OOC - - Angmar Rising! -- A Word Aside

Pull out your pack and head on down to the Prancing Pony for some great Role Playing (try to stay in character)!

Postby Gilfein » Tue Jul 29, 2003 12:07 pm

This is the word aside thread for “Angmar Rising!”, a continuation of a storyline started in the Lucky Fortune Inn thread in the Welcome Forum.

An Invitation: All RPGers are welcome! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> This is an invitation to any and all who are interested in participating in an adventure thread. NOTICE: This is an action/adventure RPG. While romance is a part of the action, it should not be the driving force, we want to keep the action moving. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> If you are interested in adventuring, and perhaps risking dying in the adventure, please do not hesitate to join in. Though I will not make it harsh, or particularly lethal, please remember this one tenet: Read carefully, think before you write, read and think some more, then post! Simple enough!

A Request: Anyone interested in participating in this thread are requested but by no means required to e-mail me your e-mail address at the link below regarding story line questions, personal character information that you do not want generally known, etc. You can also use this Word Aside thread. This way we can keep in touch if anyone needs to go away for a while (Work, vacation, etc.) and keep the main story line thread clean. Also, this way, I or one of the others so designated by you can act for you, (and keep your character alive…an important point when one is otherwise occupied!), if you cannot post for a while but want to continue to play along. The e-mail link is hylinasylum@earthlink.net. You can address it to Gilfein, or Doug Hylin, whichever is easier for you! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> In addition, anyone interested in participating are asked to introduce their characters/ideas here. Be assured that personal e-mail addresses and character information will be kept strictly confidential . I have been a programmer/analyst since 1978 and know how important information security is. I have merely requested this information to aid in progression of the story line and to keep the main thread clean of clutter.

One Final Plea! I am asking politely that anyone who is interested in adventuring on this thread, please consider becoming a Premier Members of TORC. It will help to pay the bills and keep sites like this operating for the enjoyment of all! If you are already members of this elite group, Muchas Gracias!, Domo Arigato!, Tak for De!, Mahalo Nui Loa!, Thank You Very Much! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif"border=0>

It'll probably involve a temporary split up and meet where Lith oringinally came out onto the road. I'm still extremely confused on some stuff.....

You told us that is was an action/adventure thing and all you haven't really said what this RP is about. because I keep reading over your first post both in IC and OOC and I'm lost.

And second are we suposed to post our charas here or let them unfold in the story??

Aranel- If it's any help with the character part of your question...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I let my character unfold if she/he is well known to most of the posters in the thread. Other than those occurences, I post a very breif sketch and bring out all the details and history in the posts.

ex of breif sketch

Name:
Race:
Age:

Appearance, Skills, Weapondry, Transport: These should really be elaborated on with verbs in the posts <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Not very detailed in OOC bios.
History: might be strictly post material depending on what you like.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

OOC Ok, here is the “brief” character history of Gilfein. Please see the character archives in a few days for a more thorough explanation!

Name and Title Gilfein the Green, Chronicler of the West.

Race Istari…in other words, Maia!

Age Come on! He is Istari, a Maia! What difference does his age matter? No, but to answer the question, Gilfein has been around since the beginning, in other words, before the First Age! His chief duties were to write down the entire history of Middle Earth so future races would have some knowledge of what came before. Unfortunately for him, now he has become embroiled in events that are taking him away from his main task, but in some respects, supercede any other duties as the fate of Middle Earth is now in the balance once again!

Appearance Gilfein is tall, at least 6’ 6”. He wears robes of many hued greens, chiefly emerald or beryl, the “elf-stone“. He has thick eyebrows that stick out beyond the brim of his green hat. And, like all Istari, he has a long, grey beard. His eyes though, are sea grey, and look like the ocean just after a storm. But when angered, lightning literally flashes across and out from them so the underside of his hat is lit as if from an unearthly light. He is lean, but muscular, the muscles being “real-world”, sinewy, strong and well formed. He has boots of fine leather and bears a long sword in an elaborately made sheath. He has a strong red horse, a roan from Rohan. Yea, it is one of the foals from Shadowfax and as such is one of the Mearas! No one but Gilfein may ride him unless Gilfein himself allows it and the horse agrees to bear the extra rider. His saddle and harness is plain and unadorned save for a single silver disk upon the pommel that has on it the image of the two trees of Valinor.

Weapons and Armor Gilfein bears only two weapons. One is his sword, “Laimacil” was forged back before the Goblin Wars of Gondolin. The blade is leaf shaped, with almost a stiletto point to it and quillons shaped as ivy vines curling back around the hand forming almost a basket-hilt. The pommel is oval shaped with a large beryl or elf-stone set in it. When enemies are near, it glows with a soft green light while emerald green flames flicker around the edges, the intensity varying with the degree and proximity of threat. The sheath of this sword is intricately woven, for woven it is, of some strange vine from before Gondolin that has a virtue to keep the sword, as long as it is kept in the sheath, from breaking, and protecting the wearer from harm. As far as armor goes, tho no one knows it, Gilfein wears a hauberk of Mithril Mail, made for him by the Dwarves of the Iron Hills for a service he did for them more than a millennium ago. He wears this over a thin tunic of leather deep beneath his robes, but he needs it not. As the one Istari charged with chronicling the history of the West, there is only one weapon, one sword that only the Valar hold that could shed his blood. There is no blade, no weapon forged in Middle Earth that can harm him, though he does not often share this knowledge. Only three people know this, and only two know it for truth. One is the brother of a fine Rohirrim maiden who thinks her brother died in the War of the Ring. One is his brother in the order, Radagast, and the third, tho he does not believe it , is the bouncer in the Lucky Fortune Inn. Gilfein does not often draw his blade completely, but when he does, woe be to the foe on the other end! The other "weapon" he has is his staff. It is made of ash with a beryl set in it's headpiece. The jewel has been imbued with the light and power of the Two Trees of Valinor. Verily, it is a gem that Fëanor had experimented on before he forged the three Silmarliil back in the depths of time. It holds the light of the trees and when invoked, is almost instant death to the minions of evil. Gilfein is more apt to use his staff than his sword, but both are deadly in their own respects.

Miscellaneous Information Apart from what is listed above, he carries a regular knapsack that has his various oddments and personal equipment in it, as well as a great bag that has the various books, scrolls and tomes he is working on at the moment, along with his supply of inks, quills, leaf, parchment, etc. There are also the jewels he uses in the covers, kept in a box at the bottom of the pack.

Temperament Gilfein is quick to anger. This comes from long study of the history of Middle Earth. Sometimes it gets him into trouble, however, usually it is with good cause that he displays his power. But, he also has a softer and kinder side. If you are truthful with him, he is more inclined to let you be. However, the servants of the great evil, Melkor, and all their guises he will pursue and slay with unflinching severity. His great goal is peace throughout the lands, but, he knows, it will be a long and painful journey before this will be achieved. Because of this, and the fact that he has lived through 3 ages of the world in their entirety, he is old and tired to look at. Worn before his time, but with no end in sight, he keeps going on to whatever end has been ordained for him. Tho he may know what it is, he won’t say, ever. To this end, there is a warning to all…don’t ever get him angry! You would not like him when he is angry! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Okay, Okay, so I got a "bit" long winded in this description. Just go with it! I do not intend to re-do it in the character archives save for copying and pasting! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>

As to your question Aranel, I am familiar with your character both from the Lucky Fortune Inn and Forgiven threads. We are on a quest, at least for now, to get thru to Rivendell, alive! Beyond that, there is an adventure waiting that holds in its grasp the fate of Middle Earth. It involves both the ancient realms of Moria and Angmar! If you are interested, please do not hesitate to post in "Angmar Rising" in the Prancing Pony! I cannot reveal more of the story line without ruining it for everyone! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-devil.gif"border=0>

Yes, Key Blade. This is the OOC thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>Gilfein just seemed to want to emphasize that fact in his last post. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Might I suggest that those who want to join should read the last few pages of the Lucky Fortune Inn so they know where we are coming from with this story?

Good idea Lith, hello everyone!
I iwll be leaving Friday and get back Aug 10. I will be able to post then, but to a limited degree, I am moving on the 15th and after that, I should settle into my new home well enough to be back to 'normal' <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> . Gilfein, think we should put a condensed version of those events here? Like edited into your first post? Just a suggestion.
-WW
aka Rodrin

I really wnat to join this RP as becuz most of the RP's I'm in have turned into slow story lines more of chara past revealing stuff and action sounds good right about now.

So could someone please do what wind_walker has suggested and post a summary of what is supposed to be going on for those of use with fried brain cells such as myself.

okay 'brief history' of my character.

Name: Tal Lykouleon (Pirnce Lykouleon to some)

Age: around the age 4120 yr.s but being an immortal, he appears to be 14-15 years old.

race: ice youkai (ice demon)

hair: short, dark brown but it is giving way to his natural color of greyish-blue. (see Story below)

eyes: His eyes are light blue. But being an ice youkai, the pupil of his eyes can't be seen because they are the same color as the rest of the eye.

alliance: none as of now

weapon: He prefers the use of a sword and a magical tattoe on his right wrist called the Elethide (spirit of illusion) which he can use to create an illusion around an enemy. His ability to control ice and it's propertie also come in handy.

appearance: he stands about 5'9". His hair is unkept, but looks really nice that way. His skin, although fair by nature, is evenly a nice shade of light brown. (mostly because of the curse(see Story below))

personality: Tal's one of those, "He's really nice once you get to know him." kind of people. He's silent by nature, but you'd be surprised by all the things he thinks and doesn't say. He's not one some would trust, mostly because he never trusted the some in the first place.

clothing: black buckle-up pants with multiple belts. A cream sleeveless top and a black leather (longsleeve) jacket that stops at around his rib cage. black gloves with the figners cut off and brown leather boots. he wraps bandages from his wrists to his elbow (for some odd reason)

Story: His real name is Lykouleon and he was a prince in the mountain civilization of ice youko. But his parents were assinated when he was very young and he was taken by a mystic from his mountain home to be raised among humans. Looking quite different from humans, the mage put a spell on him to make him look like a human. But as he began to grow older and the fact we was immortal couldn't be hidden, the spell began to wear off. (It still is wearing off) He left and became a ranger, even with his young looks youkai, like elves, are immortal (as I've stated above). He changed his name to Tal. One unique thing about being an ice youko is when they cry. Their tears become tiny, glowing sphere-gems that are very rare and sought after by many. Some refer to it as glow-stone.

you like, ne?

Hello all <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> I am interested in joining an RP and I enjoyed the lead up to this in Welcome very much, but I was wondering how true to Tolkien you are going to be? Obviously some leeway has to be given but will there be lots of magic and strange races?

Not that you'll care <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> but I'm not so keen to be involved in that is to be the case <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I think we are going to pretty much stay true to Tolkien, Lysander<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>, or else potentially face locking since we are in the Prancing Pony.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Key Blade- A strange character you've got.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Well I don't think there was ever a limit on the kinds of demons there might exist though the main races are human, elf, dwarf halfling and orc.
Is he evil, since he's a demon? Or a complete outsider?
Ok, for Aranel and others, here is a brief synopsis of what has happened prior in the Lucky Fortune Inn that leads us to here. And yes, I will keep it brief, not like my "brief history"! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

Gilfein the Green is an Istari who was on a mission of rather minor import for the King Ellesar when he and his traveling companions were suddenly attacked west of Moria in Hollin. 3 of his party were killed including the son of Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth. Gilfein set out immediately to discover what was going on as the attack was directed at him, very organized, and led by a Black Uruk of Mordor. Gilfein finds his way to the Lucky Fortune Inn, where in the course of his inquiries learns to his great fear that the overall leader of the orcs is none other than the Mouth of Sauron, Lieutenant of Barad-dur and he is actively trying to capture both Gilfein and Radagast! This had terrible import for Middle Earth and all living in it. He also learned that Radagast is missing, and that the orcs from the attack were to meet near the lake at the west side of Moria. Then, during the night, Gilfein was again attacked outside the town by the woods. Many orcs were killed but a number escaped. Gilfein has decided to try to make for the haven of Rivendell asap and has enlisted the help of a ranger to guide his party to the hidden refuge.

That is where we are now. More will be revealed as the story progresses but know that there will be good adventure to be had here! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

As to the question about being true to Tolkien or just influenced by him, this is the Prancing Pony forum which is set in the world of Tolkien. We are going to be as true to his world as possible. There will be some leeway but not a whole lot. Please try to adventure as if we were still in Middle Earth, just into the 4th age and just after the events of the War of the Ring as listed in TRotK. Races are Elves, Men, Dwarves, Hobbits, Orcs/Goblins, Trolls and misc. other creatures as described in the books (Spiders, Wargs, Wolves, Bears) etc. The Beornings are real, as are Istari and Evil Sorcerers like The Mouth of Sauron. As for an Ice Demon character a suggestion would be to have him be from the Snowmen of Forochel, also called the Lossoth. They were a strange and unfriendly people, a remnant of the Forodwaith and not a whole lot is known about them. That would explain the magical tattoo and his powers. Beyond these items, let your imaginations run wild!

This looks very cool, mind if I join. I really feal like typing so I'll go ahead and post something right now but if you would prefer I not join just tell me and I'll edit my post out.

Name: Luke
Race: human
Sex: Male
Age: 32
Height: 6’2”

Appearance: Tall and lean with black hair and sharp blue eyes. He is handsome in face with strong cheekbones, though deep stress lines mark around his mouth and eyes. His hair comes down almost to his eyes and is tide in a short tail behind. He is well muscled and walks with a confident grace. He wares a black leather armor vest and a dark green tunic beneath it. His trousers are dark brown and his cloak is black also. He also has a black leather belt that crosses his chest, also black leather and boots.

Personality: Kindly and seemingly friendly. He laughs a lot and knows many, many songs. He loves a good drink with friends and hunting. At least that is his lighter side, the one he shows decent people. His darker side is his bighting tongue and uncaring manner. He is very patient, to a fault even, but if you push enough buttons hard enough, long enough he will turn his dark side on you. He also has a healthy distrust for adult Elves that he keeps hidden, though he loves children. He was left emotionally scared after the death of his wife and never shows much sadness or visible rage. He is normally a picture calm.

Skills: Stealth, swordsmanship, the bow and staff. He also is and excellent horseman and has a fair amount of luck at dice.

Misc: Ambidextrous, has a ragged scar on his left side just above is second rib.

Weapons/equipment: Carries two curved short swords and quiver full of grey fletched arrows across his back. Over his shoulder he carries a yew longbow and in his hand is his walking staff. A short dagger resides in his boots and a hunting knife rests at the back of his belt.

His saddle bags contain extra bow strings, feathers for fletching, various foodstuffs, and a skillet. In his belt pouches he carries flint, an extra bow string, and a sizable amount of gold. Also usually carried with him is his lute.

Transportation: black roan stallion called Geb

History: Luke was born to the clan chief of one of the many nomadic tribes in Rohan. From a young age he learned horsemanship and the blade. Luke lived with the clan for sixteen years before pronouncing his intent to leave and seek adventure on the foothills of the Dark Mountains. His father gave him a black roan as a gift and the weapons master gave him his swords and dagger. Three months, two weeks, four days, seven hours, thirty-five minutes, and twelve seconds later he was lying face down in a ditch with an arrow in his side.

An elf maiden came upon him at that point and put him back on his horse and brought him out of the foothills, bandaged him, and nursed him back to health. Still being young and nursing a bad case of damaged ego he offered his services to the elf. She wisely accepted his offer as it was likely he would simply charge back into the wilds and get himself all the way killed this time.

Luke traveled with the elf; whose name he discovered was Katherine, for five years. He learned Elfish from her and picked up the long bow. They traveled far and wide together, Luke gaining skill with his blades and the bow. Often they would travel to Rivendel and there Luke had the opportunity to meet Elrond.

She told him finally to go one day while they visited Rivendel and left him behind there with her blessing. He lived in Rivendel for two more years gathering knowledge of Elfish lore and song.

He met a young woman there named Alexis and over the course of his time there he managed to win her affection and they were married. They moved off to the southern fringes of Mirkwood where he built a cottage and settled down with his wife.

He continued to practice with the sword, gaining skill. He would often take in the odd traveler and some would stay on to learn from him. For seven years he lived on the southern fringe of Mirkwood. In that time he established a school of the sword and bow. His wife had two beautiful daughters and a small son.

Three years after settling there an old man happened upon his school and offered to teach the staff there as well. Luke gratefully accepted. Luke and the man, whose name was Trag, became fast friends and Trag lived with Luke and his wife in their cottage and taught alongside Luke in the school.

It all ended one fateful day when Luke came back from hunting in the wood to find his cottage and school in flames and livestock slaughtered and torn apart. He rushed to his house and found Trag nailed to the floor inside the burning house, pincushioned with black feathered arrows. Out in the yard were staked the heads of half a dozen of the students that had currently been training with him. Among the stakes were littered the corpses of almost thirty orc; as many cut down by grey fletched arrows as by sword slashes. Filled with uncharacteristic rage he pursued the remaining orc and found the group, of about fifteen, about two hours march from his house.

From his vantage point on a slight rise above their camp he could see the forms of his wife and two daughters were they lay limply in a small pile near a newly built fire. Two headless corpses already turned on crude spits as the orcs prepared their victory feast of man flesh. Luke cut the celebration short however when he came howling into their midst.

They went down like wheat before his powerful sithes and he did not stop swinging until nothing moved. He collapsed near the bodies of his family and cried his despair for hours before he finally collected himself and set about burying his loved ones and the students that had been slaughtered and drug along. He found himself on his knees flooding the ground with tears twice more before he could finish the task and four more on the long hike back to his ruined school.

When he arrived back, he set about burying those left behind and left the orcs to rot. He gained some joy over the fact that he had not been able to find his six year old son among the dead at either place and as soon as he had finished the grizzly task of burying the dead he set out to find his son.

He found Geb, his horse in the woods not far from his house and searched the wood. A year found him back in Rivendel healing his broken heart. He finally left, still saddened but with the assurance that life would go on and one day he would see his wife and children again and with the hope that his son remains alive somewhere out there.

(Dang, I'm sorry if this is too long, I got carried away. Oh yeah, and sorry about the quality too, I know its not very good, but I'm tired and I wanted to get my bio up before you started to rp. I'll play him alot better than he sounds though ^_^)

I hope you don't mind how I used your character, Quimrill. I had to find a way for Lith to meet up with her mentor to secure the towns and alert the Ranger ranks. If there's something you don't like then please tell me. I think it's open whether your character wants to try and find a way to follow the Rangers out of curiosity or to figure out what went "wrong" with the smell now.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

yeah... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0> This might be a little hard to write now. That was my intended entrance. I'll figure something out, what your character did was probably the most realistic thing to do anyway.

right we'll see

Holy Frijoles! I love your character history! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> If that is "sloppy" writing on your part, then when you "Get it together" you will be really really really welcome in the Angmar Rising Thread! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> You had the same "problem" I had when trying to write a "short" bio on Gilfein! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif"border=0> Welcome! Enjoy! I will look forward to your posts! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Woah, A BATH!!!??? yikes! You realise it's gonna take at least half a dozen of you to hold Ulugz down. Of course the wargs will want to play too... and only one of them is afraid of water. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>
I'm going to wait for our singing friend to post again before I react to all of this, cause what I'm gonna do depends on what he does... and.... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>
