What am I doing here?

Pull out your pack and head on down to the Prancing Pony for some great Role Playing (try to stay in character)!

I'v been playing with this idea for a while now, and ain't sure if it'll work. so don't be disapointed. I'v been pondering what would happen if a modern teenager was flung back through time and space to middle earth? along with a bunch of other teens from different countries and time periods (no less than 30 years apart, must be from differnt cultures/religions). How would the residents of middle earth react? that is what this thread is for. to expeiriment with the idea. so, here goes...

"I don't know how I got here. All I know is: I don't like it!" Carrie stares around. She's in some sort of creepy forest. There are half a dozen armed weirdos standing here talk'n jiberish, looking very not nice. "Okay, this is seriously messed up. Who are you, and where am I?"

(OOC: Just wanted to get this straight - we can't all be from the same time period? So if I was to play as a 15-yr old English girl I couldn't play from where I am now? In which case I'll put myself in as coming from the middle of WW2 - from the blitz in London, if no-one minds)

"Look, who are you guys? And why are you wearing that weird get-up? And with your long hair... are you neo-hippies or somethin'?" The girl had been trying to talk to the people surrounding her for nearly ten minutes, with no success. It was almost like they were from another planet, she thought. The bows that they were carrying were no joke, however, and right now they were strung and loaded, and pointing at her. "All right, all right! I'll do what you want, just don't get any ideas and keep those away from me, okay?"

"Um... live long and prosper..... I come in peace.... oh shnit...." Carrie had tried every greeting she could remember. She sighed, and searched her brain one last time. and she had it. "Elen sila lumemn omentilevo" The Elves lowered their weapons and smiled. The lead Elf stepped forward and offered his hand in friendship. Carrie nervously shook it.

"I am Legolas, son of Thanduril of Mirkwood." He spoke perfect English (we'll just call it english, because that's moat likely what it was)

Legolas. Thanduril. Mirkwood. Carrie's head spun. She was in Middle Earth! No. she repremanded herself. Middle Earth is make believe. It only exsists in the subconcious. Which means I am asleep. But if I'm asleep, how can I be musing like this? She turned to Legolas. "Smack me."

"What?"

"Just smack my face. Don't argue."

Legolas shrugged and struck the girl's cheek, but not to hard.

"My grandmother hits harder than that." Carrie frowned, but the blow had hurt, and her face stung. Yet she knew that thuis definatly not dreaming. I don't think we're in Kansas anymore... hmmm, funny how even in a situation like this the mind is able to recall amusing lines such as those...

(btw: did you know that if we had the technology to jump time/space gaps, you actually could go to middle earth. any world that exsists in your consious and/or subconsious mind exsists elsewhere in the great expanse of space and time.)

Lucy stirred, slowly and clutching her head. The last thing she could remember was the roaring of the explosion in her ears, the grit hitting and scoring her face as she was pushed backwards by the blast... Someone was shaking her, not too gently. She opened her eyes, then shut them again, sure that she could not have seen that tall, long-haired man with his strange clothing and weapons.

I'm dreaming. This is just a funny dream cos I was knocked out. I'll wake up in the hospital. Lucy opened her eyes again and saw the strange man again. Now he was pointing his longbow at her. She had seen enough of archery when she was in the country to know that he was very skilled... better get up then, if this is a dream She climbed to her feet and felt the blood run down her face from the cut above her eyebrow Ouch! what was that? as she swayed uncertainly she felt strong arms supporting her from behind. She was surrounded by the strange... well, now that she saw them it was hard to call them men, but she could not tell why. Lucy felt conciousness slipping again from her feeble grasp but even as she fell down into blackness she could tell she was caught and lifted by strong arms.

Steve was almost there, he had been playing for 30 hours straight.
Sweat was dripping from under his VR-goggles as he approached the final stage from his newest Virtual Reality Game, Fantasy Wars
He had slain 20 Kobolds and dozens of Gnomes and firey beasts to get to where he now was. He would break his own record dating from 2022
of playing longets in a row
...................................................................
He opened his eyes and looked around.
His head ached really bad and he had no idea where he was.
He was in some kind of forest. Those places existed only in media-archives and memorys. He couldn't believe it... an actual forest.
How cool was this, he wanted to explore.. maybe he would even see an animal before he would wake up. This was the weirdest dream ever....
If it was a dream that is, he didn't remember going to bed.
Maybe his VR-goggles had entered some weird game from the net...
That would be a more logical explanation.. if so he really had to buy this game. As he thought about it he realised that it would have to do something, a game has a purpose so he would have to look for some enemys or artifacts no doubt.
As he wondered through the woods he searched for anything weird, but to him even the singin of the birds was a revelation so he didn't move very fast.
Suddenly however he heard another new sound coming from behind a big tree.
Yessss my precious... we'll find that mean Baggins <Gollum>
We'll get back my present preciousssss...
Steve thought about the situation. If this was a game (as he assumeD)
He would have started it without any weapons, so he probably wasn't supposed to kill this creature. Maybe it would serve as a tutorial through the game. He decided to cautionally approach the creature.

(OOC- Maybe someone else would like to play Gollum , for i haven't read the english version of LOTR yet so i don't know what gollum says in english... so that's up to you(i am willing to be him, unless you find my lack of knowledge disturbing.
- Maybe we could use a word aside thread)

ooc: ok what time period is everyone from? i can tell that desoto is somewhere in the distant future. please post what period and country.)

Legolas frowned at Carrie's comment. This girl had not even introduced herself, yet already she was insulting him. "WHat is your name? And where do you come from?"

"Whoa! Chill out. The name's Carrie. I'm from Kentucky." The Elf just stared. "It's far away, and in the future." Again the Elf stared. But he was staring now at her clothes. SHe glanced down. Her baggy, faded blue jeans and tight black tank and bandanna must seem terribly outlandish to these Elves.

(ooc: Aerin, carrie is from 2000. the way you stated it, you also are from that general timeframe. only one of us can be from that thirty year span, and I really don't want a whole lot of people from the future. I have already taken the modern place, because I don't want you guys fighting over it. please ajust your timeframe. perhaps 1960s, that was an interesting time period. It would also be cool if we could get some ancient egyptians, romans, greeks, or chinese. maybe even some biblical hebrews. try to make them important people, like the children of governers, or princes or princesses)

Aremeriel just kept staring at the clothes of this human that said her name was Carrie, or something like that at least Aremeriel thought it was a female. Well, at least she looked like a human, but she was still very different from the humans Aremeriel had met on her wanderings, and she had met quite a few. But most of all, the clothes were different. Very different. Carrie had said she was from the future, well then how could she have gotten here and how far into the future supposing this was the truth?..: Aremeriel looked into her face and asked: "How did you get here? And if you're from the future, which Age are you from"

"Well... I suppose you could call it the nuclear age, but I'm not sure." Seeing the look of confusion on this Elf's face, Carrie explained. "Where I come from, we no longer count 'ages' in years. Their measured and named for the scientific discoveries that took place within them."

(OOC Hi, great idea gladriel. I'm going to try my hand at being gollum if you don't mind)

Suddenly gollum stiffened. There was something or someone up ahead. He got down on all fours and cautiously crept forward in a spiderlike fashion. His head peered round the tree and suddenly there was Steve right in front of him. Gollum darted backwards with a hiss.
Steve put his hands up and said "Don't be afraid I mean you know harm".
"What's this precious" Gollum hissed. "Nasty creeping creature that tries to surprise us. It's not a dwarf methinks."
"I'm a boy and I wasn't trying to surprise you." Steve replied.
"I'm lost Can you help me?"
Gollum's eyes seemed to ligth up with this answer and he suddenly became more friendly.
"A boy, precious and lost in these woods he says. Needs Smeagol's help, my precious. Oh yes! But why should Smeagol help this boy! Yes, precious. What will this boy give Smeagol? Does he have some nice food? Smeagol is very hungry."

(OOC Just to let you know, in order to stay in character I'm going to have to make Gollum try to kill you at some point Steve. Obviously, this human did not lie... She was obviously upset because she didn't know what had happened to her... "I understand that you are upset, and I'm sorry if I upset you further." Turning around, she called to noone in particular: "Can someone get something to drink for this girl?"

(OOC- strange... i thought i already posted again... maybe i posted somewhere else my mistake.....
Thanks for playing Gollum.)

FOOD, that's what the creature, who was named Smeagol as it seemed, wanted. Steve didn't had any thoug, and since he hadn't seen anything edible on his way or animals too hunt it wasn't likely that this creature was supposed to get food from him. He decided to be careful, for hungry creatures with teeny eyes are rarely good news in games like this. He suddenly remembered he had some homework left to do, before his parents would get home (otherwise he would be in trouble)
He was going to allow himself another 15 minutes in this game, before studying. And since he was going to buy this game inmediately after it would hit the stores, he might as well have a little fun in it and experiment a bit. He was curious to the possibilitys of this game in conversation and fighting. How would this creature react to taunts or punches. It might even come in handy when he would start his own game after buying it. He would test this Smeagol character......

Carrie warily accepted the drink from the Elf. She took a sip, decided it was only water, then gulped down half the bottle and thnked the Elves. THe liquid was cool, and cleared her senses, as well as cooled her body. Water just had the effect her. Carrie then realized that she had not prayed that day. She was an avide Christian, and was not about to lets that slip just because she was in Middle Earth. She excused herself from the Elves for awhile, then quickly sought out a secluded spot to think. Carrie soon found it. It was just a hollowed out tree trunk, but that tree trunk was the perfect praying/meditating spot. She resited her prayer, collected her thoughts and rejoined the waiting Elves.

Gollum looked hungrily at the young boy.
"I’m afraid I’ve got no food for you right now" Steve replied. "But if you help me, I will try to find food for you".
Gollum hesitated and then hissed "No food, it says. But what has it got in its pockets. Show Smeagol what it has got in its pocketsees".
"Firstly, I’d apreciate if you didn’t refer to me as it" Steve replied boldly. "My name is Steve if you want to call me something. And secondly, I haven’t got anyhing in my pockets that would interest you".
A faint light seemed to grow in Gollum’s eyes. He drew in his breath audibly and then hissed.
"How does this boy know what interests and what doesn’t interest us. Show us what he's got and then we will tell you whether Smeagol likes it or not. Yes precious, let the boy Steve show us what he's got if you wants the help of Smeagol." Gollum turned his head sidelong and seemed to glance at Steve out of the corner of his eye.
Lucy stirred, then slowly dragged herself out of her sleep. She was lying on a dirt floor, but not uncomfortably. A warm cloak had been draped over her, and someone had bound the wounds on her head. Gingerly she sat up, holding her throbbing temples maybe that was not such a good idea she thought as the world span around her. However, in a few seconds she found her vision clearing. A flask was held to her mouth and she drank a little of some deliciously cool liquid, spluttering over it. The person ministering to her was the stranger whom she had seen earlier it wasn't a dream then. Blow. She squinted at him as he said in a measured voice "Good morning, young lady. I trust you slept well?" his accent is a little strange, but nothing like the jerry voices in the cinema. Not that that means anything "Yes, thankyou" she replied "what happened? All I remember is the siren..." her thoughts trailed off. The air raid siren had sounded at 9:30 as usual; the jerries were nothing if not punctual. She and Richie had waited by the bridge that morning, again as usual, for the alarm. If it went off before they got half-way to school they were allowed to go home, but those at home normally assumed they were at school. For about a month they had been taking advantage of the enemies' punctuality to skip school and bathe in the Thames during the heat of the day. Most of the bombing went on to the east, in the centre of London. It seems the jerries changed to routine. But why am I here? Even if I was caught by a bomb her hands rose involuntarily to her head.

The stranger gently drew her hands away from the bandages. "I would not touch that wound now, lady, if you wish it to heal. I no nothing of any... siren"

"You must have heard it! Every morning! Are we in Richmond Park?"
His face still looked confused. Was it possible that she was that far away from home? How had she come here?

"All I know" he said carefully "is that I and my trackers came upon you lying on the ground, not half a league from here. Since you were wounded and we worried for your safety, we brought you here to our camp"

"Who are you? I see no camp."

"Nor can any foul creature that roams this way by chance! In that lies our safety. So, you know not who we are nor yet where? This is a strange matter! Your accent is unlike any I have known, as is your attire... this matter is not for me to handle. I will bring you to the King and he shall judge you. But at least let me give you some clothing more suited to this forest for the journey"

"Thank you" King? What King? Something very strange is going on here.

Aremeriel watched while Carrie performed her strange ritual. She couldn't find a better word for it. Carrie walked over to a hollowed out tree trunk, kneøt down in front of it and put her hands together. Then she sat there for a while before she came back to the waiting Elves. Aremeriel wondered why Carrie had done what she did. But she didn't dare to ask. She felt that she had used her portion of rudeness for today. Besides, she wondered even more about where Carrie came from and how she had gotten here. She would leave the questions to Legolas for now. Maybe she still got some of the answers she was looking for. She could see that the rest of the Elves where just as curious as her.

(OOC: Gladriel, are you just playing Carrie, or do you play Legolas as well?)
