.

Dori: I think it’s time to sleep.

Bombur: I think we could use a little snack!

Gloin: No it’s time for bed. Good night, see you all tomorrow!

Thorin: Good night.

<<Next Morning they wake up and go get something to eat>>

Thorin: Good Morning dwarves. Today we set out again to Mirkwood Forest. That is unless Beorn comes back. Let’s eat before packing. We don’t want any dwarves or hobbits lagging behind as we walk hungry as a dwarf after a day at the mines!

Balin: Here’s Beorn preparing a breakfast.

Beorn: Come and eat my merry friends...You would like to know what I have been doing the morning of yesterday until now. I have found out the story you told is true. I caught a goblin and a warg looking for you after I saw the burnt wolf glade. They are hunting for you still. Yet I could guess there is other news. Their bodies are dead hanging on a tree outside.

Gandalf: It is time I need to tell you of our plight. You see we are coming through your lands to the Lonely Mountain to recover the dwarves’ lost treasure. As you can guess we need your help.

Beorn: Well, I can help you I will send you on your way with provisions and ponies to ride, and a horse for you Gandalf, you can set off tomorrow. I’ll give you enough provisions to last you the first half of the forest. Your journey through Mirkwood is dark, dangerous, and difficult. There are streams on this side of the forest but there is one river black and dark you should try not to touch it and definitely not drink it. There is a path up North nearer to the Mountains you can take. It may seem like you’re going back to the Goblin strongholds but that is what the goblins will least expect; and I will leave you to your strength and courage to go through the forest. With that let’s finish eating, prepare, and you can set off tomorrow morning.

Gandalf: Thank you very much.

<<Next Morning>>

Beorn: Wake up my merry lad...<<Pulling Bilbo from sleep>> Wake and hear me calling. Wake all the others your breakfast is waiting and after that your adventure.

<<Shows them eating for a few seconds then silently shows them preparing to go>>

Bifur: This is your pack Bombur.

Bombur: No! I don’t want to carry such things. Why can’t you or Bofur. You are just lazy people.

Bifur: Okay then no food for you!

Bombur: What do you mean no food?

Bifur: Well if you don’t carry this bag you get no food and the rest of us will split it. <<Chuckles>>

Bombur: <<Sighs>> Very well I’ll take it.

Beorn: Come on you two the others are waiting.

Bifur: Coming! <<They run out the front door>>

Gandalf: Farewell. We may meet again!

Beorn: Farewell. Remember do not stray off the path in Mirkwood or your deaths are imminent. Farewell! Remember to send back the ponies I am lending you when you reach the Forest.

<<Shows them going along plains...Then next day at the Eaves of
Mirkwood they all wake up from sleep 10:00>>

Gandalf: Thorin I think I can head south now, to my Council I was speaking of. You will have to go in the Forest by yourself.

Thorin: What! And leave us here all alone.

Gandalf: I took time out of my way to travel with you from Hobbiton, the
Hobbit’s House, to here and it will take me some time to get to the Council, and yet you still expect me to go through the Forest with you, around 150 miles out of my way!

Thorin: Okay, okay! I’ve got the idea. Some friend you are leaving us here at the verge of an important moment because you’re afraid of getting lost in the woods.

Gandalf: Be quiet Thorin. You know I already warned you about going to this Council but you took no heed because I didn’t leave right then.

Thorin: Sure, whatever. Leave us here if you like.

Gandalf: I might come back and see the adventure through later on. Remember I am taking the Horse and Ponies back to Beorn.

Thorin: No! You expect us to give them up. Were taken them in the Forest!

Gandalf: Hand them over now.

Fili: Thorin. You know I have the best eyesight, but what I am trying to say is that I saw a bear walking along with us on our way to the Forest.

Gandalf: It must have been Beorn in bear’s shape. He must have been walking along in some distance to keep a watch on you and on the ponies. He is a good friend, but a bad enemy, so I’d suggest that you hand them over or else he might attack...He isn’t even that far away now!

Thorin: Okay men, you heard the dratted wizard <<Imitates Gandalf>> “Hand them over.”

Gandalf: Thank you.

Fili: Look! Over there; a bear is running out of the woods, it must be Beorn!

Gandalf: His watch over you and the animals he gave us is over and is going home to await my arrival there.

<<Gandalf walks with the horses and ponies off>>

Gandalf: Goodbye! Take care of yourselves. Do not stray off the path and keep on course. Save the food and drink. I will try to meet you in Lake-Town. Farewell!

Thorin: Goodbye and good riddance!

Fili: What are we going to do now Thorin?

Thorin: <<Quite proudly>> why we will venture a little hike through the Forest, that’s all! Well, here we go, get your packs on you backs and let’s walk, miles without end most likely.

<<Shows them go in the Forest and now shows them walking along, different places, and now it shows this at a campfire being built>>

Gloin: You know, I think that a fire will be good to light. We can’t even see in this light, if it can be called light!

Oin: A fire would be good. It might even stop these creatures from staring at us. They probably haven’t seen such a bright light as a fire before.

Thorin: Go ahead. We will need guards then all night and I’m not first!

Gloin: Okay. Oin go get our tinderboxes.

Oin: Sure. I’ll be there in a minute.

<<Oin gets two tinderboxes from out of his and Gloin’s packs>>

Oin: Here you are.

Gloin: Thanks. Where is the wood?

Oin: I don’t know...Bilbo!

Bilbo: What Oin?

Oin: Gloin wants some wood for the fire, go and get some.

Bilbo: Okay. Dwalin and Balin, come here.

Dwalin: Yes.

Bilbo: Go get some wood for the fire, mind you it better be dry!

Balin: Alright.

<<We see Balin and Dwalin muttering and shaking heads>>

Dwalin: Fili, Kili! What? No put it down?

Kili: Sorry were sharpening our blades.

Dwalin: Well put it down?

<<Fili and Kili stop sharpening their blades and put them down and come
over>>

Kili: What can’t you see were doing...?

Balin: You need to get wood quick...

Dwalin: ...There is an emergency!

Fili: Okay will get it.

<<Fili and Kili are shown gathering wood. Now they come back to their
recruiters>>

Kili: Here’s your wood.

Fili: It’s quite heavy, take it, quick!

<<Fili drops his wood>>

Balin: Fool, you dropped it. Go along sharpen your blades I’ll handle this
mess.

Dwalin: Come on let’s bring it to Bilbo.

<<They pick up the wood and bring it back to Bilbo>>

Bilbo: Oh, you were going to come back, didn’t think you would.

Balin: Here’s your wood!

Bilbo: Thank you. <<Grunts>>

Dwalin: Don’t complain we were the ones that did your work for you.

Bilbo: Okay, sure, you can run along now.

<<It shows Balin and Dwalin fade into the distance. Bilbo takes the wood to Oin who is moping around the campfire which has not been started yet>>

Bilbo: Okay Oin. Take the wood you ordered. It’s been some tiring work looking for it just for you.

Oin: Alright I’ll take it from here, run along and thanks for the help. Gloin here is the wood.

Gloin: Thanks Oin! Let’s get the fire going.

<<They start it up and then bats attack them...Thorin wakes up>>

Thorin: What’s all the noise about? Bats! Scram!

<<They all run about wild>>

Thorin: What are you doing, I said put the fire out boys!

<<They all run to the fire and put it out>>

Gloin: Thorin that was not our faults.

Thorin: Then what was it?

Gloin: Well, I lit the fire and these bats came along and attacked us.

Thorin: What a joke, what a...

Oin: Thorin it’s true! I got some wood and we lit it and the bats came!

Bilbo: No! I got the wood. You told me to.

Balin: Actually Bilbo told me and Dwalin to get the wood for him and we got
it.

Dwalin: Yes! Taking all the praise for work are we Bilbo!

Kili: Sorry Balin and Dwalin. <<Chuckles>>

Fili: You told us to get the wood and we got it for you.

Bilbo: So you tried to take the praise for work too! <<Dwalin grunts>>

Thorin: What did you do with the wood then Kili?

Kili: Why I gave the wood to Balin and Dwalin. They most likely gave it to
Bilbo who gave it to Oin and Gloin. Then Oin and Gloin probably started the fire and the bats came along.

Dwalin: That’s right.

Kili: What about you Bilbo. Is this true?

Bilbo: Yes, I did give the wood to Oin. And the bats were an accident
Thorin!

Thorin: Then you all lied! I’m ashamed of you!

Gloin: Thorin, we can’t light fires anymore can we?

Thorin: No! Definitely not! Bats will swarm in again and attack our camp.

Gloin: So we will have to go without fires.

Thorin: Yes, no more fires.

Gloin: To sleep we go men.

Thorin: Yeah, good idea Gloin. Good night men!

Ori: Good night!

<<Shows them going to sleep in the darkness; now it shows them walking
along... the ones talking in the back of the group>>

Nori: Thorin, I was thinking, what is the Lonely Mountain, or what is it like
nowadays?

Thorin: Well it was splendid. I was so rich I could do anything I wanted to
do. We all were treated with great reverence especially the King my grandfather. It was altogether good days for us. I remember the incident when one of the dwarves burnt up a piece of gold in the forge. It was astonishing!

Balin: <<Coughs>> Excuse me Thorin?

Thorin: What now? Can’t you see I’m telling a story? What do you want?

Balin: Well, to tell you the truth, Nori, Thorin was the dwarf who burnt the piece of gold in the forge.

Nori: You were? Thorin!

Thorin: Well, actually it was me, but a piece of gold is no matter, we all had tons of it! <<Fake laugh>>

Balin: I’m sorry Thorin; I had to tell before you put the blame on that other dwarf like you did back then.

Nori: What do you mean?

Balin: Well Thorin here, he put the blame of burning the piece of gold in the forge, on a little dwarf of the age of ten, quite a young age for a dwarf. I even personally saw Thorin burn the gold piece!

Ori: You actually mean that Thorin burnt the piece of gold and blamed it on a ten year old dwarf!

Balin: Yeah.

Ori: Wow Thorin, you were a young rascal!

Thorin: I was, back then at any rate.

Bilbo: Thorin! <<Calls from the front of the group to the back, where Thorin is>>

Thorin: Saved by the burglar again, ha! What Bilbo?

Bilbo: Thorin, there’s a stream. Black water it has and it flows like the wind!

Thorin: Do you think it is the stream that Beorn warned us about?

Bilbo: Yes, come and look.

Thorin: Okay! Coming Bilbo!

<<Thorin goes up to the front of the line by the stream; the rest have halted>>

Thorin: What is it Bilbo?

Bilbo: I already said it is the stream Beorn warned about wading, or even
touching.

Thorin: I can’t see why we can’t wade.

Bilbo: Beorn said not to, some spell will be cast on whoever touches it.

Thorin: Well I can’t see how to get across, any suggestions?

Bilbo: Well...I will check the other bank for something!

<<He stares out across the stream and>>

Bilbo: Thorin! There’s a boat on the far bank. Maybe we could use it to cross the stream.

Thorin: How do you suppose we will be able get it to this bank. I should say it probably is twelve yards.

Bilbo: Twelve yards!

Thorin: Twelve yards is as good as a mile! We can’t jump it, and we daren’t try to wade or swim.

Bilbo: Can anyone throw a rope?

Thorin: What’s the good of that? The boat is sure to be tied up, even if we could hook it, which I doubt.

Bilbo: I don’t believe it is tied, though of course I can’t be sure in this light; but it looks to me as if it was just drawn up on the bank, which is low just there where the path runs into the water.

Thorin: We could give it a try. Dori is the strongest, but Fili is the youngest and still has the best eyesight. Come here Fili, and see if you can see the boat Mr. Baggins is talking about.

<<Fili comes and looks in the darkness>>

Fili: I think I can see it.

Thorin: Well take the rope and try to hook it.

<<Fili throws but throws it in the water...he looks afraid>>

Bilbo: Not far enough. A couple of feet and you would have dropped it on the boat.

Fili: What if I touch the wet rope?

Bilbo: Try again I don’t think that the magic of the water is strong of enough to hurt you if you touch a little of wet rope!

<<Fili throws it. It lands and hooks onto the boat>>

Fili: Got it! I’ll pull it...Oin! Gloin! Someone help it is too hard to pull.

<<They come and tug...they fall over>>

Oin: Help!

Bilbo: I got it! Help its going down stream. <<The boat pulls Bilbo down the stream>>

Thorin: Someone help the burglar!

Balin: Here! <<Balin pulls it to shore>>

Thorin: Well done men! It was tied after all! Look some rope, but ours was
stronger.

Bilbo: How will we cross?

Fili: Give me another length of rope and a hook. It will get stuck in the bushes on the other side. We can pull on it to get the boat across. When they land safely the people on this side can draw the boat back, and we can keep the boat steady from either end!

Thorin: Good, dwarves’ ideas pass all other folks ideas.

Bilbo: Who will cross first?

Thorin: I shall, and you will come with me; and Fili and Balin. That’s as many as the boat can hold at a time. After that Kili, Oin, Gloin, and Dori will go. Next Ori, Nori, Bifur, and Bofur shall go; and last Dwalin and Bombur.

Bombur: I’m always last and I don’t like it, it’s somebody else’s turn today.

Thorin: What do think I am supposed to do, hmm? Your fat, you shouldn’t be. Not to mention ugly too. Since you are fat and ugly you must be with the last and lightest boatload. Don’t start grumbling against orders or something bad will happen to you! Let’s cross!

<<They all cross as Thorin said...The last boatload is just getting to the other side>>

Dwalin: That wasn’t that bad!

<<Dwalin comes out...Bombur throws him the luggage...Bombur gets ready to come out grumbling>>

Thorin: What did I say? Shut Up!

Bombur: Help!

Bilbo: Bombur fell in! Bombur is drowning!

Dwalin: Throw a rope in, he might catch it!

<<They do...Bombur is pulled up but sleeping>>

Thorin: What bad luck! He’s sleeping! The fool, wake him.

Dwalin: We tried but he won’t wake up.

Thorin: Well I suppose we will have to come up with some ingenious plan.

Dori: I have an idea.

Thorin: What is it now, I’m trying to think!

Dori: Well, I think that four men should carry Bombur along; four others
shall hold their packs. After an hour they will switch and so forth so that
each has a turn holding Bombur.

Thorin: Of course that is a great idea. Men, did you hear my great plan,
let’s try it. Oh one more thing, let’s have a vote to see who should carry
him. Who votes me? <<Aside to Dori>> Dori, none of them will vote me.

Dori: It looks like they did! <<The rest vote Thorin to carry Bombur>> I’ll
help you though.

Thorin: Of course you will. Just as Bifur and Bofur will help too! Let’s go!

<<Shows them carting Bombur...now they go down a slope with oak trees
all round>>

Bilbo: When will the forest end?

Gloin: He’s right, Thorin when will the forest end.

Thorin: Well, I don’t know. Why don’t we have the burglar do some
climbing?

Bilbo: You want me to climb a tree?

Gloin: I get it! Thorin wants you to climb a tree so that...

Thorin: Yes, I want you to climb a tree, so as to see if the Forest ends
anytime soon...

Bilbo: ...And you need the smallest person to get up the tree.

Gloin: Because our weight will snap each branch.

Thorin: Yes of course. Bilbo has to go up so that he can look out through
the tree tops.

Bilbo: Not exactly a fun idea, but I’ll try it.

<<Bilbo climbs up a tree and gets to the top of the branches. Sunlight
comes in and butterflies are fluttering around. Screaming from below calls
Bilbo to his senses>>

Thorin: Come on down of you might fall! <<This is filmed looking down
from the tree>>

Bilbo: Alright.

<<It is common sense that he climbs down now>>

Gloin: Well?

Bilbo: I cannot see an end to the Forest.

Gloin: The Forest goes on forever and ever, whatever will we do?

Thorin: No time to moan then...Maybe we will be able to find food or drink soon guys. Let’s go.

<<Shows them walk along carrying Bombur, all sad. Now they are sitting leaning on some trees, and it is raining out>>

Nori: This is a joke Ori; Rain coming down in torrents, walking on endlessly, and carrying extra bags or him. <<He says him with disgust and points at Bombur>>

Ori: You’re right Nori! If he doesn’t wake up soon, then we should leave him here.

Dori: There is a scrap of comfort though.

Nori: What’s that?

Dori: Bombur isn’t awake to eat all the food!

Ori: The bad thing is, is that we have more food salvaged when he is sleeping, but when he wakes up we have less food, but won’t have him to carry!

Nori: Well, let’s leave him; we will last longer as long as he is asleep!

<<A cry of joy from Thorin >>

Thorin: What! This can’t be. <<Starts to cry with joy and laughs>> He’s awake.

Ori: What! He’s awake!

Dori: We are free from the burden!

Bombur: Wow, I had the most wonderful dream.

Thorin: <<Angry now>>why you dog! We don’t care about your dreams. It’s time you started to help, get on your feet and start walking. <<Nicely now>> Come on, the rest of you!

Bombur: I had a dream where there was a feast, in a forest much like this one. There were elves there and it went on forever and ever.

Thorin: Dream Feasts are of no use to us except to make our mouths water.

Bombur: I will just sit here then and sleep...

Thorin: No you don’t. Let your legs take their share, we have carried you far enough. GET UP!

Bombur: Alright, coming.

Here is more. Just a note: Comments are wanted and appreciated, but not necessary.

<<They go on and now are walking along are dragging their bags behind them and barely getting anywhere. Balin is a little ahead of everyone. >>

Balin: What was that? Guys I think I just saw a twinkle of light in the forest. Look there it is again, on the left.

Dwalin: It seems there is a fire and torches.

Bombur: It looks as if my dreams were coming true! Come on!

Thorin: Grab him...

<<Bombur tries to rush off in the direction of the fire, but Balin grabs
him>>

Thorin: ...A feast would be no good, if we never got back alive from it.

Bombur: But without a feast we shan’t remain alive much longer anyway.

Nori: I agree with Thorin.

Ori: You’re wrong, Bombur’s correct.

Dori: Bilbo isn’t Thorin right?

Bilbo: I agree with Bombur.

<<A huge quarrel occurs; it stops when Thorin says...>>

Thorin: Stop! We shall send a couple of spies.

Bilbo: Good idea.

Bombur: Let’s send Bilbo!

<<A huge quarrel occurs again; it stops when Bombur says...>>

Bombur: In my dream there was wine and ale. There was also meat and
things to eat in abundance. There was even more, more than...

Thorin: Agreed! We will all go in the forest. Let’s all creep up to the light of
the fire then we will plan the rest out.

<<They all creep out to the edge of the clearing of light>>

Thorin: Alright men, we will...

<<They all rush out into the light. Suddenly the fire and torches go out.
Now we here screaming and shouting. We can see dwarves tripping over
logs running into trees. Eventually they are all in a circle around where the
fire was burning. They each say their name>>

Thorin: Thorin. Good we’re all here.

Bilbo: No Bombur!

Thorin: What?

Bilbo: Bombur is doing it again.

Thorin: What is that?

Bilbo: Bombur was the one who ran forward first. Everyone went after him,
because they knew if he touched the food, there would not be any left. So,
now he is trying to leap off and find the scraps on the ground.

Thorin: I am a shamed of you Bombur. Those Wood-Elves feasting would
have given us food and drink if you were not a wild animal!

Balin: Thorin, we cannot get back to the road. You know how we lost sense
of direction when we tried to find each other. So we might as well wait for
morning. Let’s rest.

Thorin: Good idea. What fine plans my head invents. Go to sleep, Dori can
take the first watch tonight.

<<They all lie down where they are except Dori who stays sitting.
Eventually later in the night Dori awakes everyone with a loud
whisper...about 20 Decibels...just a joke>>

Dori: The lights are coming out again over there, and there are more than
ever of them.

<<They all jump up. They all have a one idea of begging for some food,
so they all go off in the direction of where the fire and torches are lit, some
way off in the forest. They are 6 feet away. >>

Thorin: No rushing forward this time! No one is to stir from hiding until I say. I shall send Mr. Baggins alone first to talk to them elves. They won’t be frightened of him.

Bilbo: What about me of them?

Thorin: <<Coughs>> Umm. Any way I hope they won’t do anything nasty to him.

<<They all creep further to the edge of the light. Thorin pushes Bilbo into
the light. It is no good. Out go the lights again, and complete darkness
falls>>

<<They all shout like last time, until they find each other. They say their
name. >>

Thorin: Okay. We have everyone except the Hobbit where is he?

Dori: I don’t know we were lost for some time he could be anywhere.

Nori: We could look for him again?

Thorin: Maybe.

Ori: We should look for him again.

Thorin: Everybody get up, we have to look for the annoying burglar.

<<They get up and look all over for him. They come back and say their
name. >>

Kili: Drat the Hobbit.

Fili: Confusticate him, where is he?

Thorin: Men get up, one for time we will look for him. If we can’t find him
we will wait for the morning.

<<They get up and look all over for him>>

Oin: I cannot find him anywhere.

Bofur: He is so annoying. Bifur, have you seen him?

Bifur: You mean touched him, you can’t see in this darkness. Wait a
second. Here he is! He is under this log.

Thorin: Good, bring him here to this spot. Everybody assemble as best you
can to this spot!

Bifur: He’s coming to.

Bilbo: <<Groans>> I was having such a lovely dream, all about having a
most gorgeous dinner.

Bofur: Good Heavens! He has gone like Bombur.

Bifur: Don’t tell us about dreams. Dream-dinners aren’t any good, and we
can’t share them.

Bilbo: They are the best I am likely to get in this beastly place. <<He lies
down>>

Thorin: Everyone, let’s go to sleep. It is Dwalin’s turn to watch.

<<They go to sleep. Now the night is old, and Kili is watching. He rouses
them all. >>

Kili: There’s a regular blaze of light begun not far away. Hundreds of
torches and many fires must have been lit suddenly and by magic. And
hark to the singing and the harps!

<<They all lie down listening. >>

Thorin: I propose that we go and try one more time to get food.

<<Everyone speaks in agreement. They all get up and creep to the
lights...At the edge of the lights...>>

Thorin: I will go in first this time.

<<Thorin goes into the light and everything turns to darkness. Everyone is
running all over the place. The Dwarves are now crying for help. Bilbo is
knocked over and now unconscious. Silence falls. >>

<<Bilbo is now waking up. It is morning but still dark>>

Bilbo: <<Groans>> Good Morning Everyone. <<Shows a sign of shock>>
what? Where is everyone? Well I might as well go try and find them.

<<Bilbo gets up and walks in some random direction...not toward the
road>>

<<Bilbo is walking along. A Giant Spider jumps out of nowhere>>

Bilbo: Ahh.

<<The Spider knocks him over and Bilbo is dizzy. It starts weaving Bilbo
with string. Bilbo gets out of the daze and takes out his sword. He slashes
at the spider, which jumps back. Bilbo cuts the string and stands up. The
spider comes to attack but is cut down with a stroke or two. >>

Bilbo: I will give you a name and I shall call you Sting. Let us go on into
the woods and find our friends. But we should use the Ring for safety.

<<Then Bilbo puts on the Ring and walks on into the dark woods>>

Bilbo: What is this? This is blackness for this forest, like a patch of
midnight that has never been cleared away. <<A really dark place>>

Bilbo: What more Giant Spiders, above me, and their speaking, I’ll listen a
bit.

1st Spider: It was a sharp struggle, but worth it. What nasty thick skins
they have to be sure, but I’ll wager there is good juice inside.

2nd Spider: Aye, they’ll make fine eating, when they’ve hung a bit.

3rd Spider: Don’t hang ‘em too long. They’re not as fat as they might be.
Been feeding none too well of late, I should guess.

4th Spider: Kill ‘em, I say, kill ‘em now and hang ‘em dead for a while.

1st Spider: They’re dead now I’ll warrant.

4th Spider: That they are not. I just saw one a-struggling just now. Just
coming round again, I should say, after a beautiful sleep. I’ll show you.

<<A Spider climbs up a rope and goes to bundles hanging from branches. >>

Bilbo: Oh what pain the dwarves are in; stuck in sacks hanging from a tree. I have to save them. I bet the Spider went to old Bombur.

<<We hear muffled yelp from Bombur. He kicks from the foot sticking out,
the spider. The Spider falls off the branch but catches the rope. The other
spiders laugh. >>

1st Spider: You were quite right. The meat’s alive and kicking!

4th Spider: I’ll soon put an end to that!

<<The Spider climbs up to Bombur again. Bilbo picks up a stone>>

<<Bilbo throws the stone at the spider 4. It falls off the tree dead.
Hundreds of spiders come up>>

5th Spider: What happened here?

1st Spider: This spider was killed by stones.

3rd Spider: It came in that direction.

2nd Spider: Let’s check it out. Come on.

<<Bilbo throws stones at these spiders and others who were lagging
behind...He runs off to a new place. Some feet off in another direction>>

5th Spider: There is nothing here. Liar!

3rd Spider: It came from here.

1st Spider: It’s coming from there now!

<<Bilbo throws more stones at them. Dancing among the trees, throwing
stones at the spiders, who all try to find where the stones come from, and
singing this song get the spiders angry>>

Bilbo: Old fat spider sitting in a tree, old fat spider can’t see me! Attercop,
Attercop, won’t you stop, stop your spinning and look for me? Old
Tomnoddy, all a big body, old Tomnoddy can’t spy me! Attercop, Attercop,
down you drop, you’ll never catch me up your tree!

<<Now the spiders weave webs around five trees, with Bilbo trapped inside.
Bilbo sings...>>

Bilbo: Lazy Lob and Crazy Cob are weaving webs to wind me. I am far
more sweet then other meat, but still they cannot find me. Here am I,
naughty little fly; you are fat and lazy. You cannot trap me though you try,
in your cobwebs crazy.

<<With that Bilbo slashes a web and goes off in the opposite direction of
the dwarves. The spiders run after him. Bilbo sneaks off around the
spiders, back to the dwarves. There he climbs the tree and goes along the
branch to the dwarves. No ring on now. >>

Bilbo: Fili? Are you all right?

Fili: Bilbo? Where are you? The poison from the spiders weakens me!

Bilbo: Be quiet or you'll let the spiders know we're here! Help me free the others!

<<They manage to free Kili, Bifur, Dori, Nori, Bofur, and have begun on Bombur. >>

Bilbo: Hurry! Free the rest! The spiders are coming!

<<They free the rest. While the last two are coming out the spiders arrive on the scene. >>

5th Spider: Now we see you...

3rd Spider: ...You nasty little creature!

2nd Spider: We will eat you and leave your skin and bones hanging on a tree!

1st Spider: He has a stinger in his hand, but we’ll get him all the same, and then we’ll hang him head downwards for a day or two! Get the meat!

<<After this Bilbo jumps down and kills a few of the spiders. >>

Bilbo: Come down! Don’t stay up there and get caught.

<<The spiders go mad and run all over the place, trying to hurt the
dwarves and Bilbo as best as they can. Bilbo leads them to a rock wall, where they are surrounded. >>

Bilbo: Dwarves! I have a plan. I’ll disappear and then I’ll lead them off. You charge and head on that direction, I’ll follow as I may.

<<Bilbo slips the ring on and all but the spiders are stunned with shock. Bilbo goes off to the right shouting Lazy Lob and Attercop, while the dwarves throw a shower of stones at the spiders on the left. They charge and run to the left trying to escape. The spiders go after them the other half after Bilbo. All of a sudden Bilbo’s shouting stops. >>

Balin: Hopefully Bilbo is not killed, but we must run as best we can, all we can do is hope he is alright!

<<Bilbo appears suddenly on their right and charges at the spiders. The dwarves wobble off and Bilbo fights the spiders. Eventually they just leave and are defeated. Bilbo rejoins the Dwarves. >>

Bilbo: Oh there you are.

Balin: How did you disappear?

Bilbo: You see, this ring I have, let’s me do this.

Balin: Well, where did you find it?

Bilbo: I found it in Gollum’s Cave.

Balin: What? Tell the story.

Bilbo: You know what happened, just before I made it to Gollum, I found
this ring, and then the rest of the story is as you know. Gollum after the contest came at me and I ran. Then I tripped and put on the ring. I escaped thus, Gollum and the guards, through the power in this ring.

Balin: So that is how you did it! Well, Good night.

<<They all lay down to go to sleep. Silence follows for a minute or 2,
then...>>

Dwalin: Where’s Thorin?

Gloin: Yeah, where is he?

Oin: The last time I saw him was last night when we were caught, after he stepped into the lights the elves were in.

Dwalin: Well, we’ll look in the morning...

<<Each one drops off into an uncomfortable sleep. Next Morning they awake. It will film when they start to talk, daylight, barely streaks in...>>

Kili: So, what shall we do?

Fili: Yeah, Balin and Bilbo, you seem to be our expert trail hunters.

Dori: Well, any proposals?

Bilbo: I think we should go this way...straight ahead. It will lead us to the
road.

<<Behind them is the spiders. The road is right. Ahead are the elves. Left are some cliffs. >>

Balin: You may think that, but I think correctly.

Bilbo: You think we should go straight too?

Balin: No! As I said, I think correctly, we should go to the right. We will reach the road that way.

Nori: What way are we to take. Right is my vote.

Ori: I say right too.

Dori: I say straight!

Bilbo: Wait! Three say right, 2 for straight. Kili and Fili, what have you to
say?

Kili: I say straight.

Fili: And I.

Balin: Now three are for right and four straight.

Dwalin: I say right.

Gloin: I say straight.

Oin: Straight for me!

Bilbo: Ha Balin! Four are going for right, but six say straight.

Bifur: Straight!

Bombur: Right.

Bofur: Straight!

Balin: Well you win eight for straight and five for right. Even though you
won, I will get to lead, but our pace will be slow since the poison of the
spiders still troubles us.

Bilbo: Alright. I’ll just be the rear guard.

<<Balin in the lead takes them for a minute or two. Wood-elves appear
suddenly with bows and arrows ready to be shot at the unsuspecting
dwarves. >>

Elf 1: Who are you?

<<We see Bilbo put the ring on. >>

Balin: We are dwarves travelling through the Forest.

Elf 2: My friend, do not question the bearded one, but rather lead them to
our king, fair beyond the beauty of mortals.

Elf 3: Yes let our king question them, it is his forest after all.

Elf 1: Come with us or we will shoot!

Balin: I agree to follow.

Elf 1: Tie them.

<<The two other elves tie the dwarves with rope in a long line. >>

Elf 1: Let us go!

<< Elf 1 leads, Elf 2 stays in the middle next to the line, Elf 3 is in the
back, all three elves have torches lit and all three have bows and arrows.
Bilbo is in the way back, some 30 feet behind them. >>

<< They cross a wooden bridge. The climb a slight hill and at the top a
gate opens for them. >>

Elf Guard: Hello. You have the prisoners!

Elf 1: Yes.

Elf Guard: Good, bring them to the King.

Elf 1: Alright, I’ll see you later.

<< They cross a narrow hall and open into a large room. Thranduil is here
on a throne. About four guards are here. Thranduil holds a staff of
authority. >>

Thranduil: Unbind these prisoners, for they are weary and tired. Besides
they need no ropes in here. There is no escape from my magic doors for
those that are once brought inside; but take away their weapons and put
them somewhere safe.

Elf 1: My lord, these are the dwarves that attacked our men three times in
the woods last eve, while they were feasting in the forest.

Thranduil: Who is the leader here?

Balin: I am.

Thranduil: Why did you attack my people in the Forest?

Balin: We did not attack; we came to beg, because we were starving.

Thranduil: Why were you in the Forest anyway...Well?

Balin: What have we done, O king? Is it a crime to be lost in the forest, to
be hungry and thirsty, to be trapped by spiders? Are the spiders your tame
beasts, if killing them makes you angry?

Thranduil: It is a crime to wander in my realm without leave. Do you forget
that you were in my kingdom, using the road that my people made? Did
you not three times pursue and trouble my people in the forest, and rouse
the spiders with your riot and clamour? After all the disturbance you have
made, I have a right to know what brings you here, and if you will not tell
me now, I will keep you in prison until you have learned sense and
manners! Guards, take them to prison, each in his own cell. Give them
food and drink, but don’t let them past their prison doors until one of
them will tell me all I want to know.

Elf 1: Yes my Lord.

<< We now see the dwarves put in separate cells and get food and water.
We see some clips of Bilbo sad and lonely, and some dwarves in their cells
bored out of their minds. Bilbo we see walking along by the prison where
the dwarves are kept locked up. >>

Elf Guard 1: Hopefully one of these dwarves will explain to our king why
there are here in the Forest.

Elf Guard 2: Yes, I am bored of guarding all day. I wish we could resume
our former duty of cooking.

Elf Guard 1: The one dwarf in the deep cellar, who came here before the
others, might since he is lonely.

Captain of the Guard: They won’t give in unless you are nice to them.

Elf Guard 1: They won’t even if you’re nice, but the only reason I’ll be nice
is because you’re the Captain of the Guard.

Captain of the Guard: Well, I’ll check up on you later, I have something to
do. I’ll see you at the feast tonight.

<< He walks off and Bilbo sneaks in the prison. >>

Bilbo: Another dwarf? That must be Thorin! I must find him.

<< He walks along until he reaches a deep dark passage. He enters and
goes on past a 2 guards and comes to a prison in which is Thorin. >>

Bilbo: Thorin, are you in there?

Thorin: Bilbo, is that you?

Bilbo: Yes how did you get here?

Thorin: When I stepped in the lights in the forest I fell asleep, like you.
Then the elves brought me here.

Bilbo: We were attacked by spiders, I rescued them with this magic ring,
which makes you invisible. There was a great battle and we won. The next
day we tried to find the road but we were caught by the elves and brought
here. What shall we do? Answer their questions?

Thorin: No! Go tell the rest of the dwarves this: That none shall tell the
King anything unless I give the word, and how I got here and where I am.
And I will not tell the King unless you, Mr. Invisible Baggins, have failed to
think of something very clever of a way of escape.

Bilbo: I’ll go tell them all, then I’ll try to find an exit.

<< Now we see Bilbo walking near a table full of food. Bilbo snatches some
food and runs off with a bottle of wine with no one looking. Bilbo is now in
a dark hall eating and drinking. >>

Bilbo: This is annoying. I’m like a burglar that can’t get away but must go
on miserably burgling the same house day after day. This is the dreariest
and dullest part of all this wretched, tiresome, uncomfortable adventure! I
wish I was back in my hobbit-hole by my own warm fireside with the lamp
shining. At least I’m not hungry or thirsty...

<< He gets up and walks on. >>

Bilbo: ...I know every nook and cranny of this place, took me two weeks to
do. How can I find a way of escape? There is no way out. What? I hear
running water at the end of the tunnel. I might as well check it out.

<< He enters a passage and walks through it until he enters a room. This
room has barrels all over and a trap door, under it is running water. Galion
the Butler and the Chief of the Guards are in this room. Bilbo hurriedly
puts the ring on. He hides behind a large barrel while the other two talk
close by. >>

Captain of the Guard: Galion there’s a feast tonight, but these barrels are
almost empty.

Galion the Butler: You’re right. Some elves will come down soon and throw
them in the river, through these trapdoors here. They’ll float down the river
to Lake-Town.

Captain of the Guard: There’s a feast tonight, so I’ll be heading up there
soon.

Galion the Butler: Now why don’t you come with me, and taste the new wine
that has just come in. I shall be hard at work tonight clearing the cellars of
the empty barrels, so let us have a drink first to help the labour.

Captain of the Guard: Very good idea. I’ll taste with you and see if it’s fit
for the King’s table. As you know there’s a feast tonight and it would not
do to send up poor stuff!

<< They walk out of the room and into a room on their left. >>

Galion the Butler: If we did send some poor stuff up, we’d both be in for
some trouble...we can have a drink in this room.

Captain of the Guard: Where does the wine come from?

Galion the Butler: Ah, it comes from the great gardens of Dorwinion.

Captain of the Guard: I’ve never tried it.

Galion the Butler: Neither have I!

<< Galion takes out 2 flagons. He puts wine in each. They drink up. >>

Captain of the Guard: You know why I like feasts in the upper halls?

Galion the Butler: Why?

Captain of the Guard: Because I get a break off of duty!

Galion the Butler: I never get that...Oh my cup is drained, any more my
friend?

Captain of the Guard: Yes please! It has a very good taste.

<< Galion fills both up. The Captain is drowsy and then falls asleep with
his cup half drained. The Butler mutters on to himself, drains his cup, and
falls asleep. Bilbo who was in the room the whole time speaks. >>

Bilbo: Now is my chance.

<< Bilbo takes the key ring off the captain’s belt. He runs out of the room.
We now see him in the prison handling the keys...He’s at Balin’s
cell...Unlocks it...and... >>

Bilbo: Balin, if your there, you might as well come out.

<< As he comes out he says. Quit loudly too, I must add... >>

Balin: What’s this, Freedom?

Bilbo: It’s not freedom because we haven’t escaped, but it is part of the
plan.

Balin: Part of the plan, huh. Well what is the plan?

Bilbo: Be quiet! We have to free the others. We all must escape or none.
There’s a good fellow <<Pats Balin on the back. >> don’t argue, just follow
me.

<< Now Bilbo is unlocking Thorin’s cell. The rest are behind him chatting.
>>

Thorin: Whose there?

Bilbo: Thorin, come out to escape these halls!

Thorin: Upon my word! Gandalf spoke true, as usual. A pretty fine burglar
you make, it seems, when the time comes. I am sure we are all forever at
your service, whatever happens after this. But, what comes next?

Bilbo: Drat all this noise; be quiet back there!

Nori: What did we do?

Ori: Yeah, all we did was...

Thorin: Shut up! Bilbo is about to tell us the plan!

Dori: I say what is it?

Thorin: That’s what he’s going to tell us!

Bilbo: Umm...Well the plan is

Dori: Get on with it!

Bilbo: Shh! The plan of escape is this: Down this hall to the right is a room
with barrels. The elves send these to Lake-Town. We will put you in these
and then the elves will make our escape for us!

<< The dwarves all start to grumble and moan. >>

Dori: We shall be bruised and battered to pieces, and drowned too for
certain!

Nori: We thought you had some sensible notion, when you managed to
get hold of the keys!

Ori: This is a mad idea!

<< Bilbo downcast and annoyed, says. >>

Bilbo: Very well! Come along back to your nice cells, and I will lock you all
in again, and you can sit there comfortably and think of a better plan. But
I don’t suppose I shall ever manage to get hold of the keys again, even if
I feel inclined to try.

<< The dwarves look at each other. >>

Thorin: No, that’s alright. We’ll use your plan.

Bilbo: Alright then, follow me; quietly!

<< They all go leave. Now they are passing the room with the sleeping
butler and Capt. of the guard >>

Bilbo: Balin come with me. You others go straight into that room. Find
some barrels to go in.

<< Balin and Bilbo go into the room. The others go into the barrel room.
Bilbo puts the keys back on the key chain, on the Captain of the Guard’s
belt. >>

Bilbo: That will save him some of the trouble he is in for. He wasn’t a bad
fellow, and quite decent to you prisoners. It will puzzle them all too. They
will think we had a very strong magic to pass through all those locked
doors and disappear. Disappear! We have got to get busy very quick, if that is to happen. << Bilbo pats Bilbo on the back. After finishing his line he goes off leaving Balin to guard the sleepers>>Stay here and guard them. Alert me if they awake!

<< Bilbo enters the Barrel Room. The dwarves are scattered looking in barrels to fit inside of. >>

Bilbo: Try to get in the barrels used for food and other such things. The
wine barrels are noisy and small.

<< Bilbo helps Fili and Kili in. Now he is putting Thorin’s top on. >>

Thorin: There’s not much room in here!

Bilbo: If I did not put the hay in there to lessen space, you would complain
of being thrown all over!

Thorin: Bilbo is there...

< Bilbo puts the top on Thorin’s barrel. >>

Bilbo: Now for Balin.

<< Bilbo walks to Balin; who is guarding the 2 elves sleeping. >>

Bilbo: Balin!

Balin: What Bilbo?

Bilbo: Any sign of waking?

Balin: No, are the others packed?

Bilbo: Yeah, your turn.

<< Balin is getting in his barrel. >>

Balin: These air-holes are too small; I won’t be able to breathe.

Bilbo: Bofur’s were smaller and he did not complain.

Balin: I’m stifling!

Bilbo: You’re not in yet! << Bilbo puts Balin’s top on the barrel. >> Now
you are.

<< Bilbo puts on the ring. He goes in the hall and sees some elves coming
down with torches. >>

Elf 1: Where’s old Galion the Butler? I haven’t seen him at the tables
tonight. He ought to be here now to show us what is to be done.

Elf 2: I shall be angry if the old slowcoach is late. I have no wish to waste
time down here while the song is up!

Elf 3: Ha, ha! Here’s the old villain with his head on a jug!

<< The others come up. >>

Elf 3: He’s been having a little feast to him-self and his friend the captain.

Elf 1: Shake him!

Elf 2: Wake him!

<< They wake up Galion the Butler, who is not pleased at shacked or
wakened. They laugh at him. >>

Galion the Butler: You’re all late. Here am I waiting and waiting down here,
while you fellows drink and make merry and forget your tasks. Small
wonder if I fall asleep from weariness.

Elf 3: Small wonder, when the explanation stands close at hand in a jug.

<< The elves all take a drink from the “new wine” and are now quite
merry. >>

Galion the Butler: Get moving the job needs to be finished!

<< They go into the barrel room. >>

Galion the Butler: Push the barrels through the trap door.

<< The elves push a barrel or two down. >>

Elf 1: This one is full!

Elf 2: And this one!

Galion the Butler: Just push them through, I’ve already checked them and
they’re empty. You’re just drunk. Well go on toss them in!

Elf 3: Alright. On your head be it, if all the King’s full butter tubs and his
best wine is pushed into the river for the Lake-men to feast on for nothing!

Galion the Butler: Just do as I say!

Elf 1: Very well.

<< The elves push the rest through the opened trap door. >>

Bilbo: Good work, and good plan. Wait as second, how will I get through!

<< Bilbo has a face of horror. >>

Bilbo: I can’t get left behind and stay as a permanent burglar in these elf
halls. Well I guess getting on a barrel is option A)...Darn no barrels left,
well I’ll opt for plan B, water. Here goes.

Perhaps people are waiting for the complete work, to comment as a whole?

I, for one, admire your perseverance; I scripted one chapter of LOTR and that was hard work. I'd never think about attempting a whole book.

Next Part...

<< Bilbo jumps through the trap door. He looks up with a sigh. Then the elves shut the trap door and complete darkness falls. Now we see Bilbo, on a barrel, coming out of an opening in a cliff. There are lots of other barrels He is now floating along and on the left is a small village of elves. He puts the ring on. Now some elves on a raft pull all the barrels to shore. Bilbo slips off the barrel and into the water, swims to shore. >>

Raft-Elf 1: Come on, let’s get these barrels up, we have a long road
tomorrow.

Raft-Elf 2: Alright.

<< Bilbo gets on land soaked. The barrels are all on shore. >>

Raft-Elf 3: Well Good night!

Raft-Elf 1: Let’s dry by the campfire, it’s a long walk back to the houses.
It’ll be cold out. And a drink won’t do much damage!

Raft-Elf 3: You’re right, let’s go to the campfire.

<< Bilbo follows them to a campfire. >>

Raft-Elf 1: A drink anyone?

Raft-Elf 2: Yes please!

Raft-Elf 3: Thank you!

Raft-Elf 1: Its hard work here, when the barrels don’t come it’s not that
bad.

Raft-Elf 2: I wonder what the King’s halls are like.

Raft-Elf 3: Probably warm, they feast quite often.

Raft-Elf 2: We can go for them you know.

Raft-Elf 3: Too long a trip.

Raft-Elf 1: Too hard to travel upstream.

<< Bilbo warming himself by the fire sneezes loudly. >>

Raft-Elf 3: What was that?

Raft-Elf 2: That was you.

Raft-Elf 1: Actually it was you.

Raft-Elf 3: Whatever, who cares. I’ll be off home! Good Night!

Raft-Elf 1: Good Night!

<< Bilbo sneezes loudly again. >>

Raft-Elf 2: Good night and try to keep you’re sneezing down.

Raft-Elf 1: I’ll be off too. We’re leaving early tomorrow.

<< Elf 3 is here alone with unseen Bilbo. Bilbo sneezes loudly again. >>

Raft-Elf 3: What? This place is haunted. I’ll be going too!

<< Elf 3 goes. Bilbo takes a drink and snack...Bread. >>

Bilbo: This will keep my hunger down. And this will help wash everything
down. Well time for bed, the elves did say they were leaving early.

<< Bilbo goes to sleep after the drink and snack. The next morning he
wakes up and sneezes quietly now. There is a clamour by the shore. >>

Bilbo: Oh no, they’re about to leave without me!

<< Bilbo gets up and runs with the bread in his hand. He puts it in his
pocket. >>

Raft-Elf 1: Get those last barrels!

Raft-Elf 2: Alright!

<<Bilbo runs to shore and gets on the raft. Elf 2 and 3 get the last barrels
in the water. >>

Raft-Elf 3: Ready to take off.

Raft-Elf 1: Get on the raft. Shove off! Tiring work this is.

<<They push off. Some barrels are on the raft, others are in the water.
Now they are in the current. >>

Raft-Elf 2: Do you know why some of those barrels were so heavy?

Raft-Elf 1: No; unless the King is sending something to Lake-Town for
them to feast on.

Raft-Elf 3: We could have a bit if there is.

Raft-Elf 1: No, they’re likely to find out.

Raft-Elf 3: Well let’s just rest and the current will take us down. The
marshes are far off.

Raft-Elf 2: You’re right.

<<Some cam views of them floating along...Now they are near a three way
river crossing. Elf 1 and 2 are sleeping. It is dusk, the light is still there
and the sun is red. >>

Raft-Elf 3: Wake up the Captain we need some help.

Raft-Elf 2: What is it?

Raft-Elf 3: The current is pulling us into the marshes!

Raft-Elf 2: What! Wake the Captain!

<<They wake up Elf 1>>

Raft-Elf 1: What now, see I’ can’t you see I’m sleeping?

Raft-Elf 2: the current is pulling us the wrong way, not to Lake-Town but
into the marshes!

Raft-Elf 1: Well, get the poles and oars. Row to the right!

<<They start paddling right. >>

Raft-Elf 2: The current is too strong.

Raft-Elf 1: And I don’t know the lands in the marshes.

Raft-Elf 3: What’ll we do?

<<Bilbo with the ring on gets in the water and helps push the boat to the
right >>

Raft-Elf 1: Wait. We’re going right!

<<Bilbo is now pushing the barrels to the right. >>

Raft-Elf 2: What of the barrels?

Raft-Elf 3: Look! They’re coming with us!

Raft-Elf 1: We have some luck. We just suddenly go right and all the
barrels too!

Raft-Elf 2: Let’s stay awake now. Lake-Town is about a few miles away;
and since the current is going left we have to paddle, which will take some
time.

Raft-Elf 3: You’re right.

<<Bilbo gets back on the boat and sighs. We see a view of the setting
sun, now a view of a dark sky. The elves are rowing. In front is Lake-Town.
A guard is on the dock. >>

Raft-Elf 1: At last Lake-Town is here! We’ll have to rest here tonight.

Raft-Elf 2: At least there are some men on the shore who will help us with
the barrels.

Raft-Elf 3: Let’s just paddle.

<<Bilbo looks with awe. They approach the dock. >>

Man 1: Who goes there?

Raft-Elf 1: It is the elves of the Wood. We bring the barrels.

Man 1: Well, just put the barrels in the water there, and come inside the
Town Hall, by the Marketplace, for a feast. We’ll get the barrels in the
morning.

Raft-Elf 1: Alright. Come on men.

<<The men go off while the elves put the barrels in the water next around
the dock, no moving water is here. The elves go off to the feast. Bilbo
takes off the ring. He gets on shore and goes in the water. He opens the
lid on Thorin’s barrel. >>

Thorin: Oh. At last, freedom from all that. Why you’re the culprit!

Bilbo: What?

Thorin: You’re the one that made this. I’m all black and blue, I’m soaked,
and I have hay all over me. Not first-class, but negative googaplex class.

Bilbo: I beg your pardon?

Thorin: The ride was horrible.

<<This whole time Thorin has been laying on the dock, Bilbo stands over
him. >>

Bilbo: Are you still in prison, or are you free. Are you guarded all day, or
do you have freedom. Help me get the rest of the dwarves out. After we
do, they have a feast in Lake-Town.

Thorin: Your right, I’ll help you.

<<Thorin and Bilbo go in the water and start looking in barrels, there is a
new scene. Bilbo and Thorin have found in barrels: Fili, Kili, Dwalin, Balin,
Bofur, and Bifur, who are lying on the dock. Thorin and Bilbo are still
searching. >>

Bilbo: I can’t find the others.

Thorin: Neither can I. We need help.

Bilbo: Will anyone help us find the others.

Kili: I’ll help.

Fili: And I.

Bilbo: Thanks.

Kili: It’s nothing. Both of us were quite dry and not knocked around in the
barrels.

<<They find the rest of the dwarves. Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, and Gloin are
waterlogged and need help getting to the dock. They then find Bombur
who is sleeping. They carry him to the dock and wake him up. They do not
like the sight of him sleeping. >>

Thorin: Get up Bombur! We’re here!

Bombur: Where are we?

Bilbo: Lake-Town.

Thorin: Well, here we are! And I suppose we ought to thank Mr. Baggins. I
am sure he has a right to expect it, though I wish he could have arranged
a more comfortable journey. We still are all very much at your service once
more, Mr. Baggins. No doubt we shall feel properly grateful, when we are fed and recovered.

Fili: In the meanwhile what’s next?

Bilbo: I’d suggest the Town Hall, there’s a feast there.

Bombur: I’m not getting up.

Thorin: Good idea. I’ll go; Bilbo, Fili, and Kili will join me.

Bilbo: Just walk up this way. There’s a guard-house though at the top. So
we’ll talk to them, they’ll lead us to the Town Hall.

<<The four scouts go up to the guard-house. In there, are three drunk
guards. >>

Man 1: I know, isn’t it?

Man 2: The job is so easy; no enemies dare come in sight of our
impregnable fortress.

Man 3: You’re drunk, my friend, and so am I!

<<They laugh; the four scouts walk in. The guards stand up in terror.
They’re drunk remember...>>

Man 1: Who are you?

Man 2: Yeah! And what do you want!

Thorin: I am Thorin son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King under the Mountain!
I have come back. I wish to see the Master of your town.

<<Excepting the wet hay on him and all the bruises, Thorin looks like a
King. The 2nd Men rushes out and stares at the water. He stares out
across the Lake as if looking for something important. >>

Thorin: What’s wrong?

Man 1: The prophecy, he believes in it!

Bilbo: Prophecy, what prophecy?

Man 1: That when the King under the Mountain returns, the Running River
and the Long Lake shall turn golden. He’s looking for gold. By the way,
King under the Mountain, who are your companions?

Thorin: These two here, are the sons of my father’s daughter. Fili and Kili
of the race of Durin; this is Mr. Baggins who has travelled with us out of the
West.

Man 1: Well then, if you come in peace, lay down your arms!

Thorin: We have none. We have no need of weapons, who return at last to
our own as spoken of old. Nor could we fight against so many. Take us to
your master!

Man 1: He is at feast.

Kili: Then all the more reason for taking us to him.

Fili: Yeah. We are worn and famished from our long road and we have sick
comrades. Now make haste and let us have no more words or your master
may have something to say to you.

Man 1: Follow me then.

Thorin: At last we move.

<<The four scouts and a guard go to the Town Hall. They go up some
steps. Thorin pushes his way to the doors and opens them wide. He
screams out these words... >>

Thorin: I am Thorin, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King under the Mountain!
I return!

<<All leap to their feet. The raft-elves rise in great surprise and go to the
master’s table. >>

Raft-Elf 1: Master of Lake-Town, these are prisoners of our King that have
escaped.

Raft-Elf 2: Wandering vagabond dwarves that could not give any good
account of themselves.

Raft-Elf 3: Sneaking through the woods and molesting our people!

Master of Lake-Town: Is this true?

Thorin: It is true that we were wrongfully waylaid by the Elven-King and
imprisoned without cause as we journeyed back to our own land. But
neither lock nor bar may hinder the homecoming spoken of old of the King
beneath the Mountain. Nor is this town in the Wood-Elves realm. I speak
to the Master of the town of the Men of the Lake, not to the raft-men of
the king.

<<The Master talks to the elves privately and quietly >>

Master of Lake-Town: You see the Elven-King is very powerful. I don’t want
to become enemies. I’ll see what I can do.

<<This whole time people had rushed out into the streets and have been
telling the people that the King under the Mountain has returned. The
Master goes towards the 4 scouts. >>

Master of Lake-Town: Well, King under the Mountain, I’ll give you a house
you and you companions can stay in.

Thorin: I have ten more by the docks.

Master of Lake-Town: <<In shock>>Well, come outside!

<<They go outside and all the folk of the town, out of windows and on the
steps, all over sing. Harps or fiddles can be played within the crowd. >>

People of lake-Town: The King beneath the Mountain, the King of carven
stone. The Lord of silver fountains, shall come unto his own. His crown shall be upholden, his harp shall be restrung, his halls shall echo golden, to songs of yore re-sung. The woods shall wave on mountains, and grass beneath the sun. His wealth shall flow in fountains, and the rivers golden run. The stream shall run in gladness, the lakes shall shine and burn. All sorrow fail and sadness, at the Mountain-King’s return!

Master of Lake-Town: People of Lake-Town, go to the docks and get the
other dwarves. Bring them into the great hall for the feast. Then afterwards
give them a house and pamper them. Make sure our guests are safe.

<<The 4 scouts and the Master go inside. The raft-elves are afraid. The
master gives his great chair to Thorin. The rest of the dwarves come in,
and sit at the great table. They start eating. Now they are done. Thorin
acts as if the mission is accomplished>>

Thorin: Let us go to the house given to us, and then meet the people
tomorrow.

<<Thorin goes outside with the others. Lake-Town cheers. Then they sing
the song again while the dwarves and Bilbo go into a house given to them.
The door slams on the camera, end scene. Now the dwarves go out to the
people. Bilbo is sitting at the front door. >>

Bard: Hello Bilbo, you seem quite lonely.

Bilbo: Yes I am.

Bard: Would you like me to give you a tour.

Bilbo: That would be nice.

Bard: Follow me.

<<Bard and Bilbo go off. Now we see Bard and Bilbo in the market. >>

Bard: This is the market. You may well understand that this is where we
sell and buy food, drink, and the like.

Bilbo: Good thing Bombur’s not here.

Bard: Why?

Bilbo: He eats everything on sight.

Bard: Oh.

Bilbo: Here he comes, look.

<<Bombur comes running in the market. Drooling he screams... Everyone
stares at him. >>

Bombur: Food!

<<Bombur jumps on the counter throws a few pieces of gold down on the
stall and grabs a full steak. He then sits on the ground and stares at his
food. In a bite or two, meat is sticking in his mouth and getting all over
himself and the floor. He is about to take the last bite, three bites for an
average man. Everyone stares at him in disgust. >>

Thorin: You filthy pig! Clumsy, slime ball! What are you doing? Making a
fool of yourself. No more for you. You just ate lunch, but still dare come
here and take away the meats from the citizens of this town, for yourself
to feast on!

Bombur: But Thorin! <<He says this with food in his mouth>>

Thorin: You, you, Ahh! Get back to the house!

<<Thorin and Bombur go back to the house they live in >>

Bilbo: I feel sick, and I don’t feel up to the tour.

Bard: I understand. I’m going home too.

<<They go their respectful ways. Bilbo is now with the dwarves, at night.
They are talking... >>

Thorin: I say, a fine plan, but will it work?

Bombur: We’ll need lots of food when we go towards the Mountain.

Balin: Bombur’s right...

Dwalin: ...For once.

Kili: But the food should not be in Bombur’s position...

Fili: ...Or else there won’t be any left.

Thorin: Yes. We must get the Master and people to lend us everything we
need, while this great enthusiasm lasts about us, and not wait for
everything to cool down with delay.
Bilbo: I agree, but I say to bed.

Thorin: You’re right. Good night!

<<The scene ends. Next scene has the Raft-Elves quietly talking to each
other. They are walking to the King to speak to him. They are nervous.
The Capt. of the Guard is there too. >>

Raft-Elf 1: My Lord King.

Thranduil: What brings the Rafts Men of the King up to these Great Halls?

Raft-Elf 2: Lord, the prisoners the elves found in the Wood have escaped.

Thranduil: I know.

Raft-Elf 3: We knew because in Lake-Town, during a feast, the prisoners
came in and were honoured by the people who live in Lake-Town. The
Master went along with the whole thing because he knew they lied when
they said they were returning to reclaim the Lonely Mountain.

Thranduil: It might be true, since they would not tell us of their journey.
They probably wished not to share their treasure with us. You may leave
back to your dwellings in the East. Farewell...

Captain of the Guard: I wonder what they will do, these dwarves when they
go to the Mountain.

Thranduil: We’ll see. No treasure will come back through Mirkwood without
my having something to say in the matter. But I expect they will all come
to a bad end, and will serve them right!

Captain of the Guard: I can see at any rate that you do not believe in dwarves fighting and killing dragons like Smaug, and I agree.

Thranduil: I strongly suspect an attempt of burglary or something like it. Have some spies sent about the shores of the lake and as far northward towards the Mountain as they would go, and wait.

Captain of the Guard: Yes my Lord.

Sorry for not responding recently...I would like comments...Anyhow...

<<The scene ends. Next scene starts with Thorin who goes to the Master and his councillors...>>

Thorin: Master of Lake-Town, I come to you and ask you if it is possible
that we leave Lake-Town, by tomorrow, and travel up the Running River
unto the Mountain so as to complete our journey?

Master of Lake-Town: Thorin, it is very possible. You must claim your own.
The hour is at hand, spoken of old. What I can offer shall be yours, and
we trust to your gratitude when your kingdom is regained. I will have the
men prepare boats, and give you food and provisions so as to last you
some time. I will see you tomorrow when you take leave of us.

Thorin: Thank you! Let us go men.

<<Thorin leaves. >>

Master of Lake-Town: I never thought that he would ever venture out to
the Mountain, but would turn out to be frauds. It is lunch-time; I will see
you all later.

<< The scene ends. Next day, Thorin and Co. are by the docks. There are
a few men there too. The Master comes down to the docks. The people of
Lake-Town are watching them leave. >>

Thorin: Good Evening!

Master of Lake-Town: Hello Thorin, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King under
the Mountain!

Thorin: We depart in a few minutes. All the baggage and supplies, you
generously gave us, are loaded. I must thank you for all the comforts you
gave us, and sadly take leave of your nice town.

Master of Lake-Town: The two ponies, as you should know, are being
brought around the shores to where you will camp. We leave them with
you, and hope they are cared for well. It will be less busy with you gone,
farewell and have a good journey.

<<The Master leaves. >>

Thorin: We leave. Farewell people of Lake-Town. Get in the boats.

<<The people cheer and wave in farewell while Thorin and Co. get in the
boats and the men paddle off. We have some clips of them paddling
along, sun is gone, and night is coming on, in the fog. Now they are on
shore by a fire. >>

Thorin: The fire goes well, and the fog is a nice defense against the
dragon, who won’t see us.

Gloin: It actually is not. The smoke is overtaking the fire.

Oin: And when the smoke is abundant, and the fire low, it goes out.

Thorin: Well, I don’t think so, but suit yourself and do it the way you want
to, no work on my part. Where are you going, are not you going to stay
here with us for the night my good men?

Man 1: Thorin, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King under the Mountain, we
will not stay under the shadow of the Mountain.

Thorin: We’re not under the shadow of the mountain, just on the shore
near it.

Man 1: The Men of the Lake will not dare even set foot here for very
long…We will go even though we thank you for your offer. Not until the
songs have come true will we come here again. Good luck!

<<The men get in the boats and paddle away to Lake-Town. Thorin stares
at them. >>

Thorin: What weaklings. Such cowards’ human men are. Despicable they
behaved. Not stay under the mountain’s shadow. Ahh! Well let’s rest we
have a long journey tomorrow.

<<The scene ends with Thorin shaking his head and turning towards the
fire. Next scene is daylight. The dwarves are climbing steep hills. Some
clips of them walking along, first the scenery is nice, eventually is black
and smoky and burnt. The ponies have the baggage in the back with Bilbo
and Balin. >>

Bilbo: What is that? <<He points to the ruins of Dale, far off. >>

Balin: There lies all that is left of Dale. The Mountain’s sides were green
with woods and all the sheltered valley rich and pleasant in the days when
the bells rang in that town. I remember what happened on that day when
the Dragon came; I was even one of Thorin’s companions. <<Balin says
this with sadness. He has a tear in his eye. >> Let us move on.

<<Now they are some distance from the Front Gate. Out of it came a
steam and black smoke. >>

Balin: This is the Front Gate. I do not know why Thorin sent us here. There
is nothing to see. And I don’t like those dark birds; they look like spies of
evil.

Bilbo: And it smells like Dragon. The Dragon must be alive and in the halls
under the Mountain then, or I imagine so from the smoke.

Balin: That does not prove it, though I don’t doubt your right. But he might
be gone away sometime, or he might be lying out on the mountain-side
keeping watch, and still I expect smokes and steams would come out of
the gates; all the halls within must be filled with his foul reek. Let us return
to the others.

<<Back with the others. >>

Thorin: Well what did you see?

Balin: Nothing important.

Bilbo: Thorin, didn’t the map say the secret entrance was to the West of
the Front Gate?

Thorin: Yes it did.

Bilbo: Then we should go to the Western slopes of the Mountain.

Thorin: You are right. Let us march there and make camp in the valley
there.

<<The Scene ends. They are just coming to the lower camp when Thorin
shouts… >>

Thorin: Here is a good place to camp.

<<…They all sit down, tie the ponies up, there is some grass, throw the
bags down and rest. >>

Bilbo: Well, I guess that we can start searching the Mountain this whole
week for the secret door.

Thorin: We will start tomorrow.

<<The next day. >>

Bilbo: Now that we have had breakfast, we will start to search this western
side of the Mountain for the hidden door. This whole week we’ll search so
do not waster energy. Good luck.

Thorin: We will start now, but two men each day will stay to guard the camp.

<<We see some clips of dwarves searching the mountain for the door. Now
it is night by the campfire, they are all talking. >>

Bilbo: Now Balin, you’re last, tell us what you found.

Balin: Nothing at all.

Thorin: Well, I say bed. Good night.

<<Some more clips of the dwarves and Bilbo looking for the door. A week
later: Fili, Kili, and Bilbo… >>

Fili: My idea of searching more south was good. There are lots of things
here to search.

Bilbo: Yeah, let’s start, after a week searching up there and no results, it
was a good idea coming here.

<<They start searching. Kili suddenly finds an old path leading upwards…>>

Kili: Look at this!

Bilbo: What is it?

Fili: Wow, it’s a path!

Kili: Let’s climb it.

<<They go up. There is a turn…>>

Kili: It’s narrow by this turn, be careful.

Fili: Alright.

Bilbo: Sure.

<<After the narrow part, they reach a platform and looking down they were
looking at the camp. >>

Fili: Wow, there’s out camp.

Bilbo: I guess the path goes southwards and climbs westward.

Kili: Look! Does not that appear to be a hidden door?

Bilbo: It looks like it, and the wall here is smooth. << He puts his hand on
the door. >>

<<The three of them bang on the door, which is flat while the rest of the
wall is rough. They go to the edge again. >>

Fili: Up here!

Bilbo: Everyone!

Kili: Come up here, look what we’ve found!

<<The others rush over to them. They start coming up. >>

Thorin: What is it?

Bombur: <<From below>> Hey! I can’t get up!

Thorin: So, throw some rope down for him to climb.

<<The others throw rope down so that Bombur can climb up. >>

Bombur: I can’t climb up the rope, it’ll break.

Thorin: Then you’ll stay down there…Well what did you find?

Fili: Look at this flat stone wall.

Bilbo: It could be the door.

Kili: It’s also hallow. It might just be the secret passage.

Thorin: Get out the tools that Lake-Men gave us.

<< Gloin, Ori, Dori, and Nori take out a pick-axe, axe, shovel, and chisel.
They all try getting the door open by hitting the door. >>

Dori: Ow.

Nori: <<Screams with pain>>

Ori: It made a huge echo.

<<All the tools are broken. >>

Bilbo: Well the door is magic…Ha ha.

Thorin: Wand the echo is no care. Well, do you remember what Elrond
said?

Elrond <<Voice>>: “Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and
the last ray of the setting sun shall shine upon the keyhole”.

Bilbo: Look, there’s the thrush!

<<In the middle of the grassy place, a thrush on a rock is cracking a
snail’s shell. >>

Thorin: We must wait for the setting sun’s ray!

<<The sun is about to go down. The sun disappears, and the dwarves
complain. Then a last ray comes through the clouds, and hits the door. A
flab of stone falls off, and a keyhole appears. >>

Gloin: Push the door, before it’s too late!

<<All the dwarves push the door in vain. >>

Bilbo: Thorin, the Key, the key that went with the map! Try it now while
there’s still time!

<<Thorin pushes the dwarves out of the way, while taking the key off his
neck. >>

Thorin: Out of the way.

<<Thorin puts the key in the door, it fits, and he turns it. >>

Thorin: Help me push the door inwards!

<The dwarves all push the door and it moves inwards by itself soundlessly.
We see darkness. A view of the sky and the sun is gone but there is still
some little light. >>

Thorin: Now is time for our esteemed Mr.Baggins, who has proved himself
a good companion on our long road, and a hobbit full of courage and
resource far exceeding his size, and if I might say so possessed of good
luck far exceeding the usual allowance. Now is the time for him to earn his
Reward. Now remember, Burglar Baggins, that this reward remains only to
be one fourteenth of the treasure, so don’t take all of it for now. Actually,
it would be a good idea not to take any of the treasure for yourself at this
moment. You must wait for the dragon Smaug to be killed, and then you
can claim your share of the treasure. You must go down the tunnel now,
and see what there is to see. If possible, you must get me the silver cup
of Thrór. You will know it when you see it.

Bilbo: Thorin, if you mean you think that it is my job to go into the secret
passage first, O Thorin Thráin’s son, Thrór’s son, may your beard grow
ever longer, say so at once and have done! I might refuse. I have got you
out of two messes already, which were hardly in the original bargain, so
that I am, I think, already owed some reward. But somehow I don’t think I
shall refuse. Perhaps I have begun to trust my luck more than I used to in
the old days. But anyway I think I will go and have a peep at once and get
it over with. Now, who’s coming with me?

<<Fili and Kili lean on one leg, and the rest look uncomfortable, except
old Balin, the lookout man. >>

Balin: I’ll come inside at least, and perhaps a bit of the way too; ready to call for help if necessary.

Bilbo: I didn’t expect a chorus of volunteers!

Thorin: If you are going, you’d best go now.

Bilbo: Alright, alright. Let’s go Balin!

<<We see Bilbo and Balin wave goodbye and go into the passage of
secrecy. We see them walk out of sight. Balin stops where he can see the
tunnel entrance barely, but can still here the others. >>

Balin: Alright, Good Luck!

Bilbo: Thanks, hopefully I’ll see you later.

<<Bilbo goes on alone, unloosens the sword in its sheath, and puts on the
ring. Now we see him walking, ahead is a doorway and a red light is seen
beyond it. It is hot in the tunnel now and some wisps of vapour come up.
Bilbo is sweating and a throbbing noise is heard. >>

Bilbo: Now you are in for it at last, Bilbo Baggins. You went and put your
foot right in it that night of the party, and now you have got to pull it out
and pay for it! Dear me, what a fool I was and am! I have absolutely no
use for dragon-guarded treasures, and the whole lot could stay here
forever, if only I could wake up and find this beastly tunnel was my own
front-hall at home. But I’ll never wake up at this rate. It is getting hot in
here!

<<Bilbo is going through the entrance to the great hall. He goes through
and stares in awe. >>

Bilbo: I was wrong! This is useful treasure. I could buy the Shire. I could be
rich, richer than any I’ll ever know. But the dragon guards it. Best not
meddle with him; Now to find the Silver Cup of Thrór.

<<We see Bilbo looking through the treasure. He is in front of the dragon
and picked up the cup he saw. The dragon stirred a wing, opened a claw,
and the rumble of his snoring changed its note. Bilbo flees in terror. We
see him go through the tunnel entrance. Now we see Balin, falling asleep,
and Bilbo runs into him. >>

Bilbo: Balin!

Balin: You’re back!

Bilbo: Yeah, with the cup!

<<Bilbo holds the cup up and Balin stares at it. >>

Balin: Could I handle it?

Bilbo: Sure.

<<Balin holds it and looks at it. He hands it back >>

Balin: Here you are. We best go back up to them, they’ll be pleased.

<<Balin and Bilbo start up the passage. Now we see them coming out of
the tunnel entrance. The dwarves stare at Bilbo. >>

Thorin: Well, did you get the cup?

Bilbo: Yes, here.

<<Thorin grabs it and stares at it. Bilbo rests on the ground with Balin. The
others crowd around looking at the cup. >>

Thorin: A fine work of art, would you not say Bilbo?

Bilbo: I would say it is. And a frightening way to get it too, I might…

<<We hear the Mountain rumble. The door slams and stops from shutting
by hitting a stone. The dwarves cower down in fear. >>

Thorin: You ridiculous burglar. Why did you get the cup, something Smaug
would miss? How dare you!

Bilbo: Quick! The door, before it’s too late!

<<They all get up and creep to the door. >>

Bifur: My cousins! Bofur and Bombur; we have forgotten them; they are
down in the valley with the food!

Gloin: They will be slain…

Dori: …And all the ponies too!

Ori: And all our stores lost!

Nori: We can do nothing!

Thorin: Nonsense! We cannot leave them. Get inside Mr. Baggins, Balin,
Dwalin, and Fili and Kili. The dragon won’t have all of us. Now you others
where are the ropes? Be quick!

<<Gloin and Oin hold one rope. Dori and Nori hold another. >>

Bifur: Bofur! Bombur! Wake up!

Bofur: What is it?

Bifur: The dragon is coming! Climb up the ropes with the baggage!

Bombur: I can’t climb!

Bifur: You’ll have to if you want your life!

Sorry for being away recently...Anyhow here is more...and PLEASE COMMENT

<<Bombur climbs up one rope. Bofur is climbing the other with half the baggage. Both make it up. Bofur and Bifur go down for the rest of the baggage. Bombur and Ori go in the tunnel with some baggage. Bifur and Bofur climb up with the rest of the baggage. Fire is seen from the distance. >>

Thorin: Come on!

<<Bifur comes up and runs in the tunnel with some baggage. Dori and Nori
run in the tunnel with their rope. Bofur comes up. He hands some baggage
to Thorin and Gloin and Oin get the rope up. The dragon is seen flying
towards them. A great wind is, and fire light is flashing in the rocks. Gloin
and Oin go in the tunnel, Bofur and Thorin go in after them. We see
Smaug lick the mountainside with flame. Smaug’s fire goes through the
crack in the secret door and the dwarves back up. Then nothing is seen.
We hear the ponies shriek in terror, and Smaug goes after them. This
whole time no full view of Smaug is seen. >>

Thorin: That’ll be the end of our poor beasts! Nothing can escape Smaug
once he sees it.

<<We see a glimpse of the dwarves in the tunnel. Now light streams
through the crack in the door. >>

Bilbo: Thorin, what are we going to do? It’s morning.

Dwalin: All last night, since the attack, Smaug has been going around the
Mountain looking for us.

Balin: And we saw his fire from midnight until dawn.

Thorin: Here we are, and here will shall have to stay, unless any one
fancies tramping the long open miles back to the river with Smaug on the
watch!

Balin: If we wait long enough, Smaug may relax his watch sufficiently so
that we may be able to walk to the river.

Dwalin: But by then we’ll have no food.

Gloin: Dangers of this kind are inevitable!

Dori: …Especially with dealing with such a guardian of the treasure.

Ori: But it is no good giving up the quest yet.

Nori: We do have enough food to last us some time though. But there is
no way of getting rid of Smaug.

Bilbo: I feel inclined to point out that that was a weak point in our plans.

Dori: Well, it was you that stirred the dragon anyway.

Ori: Yeah, you’re the one that brought the cup back.

Thorin: It is all Bilbo’s fault; and it is the “Cup of Thrór,” Oin.

<<All the dwarves grumble at Bilbo. >>

Bilbo: What else do you suppose a burglar is to do? <<Angrily>>I was not
engaged to kill a dragon, that is warrior’s work, but to steal treasure. I
made the best beginning I could. Did you expect me to trot back with the
whole hoard of Thrór on my back? If there is any grumbling to be done, I
think I might have a say. You ought to have brought five hundred burglars
not one. I am sure it reflects great credit on your grandfather, but you
cannot pretend that you ever made the vast extent of his wealth clear to
me. I should want hundreds of years to bring it all up, if I was fifty times
as big, and Smaug as tame as a rabbit.

Thorin: I am sorry.

<<All the dwarves follow Thorin’s example. >>

Thorin: What then do you propose we should do, Mr. Baggins?

Bilbo: I have no idea at the moment if you mean about removing the
treasure. That obviously depends entirely on some new turn of events and
the getting rid of Smaug. That is not in my blood-line but I’ll do my best
to think on it. Personally I have no hopes at all and wish I was not here.

Thorin: Never mind that for the moment! What are we to do now…today!

Bilbo: Well, I should say we can do nothing but stay where we are. By day
we can no doubt creep safely enough to take the air. Perhaps before long
someone will go to the river to replenish our supplies. But in the
meanwhile everyone ought to be well inside the tunnel by night. Now, I will
make you an offer. I have got my ring and will creep down this very noon
and see what Smaug is up to. Perhaps something will turn up. ‘Every worm
has its weak spot,’ as my father used to say, though not I am sure from
personal experience.

Thorin: Good idea.

Bilbo: Well, I guess I’ll be going. See you all later!

<<Bilbo goes down the tunnel. We see him reach the door. Barely a red
glow, and very little smoke>>

Bilbo: Old Smaug is weary and asleep. He can’t see me and he won’t hear
me. Cheer up Bilbo!

<<Bilbo steps out of the tunnel, then a piercing ray of red light comes
from Smaug’s eye. >>

Smaug: Well thief! I smell you and I feel your air. I hear your breath.
Come along! Help yourself again, there is plenty and to spare!

<<During this conversation, Bilbo keeps moving around the room, near the
door and Smaug. Smaug has his red rays of light, from his eyes, looking
all around for Bilbo. >>

Bilbo: No thank you, O Smaug the Tremendous! I did not come for
presents. I only wished to have a look at you and see if you were truly as
great as tales say. I did not believe them.

Smaug: Do you now?

Bilbo: Truly, songs and tales fall utterly short of the reality, O Smaug the
Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities!

Smaug: You have nice manners, for a thief and a liar. You seem familiar
with my name, but I don’t remember smelling you before. Who are you,
and where do you come from, might I ask?

Bilbo: You may indeed! I come from under the hill and under the hills and
over the hills my paths led; and through the air. I am he that walks
unseen.

Smaug: So I can well believe, but that is hardly your usual name.

Bilbo: I am the clue-finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. I was chosen
for the lucky number.

Smaug: Lovely titles! But lucky numbers don’t always come off.

Bilbo: I am he that buries his friends alive and drowns them and draws
them alive again from the water. I came from the end of a bag, but no
bag went over me.

Smaug: These don’t sound so creditable!

Bilbo: I am the friend of bears and the guest of eagles. I am Ring-Winner
and Luck-Wearer; and I am Barrel-rider.

Smaug: That’s better! But don’t let your imagination run away with you!
<<To himself>> I thought so last night, Lake-men, some nasty scheme of
those miserable tub-trading Lake-men, or I’m a lizard. I haven’t been
down that way for an age and an age; but I will soon alter that! <<To
Bilbo>> Very well, O Barrel-rider! Maybe barrel was your pony’s name; and
maybe not, though it was fat enough. You may walk unseen, but you did
not walk all the way. Let me tell you I ate six ponies last night, and I shall
catch and eat all the others before long. In return for the excellent meal, I
will give you one piece of advice for your good: Don’t have more to do with
dwarves than you can help!

Bilbo: Dwarves?

Smaug: I know the smell and taste of dwarf, no one better. Don’t tell me
that I can eat a dwarf-ridden pony and not know it! You’ll come to a bad
end, if you go with such friends, Thief Barrel-rider. I don’t mind if you go
back and tell them so, from me. I suppose you got a fair price for that cup
last night? Come now, did you?

Bilbo: Nothing!

Smaug: Nothing at all! Well that’s just like them. And I suppose they are
all skulking outside, and your job is to do all the dangerous work and get
what you can when I’m not looking, for them? And you will get a fair share?
Don’t you believe it! If you get off alive, you will be lucky.

Bilbo: You don’t know everything, O Smaug the Mighty. Not gold alone
brought us hither.

Smaug: Why not say ‘us fourteen’ and be done with it, Mr. Lucky Number?
I am pleased to hear that you had other business in these parts besides
my gold. In that case you may, perhaps, not altogether waste your time. I
don’t know if it has ever occurred to you that, even if you could steal the
gold bit by bit, a matter of a hundred years or so, you could not get it very
far. Not much use on the mountain side. Not much use in the Forest. Bless
me! A fourteenth share, I suppose, or something like it, those were the
terms eh? What about delivery? What about cartage? What about armed guards and tolls?

Bilbo: I tell you, that gold was only an afterthought for us. We came over
hill and under hill, by wave and wind, for Revenge. Surely, O Smaug the
inaccessibly wealthy, you must realize that your success has made you
some bitter enemies.

<<The scene switches to the dwarves talking, they are outside. >>

Kili: When do you think Bilbo will come back?

Fili: Sooner than later.

Dori: Hopefully.

Ori: I wonder what he found out.

Nori: We’ll soon find out.

Thorin: The burglar must not do anything foolish to get himself, or us, hurt.

<<All of a sudden we hear Smaug. Smaug makes much noise and the
Mountain shakes. The dwarves cower in fear. >>

Balin: That must be the end of the burglar!

Dwalin: What a horrible end!

Gloin: At least the blame of his death isn’t on us.

Thorin: It’s on all of us!

Oin: No, because he was the one who wanted to go down there.

Thorin: Let’s stay down hidden for a few minutes.

<<All of a sudden Bilbo flies out of the secret passage>>

Bilbo: Help!

Thorin: What’s wrong?

Bilbo: My back was on fire, I got rid of it. I need water!

<<Balin gets Bilbo a cup of water, while Kili dumps water down his back. >>

Bilbo: Thanks, much better!

Balin: What happened down there?

Bilbo: Uhh…

Kili: You know I would really like it if you told me why I needed to pour
water down your back!

Bilbo: Alright.

<<Now we see, it is dark evening, Bilbo finishing where we left off with
Smaug’s conversation. >>

Bilbo: Then after telling Smaug that we came for revenge, he let out huge
loud laugh.

<<We go back to the conversation. >>

Smaug: Revenge! The King under the Mountain is dead and where are his
kin that dare seek revenge? Girion Lord of Dale is dead, and I have eaten
his people like a wolf among sheep. I kill where I wish and none dare
resist. I laid low the warriors of old and none are like them in the world
today. Then I was young and tender, now I am strong! Thief in the
Shadows! My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws
spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my
breath, death!

Bilbo: I have always understood that dragons are softer underneath.

Smaug: Your information is wrong. I am armoured above and below with
iron scales and jewels.

Bilbo: “Dazzlingly Marvelous! Perfect! Flawless! Staggering!” <<Voice>> Old
Fool, there is a large patch in the middle of your left breast as bare as a
snail out of its shell! <<We have a glimpse of Smaug’s underside. No
voice. >> Well, I must not detain your Magnificence any longer, or keep
you from your much needed rest. Ponies take some catching I believe,
after a long start. And so do burglars!

<<Bilbo flies up the tunnel and Smaug shoots fire up it. Smoke rises in
the screen. We go back to the dwarves. >>

Bilbo: It was an unfortunate remark for he shot fire and smoke after me.
Never laugh at live dragons, I say. Drat the bird! I do believe he’s listening.

<<We see the thrush cocking his head sideways. >>

Thorin: Leave him alone! The thrushes are good and friendly. This is a
very old bird indeed, and is maybe the last left of the ancient breed that
used to live here, tame to the hands of my Father and Grandfather. They
were a long-lived and magical race. The Men of Dale used to have the trick of understanding their language, and used them for messengers to fly to the Men of the Lake, and elsewhere.

Bilbo: Well, he’ll have news to take to Lake-Town alright, if that’s what he
is after.

Thorin: Well that is his business, what do you thing Smaug’s next move is?

Bilbo: I have a nasty feeling that Smaug knows we came from Lake-Town
or at least had their help; and I have a horrible feeling that his next move
is in that direction. I wish I had not said Barrel-Rider; it would make a
blind rabbit think of the Lake-Men.

Balin: Well it can’t be helped. I have always heard that a slip in talking
with a dragon is hard not to do. You came back alive after having words
with Smaug. You found one useful thing at any rate and it may be a mercy
and a blessing yet to know of that bare patch in the Worm’s diamond
waistcoat.

<<We see the evening sky. Now it is night and everything is quiet except
for the dwarves’ voices >>

Thorin: Stabbing him in his sleep will most likely end in a disaster than a
bold frontal attack.

Dwalin: Anyhow catching a dragon napping is harder than it sounds.

Gloin: Dangers of this kind are inevitable!

Dori: Stabbing him in his sleep may still not end in disaster, as long as his
bottom side is open to us.

Bilbo: I am sure we are very unsafe here, and I don’t see the point of
sitting here. The dragon has withered all the pleasant grass, and anyway
the night has come and it is cold. But I feel it in my bones that this place
will be attacked again. Smaug knows now how I came down to his hall, and
we can trust him to guess where the other end of the tunnel is. He may
break all this side of the Mountain to bits, if necessary, to stop up our
entrance, and if we are smashed with it, the better he will like it.

Thorin: You are very gloomy, Mr. Baggins.

Bilbo: Smaug will be coming out at any minute now, and our only hope is
to get well in the tunnel and shut the door.

Thorin: Well, it is cold, and even if you’re wrong I’ll still go inside.

<<They all go in the tunnel. He does not shut the door though >>

Thorin: We’ll go inside but not take the risk of shutting the door.

Bilbo: Smaug…

Thorin: We knew it would be a desperate venture and we know that still.
And I still think that when we have won the treasure it will be time enough
to think what to do about it. As for your share Mr. Baggins, I assure you we
are more than grateful and you shall choose your own fourteenth share, as
soon as we have anything to divide. I am sorry that transportation is yours
to handle but we will do everything we can for you, Believe me or not as
you like!

Balin: Thorin do you remember that great ruby pendant that your father
made!

Thorin: That was a nice piece of art, but the Necklace of Girion!

Balin: Ahh! The Necklace was made for Girion Lord of Dale, made of
five-hundred emeralds green as grass, which he gave for the arming of his
eldest son in a coat of dwarf-linked rings the like of which had never been
made before, for it was wrought of pure silver to the power and strength of
triple steel!

Thorin: But fairest of all was the great white gem, which the dwarves had
found beneath the roots of the Mountain, the Heart of the Mountain, the
Arkenstone of Thráin! The Arkenstone! It was like a globe with a thousand
facets; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow
under the stars, like rain upon the moon!

Bilbo: Shut the door! I fear that dragon in my marrow. I like this silence far
less than the uproar of last night. Shut the door before it is too late!

<<Thorin gets up to shut the door. At that moment everything shakes and
rocks come bounding in the tunnel. Thorin and yells “Run”. So they all get
up and run with the bags. Outside we see Smaug licking the
mountainsides with flame and blowing everything everywhere. Then he
stops. >>

Smaug: Barrel-Rider! <<Snorts>> Your feet came from the waterside and up the water you came without a doubt. I don’t know your smell, but if you
are not one of those scrawny men of the Lake, you had their help. They shall see the real King under the Mountain!

<<He rises in fire and goes south. Now we see the dwarves a huddled up
halfway down the tunnel. There are rocks and rubble just before them
upwards. They talk in whispers. >>

Thorin: Days after days of sitting here as it seems, and I am choked and
dazed for want of air.

Bilbo: I would welcome some sound from below; in this silence I fear some
cunning devilry of his. But we cannot sit here forever.

Thorin: I must fell the wind on my face soon or die. I think I would rather
be smashed by Smaug in the open than suffocate in here!

Balin: We are trapped though!

<<The dwarves groan. >>

Nori: This is the end!

Oin: We shall die here!

Ori: Unless someone thinks of something…

Bifur: Which is so unlikely it’s not even possible.

<<The dwarves moan again. >>

Bilbo: Come, come! ‘While there’s life there’s hope!’ as my father used to
say, and ‘Third time pays for all’. I am going down the tunnel once again.
I have been that way twice, when I knew there was a dragon at the end, so
I will risk a third visit when I am no longer sure. Anyway the only way out is
down. And I think this time you had better all come with me, and take your
packs.

Dwalin: He is right, we might as well go.

<<We see Bilbo and Thorin leading them down the passage. Suddenly
Bilbo put his hand on thin air and went tumbling through the passage. He
lays face downwards. There is a white glow far off in the pile. >>

Bilbo: Confound you Smaug, you worm! Stop playing hide-and-seek! Give
me a light, and then eat me, if you can catch me! Now I wonder what on
earth Smaug is playing at. He is not at home today, or tonight, or
whatever it is, I do believe. If Oin and Gloin have not lost their tinder-
boxes, perhaps we can make a little light, and have a look around before
the luck turns…

<<He gets up. The dwarves whisper Shh! >>

Bilbo: ...Light! Can anybody make a light!

<< No answer comes from the dwarves. Bilbo stamps on the floor and still
calls out “Light!” >>

Thorin: Alright! Oin and Gloin make a torch for him!

<<Bilbo comes over and takes the torch. >>

Bilbo: Why didn't you light the others?

Thorin: You're still the official burglar, and investigator. If you want to risk
a light, so be it, it’s your affair, but we'll wait in the tunnel for your report!

Bilbo: All right!

<<The dwarves sit in the doorway and watch. Bilbo goes up and across the
mound. Gold and diamonds twinkle. Bilbo stands in front of the white
gleam, the Arkenstone of Thráin. >>

Bilbo: What is this? This must be the Arkenstone of Thráin, at least I
guess from Thorin’s description!

<<Bilbo picks up the gem and handles it in awe. Then he puts it in his
pocket. >>

Bilbo: Now I am a burglar indeed! I must tell the dwarves sometime about
it. They did say I could pick and choose my own share; and I think I’ll take
this if they take all the rest!

<<Bilbo goes across the floor to great doors opened. He gets a draught of
air and sees great stairways. Then a bat swoops over him and his torch
goes in a puddle of water. >>

Bilbo: Now what am I to do, just a bat, not Smaug? Thorin! Balin! Dwalin!
Fili! Kili! Oin! Gloin! The light’s gone out! Someone come and find me and
help me!

<<We go to the dwarves. >>

Bofur: What’s that?

Thorin: Now what on earth, or under it, is that?

Kili: It’s Bilbo!

Balin: What do you hear?

Fili: He is screaming help!

Thorin: Certainly not the dragon or he would not go on squeaking!

Balin: It seems we have got to go and help our burglar; it is our turn at
last!

Thorin: Oin and Gloin, go light torches for us all!

<<Oin and Gloin light torches for everyone. Now everyone has torches. >>

Thorin: Now that everyone has lights let’s go!

Gloin: Everyone, we should stay in single file.

Oin: Move Bombur!

Thorin: Come on!

<<They all are going along the wall single file to Bilbo. There Gloin hands
him a torch. >>

Gloin: Here’s a torch!

Bilbo: Thank you.

Ori: What happened?

Bilbo: A bat shocked me and my torch fell in a puddle!

Thorin: What! I am relieved that nothing worse happened, but I am still
grumpy for being frightened for nothing!

<<During this time, some other dwarves in the background gather gold…>>

Kili: Look at these harps!

Fili: They are still in tune, which is a shock!

Thorin: The dragon has no need for music!

<<All but Bilbo go through the piles of jewels and gold, putting some in
the pockets…>

Thorin: Bilbo, here is the first payment for your reward! Cast off your old
cloak and put this on!

<<Thorin then hands Bilbo a mithril coat who puts it on. >>

Bilbo: What is this?

Thorin: This is true silver, the elves call it mithril. It is light, but strong as
triple steel. Also here is a belt and helmet.

<<Thorin now hands Bilbo a belt with diamonds and jewels. The helmet is
made of leather and has a buckle of steel. White gems are upon it. Bilbo
puts both on. Thorin goes off. >>

Bilbo: I feel magnificent; though I would give some of those precious
goblets for a drink of something cheery out of one of Beorn’s wooden
bowls. Thorin! What next? We are armed, but what good has any armour
ever been before against Smaug the Dreadful? This treasure is not yet won
back. We are not looking for gold yet, but for a way of escape. And we
have tempted luck too long.

Thorin: You speak the truth. Come here, by the gates.

<<We see some dwarves drop diamonds or gold in regret and walk to the
gates. >>

Thorin: Let us go! I will guide you. Not in a thousand years should I forget
the ways of this place. Single file now!

<<We see them walk off, with many a glance back of longing, and all have
their torches held high up…In single file. They have their old cloaks over
their armour. We see some glimpses of them walking along dark
passages and up long stairways. Some bats may fly from the lights. Now
we see them suddenly stop at the top of a staircase. >>

Balin: Do you hear him?

Fili: No dragon!

Dori: Let’s move!

Thorin: Straight is the way to go.

Bilbo: There is a locked door on our right!

<<All the dwarves turn and look right. They all go over to it. >>

Thorin: This is the food room…Where we stored food and other supplies!

Bilbo: I have a talent for picking locks, let me have a try!

<<Bilbo plays with the lock. The dwarves groan. >>

Gloin: This’ll take forever!

<<Then the door swings open wide. >>

Bombur: Can you teach me how to do that?

Bilbo: I don’t think that’s such a good idea.

Bombur: Probably right. Oh no!

<<Bombur rushes in the room, kneels down , and weeps. There are dead
bodies and burnt food… >>

Thorin: It is alright, our brothers’ rest in peace…

Bombur: That’s alright...but the food, the glorious food, its destroyed,
poisonous, inedible...

Thorin: <<Coughs>> Umm…We must go.

<<Bombur gets up and we see him leave. Now they are in a great hall.
There is a mess, charred tables, chairs, bones…>>

Thorin: This is the Great, err, Once Great Chamber of Thrór. Not far off is
the Front-Gate.

<<We see some glimpse of the mess. Now we see them walking down a
hall and there are the broken gates. A river runs in the exact middle of the
hall out of the gates. >>

Thorin: This is the birth of the Running River; it runs out of these old
gates.

Bilbo: Well! I never expected to be looking out of these gates. And I never expected to be so pleased to see the sun again, but this wind is cold.

Bombur: It seems to be late morning, or I suppose it is more or less
breakfast time, if there is any breakfast to have.

Bilbo: But I don’t feel that Smaug’s front doorstep is the safest place for a
meal. Let’s find a place to sit down in peace!

Balin: Quite right! And I do know a place: we ought to go to the old
look-out post at the South-West corner of the Mountain.

Bilbo: How far is that?

Balin: Five hours march, I should think. It will be rough going. The old
road is broken, but there is a bridge leading to steep stairs, and so on to
a road running towards Ravenhill, the old look-out post. A hard climb too
even if the steps are still there.

Bilbo: Dear me! More walking and more climbing without breakfast, I
wonder how many breakfasts, and other meals, we have missed inside
that nasty, clock-less, timeless hole?

Thorin: Come, come! Don’t call my palace a nasty hole! You wait till it has
been cleaned and redecorated!

Bilbo: That won’t be till Smaug is dead. In the meanwhile where is he? I
hope he is not up on the Mountain looking down at us!

<<Everyone looks up at the Mountain. >>

Dori: We must move away from here. I feel as if his eyes were on the back
of my head.

Thorin: Well, Balin lead us!

<<Balin leads the others down, who keep glimpsing at the top of the
Mountain. A few glimpses of them walking along. Now they are at some
ruins…Ravenhill. >>

Bilbo: A nice trip; no bridge, broken paths on a steep hill, no breakfast,
what more could a hobbit, or dwarf, want?

<<As Balin speaks, some eat cram. >>

Balin: We can eat now. Here in the old days we used always to keep
watchmen, and back in there was the guardroom. There were several
places like this around the Mountain. But there was small need for watch in
the days of our prosperity, and the guards were made over-comfortable,
perhaps, otherwise we might have had longer warnings of the dragon, and
things gone different. Still, here we can lie hid and sheltered for some
time, and see much without being seen.

Dori: Not much use if we have been seen coming here.

Thorin: You think too well that Smaug is on top of the Mountain, but we
must take our chances. We can go no further today.

Nori: What is to be done?

Thorin: Before taking a move, we must find where Smaug is.

<<Each look in different directions, but then all look south. >>

Dwalin: No sign of him, or any living creature, to the East.

Fili: Nothing is in the East.

Kili: No signs in the North.

Oin: To the South, there is not sign of the dragon, but a great gathering of
birds.

<<They all look in wonder, gazing south. >>

Thorin: Something is happening, and I would like to know what is going
on…But we must leave this to wonder at, we all should eat or take a rest.

<<The Scene ends. Same place; the dwarves are wandering aimlessly, and
are doing nothing. All of a sudden the thrush comes. >>

Bilbo: Look! There is that old thrush again! He seems to have escaped
when Smaug smashed the mountain-side!

<<The thrush flies onto a rock and caws. Then he cocks his head, and
does it again >>

Balin: I believe he is trying to tell us something, but I cannot follow the
speech of such birds, it is very quick and difficult.

Bilbo: He seems very excited.

Balin: I only wish he was a raven!

Bilbo: Why is that?

Thorin: There used to be great friendship between the ravens and the
people of Thrór; and they often brought us secret news, and were rewarded
with such bright things as they coveted to hide in their dwellings. They live
many a year, and their memories are long, and they hand on their wisdom
to their children. I knew many among the ravens of the rocks when I was a dwarf-lad. This very height was once named Ravenhill, because there was a wise and famous pair, old Carc and his wife that lived here above the guard-chamber. But I don’t suppose that any of that ancient breed linger here now.

<<During Thorin’s speech the Thrush has flown away. >>

Bilbo: Unfortunately the thrush has flown away!

Balin: I wonder what he came for. He probably understood us, though we
did not understand him. Keep watch now, and see what happens.

<<Suddenly the thrush arrives with a decrepit old bird. A bald head had it
and he was slow of flight. The two birds both perch on the rock the thrush
had gone on earlier. >>

Roäc: O Thorin son Thráin, and Balin son of Fundin. I am Roäc son of
Carc. Carc is dead, but he was well known to you once. It is a hundred
years and three and fifty since I came out of the egg, but I do not forget
what my father told me. Now I am the chief of the great ravens of the
Mountain. We are few, but we remember still the king that was of old. Most
of my people are abroad, for there are great tidings in the South. Some
are tidings of joy to you, and some you will not think so good. Behold! The
birds are gathering back again to the Mountain and to Dale from South,
East, and West, for word has gone out that Smaug is dead!

Nori: Dead!

Ori: Dead!

Oin: Dead!

Bifur: Then we have been in needless fear...

Bofur: ...And the treasure is ours!

<<Then all the dwarves…plus Bilbo…rejoice and caper about with joy. >>

Roäc: Yes, dead! The thrush, May his feathers never fall, saw him die, and
we may trust his words. He saw him fall in battle with the men of Esgaroth
the third night back from now at the rising of the moon.

Thorin: Alright everyone settle down, Roäc is speaking!

Roäc: So much for joy, Thorin Oakenshield. You may go back to your halls
in safety; all the treasure is yours, for the moment. But many are
gathering hither beside the birds. The news of the death of the guardian
has already gone far and wide, and the legend of the wealth of Thrór has
not lost in the telling; many are eager for a share of the spoil. Already a
host of the elves is on the way, and carrion birds are with them hoping for
battle and slaughter. By the Lake, men murmur that their sorrows are due
to the dwarves; for they are homeless and many have died. They too think
too find amends from your treasure, whether you are alive or dead. Your
own wisdom must decide your course; but 13 is small remnant of the great
folk of Durin that once dwelt here, and now are scattered far. If you will listen to my counsel, you will not trust the Master of the Lake-Men, but
rather Bard, or the race of Dale, of the line of Girion; he is a grim man but
true. We would see peace once more among dwarves and men and elves
after the long desolation; but it may cost you dear in gold. I have spoken!

Thorin: Our thanks Roäc, son of Carc. You and your people shall not be
forgotten. But none of our gold shall thieves take or the violent carry off
while we are alive. We would like to hear how Smaug was killed.

<<Now we zoom onto Roäc. >>

Roäc: Ere three nights back, Smaug smashed the Mountainside and the thrush here beside me saw him. Then Smaug went away south and the thrush followed him...

<<Now we zoom into Roäc’s eye...now we see the dark night sky. We look down and we are in Lake-Town. Bard and two guards are on the dock guarding. >>

What's going on here? No No

The actual screenplays will be finalized soon. We heard this from Barry Osborne.

As far as what's posted here, from the very beginning it doesn't work for me. It's not how Thorin would speak, nor does he have knowledge of much of what he's describing. Wink

PS... I would suggest you get FINAL DRAFT, a great program that will help you with your pacing.

I have to be honest here and say that there are a lot of excellent lines of dialogue in this. Unfortunately they are all the ones which have been lifted verbatim from the book.

The rest of it is, I'm sorry to say, pretty poor stuff. The pacing is horrible. The massive monologue at the beginning was off-putting, unnecessary, poorly written (changing tenses seemingly at random) and in many details incorrect (assuming it is meant to be a faithful retelling of Tolkien's history of Middle-Earth).

Some of the lines are ludicrous e.g. "Ahh, tea time. Oh, I forgot about Gandalf."

The scenes that have been made up (e.g. the incident with Bombur stealing the cakes) are often jarringly at odds with the characters and events in the original book (and employ some strange variation on standard English grammar).
As an example...
Quote:

Gandalf: Get back here or I’ll break the door down. <<Bilbo opens the door>>
Bilbo: What may be your inquiries?

I could go on...

It reads like one of the parody scripts from the now-disappeared 'Jimcalagon' website or possibly a lost script from the screenwriters of Bakshi's Lord Of The Rings.

Sorry CAMB but you have asked repeatedly for opinions and I can only assume that most people here are too polite to tell you what they really think so have stayed silent.

Thanks for the comments...Actually I changed the huge dialogue in the beginning, and it is now a few sentences long at most. You might be right about my lame writing skills. This is all I will post now, and any type of comments are appreciated; rude or polite. I will except the comments as the truth, provided there is a good reason for it. Farewell
