OK, it's 1984.

The longest game in Major League Baseball history begins at 7:30 PM on May 8 between the Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers. It's played over the course of two days, lasts 25 innings, and goes over 8 hours.

1984 ends on December 31, and Big Brother has not appeared. Or has he? |

Many books have been written on that subject.
I think, in reality, his name is Jon...
Rose: yes, Lee was a very complicated man. There's a good chance the south could have done better battle-wise if he'd been more flexible. But in the end, the south just didn't have the resources for a protracted war.

It is now 1985.
The charity single "We are the World" is recorded.
New Coke is introduced, which has to be the corporate disaster of the century. I tried it. It tasted like RC, only gone flat. It sparks the Cola Wars.
The comic strip Calvin and Hobbes is introduced.
The Kansas City Royals come from behind to win the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. It is the last time that team is any good, as they become a joke ever after. |

Good day my PCEheads!!!
1985 was the year I got my pilots license!! Also the year I got engaged, what was I thinking? Also the year that Class Action, the musical group I would perform with for 15 years was formed and did their first gig.
How is everyone today? Hope everyone had grand weekends.
I have to finish up MoME this week, post up in the Autumn festival a special piece for Arwen. Get up a post in TE and oh yeah, WORK.
Hope that everyone is well.

IMO the C.S.A never had much of a chance for anything except a slim, slim possibility of British intervention. Even that might not have mattered. The C.S.A had no navy (compared the the U.S Navy), not much naval tradition (compared to New England/New York), little machinery (they couldn't manufacture their own steam turbines for warships for example), not many armories/foundries for cannon/rifles-I think their were 1-2 in Virginia. (Harpers Ferry I think........The USA had Springfield......Cold springs (I think the name is, near West Point, Spencer.....) The C.S.A could get some Enfields or Austrian Lorenz rifles through the blockade, but not many.
Not enough people, not enough railroads.......food........just too many disadvantages. They had better cavalry for a while, and more of a martial tradition due to a basic obsessive fear of slave revolt.
That being said, Lee probably did as well as anyone could have hoped one could do in that situation, though it is unlikely they could have for example, taken Washington D.C, even if they won Gettysburg. However, their have been leaders who did more with worse odds (King Phillip/Metacom, Pontiac, Castro/Che Guevara, Washington) |

Attention, all PCEheads.
I am going to ask that we suspend posting on this thread until some clarification is made on whether this is strictly a spam thread or if it is a viable thread.
There are many many threads to post in on TORC, let us use one of those until such time as I have clarification.
Thanks friends. Regardless of the final outcome, this has been a home to a good handful of friends and we will find a new home to share our lives on.
Again, please do not post in this thread for now.
Thank you. |

CR, it is all good. No worries. There are so many threads to post on TORC. If there is a reason that we should not post under this thread, we can always make a new home for those of us who gather here regularly to share life's daily events.
It isn't the first thread I have had that, for one reason or another, should not have been made in the first place.
Let us leave it up to the powers that be and go from there.
One thing that I don't want to do is to use this as a debate on the thread. The decision will be final and we will move forward. Easy enough. |

Good Morning PCE heads and welcome to November!! One of my favorite months to be sure.
Hope you all had a great weekend.
I think we can move forward with posting on thread, if that changes in the future, I will let you know. I ask that we just go forward without comment please.
So now, how did our happy Halloweeners do? Loads of candy or any good parties? I slept, as usual, through the whole thing, but left out candy for the kids, about half was taken.
Hope yours was fun.

Not that dusty.
I think I had two *groups* come to my door. So I don't know the number. I was under the covers. I left candy outside. That is what I do every year. No bother, no muss and the kids get the candy. |

This year, I actually saw some trick-and-treaters here for the first time. They didn't come to our house, but moved in our friends' neighbourhood on Saturday evening, when the hubby and I were going to get them to the rockabilly party. At that time, the kids had already finished their round, probably just at people they knew, and were going home.
In the city, though, quite a lot of young adults had dressed for Halloween for parties in some clubs, and there were a couple of Rockabilly witches at the party we were in. |

You left candy out on your porch and it wasn't all gone?? Wow, you've got honest kids in your neighborhood. I know some kids who would've just taken the entire thing..
I went to a Come As Your Research classics party; some pretty hilarious costumes, I must say; one of the other first year students, who doesn't have a specific area of research yet, came as Frodo, which I thought was pretty awesome. We also found out that he hasn't seen The Princess Bride and now have plans to force him to watch it. There was also mulled cider, a tray of flaming cupcakes (!) and a pretty good crowd of trick-or-treaters.
In other news, I believe my housemates are having cable installed... hope they don't expect me to pay for it!
And in more other news, have I mentioned lately how much I hate writing papers? Augh. *Dies*
Happy Monday!
Edit: Cross-posted with Rowan. Will I be flogged if I ask what Rockabilly is? |

Hey Rowan, seems like the younger crowd gets into it a bit there. Fun.
Rockabilly was like what Elvis did, IN THE DAY. A blend of country and rock. At least that is the old description, there might be a newer one that I am unaware of.
Sounds like a good time was had Sil. Did you go as a Latin lover or a Greek statue? |

*gets the whip from the closet*
Like Rwhen said, rockabilly is a music style from the fifties, music like
Buddy Holly
or
early Elvis
. Especially the hubby unit is fond of it. |

I
Hate
my school
and my insurance company
exhibit 1A why health care should be free, I am deciding not to spend $100 co-pay I literally do not have to get a boil lanced and get antibiotics. The school "cut back" and doesn't offer a free clinic anymore............so I have to go to the hospital, which isn't happening, because I can't afford it. Great. |

Lewie, the healthcare situation is a mess. I don't know what the answer is but SOMETHING needs to be done. We've got insurance but the last several bills we've gotten seem awfully high, so I'm going to have to take some time to sit down & look everything over & make sure it's all correctly processed. It's a mess.
We had no trick or treaters. Our neighborhood must be getting 'older'. Back in the day when my daughter was young we used to get about 40. Last year we had 14. There was a year or two where I left the candy bucket on the porch and we had no problems.

We are having to change our health care policies. Ryan's now wants to charge an extra $50 a month because I can get insurance through my work but I am on his policy. If we change to mine the same thing. But it appears that mine will be much cheaper anyways and have much better coverage for us. So in that case it will be smarter. His is upping all the co-pays and deductibles. Why did someone have to go and mess with the health insurance mess we were already in? I mean now it is getting worse for everyone!
I know there needs to be a responsible answer to the health care issue without tearing the system all apart, at least I would think so.
Good luck Lewie hon. You do need to get that lanced but if you can not then try hot packing it with epsom salt packs. A hot wet washcloth soaked in hot epsom salt water and applied several times a day. See if that helps! |

Vana, I miss Abby.
Well...I'm going out to the movies this weekend. Now, that wouldn't normally be a big surprise but...I am going to the movies with a guy. Now, before y'all get really excited, this isn't a big deal...it's a good friend of mine from church.
I just wanted to see if I could get everyone's attention.

YAY...Vanadarlin'!! Sorry about your insurance woe's. I still have to GET insurance at all. Which I have been waiting for the restaurant to open and get in on their policy. Good luck.
Same with you Lewie, good luck. As Rose says, insurance is a mess right now.
Have fun Iris. Moobies = a very good Martha Stewart thing.
Rose friend, have been missing on you. Glad you are back from the little trips up and back to get your daughter to and from school. What is it looking like there? Had a first full frost this morning, meaning had to scrape windshield. And it begins. |

I always seem to just miss you Vana.
Hooray the thread is open again! I didn't even notice when I opened it, then I remembered and did a double take.
You guys got like no trick or treaters. At one point I had to pretend I wasn't home, they just kept coming and I was staying home to study for this upcoming week. |
