OOC; The Map of Nogrod (closed RIP)

Postby GlassHouse » Tue Jun 18, 2002 7:08 am

EDIT: 02/16/03
Want to be a bad guy with thousands of fanatical minions to do your bidding?

Consider joining The Dwarf Brotherhood.

Originally formed in the mists of time to protect the race, preserve Dwarf culture and pass on an ancient and noble heritage, The Brotherhood has become little better than a quasi-criminal organization now. Corrupted by the lust for power of it's leaders and the natural paranoia of the rest of the Dwarves. They are a shadowy group that fears exposure more than anything else and they will do anything to keep the city of Nogrod from being discovered by modern man.

The Brotherhood has just captured two rebellious Dwarves who were helping our Fellowship. (Beryl Silvermast and her brother Kobal) and two other members of the Fellowship are in their hands. But they still don't have the Map.
We need a ruthless leader, a Machiavellian master mind to control the awesome resorses of this world wide cabal.

The Humans must not succeed in their quest to find the ancient Dwarven stronghold!!

Edit; 6/20/02.
The Main RP Thread has started this is now the OOC thread.
The story is called The Map of Nogrod

you can find it here; here
end of edit.

*********************

>EDIT: 10/11/02
Primula_Brandybuck has left us.

her two Dwarf characters Beryllium (Beryl) and Kobal Silvermaster are inactive, captured by the Dwarf Brotherhood

Anyone interested, please post in the OOC thread.

Or maybe someone would like to take on the role of Legolas as an eccentric billionaire or Buddhist monk <

*******************

>The Map of Nogrod

A group of modern human's is told that the map they found somewhere, an antique book store - or in a castle while on vacation in Switzerland,
- somehere - is actually a map leading to an ancient dwarven stronghold.

The proprietor of the store - or the lord of the castle, gives the group supplies (some perhaps special weapons, other devices, maybe an ancient text) for a venture to discover exactly what is located on the map.

Of course this implies that Tolkien's mythology had a basis in the real world.

Which would be hard enough for people to come to grips with.

But to complicate matters further, it seems that not all of the ancient races are dead.

Elves and Dwarves walk among modern humans attempting to go unnoticed in present day Europe or America. Maybe Numenorean Rangers and even a few Hobbits are around. Certainly some evil creatures have survived. But I'd imagine that even the "good" races are not very friendly towards modern humans.
Most keep to themselves and hide in out of the way places.

But maybe a few try to pass themselves off as humans.

-Danny Devitto is really descended from Thorin Oakenshield.
David Bowie is an Elf, (using make up to simulate ageing) maybe Bowie has been an entertainer for hundreds of years.
Could be your favorite supermodel has a secret.
-Can you picture Legolas flying around in a private jet as an eccentric billionaire?

Or living in the furthest reaches of Nepal as a Buddhist monk revered by the locals for his agelessness?

How else would Elves and Dwarves have figured into our history?

The older races want this map because of something hidden in the ancient Dwarf city.
- Maybe the older races are afraid that if the city is discovered their secret will be out
or maybe the Elves have forgotten the way out of the "real world" and can't leave Middle Earth as they wish to
- or perhaps it's the last horde of Mythril
-or maybe each race thinks it's something different.

what do you think?

******************

including brief profiles of the characters. Most players have given more details on their characters in the OOC thread

Is getting a bit anxious to get out and see more of the world.
Recently employed at the Illumiariom Rare Book Store.
Out-doorsie type, likes hiking in the White and Green Mts. and has done some rock climbing.
Other interests; Hung Ga Kung Fu, Celtic music, jazz.<

Nengwathel; (Nengwathel)
full Elf, is Nengwathel still with us?

Randi Buckley;
(KBrandybuck)
(inactive as of about page 35)
Hobbit or partly descended from Hobbits.
Recently moved to Vermont from California, after deciding she needed a change from her life as an police inspector / homicide division.
PhD in cultural anthropology
Likes Irish folklore and music, rock climbing and making friends.

Alaric; (Findarato)
(Half Elf. European origins(?)
Comes from wealth and privilege. Learned something of his heritage from his grandfather, who has moved on and taken a new identity to hide his immortality.
Alaric knows of the existence of the map but may not know what is actually at the ancient dwarf city.

Arthur MacGinnis;
(GlassHouse) (temporarily inactive)
Owner of a local specialty bookstore; "The Illuminarium Book Store,
Old and Rare Books, Antique Maps and Prints".
Old, described by Randi as appearing somewhere between 50 and 200.
Reads, drinks coffee and smokes little cigar incessantly.
Art or Mac may be in procession of the map, we think Art is a Maia. I expect that when he gets to know Fin and his friends he'll find a reason to send them out to discover what's really on the map.

Clea Amberly or Clea Amberlheim; (AurabellaBolger)
student(?)
Clea has a darker side that she inherited from her family. She doesn't fully understand it, but it frightens her. She resists her dark impulses with the aid of her interest in music and art. She wants to be a photographer or illustrator. Enjoys Louis Armstrong and Jane Austen, among others and is seeking new friends and a different kind of life than she knew at home.

Gwendolen and Jack Seaver;
(undomiel)
Sister and Brother. Wealthy, powerful, live in NYC in a mansion on the Hudson.
Jack heads a large corporation he rebuilt after their grandfather (the founder of the firm) nearly ruined the family by squandering all his money on some dark obsession.
Gwendoloen wants to know what drove him to it.

Kendra; (NabooHuntress)
student, waitress at The Queen of Argyll, the local pub/cafe.

College girl who doesn't have any direction but isn't as dumb as she seems. (her own words) May have a crush on a guy she's seen at the university.

Alys MacRee ; (Alys)
Originally from Argyll on the Cowal Peninsula, Scotland, is coming to Vermont to Teach Literature and Celtic Studies at the college. Loves her home and is unhappy about leaving but can't pass up the job opportunity. Alys has an ancestor tied to the quest somehow and she may find she has a part to play herself.

Laura Elmor; (Rose Cotton)
(inactive as of about page 30)
Half Elf
Laura recently graduated from high school and has been living with her father (Haldor Elmorë or Hal Elmor)in California. Hal has just told Laura the truth about her ancestry and although she believes him, she isn't quite sure how to take it. Needing time to put things in perspective, Laura leaves California for Vermont, where she may find more than she bargained for.

Yagûl; (Grubhosh)
A real live - full bred ORC!
Orc's have a hard time operating in the open, Yagûl has to hide her features and stay out of sight. Is Yagûl a loner or is she part of an Orc organization? Anyway, she's after the map, for what reason, we don't yet know but it can't be anything good.

Beryllium Silvermaster or Beryl; (Primula_Brandybuck)
(inactive as of about page 35)
Dwarf, and proud of it.
Fine Arts professor at Trinity University in Dublin, where she knew Randi's mysterios uncle Brian. The other faculty at Trinity like her, but think shes a little strange, but they out it down to her artistic temperment".
Because Dwarves live longer than Human lifespan, she and her kin are forced to move and change identities every few decades. She's due for a move and is heading for our small Vermont college.

Mitchell Harris;( Lothsel)l
Human
Appearence: Tall, slim, fair, dyed black hair, kinda Gothic. The Goth appearence was a desperate rebellion from humanity. The real person is a friendly, almost jovial geek. Mitchell goes to college in Vermont. Is a bit of a LotR/scifi geek too.

Kobal Silvermaster; (Primula_Brandybuck)
(inactive as of about page 35)
Dawrf
Beryl's brother. A rancher in the outback of Australia. Lives an isolated life away from the world of Men. Once a mamber of the Dwarf Brotherhood, a secret society that runs things in the Dwarf world, now become a corrupt semi-criminal organiztion.
Kobal has come to warn his sister that The Brotherhood is aware of her search for Nogrod and is out to stop her.

The Wraith; (Nazgûl Lord)
The Wraith is in fact one of the original nine Ring Wraiths, who served Sauron in the Second and Third Ages of Middle Earth. As one of The Nazgûl, he (it?) was one of the most terrible and most feared servants of the ancient Enemy. But in the millennia following the destruction of the One Ring, he has roamed the Earth in a diminished form, dreaming only of revenge.
The Wraith is on the trail of the Fellowship and has designs on Nogrod. He's already stolen a Ring of Power that was in the procession of one of the Fellowship and he used it to defeat Arthur MacGinnis in a battle of wills. Now the Fellowship is leaderless and a terror beyond anything they can imagine follows them.

Darin VII; (Darin-Bloodaxe)
Dwarf, Master of the Dwarf Brotherhood

Nienjah; (Novice )
full Elf,
bios to follow

I think thats a good hold on your ideas... I mean one could og as far as saying that what happened in LoTR was real and the out come of the War of the Ring led to the leave of the Elves and Men were left to rule ME, then you would have the Middle ages and so on... Medival, etc.

I'd love to join!

Great idea.

The travellers could be totally ignorant of the real implications of trying to find the map...at first.
The elves and dwarves would understandably try to recover the map. This could lead to conflict between the older races and men.

I like the idea you have about the elves forgetting about the undying lands too. That would explain why they are here.

I will think about this idea more when I'm not so sleepy.

btw, David Bowie, I never doubted for one moment that he was an elf! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

cool. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

just wanted to say Thank you all for responding. You are all welcome.
I'm new at this planning stuff so please bear with me.
for now, I think we should get an outline together, just a list of basic premises, so we all know where things stand, like....

Story takes place in the modern world as we know it
Human's have been out of touch with the elder races since at least the middle ages. Now even those contacts are only
remembered in myth.

Yes Liadan, I think I'd like it if Tolkien really did find The Red Book of Westmarch and use that as his inspiration, just like he claimed on occasion. That means all the history of ME is just as he wrote it in his books, including the War of the Ring.
Grubhosh will bring the Orc's <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
niniel* I definetly think there should be a conflict between all the elder races and Men. tThe way I see it, The Age of Men has been very hard on all of them.
whatever else we think of

Those are just suggestions.
Just a few things to get us started, not too many details, I wouldn't want to get in the way of anyone's imagination.
But I think this story has all kinds of interesting aspects that could be developed.
I can think of a bunch just off the top of my head.
How to the different races relate to technology?
Do Dwarves love working in high tech alloys and building massive engineering projects like the Aswan dam?
Or are they too busy keeping out of the way of humans and withhold all their best ideas for themselves.

Do Orcs love high tech weapons or prefer the good old fashioned personal approach?

Do some Elves use technology while others shun it?

I'm just throwing out ideas, What I really want is help sorting these out and coming up with more. I'll try to get this outline into a more organized form.
We could take a little more time to brainstorm or if you're all good with the way things are, I could go ahead and write a first post and we could do our brainstorming as we go.

What do you think?
Please post whatever comments or ideas you have.

Thanks!

Good suggestions Glasshouse, I will keep an eye on this thread to see when you are ready to start.

Where will you be setting this? Will we be globe trotting? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I had an idea about how a few elves could live for thousands of years without attracting too much notice. They could come from old aristocratic families, where the land and titles have been passed on for centuries. Instead of passing from father to son, it's just the same elf. Some of these families are very eccentric, so they would be able to pass it off.

I like the idea about the dwarves, I'm sure they would be good at modern technology.

btw,I'm sure there are orcs in the mafia (or government, can't decide) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Here we go: I like this idea. Especially the slow dawning that this is Tolkien, as none of the characters will put it together right away.

Randi Fox was browsing in the back when Finlay come in. Of course she had no idea his name was Finlay, she had been disturbed by the bell at the door which announced his entrance. She was a recent transplant from Southern California and endlessly dismayed over the rampant destruction of the lovely hills and coastline, the spread of the "stucco algae" as it was called. What she was going to do in Vermont, she had no idea. She had friends in New Hampshire, a little money from an inheritance, but she wasn't sure she wanted to ply her profession: for Randi had been one of the first female homicide detectives in the US and frankly, she was tired of dealing with male dominated politics, dead bodies and sociopaths. She hated throwing all that away: it had been a terrible struggle even to get onto a police force for she barely made the height requirements and could only keep her weight down with the most grueseome struggles. But there had to be more to life than crime and punishment and she coudl feel bits of her soul die with each new abducted child and domestic crime

As a child, she had problems with her feet which required several operations and even now, she hated wearing shoes, preferring flip flops. Nonetheless, She had some pretty good outdoor skills and had signed on as a part time climbing instructor at a local guide service, despite the fact that the climbing shoes cramped her toes dreadfully. But that work would only be seasonal. Maybe when winter set in,she could go back to her real love: antiquities, maps, lost worlds, strange languages and fantasies of things that might never have been.

"Hmm" she said" when she say Finlay. "Cute. Kinda down at the heels, but cute."

Oh, and I think the dwarves would be hidden because they were always hidden and hording things in Tolkien so there is no reason for them to pop out now. As for elves and hobbits, you've got several options. Either there are none, or they are hidden, or the blood is thin and pops out in full force from time to time. The dwarf city needs to be someplace remote, unexplored, therefore dangerous because of the locals (like central asia or someplace, or some war torn country) and they'll need a pretty good set of skills to get in and out without getting killed.

This goes along the lines of something that runs around in my head: map which leads to what's left of Moria, etc.

Since Tolkien is always reaarrangint the planet after every major event, the dwarf city doesn't have to be in the highest mountains there are. Or even Europe. Up to you - you be the boss.

I think we have lift off. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I wasn't sure for a while. I stayed up after midnight last night writing that 1st post and then when I couldn't seem to work out how to get things underway, I was ready to scrap it and start again. Trouble is it's been a really difficult week so I didn't have much time to put into it.

I'm going to separate the RP thread from the OOC thread. I'll provide a link in each thread.
Please, I'd really appreciate it if we could keep the OOC comments in the OOC thread.
Just subscribe to both threads so you'll know when they get updated.

KBrandybuck interesting character, I'm guessing she has Hobbit blood but doesn't know it (?)

Hadn't thought that the races might be mingled, but why not. There's enough precedent in Tolkien. More interesting complications as some characters discover hidden roots. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

***IMPORTANT*** KBrandybuck Please put your post in the new RP thread. GlassHouse, I've been watching you, and I must agree I like this idea. At first I wasn't so sure but after reading your's and KBrandybuck's posts, I am excited. I'm not a very experienced RPer, but I would like to join or else I'll just read along.

My take: I think the elves and hobbits, and maybe even wizards (man behind the counter in bookstore?) still live among us, just in few numbers and hidden. Dwarves love their caves and still have a place of their own we are unaware of.
If you need a university student to call on, I'm there!

What will be the name of this thread?

Hi Nabboo, I got the RP thread set up.

It's called The Map of Nogrod.

This is now the OOC thread.
I like the idea of the book store prop being Istari. I hadn't quite figured him out at all.
I see no reason why more Istari couldn't be sent into the world after the 3rd age. But if he turns out to be Gandalf himself, maybe he should have only a vague memory of his last stint in ME. like how he had rouble remembering Gandalf the Grey after becoming Gandalf the White, only more pronounced. Might be more suspenceful if he doesn't have all the answers either.

But Istari are a good idea, you know how Gandalf was always sending unlikely people on adventures<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Anyone want to take on the character?

Everyone has made excelent suggestions, feel free to work them in to the story.
Join right in.

(hey, uh Naboo... did you ever see what happened in the Drunken Orc after you left? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> )

Why, yes, Randi is a hobbit, or as close to one as you'll get in this century. A curiously adventurous hobbit with a 9mm Glock in the gun safe at home and a license to carry concealed. When she says "I'm out of estrogen and I have a gun" she means it. Her passport is up to date, she has frequent flyer miles on Continental and she knows what evil is: she's been at enough crime scenes to have a better than a nodding acquaintance with the Devil.

However, this grows tiresome and she'd rather write books about the origins of myth and legend in Northern Europe and let the gun rust and maybe stop obsessing about her weight and make new friends whose first names aren't "Sgt." or "Officer" or "Special Agent."

niniel* I've set the story to begin in a college town in Vermont.

that way it's slightly isolated (surrounded by woods and very old mountains) but has access to an international cast of characters. (students and faculty from all over the world)

Where it goes from there is completely open .

KB, i love the way you've worked out the backgrownd of your character. I'm still kind of new at RP's and I've been letting things develope as I go, but I think I like you're method better.

Let's see what we know about Finlay so far.

Finlay
College student, majors are archeology and history.

Grew up in the same community he's attending college in. Is getting a bit restless to see more of the world.

Lives with at least one room mate, doesn;'t have a lot of money.
needs this job!

Hmmmm, needs a little work but that's a start.

Hi Findarato, good to meet you!

Finley, thanks for the compliment. I am not one to go in for the lengthy description of the stunningly beautiful and clever character with many adjectives about her hair and eyes. I'd rather show people what sort of person we're dealing with, otherwise she just becomes another stunningly beautiful woman with hair and eyes of an unusual color that defy words.

Randi, by the way, like all hobbits has a pleasant, rather than a handsome face, and her hair has a mind of its own. She has to shave her legs every day which is a serious drag. She is renting an old 18th farmhouse. She feels very footloose after many years in law enforcement. She has registered the gun with the local constabulary and they know who she is, just in case any dead bodies turn up and they might like to ask for the expertise of someone who has lectured at Quantico.

Her specialty was cold crimes - and she was very good at parsing sites where a body might be nothing more than a few bones. That's where the cultural anthropology thing comes in - using archeological techniques to process a crime scene. It looks like Randi and Finley will get on the same page very quickly. Their skills will become useful if the party comes across, oh, say, some 7000 year old dead orc skeletons. or dwarves, or what have you.

By the way in her spare time, she is working on a methodology to turn elves into orcs and is speculating on what plant poisons Morgoth may have used, whether the process was reversible, whether it was inherited, etc. She has many theories, which she loves to trot out for other Tolkien fanatics. She mentioned this once to a scientist at a crime lab and just got a pitying look. "You need to get a life, Inspector," said the crime lab technician.

She likes climbing because you turn your brain off to all other concerns except the climb and the companionship. And she likes to get way up high and look down on the big picture and think.

I have changed her last name to Buckley. Her given name was Brandy, which she always thought was silly, especially when she became a police officer. So she dropped the B and became Randi.

Just a thought, maybe we could use this thread to claim characters or something. pretty soon everyone will be an elf or a hobbit in that thread and there won't be any humans. :S

I'll post this afternoon to introduce my character, hopefully. I'm at work now. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Geesh KB, that's great! I hope you work some of that into the story! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Alys, haven't said a word about eyebrows yet, But even if they don't stick out beyond the brim of his hat, I'm sure they're very expressive <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
Of course you can join.

Naboo, sure... just another heart breaker <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

undomiel, agreed!

If you all would write a brief bio for your characters and post them in this thread, I'll edit one of the first posts to include a list.

So far we have a human; (Finlay)
a Hobbit or Hobbit descended person; Randi
an Elf; Nengwathel
a part Elf; Alaric
and a potential Istari; Art

I think we could use more humans or at least people like Randi and Finlay who don't really know the truth about their ancestry.

If everyone is in on to things from the start, there will be no one to be astounded as they discover the truth.
a little Suspense is so much more fun IMHO <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Sure, I'm off for the rest of the day, have fun.

But the way I see it (just me) I think the book store is getting a little crowded.

not everyone has to be in the same place right now. New characters could be anywhere, even in some other country.

I think what should or could happen is that Fin will get the job.

maybe he'll strike up an instant friendship with the remarkably gregarious Randi and her new friend.

Perhaps Fin could ask them to celebrate his new employment in at the local college hangout/bar.

other new characters can introduce themselves now in the book store or wait for the group to meet in the bar or in some totally different place.

These are just suggestions, if you have a better idea, please go with it.
<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Finley, totally on board with this idea. The action can unfold through the eyes (partially) of people who thought this was just a novel, or maybe hadn't read Tolkien at all. Their true ancestry can be revealed, and more about them can be revealed as well. Maybe even the two elves we have so far haven't figured out how Finley and Randi relate to the plot. I am sure that Randi's and Finleys skills will be useful as they go into the abandoned city and try to piece together what happened. And if you're going caving, you better have a climbing guide with you. She may or may not bring the gun.

Randi was adopted but her parents drowned in a river rafting accident when she was 12. They had a large extended family, so she never lacked for homes to live in etc. She doesn't know anything about her birth parents - neither did her adopted parents or the hospital where she was abandoned. She was very small as a child and fearing she would be stunted, she was given growth hormones. These have done nothing positive to her overall health, but she is taller than she would have been otherwise. She celebrates her birthday on 9/22, even though she doesn't know when she was born, and she left California on 9/23, the day after her 50th birthday. Sound familiar? As previously stated, she has some money from a relative who lived in Ireland (explains her visits). He was a lecturer at Trinity College in Dublin on pre Christian Ireland and on the relationship of Irish fairy myths to Christianity. He was a great one for hill walking and went hiking in the Wicklow Mountains one day and hadn't been seen since. Randi was his only heir as he never married and didn't like his own near relations all that well. The money is from some books he wrote, and she gets royalty checks periodically. There is also a cottage on the West Coast of Ireland which he left her(which we can use if we wind up travelling to Europe. " His disapparance was part of the reason she quit her most recent job and decided to uproot. Even though the courts have turned his estate over to her, Randi is not entirely satisfied that all has been done to fine him and might take a little jaunt over there to see for herself. The Gardai (irish law enforcement) is woefully in efficient and she's pretty sure they have left many unturned stones in the case of the missing man. Whose name I don't know yet, but I'll think of something.

Hmm... Alaric probably won't have a clue that anyone else wants the map. He thinks it's to a vast horde of treasure- which he is not really interested in for the monetary value, but rather to further back up his grandfather's stories. I just realized that was a heck of a long post! I never meant for it to be that long and I sort of forgot that there is this huge world out there. Anyway, brief info thing on Alaric

Name: Alaric Gelydh
True name: Ilyatur
Age: 20
Hair: raven, slightly longer than normal for men, but it looks right on him, not at all feminine.
Eyes: green
Brief bio: See 1st post.
Secret terror: Driving. He likes all other technology but has never mastered driving a car.
Curse: He can be very self-centered and egotistical.
Gift: He sometimes gets bits and pieces of Foreshadowing. Not often, but I have a feeling they will increase.
GlassHouse, if I hadn't stopped by and told you earlier, I thought I should now.

I can't say how great I thought it was that you and your group sat down and thought out what you wanted and how you wanted it to go before jumping into a poorly thought out thread.

I wish more posters who want to RP would do this! Thank you.
