Figgs has taken to sitting in the bathroom and yowling. I don't know why he prefers the bathroom, I guess he likes the echo or something. Anyway, it's annoying, so I usually shut the door so he can't get in.
Yesterday I had to leave around one, and since I'm not sure if the lady upstairs can hear his caterwauling (great word that---perfectly describes it) I wanted to make sure the bathroom door was closed. So I ran back inside, but I didn't quite close the door that leads from my apartment to the outside hallway. After making sure the bathroom door was closed, I left without taking a head count of cats.
That night when I got home I was late, so I immediately opened cat food to give the brats their dinner. They all came running into the kitchen. Except Nim.
I went looking for her, but couldn't find her anywhere. She wasn't under anything, or on top of anyplace I looked. Then I started to worry that she had slipped out into the hallway when I had left earlier, so I took a flashlight and went looking out there. Both the boiler room and laundry room are accessible from the hallway, and I was looking under and and behind every possible place she might have gotten into. No luck.
THEN I began to worry that she might have ran outside when someone came in. When I thought she might be lost outside in the rain and the dark, I started to cry. I was going to go out and look for her though, as fruitless as that might have been, but I decided to give the apartment one more good going over-----and there she was! I didn't find her so much as she decided to come out of her hiding place. I use the small, spare bedroom for storage, and I have metal shelving in there where I stack plastic boxes. She had somehow managed to get to the very top shelf, and was behind one of the boxes.
I was so relieved, I just hugged and petted her. She just looked at me as if to say: "I was just having a nap. What's the big deal?"
So that was my Halloween scare. And if I ever leave then have to go back into my apartment for ANYTHING I WILL NOT leave the door open. And I will count noses before I go.
