The Movies Forum Induction Thread - a home for n00bs!

What do you think of Tolkien on the silver screen...? Whether Bakshi, Jackson, Amazon, BBC radio play, or whoever else, come on in and discuss your reflections, opinions, and memories...

*Elderly Auntie Berhael sits in her creaking rocking chair and, smiling warmly, proffers a cup of tea to everyone who ventures into the thread*

Welcome, welcome! It's a well-acknowledged fact that we in Movies are a scary bunch of sourpusses, and we have been known to send posters crying to suck their thumbs under their beds. Fear no more, trembling n00bies! Has a Movies veteran been rude to you? Have you scratched you head repeatedly trying to get to grasp the deeper meaning of a Movies swooning thread, the underlying irony in most posts, the insults and the flaming, or the real meaning of the relationship between Gungnir and Saranthir? (I still wonder about this one, but I reckon it's mutual co-dependency, coupled with a healthy disdain of each other's football team of choice) Well fret no longer! Find here the golden, yet unspoken Rules of the Movies forum (which, conveniently, I just posted somewhere else <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>), and hopefully some posters will come and introduce themselves (or others) so you will get to know them better. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

So... to business! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Lurk for a time before you post.
Don't start threads, especially opinionated ones, unless you're certain that that particular horse hasn't been flogged to death before. And with the Search function down, that can be tricky.
Start by replying to threads, and make insightful comments. Most exigent Movies posters don't appreciate a mere "I agree" (and this is true of many other online communities - you have to make good contributions to be regarded as a good contributor)
You have to love irony and sarcasm, understand it and play along with it. If you don't like it, you'll get many information out of it but probably won't fit into the general atmosphere of the forum.
And last but not least, persist. Keep posting and when we get to know you, where you come from and what your stance is, we'll love you.

Links to Adoption threads led by and geared towards Movies posters:

*E* at your service. Here is an induction test I posted a couple of months ago.

1 Do you find it impossible to tell the difference between irony and sarcasm? Is irony just sarcasm that straightens someone out.

2 When you see the word "mod", does an image of a spotty youth wearing a parker and riding a moped come into your mind every time?

3 In the middle of an argument, do you have the ability to completely ignore all the counter-points to which you have no defence, and only reply to those to which you do?

4 When you see the phrase, "You are a ****", do you realize you are not being awarded four stars?

5 Do you realize that Bernd and Leo* need medical attention?

6 Are you geeky enough to realize that "The Lord Of The Rings" is an anagram of "Three-thirds Of Long"?

7 Do you know that a flame war and trolls have nothing to do with Amon Sul and that a TOS violation is not a complaint about Gimli’s departure from the sacred text in Moria?

8 As soon as you see in a topic heading the word "racist", "Catholic", "adaptation", "purist", "Arwen", "revisionist", "portrayal", "character", "Faramir", "comparison", "wrong" or "Bakshi", do you have a strange itchy feeling in your fingers until you have posted five times on the subject?

9 Do you have the ability to get totally riled over the idlest bit of speculation?

10 Do you have the ability in the middle of an argument thread to take your original post, change the order of the words and post it as if you are making new points? Or to say "You haven't proved anything. Give examples" if talking about logic and deduction.

If you can answer "Yes" to any of these questions, welcome to TORC. If not, bundle off. You won't fit in.

Also, once someone reaches 2,000 posts, it is customary to start a swooning thread.

Iman, I know and love you <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

And yes, this thread was inspired by Incanus's one in Talk. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> But the Movies forum's "scawy" reputation is well known and has been discussed often. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

As for introductions, let me begin with myself.

I've been around TORC since early 2001, and like a survivor of the First Age from Beleriand, I've seen many battles and fierce warriors come and go. I was here when Kelannar posted and was banned. I've seen Telemachos, Mr.bunny, Leo* and many others make their first posts (by Elbereth... I feel like Treebeard <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>). I've avoided the worst of the RvP wars and like to think of myself as a Pragmatist, although many think that's just fence-sitting. Probably. I just don't like conflict. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I enjoy humorous and parody threads, although I do try to contribute to more serious ones too, but extreme nitpicking/geeky threads about number of rings in a mithril coat of mail (or whatever) bore me.
Generally I'm of a CareBearish nature so unless you insult me you'll always be in my good books. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

EDIT - Thanks Lidless! I had a vague recollection of your thread but couldn't find it... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>

When you see the word "mod", does an image of a spotty youth wearing a parker and riding a moped come into your mind every time?

TLE, yer gonna HAVE to add a 'somewhat lumpily shaped housewife' to that category, because I can think of at least two mods who fit it (No, not Tele and Blackwood).

You know, Berhael and TLE, this is dangerously close to nurturing... dangerously close to... Ok, I'll bite. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I've been lurking here long enough, since before I signed up. In fact, it's the only forum I regularly visit, apart from the occasional foray, mostly into books or collectables. I think maybe it's about time I join in.

I mean, of course this forum isn't scary! As if! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0> We all know that it's really filled with the most delightful posters, just a pile of lovable widdle fluffy bunny wabbits really (though some have big teeth and sharp claws...). Ok, I think I'm ready, bring it on baby! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Besides, it's fandom which is truly frightening. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>

Alright. I have been lurking on this board for quite some time and this thread finally gave me the courage to sign up. I find that the discussions on this board can get quite heated which makes it all the more interesting, especially since I disagree much of the time! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I'm looking forward to spewing out my hoity-toity views and getting to know everyone.
And what is this fandom you speak of? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
(not here for even 5 seconds and I'm already editing my posts!)

Don't tell Bernd.

I am NiennaSorrowing. You can call me NiennaSorrowing. If you're really, really polite, I'll let you call me Nienna. Only people who have been around here at least a year, or have been banned at least once (or are smashingly good-looking) get to call me "sweetie".

I'm a rather rabid purist, which means I think PJ is wrong. If PJ said Faramir was good and noble and kind, I'd think he was... ok, so I wouldn't think he was wrong in that case. But I'd try hard to!!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

I also think all revisionists are wrong, because they're nothing more than slobbering PJ apologists.

If you're new here (unless you're smashingly good-looking like thedaimonlucifer), don't talk to me. You haven't earned that privalege. If you even have ever entertained thoughts about swooning (unless it be for the Brothers Gondorian, or maybe occasionally Eomer), don't post a thread where I can see it. If you ever agree with Bernd (unless you're Vynannicas_boobfies), don't come near my habitual places of abode.

And whatever you do, don't post redundant threads in the Language Forum!!!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0>

Thank you. Wrong, but a clever guess.

I am awed and humbled - Nienna and Whistler have posted in my thread! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0>
Newbies, these are two of the bestest veterans of TORC - read their threads, marvel, and learn. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> People like them know their Tolkien and what they're talking about; except when Nienna disses Revisionists, some of whom, like my friend and knight Iavas are sweeties, really - but I know she has a soft spot for him so I forgive her! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Thanks for the addenda Bernd! Theyre very useful rules which even I abide by. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Mammo dearest! ((((((hugs))))) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Thanks for dropping by!

Elf-princessButtercup... your username suggests you like The Princess Bride apart from Tolkien - good choice, and it shows that you appreciate postmodern irony as well as good old classic fantasy. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Still, it's a sweet name and it might act like a lightning rod for certain posters around here, who are known to have a penchant for cantankerousness and foaming at the mouth at sweet newbies. Bad, bad oldies! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif"border=0> Don't heed them, darling - post away your intelligent and articulate views. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

For all newbies generally - if you feel lost, drop by the Adoptions forum, there are all kinds of wonderful people around who specialize in "adopting" newbies, i.e. teaching them the ropes and being generally wonderful when an oldie has been nasty etc. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> For those who are attracted to the Movies Forum I recommend most heartily Auntie Ethel's adoption thread; Alys, Mammo and Ateelah's MAAMA; or *E*V*E*N*S*T*A*R*'s thread. Those are all adoption "agencies" managed by Movies posters (and some of the best TORCERS IMHO) <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Elfstar, thanks for your comments - it's actually "Snowstorm: Hannibal and his army crossing the Alps" by JMW Turner (early 19th century). It's one of my favourite paintings (as Whistler knows, I'm writing a thesis on him) and the poem he wrote to accompany it contains the line "the fierce archer of the downward year" which has been my signature here at TORC for a long time. Glad that you like it; and good point about Sauron! I'd never thought about that, but now that you mention it, it looks really appropriate! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> (what do you know, now I'll expect PJ to depict Sauron's downfall like that... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>)

EDITED to add a (((hug))) for InnocentEvil! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Well, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only n00bie delurking. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Thanks for the welcome Berhael. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Yes I do find fandom a little scary. I mean, it can be quite entertaining at times, and even I suffer from my own inner 'fangirl', but some of it's enough to give you nightmares! The day I start saying things like 'Elijah's just soooo FINE, he's a trillion times hotter then 'insert name' whos like SoOoO LAME and UgLy!!! U can't luv HIM, ewwwww!!!!1' or change my name to something like LeGyIsKeWl, please shoot me. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

Ornendil, yes, exactly! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
