Well, another weekend gone . . . they go far too fast if you ask me. This skirt thing I'm sewing for the Mustang Gang's Christmas Run float? Gaaahhhh, just shoot me now . . . it's become an 82 foot nightmare, LOL. And I absolutely have to get it done for next weekend. So we know what
I'm
doing every weeknight this coming week, don't we precious?
Hubby has no less than 3 responses for jobs, but no time off to go for interviews. It's a Catch 22 . . . *sigh* He's talking about going back to long-haul, which will mean he'll be away for longer stretches, but get a week off in between, which would make him happier. It will likely make me happier too, at least during the winter. But come summer that means I have to pick up the slack in the lawnmowing department, which doesn't make me happy at all . . .
Ah well. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens next, LOL.
Have an easy Monday everyone. Especially Calma, who gets to enjoy another well-deserved day off . . .

Scribbles, how are you going to attach the skirt, velcro?
I do most of our yardwork, and we do have a big yard, but that is one reason I no longer work outside of the home. No one can do it all.
Storyteller.. are you getting an unusually large amount of rain or is the rain causing problems because the soil there does not absorb the rain? It seems odd that there are so many problems if the lake has only risen a few millimeters. But I know that places here in the desert (like Tucson, Arizona) the soil bakes almost like clay and so when it rains hard, it runs in rivers and doesn't absorb well. That is the reason they create concrete 'washes' or have dry riverbeds for the run-off.
Kiwi's seem to be a good lot.. if someone's got to take over the world, may as well be them!
*healing thoughts for Ranger* It's hard to keep a dog 'resting' isn't it Tooks? When we had our dog resting from an injury we either had to keep her in a kennel or on a short leash, even in the house.
Frelga .. I hope you and the hubby have a wonderful get-away!
Rowanberry.. I read today that there are more saunas in Finland than there are cars. Is that true? Have you ever heard of Sauna therapy for toxins?

Morning, all...
I woke up at 5 this morning...
So much for sleeping in on vacation. So I read in bed.
Scribbles, good luck with the skirt. I was introduced to a sewing machine in the 8th grade...
We've been bitter enemies ever since.
My girlfriend in High School could sew like a mad woman.
She could go to the remiment box at the local Penny's and an hour later have a new skirt or blouse. She even made the dress I wore at my graduation. Best thing about it, the item looked like it had been bought off the rack. All my attempts looked homemade.
to the rest of you Loons. |

Hope the storm didn't do any serious damage, Storyteller. And, hope that you'll get enough rain without having to stand unusually heavy storms.
Rose, don't know about the saunas vs. cars thing, it might or might not be true. I think that I've heard a mention of the sauna therapy somewhere, but am quite skeptical about its effects. We usually just bathe and relax.
Good luck with the skirt, Scribbles. About the only thing that I can sew is the hems of curtains and turn-ups on trousers. |

ROFL!!!!! Hey, I'm not THAT fat!
How's Ranger doing this week, Tooks? And, um, what's the theme/destination for November? Can we do a vineyard or something? I'm in a wine-tasting mood . . .
Calma, don't you just hate it when that happens? Drat that body clock anyway! But reading in bed is nice too, a very relaxing way to start a day, I must admit. *is moderately jealous* Have a great day!
to the rest of you Loons . . . have a good day/evening.

I've done a LOT of sewing... having started.. I think in the 7th grade. I bought a sewing machine with the money I got for my High School graduation & it's the one I am still using. I've made soooooooo many things with it.. and most of them have been items that there were no patterns for. Civil war ball gowns (NOW you can find patterns for them.. but not 30 years ago!) Costumes for when I used to do Middle Eastern Belidi.. tons of Halloween costumes, banners for churches.. I've even made leather gun cases.
I don't sew that much anymore. Mostly small items & repairs. And a hobbit costume here & there.
Good luck Scribbles.

Hmmm.... November as wine month.
I can deal with that.
Ranger is still confined for a few weeks, but he is doing very well. He uses the right leg most of the time now (rarely favors it). But he won't be allowed full running amuck privileges for another 3 1/2 months.

Scribbles, sounds like a cool project! We expect piccies when you're finished.
And very good news on the job interviews.
That's going to be tough Tooks, but at least he made it through okay and is now on the mend. |

Three and a half MONTHS??!!! Yikey mikey, I'm not sure who'll be crazier at the end of that time, him or you! Good luck to both of you darlin', and I mean that in the very nicest way possible . . .
I'm going to try something daring with the float skirt thingy tonight. I have to cook a pot'o chili for our United Way Chili CookOff on Wednesday, so while it simmers I'll try my idea. If it works, it will save me probably 10-12 hours of work . . .
Rose, I used to sew a ton my ownself, but lately it's mostly confined to "special" projects (like this) and repair jobs, LOL. My mother was an awesome seamstress, she could produce Ladies Suits that looked like they came off the rack of an Italian Boutique. I didn't inherit quite her skill, but it hardly matters since I have no time to sew anyway . . .
Mmmm, can we go
here
?

Well, it's no surprise since Scribbles learned to sew when Canada was still using inches and feet and old habits die hard. Besides, the lady I'm doing this thing for gave me the finished dimensions all in feet, so rather than converting, I'm lazy and I'll just work in inconvenient feet and inches . . .
Oooo Rose, I forgot about that place! Great that you remembered, yes, lets definitely visit there! I could use an afternoon (or six) with my feet up in a lovely Hobbit Garden sipping a few glasses of Old Winyard . . .
Tyg, don't worry. The time will go fast and the next thing you know, you'll be able to sip a wee glass with dinner whilst the little one sleeps.

I'm thinking it's on the scale of the Kentucky Derby in the States.

Mmm wines. I like European white wines, but the best reds come from the New World or the Antipodeans.
Calma, I bet that they cheer at your workplace when they get you back.
Well, today, we had a meeting about the layoffs to be expected. The general idea is that, all who can will be laid off for a week or for the most two weeks in December, so that the work suffers as little as possible. But now, our boss threw the idea that
her
lab could take care of all the microbial samples, while the people in my lab and another one would be laid off. NO TOS VIOLATING WAY will we agree to it! If she tries anything like that, I'm probably not the only one who will send an angry message to
her
boss.
Too bad that there aren't much opportunities to change job right now. |

Rowan, not just 'anybody' can take over doing micro stuff. At least in our medical lab the techs get specialized training.
In the meantime, going to Chile for wine sounds great. We don't even need passports.

Tooks, there are three labs in the house that do microbial analyses: mine, the one in the town where the boss resides, and a third one. The boss just seems to value the one in her town, because she was the first leading expert there after it was founded; the rest of us are just a necessary evil. So, they're fully qualified for the job there, the suggestion just shows the boss's attitude so clearly. |

Rowan, I hope a good compromise can be made. Parts of my work shut down between Christmas and NY but my section is not one of them. Schedules are still needed on a daily basis.
My mum need some cataracts removed from her eyes but that won't be until next year, she's a little worried about this but Dad had his done and was fine. And my little brother needs his hernia fixed so he's off to surgery next monday.
Tooks, I don't want to be arrested in Chile.... |

Well, they didn't exactly cheer when I returned to work, but a few were glad to see me. I learned my supervisor burned the poochies out of the carrots and it took a lot of scrubbing to get it clean. Thankfully, it wasn't me who had to scrub it.
Got my Health Card. Didn't miss any... again.
I've taken that test for too many years and except for the very first time, I didn't miss any questions. It's good for three years which means it expires in Nov. of 2012... Isn't that when the world is supposed to expire as well?

Calma, yup, it's one of the times. The world hasn't ended properly for, like, 10 years or so.
Rowan, I feel your pain. We've two offices too and while people in ours are the ones who have done all the work for ages and the new office can't find their noses with a compass, they think they are the heart and soul.
In other news, my washing machine is on the blink, the motor is really struggling on spin. Well, no biggie, something probably got into it, right? Except access is from the top, which is where the dryer is stacked, and it's too big for hubby and me to move. Plus, I don't mind messing with electric stuff but gas scares me, so I don't exactly want to ask a friend. But to hire a professional would be a hundred bucks just to show up. |

Frelga, is your dryer stacked right on top or on a rack? I've seen those racks where the dryer is on top and the washer is underneath and slides out quite nicely . . . And I hear you on the professional house calls, they can be so unfairly expensive. Hopefully, you can find either a more reasonable rate or a friend who doesn't mind being asked because they know what they're doing?
Calma, congrats on getting your card again . . . Maybe the staff that didn't cheer were simply too numb with exhaustion from having to work with your replacement?
nl, yikes, lots of operations going on in your family . . . sending along warm wishes to you and your brother.
I hope something reasonable can be worked out for your lab too rowanberry. Work stress is no fun, ever.
I have no news worth being called news. Which is probably a good thing . . .

Waves to everyone!
Been one of "those" weeks with the kids home sick with the swine thingy (or so we think) and trying to get work done from home. Blech. Just quickly trying to catch up on some torc stuff......I'll read back soon.
Hope everyone is well! |

there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command.
Very often, that individual is crazy.
