OOC: "The Mist"

Pull out your pack and head on down to the Prancing Pony for some great Role Playing (try to stay in character)!

Postby Ashlei » Sun Aug 18, 2002 12:06 pm

Since the RP is losing the person with control over the OOC Thread's title and first post, I thought it would be appropriate to start it over. Please post here instead of in the old one. We'd like to keep this story alive in spite of losing Aduial!

To begin with, here's the summary of the RP as it currently stands.

INTRODUCTION (First Post)

There is a disturbance in the night, whispers sound listlessly on the ominous wind, shadows seem darker and conceal more. The animals of the forest seem uneasy.... the wolves shift and gather, the black squirrels scurry from tree to tree, their sharp claws scraping eerily on the rough branches. The birds are silent at times, and full of noise at others. Dark elves wake from their stony or lofty dwellings and peer into the gathering mist. The mist is eerie and ominous as well, creeping into every corner and slowly seeping and encircling the trees. Clouds cover the moon, and it seems there will be no sunrise tomorrow. Even hobbits wander from their comfortable homes, curious about the thick mist. Dwarves creep out of their deep caverns for the mist seeps into even there as well, and the smoothed ground stills with cold and anxiety. Men venture out, troubled as well. Lost in the mist, somehow all seem driven to one point in the forest: a deep ravine that has escaped the mist. One single ent holds aloft a stone that resembles a Silmarill in it's glow but not its power, shedding light on all. Few ents remain: most have disappeared long before the mist. Those that stay gather at the top of the ravine as if to protect it. So many different species and kinds of each somehow have found their way here, and wait as if for some sort of sign as to what to do.

STORY

Jack is a young and rather hasty young ent who is very curious about the Mist, but the elder ents refuse to talk to him about it. Nieninque, a 16-year-old elf, approaches him to ask what is causing the Mist, only to find that he knows no more than she does. Meanwhile, Cai and his pack of fifteen wolves find that the ents are blocking everyone from either entering or leaving the ravine. Jack intercedes on Cai’s behalf to let him and the pack enter the safety of the ravine. Eriu, one of the oldest elves left in Middle-Earth, and her horse, Ayvar, approach the small group, also wondering about the origins of the Mist. Jack informs them that the Mist is kept away from the ravine by the power of the star-stone being held by an ent. When it fails, the Mist may enter. Cai expresses concerns about the Mist killing his pack, which used to be larger, and Eriu suggests they leave the ravine to investigate what is causing the Mist. Nieninque notices Cai for the first time, and they share a joyful reunion, while hoping that their shared friend, Iavasel, shows up. Cai also mentions that his pack will need to hunt soon. An orc named Grubhosh wanders through the Mist, and comes upon the ravine. Grubhosh climbs out on a dead tree branch to see better, but it snaps from her weight and she falls right into the middle of the group. Though the elves are a little skeptical about joining forces with an orc, Jack welcomes her into the group.

Meanwhile, Eladrielia has noticed the Mist and had a brief chat with sunflowers about it’s cause. She decided to talk with the trees, and summoned her horse Moonshine to take her to the Master of the Trees. She has now arrived at the ravine, and strikes up a conversation with Eriu about the cause of the Mist. Jack suggests a possible escape from the ravine through a hidden tunnel he has found. Eladrielia leaves the group to talk to a very old ent, the Master of the Trees, while Jack leads Nieninque, Cai and his pack, Eriu and Ayvar, and Grubhosh to the tunnel.

Along the way, Cai and the pack separate themselves to hunt. They have no luck for some time, then come upon a buck, which happens to be Nieninque’s beloved steed, Tavaro. She senses the danger and leaves the group, arriving just in time to save him from the pack. Nieninque sets off to rejoin the others, but Cai encounters a mysterious man from his past called Scarlet, who transports them both to Gondor.

Nieninque catches up with the others, who have by now reached the tunnel. Their way is blocked, however, by three nasty-looking wolfish creatures with yellow eyes. Grubhosh leaps forward to fight them, but another nine suddenly appear, for a total of a dozen creatures, she is quickly chased into a tree, but Nieninque comes to her rescue by killing most of the creatures with arrows.

Shortly after the battle, Ashlei, a young human hailing from Dale, tumbles down the side of the ravine into the middle of the carnage. Nieninque sends Tavaro off to find food for the pack, and then turns to greet the newcomer. Jack thanks Nieninque and Grubhosh for dispatching the creatures, and then pulls back some roots on the ravine wall to reveal a cave. Ashlei decides to join the group in hunting for the source of the Mist. The group gathers supplies for their journey from inside the cave. As they work, Jack notices the light filling the ravine dimming, and realizes that the star-stone is beginning to fail. It will hold for now, but soon the ravine will no longer be a place of refuge. The group enters the tunnel, and are soon joined by Tahsh, Jack’s cat, who has grown overly large due to being fed ent-draught.

Eladrielia’s conversation with the ent is not very comforting, though she learns that the ents know where the Mist is coming from, and fear they may soon have to venture out of the ravine to that place. The keys which once locked the Mist away have been stolen, which is why the Mist was released. She receives a message from Manwe telling her to find the keys. She sees the group disappearing into the tunnel, so she rides after them.

The group in the tunnel is joined by Nieninque’s sister, Iavasel, who appeared suddenly out of a side tunnel, and Cai’s pack, who apparently was driven into it by fear of the Mist. Iavasel enchants the tunnels so that others may not follow them, and warns that the group must not be separated, or some will lose their way.

That’s my summary. Parin Steelfist walked up to the group somewhere on page 1, but was never heard from again, so his entrance is not included. M.J. made a one-liner appearance apart from the group on page 2, and was also never heard from again. If either of these people wish to start posting again, I’d be happy to go back and include you, but please, be serious about this thread if you want to come back.

The way things now stand, Cai and Scarlet are in Gondor doing something, we don’t know what. The group in the tunnel consists of Jack, who needs to be written out of the story (ideas?), his cat Tahsh (I’ll be happy to take her over, Ashlei can talk to cats), Ashlei, Cai’s pack of 15 wolves, Iavasel, Nieninque, Eriu and her horse Ayvar, and Grubhosh. Tavaro is currently back in the ravine, and Eladrielia and Moonshine are entering the tunnel, soon to be confronted by the shifting passageways.

SOME NOTES:
I thought Grubhosh was a girl, not totally sure though. Tell me if I’m wrong and I’ll change it.

Eriu has not been heard from for a while, please post soon if you’d like to continue with the story, or write yourself out.

I did the summary before coming up with continuation ideas so I could see what we’d done in terms of predicting already. Iavasel, as you can see, the ravine being the center of the Mist is not going to work, it’s the last stronghold against it and the ents have said the center is elsewhere. It was an interesting idea, but I don’t think it’ll work. You might want to edit your last two posts. I hope this summary helps people who, like me, were starting to forget what had happened. I’ve pretty much used up my Internet time for today getting this done, so I won’t post on my ideas for the continuing story until tomorrow. Cya then!

Wow, Ashlei that is wonderful thank you. You've done an excellent summary and very throuough. I will gladly edit my posts to fit. So, now we need to find the keys? Where should they be? If there is anyone else besides myself and Ashlei still interested here, would you please speak up?
Thanks for all your hard work and willingness to pull this thing back together.

Not really a problem, this is an interesting story, and I don't want it to quit. My only other RP at the moment is at a critical point right now, and is patiently awaiting the clearing up of someone's writers block, so I've got the time to spare right now. And that one's really slow moving anyway, so it doesn't really need much time per day.

I have a vague idea of what I want to do, definitely involving an underground cavern, but I haven't read the Silm, and don't know much backstory to LOTR, so I'm going to call a friend who does, and I'll try to get a storyline made up and posted ASAP. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

P.S. Glad you like the summary. I think once this gets going I'll have to add on to it every page or so, so I never have to put that much work into it again - LOL! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Alright, sounds good to me. However, even if we do find the keys, how will the mist be um, rounded up and put back to wherever it came from?
Hello you two.
Yes I am sorry that I didn't post in awhile. I wasn't sure of what was going on and I was waiting for the summary to come about. It is very good by the way. I am now not confused anymore. Here are my opinions on things...

*Tavaro will be out wandering for quite a bit. He won't be joining us in the tunnel. He is way too big. If we ever leave the tunnel then I will call him to me. If we don't plan on leaving the tunnel, then I will write him in to be with us in the tunnel. You guys just have to tell me of we are planning on staying in the tunnel or leaving it at some point or time.

*I haven't visited the thread yet but I think that the way we can write Aduial out is that she becomes a tree in the center of the tunnel which blocks our path. That way it will be a conflict in the role play and an interesting thing to get out of. It is just an idea. We don't have to use it.

*I think that the keys can be located at different cities in Middle Earth. Riddles with each Key will be left so that we have to think to find the next key. Each of us can write one or two of the riddles and it will lead us to different places or cities in Middle Earth. The first one will be hidden within Jack who will turn into a tree and die. There inside him, we will find the key. Or it can be around the cats neck or what not. It doesn't matter. Each key can be descriptive in any way you want.

Alright so those are my opinions. They are strictly ideas and they can change/not use them. Thanks you guys!

Love
Nieninque

Hi, I have a story line to suggest. I think you'll like it! I had a vague idea about bringing back Melkor/Morgoth, but I don't know much backstory to LOTR, so I called a friend to help me out, and she shot down my idea. So we brainstormed for a half-hour and the following is what we came up with.

Morgoth is gone, completely locked away from Middle-Earth. His influence, however, continues. Before his defeat he created an evil Mist, locked away in a cavern deep beneath the earth. He created seven keys, in the form of gems, to contain the Mist within the cavern. All seven are needed to hold it, so removing even one will let it begin to spread. The Mist was created to reshape, destroy, and otherwise pervert all that the Valar struggled to preserve in Middle-Earth. As the Mist grows in power, life itself will be twisted. Thus the wolfish creatures guarding the tunnel. In answer to the question about how we get the Mist back into it's container: the container is not physical, it is magical. The round cavern that used to contain it is empty other than the seven keyholes placed around the walls, and a plain stone pillar in the center. When the keys are activated, the Mist will be drawn back into the cavern, and will be trapped inside a shimmering globe above the pillar, created by light from the seven keys. Key word here: activated. Each of the keys is attuned to a different thing. You must be holding a piece of that thing, being, or place, when you insert the key, or it will not be activated.

As was mentioned above, this setup was created by Morgoth. He never had the chance to use it, and it has lain dormant for thousands of years, only recently discovered by one of the late Sauron's servants, Umeatur. I created the name by plugging 'evil' and 'master' into a Quenya dictionary and mutilating the results. Better name suggestions would be appreciated if you don't like that one. Personally, I don't think it sounds evil enough, but it was the best I could come up with on my own. Umeatur(or whatever his name is) removed all seven keys, and magically scattered them over the world, so that they appeared close to the thing they are attuned to. He then left a mocking letter written on the walls of the cavern in Dark Speech, daring any who find it to try to undo what he's done. He believes it's impossible, but we, of course, will be determined to try.

I'm currently working on a post detailing what I'm going to say next. I think the entrance to the tunnel should be guarded in someway. My idea was a curtain of fire that magically appears when you step into the doorway. Jack will get burned up, while the rest of us just get singed. Aduial mentioned earlier that Jack had a stone which gave light when the holder either was an ent, or held a piece of ent bark. Jack will drop it while burning, and Ashlei will find it. This is one of the keys. We'll then find the cavern, described above. Grubhosh can read Black Speech, so she can decipher the letter, yet to be written, and we're off after another key.

Sound good? Any volunteers to write the note? Like I said, if you like the story I'll go ahead and post the finding of the first key.

EDIT: Nieninque, I just reread your post. We will be remaining underground for a while, but we will most likely reemerge to hunt for the remaining keys.

To both of you, and others coming back: I have no idea where the other keys are, or what they're attuned to. Ideas? Suggestions?

Lady_of_the_stars, welcome to the Mist. We don't have so many people in here right now that we're overcrowded, so you're more than welcome. There are currently only three of us posting, but hopefully the other three will come back soon. The main thread is simply titled "The Mist". I suggest you enter the story through a side tunnel ahead of us as those will not have started shifting yet. Please read at least the summary of the events so far if you don't want to read the whole story. The group in the tunnel is most likely standing around looking at Iavasel, the newcomer, because those of us in the OOC thread are still hammering out the future storyline. You can introduce yourself when you get back from camp, and hopefully the story will be moving again by that time. We're glad to have you.

Ashlei and Nieninque, those sound like wonderful ideas. I'm sorry, I haven't edited my posts yet. I just can't think what to say in place of what's there right now. Hmm, ideas for the keys? Well, the first one is something to do with Jack. OK. Well, It's obvious that all the keys should be different. So, perhaps one should be drawn to water, another to rock? I don't know really.

Specific things, Iavasel. The first one is activated by an ent or a holder of ent bark. I haven't posted that yet because of what you just said. Water, rock, those are elements. The keys could be linked to those instead, that's an interesting idea. Let's see, Water, Fire, Air, Earth(dirt), Rock, Plants?, something else? Then where would they be hidden? Someone want to take the ball and run with it here?

Alright so we will have to find these keys that have to be activated by a SPECIFIC object that you find in a SPECIFIC place. (Not yelling :-P) Do we want to use the riddle idea?? And such things can include (Ideas. I am just throwing some things out.) Kingsoil, A pint of ale from the Prancing Pony(? Don't know about this one!!), Something out of Moria. yada yada yada. What we can do is if we use the riddles, because I think Ashlei was leaning toward it, they will contain clues to the object that you have to hold and where you will find the key/gem. Another "If we use the riddles" One of us will know the answer and that one person won't tell a soul until either of the other people figure it out. It will keep the story interesting.

Alright TORC is aggravating me right now so I am sorry if I didn't post. Torc wouldn't let me post at all. Alright so here goes my ranting. ehehe. So if we decided to use the riddles...

*We could each come up with a different one and only you would know the answer. The other characters would have to fiddle around and figure out the answer. This could keep the story going/interesting.

*Each one would lead us to a different place and would contain the thing that we would have to hold when activating a key. Or Each riddle could give a clue about what thing we are supposed to be holding and we would have to find it. You can interpret this in many different ways and all ways are good at this point.

*The things found that we would need to hold when activating the key could include Kingsoil, An Elven Ear (?)(Throwing out Ideas here... Not sure of which way you want to take this, If you want it to be plants or icky things that had to have been living or whatever. I don't care), A piece of Isildor's Father's sword, I don't know. Those are some ideas for you. I will think of more. Just give me a direction that you want to go in.

Thanks
Nieninque

Haha, Nieninque, since the keys are attracked to certain substances, your suggestion of an Elven Ear just made me laugh. I can just picture an elf walking around with a key stuck to his ear. wow random

Ashlei- you're right, i think that making the keys attracted to elemental things is too general, unless you maybe coupled them? Like, I don't know, if jack is going to burn up, that's kind of like two elements at once, you've got a plant in fire. Or like a well is water inside the earth, or i don't know i'm just rambling here. I'm terrible at making descisions.

Nieninque, i think that riddles can be used no matter what we end up having the keys attracted to. Perhaps the keys can be hollow and have a piece of paper inside with the riddle leading to the next key?
Ok, I think we are agreed that Umeatur(or whatever) left clues in the form of riddles somewhere. But we're disagreeing on other things. Time to Vote!

1. The keys are: A.Gems B.Statues C.Shaped like door keys D.Other

2. The riddle/clues are located: A.On the walls of the big cavern B.One is on the walls of the cavern, and then they lead you step by step to all seven C.Other

3. The keys are attuned to: A.Specific objects that were around way back then B.Species that were around then C.Places that were around then D.Elements/Combinations of elements E.Other

4. The name of the evil guy who scattered the keys and released the Mist is: A.Umeatur B.Other

Um, I think that's it. If I forgot something please make your own ballot. And please vote on these, we need to figure this out!

I think the idea of each of us making up a riddle is a good one. It will add more to the story than if everyone knows all the answers. Plus, if Eriu, Grubhosh, and Liadan make they're way back here, we'd have six people. Lady_of_the_stars would make seven, so we'd have the perfect number! Of course that is an if...

EDIT: If you pick Other on something please give another option.

#1. C. This way we can plug them into a door in the cave and all seven keys will open it. It can lead us to another riddle to find the master key or the master key will be inside or it will lead us to the bad guy or whatever... its cool on whatever. My choice is A though.

#2. B/C Each new Riddle is found in the place of the key that a another riddle has led you too. I don't know if that is what you meant by B.

#3. A B and C. can be combinations and they can have different objects from differen't things/places/etc....

#4. A

oh no, it's a descision. I hate these. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

1) C
2) B
3) A?
4) A

for number three, i think A, objects, but riddles like that could be hard for others to guess, there's so many objects to choose from.

Okay, I'm not exactly sure what is going on here, but I will continue to read all the posts. I will also try and find a good name for Umeatur. Perhaps the company could be lured to my singing- a light in the ever-encroaching darkness? Also, someone please describe to me this "tunnel", aren't we in a ravine? Oh, and I do like the Morgoth idea, though I'm not too keen on the history of Umeatur or the keys...

Hmmmm...now that I'm thinking, instead of some Riddle scribbled of the carvern walls, perhaps these riddles can be some sort of Ancient prophecy, (sort of like Isildur's Bane) brought by a dream, or some sort of messenger etc.

Thanks, Aduial. Maybe you should pop in here every month or two to see how we're doing? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Lady_of_the_Stars, we're glad to have you here, but you seem to be confused on a few things. The majority of the group is now in a tunnel, as you'd know if you read the summary in the first post carefully. Umeatur left the riddles because he's so secure in his superiority, and everyone else's inferiority, that he truely believes that no one else can figure out his riddles, so when people find out what he's done they will despair even more. By the way, would you mind voting on the four questions, please?

Ok, I'm not very well schooled in the backhistory to LoTR, as I've mentioned in a previous post. So far, the keys are apparently going to be linked to things that were around when Morgoth was. I don't know a lot about that time period, so would one of you mind making up a list of like 10-12, or more if you can, places/things from that time period? That way we can have a list to choose from. Please?

Right, well, you probably know just about as much as I do, as I started the Silmarillion but never finished it. I know Aduial has, I can consult her, but Nieninque, unless I'm mistaken, hasn't read it either. Lady of the Stars?

Oh yeah, I've read it! Took me forever to understand, but I think I've finally got it. I've also read the Unfinished Tales, after I had read the series I just couldn't get enough I suppose. The books really are fascinating, and you all should take the time to read them. Amazing pieces of Literature.

Ashlei, I understand that this Umeatur is very arrogant, but why even give your enemies the slightest chance of prevailing? Umeatur has survived all these years as a master of evil without being detected or slayed, so obviously he has got to be pretty clever, there must be one thing he overlooked, though, something....

Oh, and how can I enter "The Mist" thread, what options are available to me?

Thanks

~Ariel

I haven't read the Simarillion. Iavasel you are right. I am unsure of anything that you could find when Morgoth was around. I am so sorry. I am not much help am I? Sorry you people.

Lady of the Stars, You can probabaly enter though a side tunnel from the main tunnel and bump into us. You could say you were confused by the mist and what not and the tell us a bit about the keys. It doesn't really matter. Just make an entrance hehe. Thats all that matters.

Ok, um, I am officially out of ideas. I haven't read the Silm, though I keep meaning to...oh, well. I think I've taken this story as far as I personally can at the moment. Lady_of_the_Stars, Grubhosh (welcome back, by the way, I'm very glad to see you) would one of you run with this please? I'm cool with whatever, you've seen my idea, please make it work now.

I have school starting in two days, and a wedding to drive to this weekend, so I'm not going to have major time to write for about a week or two til my routine settles down. I'm not leaving, I'm just warning you that I won't be in here every day anymore, and I don't have time to figure out the whole riddle thing. I really don't want to see this thread die, though, so I'll be in here as much as I can, and I'd really like to see someone take charge of ironing out the details, as I really don't have the time. We've seen a lot of good ideas thought up, they just need to be coalesced into a workable plot and we'll be up and running!

P.S. I just reread this post and I apologize for my overusage of the word 'really'. Sheesh! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I totally understand you, Ashlei. I am going to be starting school in a week so I won't be on every day. I will be on maybe every other night. I am sorry for the inconvinience that this may cause you people. The fall is always a bad season with me for TORC. I have so much going on, I never have anytime to myself.

I don't want to see this die but I would like someone to take the ideas that we have made up and put them to usage. I know there are some of you in here that have read the Silmarillion and I think you people can take it the farthest. I know the plot of the story I just think someone needs to make the written plot. I understand some of it but I am unsure in other areas. if someone can write it out so there is no confusion it will be appreciated.

Nieninque
