Tea Lovers of TORC Talk

Hoping this thread might take off, or maybe I am the only one here who loves tea? Can't be.......especially with all the Brits here Smile A place to talk about tea, maybe while we are brewing some up or heating the kettle. Or a place maybe just to talk about everything else!

What are your favorite kinds of tea? Where do you get it? Have any prized teapots/sets?

I'll admit, I'm a new convert to tea (the last year or so) but I've taken to drinking it at least once a day, usually more. I don't have any loose leaf on campus, but I am buying some and a good pot when I graduate, so I'm stuck to bags for now. I'm usually a straight, unsweetened, unflavored green tea drinker, but I've recently tried (and loved) Red tea, and Chamomile, especially after dinner. I like the taste of black teas, but I really can't do caffeine very well.[/img]

Rooibos Vanilla. That's my tea of choice, and I drink at least one pot every evening and often, I'll brew a cuppa at work in the afternoon.

I'm another unblemished tea drinker. I used to drink regular Black Indian tea with milk and sugar, but now, only clear tea for me.

The thing I love the most about the Rooibos Vanilla tea is that you can leave the bags in the pot the entire time you are drinking the tea. It never gets bitter. Plus, it's naturally caffiene free and is loaded with anti-oxidents.

What's not to love?

OHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh tea! Yum! I Heart LOVE tea!

I used to drink tea, then switched to coffee, 'cause I make it for my hubby.. but it has waaaay too much caffeine for me so I went back to tea. I still have to watch my caffeine intake, but tea is not as bad as coffee.

I am picky about tea. I don't like just any old tea. For as big as Starbucks is.. I do not like most of the teas they offer (which I is the Tazo brand.) I cannot believe they don't offer any brewed tea. I have found that the teas I enjoy the most are from Harney & Sons. I usually order it online and buy in bulk to get a better price but they do carry it in some nicer grocery stores.

If you like a strong, flavorful tea with NO bitterness, Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon spice is to-die-for. It is naturally slightly sweet (with no sugar) made from black tea, cinnamon, orange & clove. When people try it they cannot believe it is made without sweeteners. They also make a 'green' variety and a decaf. variety (I've tried both). It's good hot or cold. This tea is sooo popular, it has it's own facebook page. No lie.

I have also ordered a few of their other teas. Japanese Sencha green tea, for one. I also often buy an organic green tea (Bigalow brand) from Sam's club (in tea bags) that I brew in a pot, I add a tiny bit of honey and some lemon juice. Citrus juice (vitamin C) increases the antioxidants I think.. five-fold as this article explains. I make a large batch of this and drink it hot or cold all day long & send it along in hubby's lunch instead of soda. For some reason green tea you buy already made in the bottle does not have the healthful anti-cancer antioxidants.

Later in the day I try not to drink any caffeine so then I will use only decaf. One of the decaf green teas I like off the shelf in bags is Celestial Seasonings Green Tea with white tea. It has a very smooth taste.

Lewie, if you'd like to try any loose leaf tea you can always get a tea ball or even an ordinary small fine mesh strainer, put in a bit of tea (it will swell, so, don't fill it!) and let it sit in the mug/pot of hot water. They even make special strainer/filter made to fit into a cup, like this one

Scribbles.. I'll have to try that Vanilla sometime. Vanilla can be very mild & soothing, if it is a natural vanilla.. artificial vanilla sometimes gives me a headache.

Ooo, I love tea. I found a box of Ceylon green tea at a Russian grocery here, and it's amazing, strong and flavorful like black tea but without the bitterness. You can see the bits of leaves, none of that dust you get in the bags.

For black tea on a budget, I find Trader Joe's English Breakfast is surprisingly robust and flavorful.

For the more extreme stuff, I've tried some lapsang souchong, the smoked tea. I like it but it has to be brewed just so, or it tastes like charred wood.

Hubby gave me a tea brewing system for my birthday. It's a large mug, a strainer that fits into it for the leaves, and a lid that turns into a little saucer to put the strainer on when it's done. I Heart it.

I have one of those too! Mine is probably the larger size 'cause I often use it in a pot, but I could use it in a large cup. I love it! Big Grin

O rly? Shows how quoting improperly can be misinterpreted. Big Grin

But a great idea for a thread! Tea is amazing!

I used to only drink tea with honey in it, never sugar. Then on a flight once I had some english black tea with milk, and I've been loving it ever since. My friend makes a really tasty spicy black tea with lots of raw ingredients.

Just like Scribbles, Rooibos is do die for. You don't need any sweeteners, and I never noticed before, but it's true, you can just leave the bag in!

And lastly, I like tea that I make from plant I pick around my grandparents' cottage.

I guess it depends on my mood, whether I need energy, want to relax, or am eating chinese/japanese food (Green tea ftw)

Loose leaf/pot.. lol. I didn't pick up on that in the first reading!

When we were in Scotland, Glasgow specifically, my daughter & I had 'high tea' at the Tea Room designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It was one of the highlights of our trip. I've always wanted to go there. They had a marvelous house tea.. I'm not sure what it was, but it tasted good with milk. I don't think most teas taste good with milk.

The English breakfast teas we had in the U.K. were very nice as well. The coffee drinkers in our group were a bit dismayed because it was a bit harder to get a pot of coffee, but hey, *I* was loving it! Big Grin

LOL at the pot thing Big Grin

Silverscribe----I'll have to try that, I quite like plain Rooibos, so that sound very good as well.

When eating asian food, oolong tea is what I like. Supposedly aids digestion.

I'm a rather late convert to tea, maybe because there simply weren't any good teas available in my childhood and youth, and I still prefer a mug of coffee to get me awake in the morning. But, tea is a good choice if I just want to have something warm to drink, especially in the evening.

I prefer green tea over black, and Rooibos is a new favourite, just because it doesn't get bitter, like Scribbles said. And, herbal teas are a story of their own; I have a few sorts in my cabinet.

And, I never put milk or any sweeteners in my tea.

If anyone would like to try a favorite or two of mine I could probably send a little in an envelope.

Rowan, I never had tea with milk until I went to the U.K. Certain teas I had there tasted good with milk.. and I've never liked it before. BUT.. they say that it's not good for a person to put milk in tea anyway.. it takes away the anti-oxidant properties.

Rosie, that might get caught if you send it across borders. I think there's some regulation about transporting plants and such.

But that's a cool idea anyways! Sending teabags in the mail? I never thought of that but it would totally work. Big Grin

I am a tea drinker myself...

Long story short, after I finished my one-year diet back in the days, I was not able to go back to chocolate milk (haven't been able to eat chocolate ever since those days when I think of it Laughing) and stuck with tea.

I have my regulars english breakfast tea, earl grey and my darling and I discovered Revolution Tea in Montreal. http://www.revolutiontea.com/
Leaves, not crushed remnants; my personal favourites are
- pear: white tea, very strong not to take in the late afternoon, to drink in the morning, very good wake-up tea
- peach & ginger: great for an afternoon tea when back from the office (like right now Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin)
- lavender tea: amazing for your after dinner cup of tea. Used to have that at the restaurant where we discovered it.

And like Rowan herbal tea is another tale entirely Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin love those too.

As for me, no milk, no sweeteners you just have to know your timing for infusion Razz Razz Razz
Except when it comes to Mint tea, it has to be the Morocco way: green tea, mint leaves and sugar Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin. Not to take after 4pm if I may advise Laughing Laughing

Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know.

I achieved tea in adulthood; it was a conscious effort, in stages, because I had a bad experience with tea as a child once when I was sick. But I learned to like it, especially Earl Grey, darjeeling, and the kind you get in Chinese restaurants. I usually sweeten it (except for the restaurant tea), but NEVER put milk in it (the childhood trauma) except for chai! Sometimes I use sugar, sometimes honey.

I love chai also, and rooibos vanilla (where has that stuff been all my life?). Twinings puts out a black tea with vanilla and one with black currant, but it's very hard to find; hubby, who likes tea even better than I do, has been searching for months because our original purchase has nearly run out.

Herbal teas (tisanes, rather): I don't think I've ever met one I didn't like! Hubby teases me about the many varieties I have cluttering up the kitchen and dining room!

Some friends from church are very big into Harney; they bring some regularly to the monthly fellowship meeting. Very good stuff!

Lavender tea?? Now my curiosity's up!

The brand of Rooibos Vanilla I buy is Messmer but since the ingredients just say "rooibos tea, flavourings" I can't say whether it contains natural vanilla or not. I like it better than the Celestial Seasonings Madascar Vanilla Rooibos which is much sweeter and has a real butterscotch finish to it (but does list its ingredients as "natural French Vanilla and vanilla bean). My hubby however, prefers the Celestial Seasonings brand, so we always have both in the house. Smile Along with no less than 14 other varieties of tea, LOLOL. Yeah, I looooooves my tea. Big Grin

Eru and I have talked about this, he's talking about Camomile. It grows here too, in fact the field behind our house is always seeding my yard in the spring LOL. I pull it and dry it, it's best early in the season. Wink

There's another Rooibos that's very tasty - Tiramisu. Seriously. It's lovely with scones, LOL. Big Grin

And did you just add vanilla extract to the plain Rooibos or did you buy an actual 'vanilla' variety. I know different brands are stronger or weaker in the vanilla department, so try a few. Wink

I don't like decaf teas of any sort, since I read somewhere that some of the decaf processes involve formaldehyde . . . which is not something I want to be drinking, LOL. And since there are so many herbal teas that are naturally without caffiene, I don't see the need to buy decaf tea in any shape or form.

Word to the wise though. Be aware that Green Tea, in it's natural form, is NOT caffiene free. And though it's been touted as a huge anti-oxident tea, the natural Rooibos actually is better in that department . . . Wink

I found this interesting bit on decaffeinating tea from Dr. Andrew Weil's website .

Dr.Weil said:

As an alternative to buying decaf tea, you can remove most of the caffeine on your own with a very simple process recommended by In Pursuit of Tea (www.inpursuitoftea.com), a company I respect. All you have to do is steep the tea for 45 seconds in hot water and then pour off the liquid. Next, add more hot water and steep as you normally would to brew a cup of that tea. Up to 80 percent of the caffeine is released in the first infusion of water so only minimal amounts will remain when you add water the second time. This method eliminates very little of the tea's flavor and aroma.
This sounds like the 'CO2' process.

I was curious about the decaffeination process used in the brands I drink most often (but I don't usually drink decaf) so I looked them up:

Celestial Seasonings:
Our Green, Black, and White teas are decaffeinated using Carbon Dioxide (CO2), the same compound that plants breathe in daily. This process is also known as effervescent decaffeination.

Bigelow teas:
We purchase a premium grade green tea for decaffeination, and we are currently using a CO2 decaffeination process which retains most of the polyphenols.

I couldn't find anything on the Harney & Sons website so I wrote & asked them. I'll let you know what their response is.

Rooibos isn't 'tea' in the strict sense of the word (but certainly qualifies in the larger scope of this discussion) because it doesn't come from the 'tea' plant Camellia sinensis. It comes from Aspalanthus linearis, which grows wild in South Africa. Rooibos is Dutch for 'red bush'. It is naturally caffeine free and has healthy benefits like other herbal 'teas', more properly called 'tisanes'. I am trying to recall what I thought of Rooibos because I'm sure I've had it at some point... I wonder if I didn't care for it? I honestly can't remember. I am not a big fan of most herbal tisanes although I've had a few that were good.

I have had rose hip 'tea' which I believe has more vitamin C than anything else on the planet, but I didn't care for the taste much. It's OK but not something I'd enjoy drinking regularly.

Eru.. I'll also ask the post office about shipping tea through the mail. I buy tea all the time through the mail.. and because it's processed, I would think it's classified more as a food than a plant. But I will ask & let you know.

I would think tea is food rather than plant. It's not like you can plant tea leaves. Wink

Rooibos, to me, tastes exactly like rose hip tea. To the point where I was wondering if it's the same, or at least related plant.

Hmm.. interesting. I do think Rose hip tea is something separate.. made from Rose hips.. which are incredibly high in Vitamin C, about 1700–2000 mg per 100 g in the dried fruit. Rose hips can be found anywhere Roses are grown, but Rooibos is only found in South Africa.. and I think they use the leaves of the plant. It would be interesting to compare the two.

I wonder if the Rooibos is something I've had at the local coffee house (I don't care for any of the teas I've tried there.. I think they carry Rishi brand)

I began drinking tea as a small child. My mother always made tea for dinner. It was Tea Rose black tea with saccharin. Then I fell in love with orange pekoe tea with lemon. I love lemon in my tea no matter the brand or where you get it.

I love Herbal teas as well. Chamomile and sleepy time teas.

My favorite tea for the last few years was Green tea with Citrus and Chai tea with milk and stevia.

I also keep many different brands and flavors here in my kitchen. Ryan loves tea as well and we love to make sun tea in the summer. Big Grin

Eru and I have talked about this, he's talking about Camomile.

Actually, I wish I could pull up all the names. One sunday I remember we picked around 10 or so different kinds of plants to dry for tea. Big Grin

I'm glad we have this thread, I just finished an English paper, so I'm going to make myself some tea. Thumb's Up

Anywhere Roses are grown eh? So if I search around your house, and steep some of your hips (hopefully without too much blood) Rosie, it'd make for great tea? Laughing

What kinds of tea put you to sleep? This would be good to know.

Chamomile is good for putting you to sleep (relaxing)! Big Grin

And erm.. my hips would not make good tea!!! (maybe salsa, but not tea!) Razz But I've seen 'hips' on rose plants when the flowers mature. Wink

Cool. If you can cobble up a list, that would be great. I'm pretty sure a few of those grow around here too. Smile

I know Rooibos is not "tea" but a tisane, LOL. I guess I tend to forget it's an herbal tea because it looks and tastes so much like a mild, regular tea. Wink

I had heard that about Rosehips and Vitamin C too, but like Rose, I didn't care for the taste. Even a dab of honey couldn't hide the slight 'bite', but then again, maybe like most things, different rosehips produce differently flavoured tea. I have a beeeyooootiful wild rose bush in my garden that is currently covered with huge hips, I should try drying some and making my own rosehip tea . . . .

I found a new herbal tea that is very, very nice and another one for easing one into a relaxed state for sleep. It's from Celestial Seasonings and it's called "Tension Tamer." I don't like cinnamon in drinks so I'm not a Chai Tea fan, but this tea has such a mild hint that it's actually pleasant to me.

And thanks for the very good information about de-caffienating processes too. I was pretty sure the practice had changed many years ago, but y'all know how bad my memory is, LOL. Cool tip with the 45-second self-decaffing too, how much easier could it be? Smile I'll have to try that with my favourite Murchie's Gold-Tipped Assam . . . I don't drink it much mostly because it's a caffiene heavy-hitter . . . Wink

Vana, sun-tea is a big favourite at my house in the summer too. Our south-facing deck is ideal for brewing it, I have a few of those old-fashioned glass quart milk bottles and they do a fab job. Smile

By the way Lewie... I've always meant to say I love the picture you have at the beginning of this thread. I LOVE that tea pot & the cup! It reminds me of a Japanese restaurant we went to recently.

Scribbles, I am sure you could somehow use those hips! Wink I think native peoples used them a great deal. I read something on them recently.. can't remember where.

I'm not a big fan of chai either. The traditional way of making it (with cream and lots of sugar) tastes OK but I can only handle a sip or two..it's way too rich & sweet for me. When it's made without the cream & sugar.. I find the taste of the nutmeg and ginger overwhelming.. and I don't care for that, although I like those spices in baked goods. I guess it just tastes a bit too much like an herbal tisane (tea) and I have only found a few of those that I like. Celestial Seasonings makes an Apple Cinnamon that I like, nice & relaxing for evening.. but I do like cinnamon.

I only drink Chai Tea in the winter. I think it is a bit expensive but I prefer the Oregon Chai to any other too.

I have to watch the caffeine as well since I do not normal ingest caffeine if I can help it. I become too wired to sleep or slow down and I do not like that feeling.

I find that tea pot and cup at the beginning of this thread very nice indeed. Wish I had one like it. But then I do not brew tea very often since I don't seem to be home to enjoy it like I wish. But I enjoy unique and beautiful pottery.

I love the picture in the first post as well. It reminds me of my very dear friend Laura, who's entire kitchen is filled with absolutely beautiful, earthy pottery like that, all made by a local Alberta Artist.

I brew my nightly pot of Rooibos Vanilla in an old Corning Ware teapot that's permanently nestled in a double layer of crocheted tea cosy. I bought a nice, big square "George" tea service for hubby, since we drink different teas. LOL, all the information that you just don't care about folks . . . Wink

Tea, hmmmmm. Yes, just the ticket after a big potluck-office-lunch . . .

I like herbal teas, the few I've had anyway. Making my own sounds both adventurous, daunting, but probably much easier then I'd think Wink

Today I had some plain green tea in the mid-morning. Looooongggg day though, with rain, cold, LOTS to think about (had a big discussion with my professor/adviser about what the heck I am gonna do after college) So I think I'll finish off the day (after more studying/reading) with a rooibos or two.

I am thinking of maybe treating myself to a nice teapot with a basket of some sort in it for the leaves. There is a chain store near me that sells some nice looking ones. http://teavana.com/ If there were any mom&pop shops in my area for such things, i'd spend there, but not really an option.

I'm specifically thinking of buying this one.

They have a Teavana at the mall in Milwaukee. I LOVE to look there (and sample) but I don't usually buy because they are SO darned expensive. I love the pot Lewie!

You can make an herbal tea from a lot of things.. depending upon how adventurous you are and your tastes. Mint, Lemon balm, Pine needles, rose hips, some people like barley 'tea', dandelion greens (make sure they've not been sprayed with pesticides) chamomile, etc..

I have a glass teapot that came in a gift set with a box of flower teas, the kind that go in as a gray bundle and unwrap to a flower. They taste so so, to me, but i love watching them unfold with little twitches and streams of pinhead-sized bubbles. Pretty and a bit creepy.
