Pull out your pack and head on down to the Prancing Pony for some great Role Playing (try to stay in character)!

Hello all! I’m just starting a new RP. I have played but never run one of my own before. Fortunately, Elaine_of_Astolat is the coauthor, so I won’t be too lost.

The story is set in Gondor around the ninth year of the Fourth Age. Even after a decade of rebuilding, King Elessar is still working to restore his Kingdom to its former glory. The War of the Ring destroyed much of the lands of the West, and many noble families perished. Consequently, the current system of records is a mess. No one is quite sure who owns what or how much tax they should be paying for it.

To prevent corruption, Elessar is sending out companies of scholars across all his lands. They will make new records, determine ownership and settle minor disputes.

Our tale follows one such company that journeys to the Blackroot Vale (a location notable for holding Gondor entrance of the Paths of the Dead and the Stone of Erech).

Now before your eyes glaze over, if they haven’t already, I should mention that this story would not be about statistics. Nor will much, if any, time be spent counting goats. That would probably bore me faster than it would bore you.

We have planned intrigue, corruption, power struggles and battles.

In fact, we’ve planned most of the plot. We hope that it will resemble an Old Pony RP. We would love for you to join us.

Now, to characters:
We will start in Minas Tirith, so everyone will have to be in or near the City at the beginning. I’m just writing what I think would be good to have along. If you have another idea that you think would fit in, that’s great too.

Since there are so many groups going out at the same time, mercenaries would have to be hired to protect some of them. My main character, Mucca, leads the group protecting this company. He would think it a safe job (who would bother to attack the King’s scholars?) and bring his Lady, Elaine, along for the ride. I might also play a few secondary characters and the odd bad guy (to keep things going in the right direction).

I think we still need a head wrangler, some of Mucca’s mercenaries and a bunch of minions (I imagine that a number of these will end up being background characters that everyone controls). There would also be some locals to show us around.

As I said, if you think of something else, go for it.

Now I’m a bit of a purist (love the movies, prefer to write in book cannon), so could everyone please be things that already exist in Tolkien’s world. Please do not drag Unicorns, pixies, dark elves and other such fictional creatures into the story.

While we are on the subject of Elves, I might remind everyone that this is set in the Forth Age. Most High Elves have sailed West by now. If you are such an Elf still in Middle-Earth, you should have a good reason for it.

I love quirky, original characters. Let’s face it, the beautiful yet invincible warrior maid with a troubled past has been done a million and one times, as has the assassin with the heart of gold. I’m not ruling these characters out, just making a plea for at least a new twist.

So anyway, if you’ve made it through all that and you still want to join, Welcome!

I’m not big on long character bios, but a brief description would be great.

I’ll edit each one into this post as you join.

So far, we have:

Muccamukk [Mucca] ret Selom
General: Mucca is a Southron who fought on the side of Darkness in the War of the Ring. Since then he has lived in the west. He is the captain of a company of twelve mercenaries called the Black Dragons. Appearance: Mucca is not tall for a man and lightly built. His face is oval with weathered red-brown skin and black eyes, slightly slanted. His hair is black and usually kept in a braid that falls just below his shoulders. There is a white scar running from a little to the right of the center of his forehead to his right ear (at the expense of the tip of his right eyebrow).

Daerín of Morthond
General: a twelve-year-old scholar’s apprentice. He was born in Morthond but has lived in Minas Tirith since he was eight. He is quite out going and has a habit of sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong.
Appearance: Despite spending most of his time inside, his skin is tanned and his dark brown hair has been bleached to a sandy blond. He has a round face with hazel eyes.

Elaine of Astolat
General: Eternally devoted lady of Sir Muccamukk, Elaine hails from the village of Astolat in Rohan. Daughter of the local baron, Pelles, she has been raised a Lady of leisure and in her 20 years has done very little travelling… and anything else remotely exciting for that matter until she met Mucca.
Appearance: 5’6”, average build. Her hair is a dull ash-blonde colour, wavy, and hangs about an inch below her shoulders. Eyes are a blue-grey. She’s pleasant enough to look at, but nothing remarkable –nice smile, a few laughter lines around her eyes.

Cirion, scribe of Minas Tirith:
General: Aged in his late forties, he has always served the Stewards and now serves the King in minor clerical capacities. He has lived in Minas Tirith all his life, and has never before left. But the Court Scribe has ordered him to travel as a record keeper, and much as he dislikes the idea of travelling he follows his orders.
Appearance: Tall, dark haired, dark grey eyes, slightly awkward and stooping from long hours at a desk.

Fernleigh Took of Great Smials
General: Fern is a Hobbit lass engaged just coming of age and the Fallohide wanderlust *calls* to her so she sets off travelling and takes up an available position as 'cook' to a company of scholars.
Appearance: Tall by Hobbit standards, fair-skinned and freckled with curly brown hair and wide green eyes.

Kythe
General: A little on the sadistic side, fascinated with the notion of fear steel can put into her victims.
Appearance: A girl about fifteen, with a finely toned lithe frame, almond-shaped black eyes that have a sort of lurking menace to them, black hair that stretches to her shoulder blades. Simple white dress, black coat over, wields a common long-sword with a blade thinner than most others, due to her size and weight.

Echarion of Minas Tirith
General: Echarion is the son of a high-ranking noble of Gondor, which may account for his being given this assignment. There are stories of his wit, intelligence and bravery. Not all of them are positive. As a younger soldier during the war of the ring, he "guarded the refuges" who fled Minas Tirith. Echarion has been put in charge of this mission. He is cheerful, confident and quite impressed with being a descendant of Númenore.
Appearance: He is about six foot three, with black hair and grey eyes (of course), and a dazzling smile. He is in his late twenties. His pack is full of scrolls containing information regarding the mission.

Domurad and Dolezal
General: Two competing scholars from Minas Tirith. After long periods of not work during the war, the two jumped at Elessar's offer to travel his kingdom and renew the records. Dolezal’s studies have specialized in healing whereas Domurad’s knowledge is more general. The two have a love/hate relationship and are often jealous of each other.
Appearance: Domurad is in his late 40s, short and beginning to bald. Dolezal is a young, attractive man of Númanórean descent

Firiel
General: Firiel was born to a well to do merchant of Dol Amroth, and his bride from Minas Tirith. Though she spent the first years of her life in Dol Amroth, a family scandal on her father's side resulted in her removal to Ithilien when she was sixteen. There her eldest cousin, Morion, a young widower raised her. He introduced her to her current life, that of a ranger. When she reached adulthood, she aided Morion in restoration of the war-torn country. She is quiet but amiable, a bit reserved.
Appearence: She is nice enough to look at, but more striking than beautiful, really. Her features are typically Numenorean, with dark hair, grey eyes and a tall, lithe figure. She is about twenty-seven years old.

Argo/Argonath
General: Given this unusual name by his mother, both a great lover and teller of stories, he prefers to be known simply as Argo. His family has farmed the vales of Morthond for generations, but since the death of his parents and the loss of his family land, he has worked as a hired hand on many of the farms in the country. He was too young to fight in the war, and longs for the courage and valour he has heard in stories to break the monotony of daily farm life.
Appearance: He is tall and tanned from years of field labour and is much stronger than his slender frame suggests. His hair is gold-coloured but lacks much brilliance. It is usually kept long enough to hide his deep grey eyes and the quiet features of his face.

I'll admit the idea intrigues me because it is different. But if you've already decided on most of the plot then why should I join? What would be the fun in acting out an RP that's already been planned? RPing is about a bunch of different people getting together with a presented situation and some characters and seeing what happens, isn't it? Every player is supposed to have equal influence over how the plot turns out. If you left more room for creativness on the part of the other players, then I might consider joining.

That's not really true. A lot of very, very good threads I've been in have been planned out from the start by the person who started the thread -- most of the problems I've seen in threads stem largely from a lack of an idea of what to do next. I'm assuming Muccamukk doesn't have all of the details planned out, and is willing to alter things based on character interaction, which seem to be the things worrying you. Additionally, I've posted with him, and I can heartily recommend his own role-playing abilities. (Unfortunately, I don't have the time to join myself. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>)

I apologize. Having come from an RP in which one character dominated the others and restricted creativity, I tend to be a little wary of it happening again. But asaris' word is good enough for me. If you tell us a little more about your idea then I would sincerely consider joining.

I realize that both Old Pony and Co-op RPs have their attractions, this time I decided to write the former. I have noticed that many co-op RPs (where every character is equal and there is no real GM) that the story tends to stagnate. I enjoy the ones with a master plan much better. I am not saying that every little thing is planned out. What will happen will change based on what the characters do. But there are certain events that will happen. There is a mystery to solve and so on. I just don't everyone wondering about looking for something to do.

undomiel: DOn't worry about it. I always want to know what I'm getting into as well. I can't tell you a whole lot more because I don't want to give away the plot, but we will put up more info later

asaris: <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Thanks. Greetings all!
I quite happily take on the title and responsibility of coauthor for this RP, however I should like to send many congratulations to Muccamukk who has been the primary instigator of it all. I've just thrown in an idea here and there <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

In regards to what has already taken place in this thread, let me also stress that the RP has not been planned down to every footstep of the journey. And what has been planned has been done so for the active participation of members, not for the sheer power trip of stringent GM's <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Allow me to introduce myself...

Mae Govannen,

I think something that has been *somewhat* planned ahead sounds wonderful. A while back I started an RP that just died because no one had any plans to do anything so we just stood around twiddling our thumbs <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

If either/or both of you could let us know what kind of people will be setting out in the little group I could work a new character around that... Oh yes! can I join? I haven't been around TORC that long--- I still consider myself a newbie but I think I could provide some... intesting situations. Do let me know please <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Namarie,
*~Arwen

Well, let's see if you can find a place for an assassin. Don't worry, she's not the golden hearted kind... To cut everything short, she's a girl, and I mean a child by that, intrigued by the kind of terror a weapon can put into her victims. Or perhaps you could just say that she is fascinated by killing, and equally by unusual weapons. She is skilled with a whip as well, but I'd prefer to leave it's kind out until you give me the go-ahead.

One last thing: Can I join? I will inform anyone who is willing to listen about a particular bad point of mine... In the event that I do not really interact with any other characters, well, I simply disappear. I know this is kind of wrong, but I can't continue writing for a thread where I have a lack of interaction. I don't think there'll be this problem here though, so I'll just sit back and wait for an answer.

I guess I should have told you, I come from a long line of miscommunicators. No only me, but my father and his father before him<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Sorry for the confusion, Elaine<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I’ll edit next.

Nice to meet you Arwen<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I hope that answers your questions. I look forward to reading about your character. Don’t worry about it; I’m pretty much a newbie too. The more interesting situations the merrier I say.

Hello again, Tobias<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I’d be interested to see how you plan to work your character into this story. She doesn’t seem the kind of gal the King would hire. There will be lots of character interaction, I hope, but everyone should be able to function on their own as well. It’s like a story, sometimes all the characters are together, sometimes they wonder off in smaller groups or by them selves.

undomiel: How’s that look then?<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I hope that answers all your questions.

Well, there's the challenge then, isn't it? How am I going to weave an assassin into the midst of such law-abiding folks? Let me think then... Maybe I'll say that she's traveling in the same direction, and it's so convenient that such a large band of folks are headed in the same direction, and she doesn't want to waste unnecessary time by moving alone through the wilderness, and she'll follow, resulting in the natural effect that she's never going to get there, not now, nor anytime soon. Isn't that always the case?

That's a thought. Or you could already be in the town and we'd meet you there. How about you send me an e-mail? I have an idea that I don't want to discuss openly (has to do with the mystery, so it should be a surprise for everyone else). I'm muccamukk@hotmail.com

It is a very interesting concept to me, but it seems a little contradictory. Would King Elessar hire either assasins or mercenaries? I don't think he would. Especially as he has an entire army of Gondorians at his disposal.

Ummm... I think you read me a little wrong there undomiel. I was actually going more for the can-I-tag-along kind, rather than simply claim that I was hired. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

undomiel: You are right. I very much doubt that Elessar would hire assassins (or any other such person).

I'm putting mercenaries in to make the mix a little more interesting. My rational for it is that the Army of Gondor probably doesn't have enough strength to guard every single party. It is busy clearing the riff raff out of Arnor, fighting the Haradrim/Corsairs/Easterlings and guarding more important parties. They probably don't have the time. Plus it took major damage in the War and many resources are being put to rebuilding infrastructure. I think that it would be cheaper just to hire some people for a month or so than to rush a bunch of troops through training.

Plus, well, I want to use my character Mucca for this one<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> His company (a small one of only twelve men) is not the go out and kill people type. It is usually hire for guard duty. Besides Mucca and Elaine come as a pair<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

EDIT: I can't see this thread working without at least five people (counting Eliane and I). Would any lurkers please join? Please<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hey I know that your not into long character things but give this one a read. I've never written one in this format so tell me if its okay. Oh and by the way can I join??

Kaliwen

Kaliwen was an elf born in Rivendell under the high majestic roves of eleven halls. She lived there for decades until one day an errand brought her to Rohan. There by chance she met a mortal man whom she both loved and hated. They were seen together often and she did not return to Rivendell for many years. She fell in love with the man and they lived in Rohan for a decade never leaving each others sight. Bound with love they thrived until one day Kaliwen’s lover fell sick. He died in the short months of the winter and the eleven mistress was left alone to care for their only child. A son. Kaliwen fell into depression and her son was sent to live with her eleven family. Embarrassed and ashamed of not being able to take care of her own son and abandoning her family she never returned to Rivendell for her son. Kaliwen hid in the hills wishing to die. Though she tried many times for some reason the dagger never hit the right spot and the poison was never strong enough. Each time she tried to commit suicide, she would recover. After years of trying to kill herself she finally realized that maybe she had a purpose on this earth. Kaliwen left her home in the hills of Rohan and trained to be a healer. When she had completed her training she decided to go back to her homeland. As she traveled back to Rivendell she wondered what she would find when she got there. After many days of traveling Kaliwen reached Rivendell only to find it deserted. She wept bitterly wishing many times she had come back to see her family, that she had kept her son with her. Then after a day of collecting her old things from the great halls she met someone. A tall elven male had been following her ever since she had arrived.
“Who are you?” she had whispered ready to fight if necessary.
“Are you Kaliwen?”
“Who wants to know?” Kaliwen was wary from sleepless nights and she just felt like going home and having her family back.
“I am Ramoud, your son.”
Kaliwen wept and they had a joyous reunion. Ramoud explained where the rest had gone, into the west on ships never to return. Ramoud had refused to go along, only having faith that his mother would come for him. Kaliwen and Ramoud lived in Rivendell for a few years until one day Kaliwen woke up and Ramoud was gone. She searched the whole day for him and only found him in the next months to come. His body was on the banks of the river. He had drowned though Kaliwen didn’t know how it had happened. Once again Kaliwen was quickly drowning in depression and once again she attempted suicide many times though her attempts always failed. Then one day she woke up and noticed there was a presence in the air. A voice inside her head told her to run, so she did. She left her things behind and the memories of her dead son. She wanders about looking to use her skills as a healer wherever she is needed.
She carries an elvish sword that she found among the left belongings of her family. She shares her past with little and is hard to be friends with considering her bitterness and hard outer core. Kaliwen has long blonde ringlets that reach her waist. Usually her hair is in a French braid. Her eyes are green with a sad longing in them. She rarely makes eye contact with anyone so many people do not see the sadness hidden within her.
Um... okay. The point of the short bios is to just give the basic info for the other posters. If your character has a secret past, it should remain just that, secret. That makes the story more realistic. The stuff in the short bios is general knowledge.

A few questions. If Kaliwen is so unhappy in ME, why didn't she sail West? (There are still plenty of ships left.) Why couldn't she kill herself? (Does she have some sort of "magic" protecting her?) What does she have to do with the quest? Will she be a member of the company? Doing what? Why would Elessar hire her. Are there any happy elf maids in ME?

Could you edit that down into something resembling what Elaine and I have?

EDIT: Tobias: now that we've figured that out, do you want to add your bio to the list?

Muccamuk - this one sounds interesting. My usual characters, Alfirin and Nessamelda won't fit in here (Alfririn is a scribe but wouldn't work for the King in a pink fit), so I'll have to make up a new one. It seems like you are short of characters to guard, so that seems to be a good place to start.

Cirion is in his late forties/early fifties. His father was Varion, keeper of the Records in Denethor's time (which makes him Alfirin's older brother). He could never match his sister's quick wits and facility with language - and never had his father's favour, for Varion idolised his clever daughter - but after her disgrace and exile, (she was seduced by an under-age Duke, who persuaded her to a secret marriage - on the young Duke's death his family had the incovenient widow and her even more inconvenient child exiled) Cirion plodded along. He took his place at the walls defending the city during the time of the war, hated the bloodshed, and violence, but felt strongly his duty to the city - he is of Numenorean descent, and while proud of it, this pride has never turned to arrogance (unlike his sister). Now that Elessar is King he would be glad to serve in any capacity that he can. What he thinks he is best at is counting goats.....but he may have hidden talents......(Alfirin has a skill in drawing - in her the Numenorean trait of farsight/second sight has come out in the ability to draw things as they Are rather than as they Seem...I'll have to come up with a trait for Cirion)

He is quite tall, dark haired, slightly stooped - never married - he doesn't really think that he has time for that sort of thing. Aquiline nose, dark grey eyes, untidy dark hair, a little short-sighted. He can ride, but like most men of Gondor prefers not to. He can use a sword, but would rather wield a pen. His skills as a scribe are stricly mundane - he writes in a neat hand that is legible but lacks the grace and elegance that would make him useful as a court scribe. So he is a clerk....

Nessamelda: Welcome<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> That sounds good. Do you want to condense that into something to put into the first post? I'm not sure how soon we'll get started, I'll let you know. I think we still need a few more people.

Alaklainiel: I'm sorry if I came across as rude. I don't mean to be. I think that your character is fine, but was unclear as to how you planned to fit her into the story. Sad to see you go. Perhaps we can play together some other time.

Ok - how's this

Cirion, scribe of Minas Tirith:

Aged- in his late forties, he has always served the Stewards and now serves the King in minor clerical capacities. He has lived in Minas Tirith all his life, and has never before left. But the Court Scribe has ordered him to travel as a record keeper, and much as he dislikes the idea of travelling he follows his orders.
Appearance - tall, dark haired, dark grey eyes, slightly awkward and stooping from long hours at a desk.

My email is in my profile - as I'm in Australia, don't be surprised if I take a while to answer due to time zone issues! I also use Yahoo IM (ID: Nessamelda2)

Greetings Tobias & Nessamelda! I look forward to interacting with your characters (well... perhaps it won't quite be so much fun to meet an assassin... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> ).

Nessamelda - I know the feeling <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I'm from Australia too.

Hello Mucca
... I promised to have a serious look and here I am <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
Well, seems you're assembling a fine crew. Did I hear you mention you might need a ranger? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> If so then that just might be a 'job' for Alandriel.

As long as we can take things at a nice and easy pace I'm in if you will have me along.

Alandriel: Numenorean, appears about in her 30's, ranger. I won't drag all her 'past' into this. If you want to check further details, you can always look up the bio page (link in my sig)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to join the thread (just need to make sure I'll have the time to commit). I'll probably take the scholar and the healer. I usually like to play two characters. So I'll be back to post some very short bios later. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Mae Govannen:
Well, that took me long enough <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I was trying to come up with a character I haven't played before so...

Fernleigh Took of Great Smials
General: Fern is a Hobbit lass engaged just coming of age and the Fallohide wanderlust *calls* to her so she sets off travelling and takes up an available position as 'cook' to a company of scholars.
Appearance:Tall by Hobbit standards, fair-skinned and freckled with curly brown hair and wide green eyes.

I hope this is all right with you Muccamukk and Elaine <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Do let me know if any changes need to be made.

Namarie,
*~Arwen

Thanks to Muccamukk for helping me out with how my character fits into this whole mix, and I'll post my character profile now:

Appearance: A girl about fifteen, with a finely toned lithe frame, almond-shaped black eyes that have a sort of lurking menace to them, black hair that stretches to her shoulder blades. Simple white dress, black coat over, wields a common longsword with a blade thinner than most others, due to her size and weight.

Personality: A little on the sadistic side, fascinated with the notion of fear steel can put into her victims.

Yep, that should sum everything up.

I'm on board. This will be my second real RP, and the first in the Tolkien world setting (unless you count my friends and I playing "The Three Hunters Run Across Rohan and Kill Orcs" when I was nine<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>).

Mucc, I'll touch base with you regarding my character before posting here, but I expect it will be pretty much as we have previously discussed.

A 15 year old assasin weilding a chain whip? Sorry, count me out of this RP.

Hi,

I'm interested in the form your RP is taking. I've tried to start a couple of RPs using something other than the usual "co-op" form as you called it and had varying degrees of success. But I definitely agree with you about the tendancy of regular RP's to stagnate and wander and eventually drift off without ever coming ot a conclussion.

Very unsatisfying.

So, does the "Old Pony" RP simply mean that the story follows a pre planned outline or is there more to it than that?

Was this the usual form that RP's followed at one time in the Pony?

Thanks
Nessamelda: Okay, there you are. Ya can't get out of this now laddie. Mawa ha ha ha... cough sorry, disregard above.

Alandriel: That sounds great, I'd love to have Alandriel around for this one. I was thinking the Ranger position would be that of an observer. Someone personally appointed by Elessar to make sure the rest of us are honest. Does that sound good to you? Btw: this is set about fourteen years before Rain on Bree.

Arwen_Sol: that sounds good. Great to have you. I'll edit that into the first post now. Good to have representative of the little people aboard.

Tobais: I'll e-mail on that one.

Elmtree: Nice to see you<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> What you sent sounds great.

undomiel: I’m sorry to hear that<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

GlassHouse: Hey, mate you've been around here way longer than I have. I imagine that you'd know better. This is just how I understood the concept. I think that the Old Pony term comes more from Erinhue, SNL and the other oldbies lamenting about the good old days of TORC. I think that it also means a planned RP. Are you interested in joining?
