Just a short visit this evening...

Now, there's been a validated case of swine flu at the younger daughter's school. Sad I hope and pray that we manage to avoid it, at least until January.

Wenchie, hope that your kids get well soon. Hug

MoME 2009 is over. Congratulations to the winners!

Rowanberry, hope your daughter is ok! Wash those hands!

The flu has been rampant around here. I thought we had escaped, but I guess not. My daughters friends case has been officially confirmed as H1N1, but we aren't even taking the kids to the doctor, there really is no reason too. They can't do anything for them, kids just have to wait it out.
And mine aren't miserable, just tired.

Sorry about your work situation. Really doesn't sound nice but hopefully they won't cut your lab!

OK....back to work, kind of.

Swine Flu? Again? Didn't the northern parts have this last autumn/winter season? I probably should go get my immunisation shot as they have prepared enough for all of us here. Don't know if its the same strain you guys have. Confused

Rowan, I hope the family can avoid getting sick.

Assistant is off sick today so I am feeling very calm and happy at work today. The noobie is doing well so far in her learnin'. She seems really nice.

Poor Ranger...trapped in Tooks's house til February. There won't be any furniture left! Shocked

Have fun, ST!!!
Bring back lots of pictures to share....

If the flu hits your house, bleach is a great cleaner. Use it on all surfaces that your hands touch. Even the light switches...
We do that at work and it cuts the amount of cases we have almost in half.

Hope all recover quickly and well.

I know absolutely nothing about wines.
Well, except that I don't like the taste of it. <shrugs>
But I'll tag along, who knows I might learn something.

Off to work now.
Later.

Calma.....so you are back at work? So am I right now....but just for the morning.

They are changing all the computer stuff today, so they want us in the office to do our timesheets (guess they are nervous we will do it wrong....since our time is how they make their money i guess I understand)

Oldtoby, I'm with you....this flu thing is very overhyped. I just had a woman at work get very "in my face" about why I hadn't taken my kids to the doctor (they don't want us there!!). She said I needed to get the kids diagnosed....but I told her what has been told to me. Any flu that is around right now is the H1N1 strain, so if someone has the flu, it's the swine flu. Fortunately, my kids are doing ok.

And wines....I used to know about. But, now, the less I know the better. Wink

Storyteller....have a great time in Australia!!!

OK....they are emailing me to get my timesheet started....here goes nothing....

It's the FLU, get a grip! (I'm just saying that in general, not to anyone here!)

Thousands die each year from the "normal" flu and we barely hear about it. I'm with Toby...

DON'T PANIC!!! As long as you have your bathrobe and your towel, you'll be fine!

Meanwhile, hand sanitizer and soap are also your friends.

Yay Storyteller! Enjoy your trip! Cool

NL, it's great to hear that the new worker seems OK. Smile

Poor Ranger. Hope he won't get all nuts by February.

We've got the proper first snow. It started snowing yesterday evening, and it's been going on today. That means, tomorrow I'll have to take public transport to dance class because we won't get the winter tyres changed until Saturday morning. So, an hour less TORC time tomorrow...

That's true, it's not much more dangerous than the normal flu, the media just doesn't hype it up as much.

However, I bite my nails a lot, so that puts me at high-risk. I should probably get a shot or something next week.

Wonder if there's a shot for biting nails? Razz

I used to do that all the time until I made the connection between stomach pains and biting my nails. Don't ask me why...I'm just strange that way! Big Grin

There is some clear stuff that you can paint on your nails which has a very bitter taste that has been shown to help people stop biting their nails. It's usually readily available. There is also a mouth guard you can wear, although you probably wouldn't want to do that in public. Otherwise, they say to try to replace the nail biting habit with something more constructive (what would that be? Spinning quarters between your fingers?). Thinking about how much bacteria (and icky stuff like pinworms) can be under your nails might be another thing to discourage nail biting.

Wenchie.. don't you hate it when other people get in YOUR business (as in.. it's not THEIR business). It's not as if you are bringing the kids to work with you.

Swine flu is almost dead and buried here, to say that the media have stopped headlining every new case...we don't hear anything about it at all anymore, people still get it, just like Influenza A, but they get treated and go home and get on with their lives....we Kiwi's don't panic about anything, we're sooo laid back Big Grin

I've found out today that I get free insurance for my trip from my credit card company AND a free hotel room in Seoul courtesy of Korean Airlines! And it's the airport hotel, so no cashing out on the taxi either.

I also went gift-shopping today and hit upon a gold mine of a shop selling hand-made, silver-coated Jerusalem-themed stuff that looks absolutely stunning. I'd show photos but the things were gift-wrapped on the spot. Then I've wandered into the Karmel market and ended up with some yummy laffa bread that I wanted to buy and a black vest that was forced upon me despite my valiant attempts to get away,

We didn't panic with the foot and mouth scare that happened in England etc a few years ago and we didn't panic with the horse flu epidemic in Aussie last year....we just quietly close our borders Wink

Soooooo tired . . . another gosh awful stressful week . . . quick drive by though Big Grin

Storyteller, don't you just hate those black vests that leap out at you from shadowy markets and just WON'T let go? LOLOL, sounds like your trip is all falling into place perfectly. Travel safe and have a grand time! Of course, you know we'll expect links to piccies . . . Wink

nl, hope you get a good night's rest tonight with either pleasant dreams or none at all. Wink Big Grin

Calma, I just saw the news about Fort Hood . . . unbelievable. My prayers go out for the families and friends of the victims. Sad

rowanberry, hopefully the snow won't stick around, or are your days getting cold enough now that it will?

We were just talking about the H1N1 flu at work today and how the media has hyped this to epic proportions. As long as you do the important things, like wash your hands often, don't touch your face if you've touched any public surface and keep yourself healthy, you should be able to either avoid catching it at all, or cope with it if you do. I was reading that even if you get the bug, keeping it from proliferating is another way to combat getting sick. I can see we'll be going through a bit more Listerine this winter. Wink

Have a great evening peoples. Speaking of staying healthy, I'm gonna drag my sorry tired butt to bed . . . Wink

Oh yes. The traders at the local markets can be quite persistent. And grabby. They'll catch you by your sleeve and unleash a torrent of verbosity that's hard to withstand, and they won't let go until you buy something.

They think nothing about lying to you about the quality of their wares, too. I was checking out a pair of Jordanian-made shoes which the trader described as "real leather", and they obviously were not, which I pointed out. The trader thought I could read the label, and was completely stunned: "But you're from Russia! How can you read Arabic?" I gave him a mysterious look and went on... walking right into the trap of the vest-seller.
