TACO BELL!

We don't really have any of these in Canada, but I eat there everytime I head to the states.

Agree with Taco Bell, Rose. When I lived in SF there was one about two blocks from my house, and I had to pass it on the way home. You KNOW I stopped there several times a week. Big Grin

Panera here is pretty far from where I live, otherwise I would have tried it already. But if the soup sucks...well, then probably not, because I can't do the big crusty sammiches outside of my home. Rolling Eyes

Ah yes. Panera. They make good pastries and bagels, but I prefer sandwiches made elsewhere. And salads.

Olive Garden is OK for a quick lunch, but I've really been spoiled on Italian food by the best. The only one that comes close to the ideal is Johnny Carino's.

The BEST Italian food I've ever had was at a little authentic Italian bistro in New York City by the name of 'Becco's'. TO. DIE. FOR. I think only the bartender spoke English. Amazing food & atmosphere. I'd go to New York just to eat there again. *sigh* Everything else pales in comparison.

And for me, here in Vancouver, it is Little Italy. But the BEST I ever had out was in Santa Barbara, the 1812 was the name of the place and I could have eaten there every night. They had this sizzling mushroom and garlic appetizer that was so over the top and the BEST garlic bread and all the pasta dishes were made from scratch pasta. SO good. I don't even know if they are still there, that was MANY moons ago.

Rose, I should think that NYC has some really great Italian eateries.

OG is good because they are close to me and I can NOT get enough of the zuppo toscano. CAN NOT!! Big Grin

Best Italian food I have ever had was in Ostia, the harbour just outside Rome.

We ate a superb pasta dish with spaghetti, prawns, scallops and mussels in a light lemon sauce. Then a veal steak with a cheese sauce and lovely scallop potatoes.

To finish was a proper Italian ice cream. A cassata with peaches.

To die for.

Zuppa Toscana.. I love that too.. and the salad.

Veal. I need to find me some veal.. I haven't had that in ages... and I love it. You don't see many calves in the little huts like you used to. PETA must be doing their job well.

I think I need to seek out some of these amazing restaurants. The best places I ate at in the U.K. was the Royal Highland Hotel in Inverness and the Last Drop Village/hotel in Bolton.

Now, the best food I ever ate happened just recently in Seattle at Compagna's. Oh My Goodness. The mussel dish and the escargots both just melted in your mouth and I have dreamed of it several times since going there a few weeks ago.

Also there is a place in Vegas called Alpine Village that has the best food in the world. I can't even describe how good it is. It is a steak and seafood restaurant with a Rathskeller downstairs. So much fun and so good.

There aren't a great deal of really good restaurants around here. We do have a place in town that makes great mexican food, if that is what one is looking for. We have a steak place we like to go to.. but it's an hour drive into the country, not bad if you have the time. I am sure there are great restaurants in Milwaukee, but we don't go there often to eat out... well, we don't eat out much at all. Razz

Morning m'lady and all foodies.

Had the spaghetti bolognese last night. Feeling lazy tonight (and will be having masses of food tomorrow at my friends' Halloween party) so I'm considering fish and chips or some other takeaway tonight.

Everybody's talking about scones on other threads. I dearly love them, but I can't find them anywhere, not even at Panera! I wish somebody around would make a good scone.

Easiest thing in the world to make

Ingredients

225g/8oz self raising flour
pinch of salt
55g/2oz butter
25g/1oz caster sugar
150ml/5fl oz milk

Method

1. Heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
2. Mix together the flour and salt and rub in the butter.
3. Stir in the sugar and then the milk to get a soft dough.
4. Turn on to a floured work surface and knead very lightly. Pat out to a round 2cm/¾in thick. Use a 5cm/2in cutter to stamp out rounds and place on a baking sheet. Lightly knead together the rest of the dough and stamp out more scones to use it all up.
5. Brush the tops of the scones with a little milk. Bake for 12-15 minutes until well risen and golden.
6. Cool on a wire rack and serve with butter and good jam and maybe some clotted cream.

Hello my dear friends. Big Grin

Ayslhyn, glad your spaghetti came out great, like I would doubt it. Big Grin What are you making for the party tomorrow?

CR? Do you like to bake? Me? I suck at it, so I rarely do it at all. But that recipe does look good. Also have you checked your local bakery? (not at the grocery store, but a specialty bakery) They might have scones.

Lewie? GM lives in Boston? I would BEST there is great Italian food there.

Iris, hey a burger and fries isn't that bad. Not unless you eat them every night. Big Grin

I'm making about ten tons of fried chicken with all the fixins. I blame you for being up to my eyes in defunct chickens Wink

We are having biscuits, gravy, corncobs with spiced butter and M is attempting a pumpkin pie.

CR I totally agree on the Johnny Carinos being better then Olive Garden. We have both as well.

I work right behind a Taco Bell but I will do anything not to eat there. I prefer Taco Time. Sorry folks but Taco Times portions are bigger and the food seems more like real food rather then cookie cutter stamp outs. Ryan loves Taco Bell.

Pumpkin pies are pretty easy overall. I hope that she bought a can of pumpkin pie mix? It is puree'd pumpkin? That is what makes it all that much easier, but not doing the Thanksgiving thing across the pond you might not be able to get it there?

Hey I will take the blame happily. Fried chicken is GREAT!!! I know you guys will have a blast, as you always do at these Halloween parties.

Don't worry, I am SO over asking for piccies. Twisted Evil

Vanadarlin', as far as I know, I don't have a Taco Time near me here in Vancouver. I know there was one in Lake Oswego, but there was also Baja Taco which is great and we have Chiplotle's which is great, but a bit far to drive for a burrito. Wink

NO but I wish I was. I have two great costumes and no where to go. Rolling Eyes

We have more then two taco places near by darlin. Those are just the fast food places, we also have a Taco's Guemas, El Cazador and El Gitanos. I have been to them all. I used to love El Cazador but they changed their recipes a bit so now I prefer El Gitanos or Taco's Guemas. BTW, El Cazador and Taco's Guemas are almost right behind my house as is Jack in the Box and Crispy Creme Donuts. Oh and a place call the China Wok and our favorite Teriyaki place too. We could walk to Johnny Carino's too and it would be maybe a 15 minute walk one way.

Egads!! I live on food row!!!! Shocked

You lucky lady Vana! had m'lady rwhen not taught me how to cook Mexican food myself I'd still be buying the very lame English supermarket stuff. There are one or two places but they are mostly in central London and I live out on the edge of North London.

M'lady. M had a helluva time finding tinned pumpkin but tracked it down to a place in London which specialises in US foods, presumably for expat Yanks missing their Velveeta and Kraft mac and cheese. She bought some other stuff including a cornbread mix so we'll see how that turns out.

No Halloween parties for me, m'dear. I will put the plastic jack o lantern out with some candy free for the taking. I will be surprised if anyone comes to the door though.

Vanadarlin', we have a ton of mexican food restaurants too, but Chipotle's is fast food, just too far to drive. My Brother stops at Muchas Gracias another fast food place for mexican and also Taco Del Mar, yet another fast food joint. My favorite restaurant is Los Jalapenos. YUM. Big Grin

I thought Halloween was a really big deal in America. One of the most popular holidays.

You get idiots on some websites moaning about "this trashy import from the States" who are conveniently forgetting that it's an aincient festival taken to the USA by European settlers but that the US has developed its own traditions.

Very true Ayslhyn!! Many folks do enjoy and celebrate this holiday but for those of us who do not have a major social life we don't have anywhere to go. I do not go to bars or I am sure I could find something out there tomorrow night. Alas I get off at 7 pm so will miss most of the celebrating anyways so I will stay home and relax.

Ayslhyn, many people do have Halloween parties, but for me, it was when I was a bit younger. Most of the friends I have, have grown children and they do the holiday with their kids. For me, it is a night to turn out the lights and play possum. Big Grin

But that said, IF someone was throwing a costume party, I would love to go. Meaning friends of course. My niece goes every year to a party with her friends.
