CALLING ALL NATIVE AMERICANS....wether you are Sioux, Cherokee, Navaho, or Alaskan...we want you! This is a place we can talk about our ancient history or our more near future!

Please, on first arrival, if you wish to join that is, please state what tribe you are from, how much Native American blood you have in you (half, cuarter, whole, for example) and what tribe (if you know) and if you could have any Indian name, what would it be? (doesnt have to be your real one ) The only requirements are to have an interest in Native Americans...you dont have to be full blooded or even have any Native American blood to join! And feel free to participate even if you dont wish to join.

As for me, I am Blackfoot Indian, I have about a 24th in me, and I would be called She Who Sings to the Rain.

I am Cherokee and from what I understand my great great grandmother was full Cherokee! Or maybe add one more great I am not sure.

My family is from Oklahoma, New Mexico area.

A name if I got to choose would be MoonLight Dancer .

Okay I am updating this thread to add the newest members and some other stuff to keep us going.

More members:
None_Elf_Ear Romanian Tehua (sky)
Sami Sioux La Wanda (running water)
sh_wulff from the Parana and Plate river basins
TheWhiteTree Cree/Ojibway/Iroquois and maybe Mohawk
SilmevanaIriel Mission Indian
ShelG Onieda of the 6 Nations, and Chippewa Star Walker
Skyfiery Chinese Singaporean
BigMama Cherokee
A Simple Poet unknown
Bellmaker4 unknown Warrior of the Trees

Welcome to those of you who are recent joiners. Anyone interested in Native American culture is welcome. You don't have to be Native to join. If you have more to add to the list above, let us know, like your cultural background and a name you have chosen for yourself, or which has been given to you, which is Native (or First Nations, for you Cannucks).

Time for you lurkers to come out of the woodwork and tell us what interests you about the first nations of North America and South America. I'm amazed at the variety from one nation to another - more variety than say, between Spanish and Finnish on the European continent - yet we are so often lumped together as a single culture or "spirit".

I hope Broken Arrow sees this! She started a thread of Native American Resources awhile back in philosophy, and another in Welcome when she came here last summer. she was a bright firelight here, and I miss her.

what do you mean by "bright firelight"? she sounds like a very inspiring person. And Turin, are you wanting to join, or did you just want to comment? Sorry, unsure!

And that is nearly the same thing with me, Vana. I think it may have been a great great great grandma, though. Very cool!

I love Native Americans and their culture too. I am British and have no Native American blood in me.

I hope, someday, that Native Americans are treat with the same respect and given the same freedom as the other races in America.

To me, the Native Americans are the only true Americans. Most of the others are of European or African origin.

It is a pleasure to be able to speak to you.

My great-grandmother had Native American blood in her. Exactly how much isn't know, but probably 1/4, and her tribe was most likely Sioux.

As for a name, I'm not sure but something to do with the night sky. I love it!

Ya'at'eeh Tindomiel.of.Lorien...

One of the many branches of my family tree came over from Germany in 1734...eventually they settled in the Northwestern part of New Mexico...Ship Rock, Gallup, Farmington etc...we are of the Navajo Nation...Diné, 'The People'...Welcome to the Navajo Nation

Our family started the first trading post near the area known as the Four Corners...'Teec Nos Pos' Trading Post...Teec Nos Pos is a form of Navajo rug weaving...

We have many other trading posts including:

-Foutz Trading Post

-Foutz Trading Company

-Shush Yaz Trading Post

Here are a few Indian language & tribal sites:

-http://users.cybercity.dk/~nmb3879/indian.html">American Indian Language References

-Navajo Language and Bilingual Links

-Cheyenne Language Website

-Cherokee Language Lessons

-Official Site of the Cherokee Nation

-Guide to the great Sioux Nation

-The Great Sioux Nation

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-My Aunt Irene Tso is a Navajo rug weaver...we have one of her rugs hanging on our wall...a wonderful lady...she lives in Ship Rock, NM
-My grandmother would speak Navajo to me...and other times tell stories of her life on the Reservation...there is a book called, 'Indian Traders' it is about not only our family on the Navajo Reservations but also, about the surrounding culture and other families...very interesting book
I have a deep love and respect for the Native Americans...I agree with Luthien about the Indians being the true Americans...it breaks my spirit about how the Indians were treated by the early Americans and Europeans...The respect is coming forth...Many of the tribes are creating jobs for themselves...such as the Nez Perce Indian tribe up in the Washington area...I know they are in Idaho as well...but, what happened is they created an electric company...thus allowing them to give jobs to their people ( I believe it was the Nez Perce, correct me if I'm wrong)...then there is the Mescalero Apache Tribe in Mescalero, NM...the tribe owns the Inn of the Mountain Gods a popular mountain resort...
The worst thing the Government could ever have done, was put the Native Americans on Reservations and create the Bureau of Indian Affairs...Trial of Tears... I could go on and on...but, I will stop for now...
I look forward to posting in this thread....Broken Arrow, yes, I read her posts and the one where she left...I was sad to see her go
Tindomiel.of.Lorien...I will go with the name of 'Kaka ya'hoya Tewa'
this is my niece's name whose mother died December 5, 1997 (my sister)
It means: 'My eldest sister's daughter' and Tewa is Navajo for 'earth'
(I will double check the spelling)
wow, its so great you know so much about your family history! I really wish I knew more, but I suppose it may be a bit harder to find information on American Indians because they just seemed forgotten by the government, after they put them in the reservations. And thank you so much for those links! I am very anxious to check them out! I hope everyone who joins or visits here may find what they need, wether it be a friend, or information and support. Thanks again and I hope to talk to you again soon!
Hello..
I'm a card carrying member of the Eastern Band of Cherokees...reservation born real thing
You all may have heard of the Trail of Tears which was mentioned in the above post...where the Cherokees (along with the Creeks and various other tribes) were rounded up and hearded off to Oklahoma..
Well...many Cherokees took exception to that and instead of going to Oklahoma they ran off and hid in the Smokey mountains...and their descendants are still there to this day...
A white man name Holland Thomas bought some land and gave it to the Indians...a Chief by the name of Jarret Smith began to gather up all the scattered Cherokees he could find in NC,TN,SC and GA... and asked them to move to this land set aside for them...he found my great- grandfather in Georgia...he had a Cherokee wife and Cherokee Children...Chief Smith invited them all to come and live on the reservation ...which they did. This is the present day Reservation in North Carolina.
My Indian name is dream wanderer...you might see my posts with this name on various other Tolkien sites but for some reason this site wouldn't accept that...so I'm Bonotheist here..
Our tribe has a thriving tourist industry...a casino ....ka-ching! I won't get rich off of it but it helps to catch up with bills and the little extras...the money paid for a DVD player so I can watch the LOTR DVD when it comes out
I think our tribe does so well is because the people were never removed from their ancient homeland and they don't have that 'despair' that some of the other tribes have ...although the tribes in Oklahoma have done well to build themselves back up.
Funny story...my daughter was born on the T-hono O'dham reservation outside of Tucson...by a genetic freak she had blonde hair and blue eyes like her dad...after she was born I could hear the nurses in the Indian hospital whisper "Did you see that little white baby"
Bonotheist aka dream wanderer
I am very glad to meet you Dream Wanderer! I have received what they call the tears from the trail of tears. These beautiful polished black stones are something that when I look at them I remember the heritage that I have and am so proud of. I dont look indian either with my blonde hair and green eyes but I feel it in my heart.
When I was in school I took a class where we read the books "Wounded Knee" and "The Trail of Tears"! I had the hardest time reading them with out crying. I think my teacher must have understood because he never once told me I was being weird or made fun of me for it. I really appreciated him for that.
I have always lived near reservations but being there isnt enough indian in me to register I am not a card member. I think in a way that sucks because I dont want any benefits but I would love to be able to claim my heritage to the tribes and have it recognized that way.
Thank you Kaka ya'hoya Tewa! The information is priceless and much wanted! Thank you dear friend!!
Tindomiel may I change my indian name? I would prefer the name MoonLight Dancer!
Vana aka MoonLight Dancer
I am so glad that I created this Alliance, it has brought a lot of feelings I once had about my Indian heritage. Lately I have been more interested in the Irish and Scottish part of me. I am very mixed. I always knew as a kid that I had the soul of an Indian warrior and now this thread gives that feeling back to me. The Indian culture has a lot of sorrows that many later civilizations didnt have, and in that way it reminds me a bit of the Elves, or Rangers as well. Although, and this is my opinion please do not take this in the wrong way...that it is sad that our Indian nation has been nearly forced to create jobs in resort fashion. We are not a nation to be watched and preserved like a museum! We are strong and many in numbers! Therefore I think its very sad when I hear of our brothers and sisters working and running casinos and resorts on the very soil great nations once lived! I wish there was something to do about it, but unless many people are forced into action I doubt we as a nation can do much. The government has pushed us aside and veiw us as a minority...but that we are not. I hope that one day we may be seen as THE Americans and not some barbarian tribe that died out long ago.
Unfortunately I dont look Indian, though I did when I was a baby. I dont cut my hair and so it is very long, and I have grey eyes.
Tindomiel will you change my name to - MoonLight Dancer!!
I think it fits me better!!
I agree with your attitude about casinos! I hate them on indian land. They have gotten so numerous here in Washington State that it is ridiculous. They are everywhere and on every reservation. The state has even traded land to put them close to the freeways. So the indians are trading off their lands again. It really breaks my heart!
I have to disagree with you about the casinos. On my reservation it created jobs for the Indians...
The money is handled in such a way that half of the proceeds goes to the tribe....educational scholarships...road repair...for the schools etc. Lots of kids have gone on to higher education because of the casino.
The other half is divided up between the members of the tribe. Those are the per capita checks..
I really don't understand the attitude toward this...can you all explain yourself a little more fully please...I'm really confused about this one...
I am not against the indians having a way to make money for the tribes but I, for one, am not for gambling of any kind nor drinking! There have been so many fatal accidents leaving the casino here that I have a very difficult time thinking it is worth it for anyone.
Indians have a hard enough time with alcohol on the reservations, at least here, that I think to bring more on is a set back for our people not a help.
I know this is my opinion and that many more may be helped then I realize but I hate to see money taken from the mouths of babes who need food so that dad who has a gambling problem can waste his money instead of taking it home. Ot the person who has a drinking problem can go get drunk and then drive down the wrong way on a freeway ramp and kill a car load of young people on their way home form a school function.
I just think it is a waste and to put "it helps the indians" on it for a certification galls me.
Ok...I see where you are coming from. Silly me...I'm so used to my reservation and its prosperity that I forget about the problems they have elsewhere...and I have been to other reservations.
As I said on our reservation we don't have that kind of 'despair' that I see on other reservations...and that might be because these people fought back and were never removed. There isn't a lot of problems with alcholism there...its in the south and one of the counties the reservation is in (it is in two)is a 'dry' county. Not a lot of drunk driving problems...and the locale people don't gamble there. It is mostly all out of town visitors.
As far as people wasting their money gambling...I went to visit the casino last summer and as I looked at the clientele these were *not* suffering people. They were judging from their cars and manner of dress...quite well to do. Cherokee NC was already a vacation destination...what with being right outside the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway...people would also stop over at the reservation....these were tourists who would already be here anyway to visit the locale sites and who would visit the casino on a whim. The typical patron usually come and play a few rounds of video poker and have a laugh and leave.
There are groups that travel here just for the gambling...but these are the same groups also go to Atlantic City and Las Vegas. People who have money they can afford to throw away. I should mention our casino is managed by Harrah's...the same group that manages some of the Las Vegas Casinos....very classy...almost exclusive place. The 'rif-raf' doesn't go there. The locale Indians don't go there to gamble. They work there and benefit from the money the white people throw away
I know about some of the other bingo halls and casinos on other reservations...that attract the lower elements of life...but I saw no evidence of that when I last went to Cherokee NC...and I talked to my cousins who lived there. I didn't hear one negative thing about the casino..in fact they almost all agreed it improved life for the locale people.
I understand the problems some have with gambling...my brother thinks of the money as restitution (even though my family was never removed they did suffer a great amoung of hardship until the reservation was established)...my dad has the attitude if these silly people are going to throw their money away anyway...they might as well help the Indians out with it instead of making someone like Donald Trump richer!
Harrah's came in and set it up and ran it for 5 years! They have broken every agreement they had about getting to set it up here along our freeway. But I guess they decided once they saw the money they could get the county to look the other way. I guess it worked.
They have had to put special lights on the exit ramps of the freeway to keep people from going the wrong way onto the freeway which is how the kids were killed.
No, I am a native American in the fact I was born in America, but not of indiginous blood.
I can see where you are coming from, Bonotheist, and I can imagine how it is helping the people on your reservation, but I still dont like the idea of it and this is why. I have always thought of casinos as a sort of lower business and I also share the feelings of Vana. I also think it a sort of joke against our people, the white men saying to themselves, "This is the only job they can make for themselves, casinos and resorts," to me it is a form of disrespect. So many people talk about having a black man as president, well I am still waiting for the first Native American to be, and should rightfully be. For nearly 300 years the white men have controlled our government and we have been forced to watch, although many have put up fights, it has been a bee sting to a giant. Our reputation as a people, has been that of a dying race, left to "put on shows" for all those "above" us. If anything we should have more respect as a wise and ancient race that has lived here for far many more years.
Dont get me wrong, it has made me happy to know that your people are doing so well. But it also reminds me of those that arent. Instead of casinos, why not more recognized businesses, to say. Like Parador said about the Nez Peirce, they have an electric company. Why cant more reservations have jobs such as these? But they may choose, and perhaps, as long as they are not forced, to do these jobs, then it is reasonable enough. But this is my opinion and I respect yours. I am glad you have so much pride in your people.
Well...you can look at it as demeaning...but I don't....I can think of nothing better than exploiting the white man's greed for my own benefit and for the benefit of my tribe...which is something I don't have a problem with. It all depends on the angle at which you are looking at it...it could be...'Oh those poor Indians...they can't do anything better than work at a blackjack table"(but then who cares what white people think...or it could just as easily be "Those fool white people...throwing their money away like that...in my direction".
But we will just have to agree to disagree on this one...unless we get a chance to visit each other's respective rezs and see how things operate (or don't operate!) first hand.
Anyone looking forward to the "Windtalkers' movie about the WWII code talkers? I hope Hollywood got the history right this time...
