The Big List of the best "Books" threads - Suggest

Postby scirocco » Sun Apr 06, 2003 5:50 am

This is the Suggestions thread for "The Big List of the Best Books Threads". The List itself can be found by clicking on the link below, or by looking at the Announcements at the top of the Books forum.

The Big List of the best "Books" threads - the List

The List is an attempt to gather and preserve the most significant posts in the Books forum over the last few years. Those threads which have been included in the List are my own personal choice, although many have been suggested to me and I welcome new suggestions.

To be considered, threads should contain interesting, insightful and knowledgeable posts. Simply reply to this thread, preferably with the thread name and ID (that's the last five digits in the Address field in your browser), and I'll very likely add it to the List.

This is completely exeptional work, Scirocco! I have no thread to add in but I just want to tell that it would be a bit easier to find the thread if you can add some spaces or the Head alphabet before changing the letter.(A,B,C,...)<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Very comprehensive and well done scirocco. You have included three of the 4 threads I tracked down when I saw the title. The only one I might mention is The Creative Equivalent of the People which while short includdes some, IMHO, useful reflections on how Tolkien's mythos compares to those of the "real" world. The only change I might consider is finding some way to list more than one thread under a question. Surely there have been more than one useful discussion of, say, Norse mythology.

Thanks a bunch for this list!

Thanks, kkokon and Eluchil, I've now updated the list with alphabetic separators (I think this is what you meant, kkokon) and will add Arphy's thread to the list tomorrow.

I recognise the difficulty with posting multiple threads on the same topic. I guess within the fairly simple structure I've created we will just have to put up with the same keywords for multiple threads. Perhaps I'll just be really selective, make an editorial decision, and only post the one I like best! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I will make good use of this thread and look forward to checking into all of the links.

I'm very impressed, scirocco. Thank you for taking on such a daunting task.

It must have something to do with the accidental deletion of all those threads, but several of the links (14 by my count) open a thread with no posts. I don't really know how one goes about fixing that problem, or I would do it myself. If you or anyone else who does know how that works would like to take care of it, I did write down the names of all the disembodied threads. Rather than take up space posting them all here, you can email me, and I'll send you the list. Or you could tell me how to do it myself. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Again, excellent work! I already have a few in mind to add; just need to find them.

Thanks daesul, please check your email. Most frustrating, as several previously working threads seem to have disappeared. Is this a common occurrence? Maybe they'll reappear?

I have also noticed that some early threads seem to have lost their titles, although the thread content is still intact (e.g the Blue Wizards thread).

scirocco, this is a wonderful resource <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. I wish I'd got into the habit of bookmarking threads, there are quite a few I've been unable to find when I want them, and a couple of mine have disappeared from the search index.

This thread might solve both problems you've encountered. The Mods are archiving threads which haven't been posted to for over a year, which might explain the disappearing threads. I assume the "archive" will be accessible when it's done (I certainly hope so!).

In the process of doing this, several thousand threads accidentally lost their titles (which have been replaced by numbers, as in the Blue Wizards thread) and original forum (they've all been moved to the "Accidentally Deleted Threads" forum). You should post to the above thread with the name and location of these threads, if you happen to know it, so they can be restored.

Some more for your consideration (<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> forgive me choosing one I've started, it's the contributions of others that makes it worthwhile)

The Darkness - how deep?
Veiled Vistas
Sea-longing

Thank you all for the suggested threads. I have also had the greatest of pleasure in re-reading them. I have added many of them to the list.

I have also removed the links which no longer work (thanks for checking, daesul) - it would seem that these threads are gone for ever, unfortunately. Hello Scirocco.Thank you for the excellent idea...this thread is a gem!

I would like to add a suggestion: it is the "Frodo's kitchen: A Safe Haven for Devotees of the Books" thread (threadid 48833)This is a thread devoted to hobbitlore and it is the longest non trivia thread in Books. In its long pages and monster posts I think there can be found exceptional insights on a great number of issues that conscern the hobbits, the quest and not only.

Thank you again

naias

List has been updated accordingly with the following threads, including (sigh), an Elves-with-pointy-ears one.

Father-figures in LOTR
Condescending to the hobbits
Do Hobbits play chess?
The ring's temptation of Sam
Do Elves REALLY have pointy ears?!
Debate over the origin of the Witch-King
Saruman and Aragorn
Elves dont sleep. but the maiar do?
Why not use the eagles to fly the ring to Mt Doom?
The elven swords…
Ilúvatar's gift to Men
The Names of Gandalf
Gandalf and his lack of magic...
How did the Valar Err?
Gollum/Smeagol Analysis and Theory

Paging
scirocco,
-Rómestámo-,
Wilko185,
Eluchil,
ArPharazon
and to anyone else who has detailed knowledge of Tolkiens works. I have a question which I have asked inRing, in Numenor in my post dated Apr/18/2003 12:47 PM. I have searched through the listed "Ring" threads and have not seen this discussed before and I really do not know if the questions I have are worthy of a new seperate thread.

Could one of you ( or all of you, which would be even better <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>) please take a look at my question(s) in that post. I know the answers might get into some opinions which is OK because that is what I want plus any references which you could provide which might give me some answers.

Thanks again to scirocco for maintaining this fine thread which I am thoroughly enjoying and to all who have taken the time to provide the links to all of these wonderful threads. I really do appreciate it.

FT
