Scribbles.. Happy Birthday to your mother! And you will have to take a son or daughter of Purple bush if you move!
Frelga.. young dog.. no antlers yet..
Rowan.. how's those fried oranges? Hmm.. reminds me of Chinese chicken salad.. I've got to make that sometime soon....
I hope to get out the the PNW sometime in the NEAR future. It was disappointing not to make it last summer.. but then we would have had to cut it very short. I am hoping when we make it out that way we will get to see a LOT of things.. and people!

Happy birthday to the Mother Scribe!
So you're thinking of moving to Christina Lake? I've heard you talk about it when you went there this summer. Could you continue with your job there? At least you'll be on this side of the Rockies now. |

Scribbles, I hope that your mum lasts a good long time. And when it is right you will make that move that you want to. How far is Christina Lake from Vancouver? Nevermind, I just found a map and Holy Smokes....it is right on the border of Canada and the US. About two hours north of Spokane, WA. That is so totally cool. And the pictures look awesome!!! That would certainly put you MUCH closer. Happy Birthday to your mum!!
Eru, you are so sweet!!! Trust me if I win the lottery, EVERYONE gets a villa in Tuscany.
My SIL is a teacher at a middle school and she leaves about a half hour every morning after I get here. Well, this year has her running ragged and this morning, she walked out the front door to go to her car. One problem, her car is in the garage, behind a garage door. Poor dear. She needs rest!! |

HELLLLOOOO!
to Scribbles's mom! Hope she still has many years left here among us! But, also hope that you'll get to move to BC sooner than later.
I'm still a bit like I could smell fried oranges, and would be happy to hibernate for the next couple of months. Got to try and crawl between the sheets a bit earlier this evening. Work has been less stressful this week, thank goodness. And on Saturday, we're off for an overnight theatre trip to another town once again. |

Some of my friends bailed on me for the New Year's ski trip. And I almost missed another one, but I just found out that today is the deadline! |

Rowanberry.. you sure get out & about, don't you? Good for you! We don't do so much, which is OK too. I'd love to see a stage performance of 'My Fair Lady'.
Eru.. how disappointing. Maybe there'll be another trip on your horizon. How was your parents trip to .. South America?

Yeah rwhen, most of the folks in Christina Lake nip down over the border to a Costco, about a 30 minute drive I've been told. And getting down to you folks from there will be about 11 hours shorter than from our present location, LOL. Much as I loathe moving, I'm really, really looking forward to relocating.
Mmmm, My Fair Lady, definitely one of my more favourite movies with Audrey Hepburn in it.
Okay, I need to get back to work, instead of ssssneaking about all over TORC with you bunch o' lovable loonies . . .

Retiring????? RETIRING???? What age does Canada allow you to retire with full benefits? Here it is at this moment 65 and I read they are moving that to 67. Everytime I reach an age where I always thought I could retire, they move it forward again. As of now, I still have ten years that I HAVE to work to get full benefits from the govt.
Spokane is about six hours from where I live in WA state, so I would call that MUCH closer. |

I'm going to retire at 40.
Rose, hm? They went to San Diego for a weekend conference a few weeks ago. For Thanksgiving actually. Is that what you're talking about?
rwhen, I can get it as soon as I get my citizenship card back. I applied in the summer and they said something like 8-10 months. I can't take the wait any longer! |

I think it's 65 here too, but quite frankly, I don't care. We're planning to downsize considerably in the house department and hubby will continue to work for a few years. Besides, if I manage to get anything published, I won't exactly be 'retired', just retired from the IT industry . . .
Oh and Rose, you can bet your sweet bippy that I will be taking several sons and daughters of Purple Bush with me to BC. LOL, it'll probably bloom right through the winter there!
Vana, I'm sorry to hear of your friend's loss, but you're right . . . as a Christian she knows where her mother has gone and that it will seem like no time at all before they meet and greet again.
Thank you everyone for the kind and warm Birthday wishes for my mom. She'll be tickled pink next week when I pass them on.
Fried oranges? Hmmmmmm, I've heard of fried green tomatoes, but oranges? Sounds . . . good, actually, LOL.

Keep working, rwhen. The benefits really aren't. Just ask anyone who gets SS, then gets a COLA raise, which Medicare immediately takes from them when they raise their rates. Then you hit the point where Medicare Part D won't cover your meds anymore and you're responsible until it kicks in again...
And we want to government to run everything? They can't handle what they've got already!
*gets off of soap box*
In other news...It's 32 degrees here, and it snowed last night. Not much, but still...

HHHEEEEELLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Iris, you and I are worlds apart on the Health Insurance thing. I have to have insurance and my health is not going to allow me to work for ten more years, two maybe. I need surgery and can't get it. My only hope is that a good comprehensive aggressive health care initiative is passed and SOON. I don't care if it is run by Micky Mouse. But I understand why people are opposed to the government running anything, though they run so much more than people think about daily. And if all the other western world countries can do it, why can't the USA?
Scribbles, I get it now. I wish you ever success on getting published!! Have you already submitted to publishers? I think you would are/will be a brilliant published author and you will have a built in audience.
Eru, how far are you in the process of the wait for the card? 8-10 MONTHS?????? What is up with that precioussssss? :hgu: |

Um, er, ah well, no. First because what I've started isn't finished, and second because the unfinished thing I have, I think is crap. LOLOL. I have about 10 "projects" on the go, but can't seem to get a large enough block of free time to finish any of them. *sigh* It's likely why most authors say it takes them 10 years or better to write their "first" book, LOLOL.
Thanks for the kind words and encouragment though. To be honest, I'd happily live dirt poor if I could just write, but hubby isn't exactly on the same page with me there, LOL. (pardon the pun) So, we'll see.
Eru, what card? What did I miss? *is embarrassed*

PS: yes, ssssneaking in from work again. This really has to stop, LOL.

Just write for yourself. Don't worry about pleasing others. If you don't like it, then what is the bother, right?

Scribbles, I think that most people are way more critical of their own work and think it is cack. But a writer must have the self sustaining confidence that their work will be liked by someone and even if it isn't, it is cathartic to write what is in your heart or what you feel.
I have three unfinished *books* stories. One is actually about 2/3's complete and then? That door slammed shut so hard and I haven't been able to open it again. When I was writing it I thought it was great, now I read it and I wonder when I started smokin' my socks.
We are all behind you and no matter what, we will support you. Do you know Primella Baggins? She used to post here, now mostly HoF. But she is on her third book and I have bought and read the first two. They are pretty good. More a blend of SciFi/Fantasy but you know that the people on HoF all bought books and then recommended the book on Amazon.
Do you think we would do less for OUR star? *nods* |

Scribbles, judging from what you've written here (RP and Scriptorium), you could have success as a writer. So, go ahead and give it a try, little by little.
Rwhen, that feeling is very familiar, whenever I get to read something that I wrote in my early twenties or so. Apparently, crossing Cinderella stories, soaps, and sci-fi seemed a good idea at that time... |

Oh lord, I nearly spit my lunch all over my screen at that! Smokin' your socks? ROFL!!! And c'mon, it can't be that bad. You're no slouch in the writing department your ownself darlin'.
Thanks for the support everyone, you folks are the best. And y'know, I do write what I love to write about, but the muse tends to be less than forgiving when we get started on something, go like great blazes and then suddenly, real life yanks me away. By the time I get back, she's moved on and most often, has no interest in resuming . . . *sigh*
My "big" project started out as one book, and by the time I was finished outlining the entire story, I realized that I had enough material for a series of about 8 decent sized books . . . So, not having enough time is more of an issue now, LOLOL. Especially since this story takes place in the reign of Henry III, so there's a MOUNTAIN of research that has to go along with every chapter. Which I loooove to do, but it does happen to require that most precious commodity, time.
So, that's one of the reasons early retirement is such a draw for me. Bardy and I used to joke about renting a rose-covered cottage on the south coast of England for a year and just writing. Now, if that isn't heaven on earth, what is? |

Oh come on Rowan, there is room in the world for a Cinderella/Soapish/SciFi novel, I am sure of it. If you write it, they will come!!
Scribbles, I have read in the OOC for RtR about the rose covered cottage on the coast of England for doing nothing but writing. Yes, it does sound heavenly to me as well.....or possibly a villa in Tuscany. Who knows how this ol' world turns and what lay in our future. As the kid said in Angels in the Outfield, "It could happen."
I love that you are working on a period piece during the reign of Henry VIII, but you are so right that the research almost has to be impeccable. Getting people, places, times and things out of sequence will get those nitpicking poohs coming out of the woodwork and to your front door. But I bet it will really be something to read.
I tend to write (not RP) after reading a massive amount of fantasy, one right after another. It is like, THEY can do it, I certainly must be able to. But there is this doorway for me, when it is open, I barely know what I am writing, it just flows. When it is closed, it is then so foreign that I barely recognize my own hand in the work.
I imagine that is what Stephen King does. He just sits when the window opens and out it comes until it closes, but somehow, he manages a book or two out of that time frame. And, his window open much more often. I think I live in the wrong place. |

Kink knows where the latch is, I think.
I'm the same way...I'll have periods of time when I just write like mad, and then nothing (except for my work).

Erm, it's actually Henry the Third, not the Eighth, and you're right. Not only do I have to keep the historical timelines straight, but there's all the other stuff most folks don't even think of, like mentioning pockets or forks before they were invented . . The other drawback is that the earlier the century, the less actual documentation exists to confirm things . . . thank heaven for good historical reference sections at the Library.
rowanberry, you know if the general idea of the story is good, you can always do a little re-writing and polishing. I bet you have some great stuff that you could re-work.
It's funny, we were talking retirement in here, and at supper, hubby mentioned that if we sold our house and bought something smaller in a satellite community near the city, we'd have no mortgage and he could buy a truck and trailer outright and work for himself - leaving me to write and travel with him when the mood struck.
I'm seriously considering this proposition. We've talked about it before, but sort of shelved it when the economy took a dive. But, I think we might re-visit the idea and look into this a little more seriously over the winter.

That sounds like a great life Scribbles. I would love to retire but figure it is not in the cards for me till we can get our bills paid off and get some money behind us. Then perhaps retirement can be discussed. But not in any foreseeable future for me. |

I was just going to say that if you retire somewhere quiet, you'll have everything you need to start your writing. Can I move into the rose-covered cottage? I won't write, I'll just read. I've always dreamed of having a house somewhere with a cozy library where I can just read and read...
Oh and the card I'm waiting for is my citizenship card. The last one got stolen and it takes 8-10 months to get a new one. |

Trivia: the inventor of the fork was a man named John Winthrop who was important both in Massechusetts colony and in England.
I took a course on him, John Winthrop's Worlds, in graduate school. That's all I got out of it.
Seriously.
