Oh well, HBO is now in uncharted territory. I just wonder how much will be true to when the next book comes out.

Damn you GRRM!

Well, the TV show and the book have diverged, so I'm not sure we can really count it as spoilers any more.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me at this point if Winds of Winter actually never comes out. My advice to anyone picking up the series is basically to read up to Storm of Swords, and make up your own ending.

:x Bite your tongue, sir!

What makes me upset is that there's not a terribly small chance that you're right. Or, just as bad, the books start taking after the tv show instead of being their own, original thing.

*sigh*

I really want GRRM to finish the series. Especially since I'm just not a fan of the show at all.

Yeah, the show is just subsisting on nihilistic shock value at this point. It doesn't help that the writers are evidently in love with Ramsay Bolton, who is basically a villainous Mary Sue.

As far as the show goes, I'm cheering for the White Walkers.

I am now convinced that GRRM's new book will consist of:

redrum. redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum

redrum. redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum

redrum. redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum, redrum

Mrs. H played me a nice little ditty that somebody put out a while ago comparing GRRM's writing speed to the onrush of a glacier. I'll have to go dig up the title of it . . .

Martin hasn't even been giving updates. The last information we had was that he had 200 pages shunted out of A Dance With Dragons... but that was five years ago.

Maybe GRR Martin is letting the screenwriters finish the series for him?

Sigh... just realized it's been 8 years since A Dance with Dragons.

I guess I can only look forward now to Brandon Sanderson finishing this series for the late George R. R. Martin in a decade or so.

I have to agree that it is doubtful we will see the series finished by GRRM. It has been WAY too long sing ADwD's. I have read the excerpts as most have, but those were posted years ago as well. *sigh*

I have hope. My hope is that once he finishes Winds of Winter, he will hopefully have many of the loopholes figured out and the last book (A Dream of Spring) will be easier/quicker to write. I think George has a pretty good idea of how things end.. it's all that sticky stuff just before the wrap up that (I would think) is most difficult.

I wish I still had that optimism. Many think that the way the show was done caused issues with what he intended to write. I don't know if that is true, but my concern is more for his age and his relative health. Like you wrote finishing the books is quite an undertaking even with all he might have done for WoW. I am going to stay hopeful with you as I really want to read his version rather than only having the show in my head. Maybe next year. I do know when the publishers get the final for WoW they will announce it and then we would have an actual date for release. There have been a few false alarms already and that was over three years ago now. COME ON GEORGE!!

New Zealand made an offer to allow George to finish WOW: https://youtu.be/H45DN1ml4iA (they have such a sense of humor!)
To which George replied:
George RR Martin wrote:As for finishing my book… I fear that New Zealand would distract me entirely too much. Best leave me here in Westeros for the nonce. But I tell you this — if I don’t have The Winds of Winter in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done. Just so long as the acrid fumes do not screw up my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.

WorldCon is in August 2020 and George is Toastmaster for the Hugo awards.

If he's not finished by then, the people of New Zealand know what they have to do. :P

Oh, and I'm not so sure George will be greatly influenced by what Dan & Dave chose to do in the show. Maybe minor things, but overall he has said he will not allow that to influence him. He is telling a much different story with characters and storylines that never made it into the show.

*rolls on the floor laughing* That might do the trick. Lock him up. He has always been very involved with the Hugo's, going way back. Not surprised that he is Toastmaster this coming year. I wonder if that might actually put some steam in his step for finishing....who knows. I doubt the very kind people of NZ would do such a dastardly thing, but I LOVE the idea. :D

Might be true there, Rose. But he did write on his blog several years ago that he had written himself into a corner with one major character because of how the show resolved their end......I am no writer and have no clue where the last two books are going to go, but I sure want to read them.
