Hi Indy!

I hope your guild gets off the ground <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> It sounds very interesting~ I love all kinds of costumes myself though usually the more outlandish the better <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Those hoopy things are called bustles and they're so cool! although, I have to wonder how easy it is to sit down in those things... well, let me know how your costume turns out and I'd love to see pictures if you have any <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Take care,
*~Arwen Sol

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who likes costumes. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> yeah, I've heard its not very easy to sit down in the bustles. I'd love to share pictures when I'm done with the dresses.

--Indy <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Hi! I'm really into costumes too- I actually started a separate thread because I didn't know this one was here (didn't show up when I searched.) But I know about it now, so...
My main thing is LOTR/Renaissance costumes or just movie costumes in general. I recently made an elf dress for the Ren faire, & got lots of compliments from people there which was really nice. I'm currently working on one of Eowyn's dresses, & I got stuff yesterday to make a cape. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Hello all,
I don't realy make costumes, just clothes. Most are from before the 16th century and the other stuff is things from my head that I might need. The Latest thing I've made was some padding for armor.
I'm always wearing my stuff I made around the house.
Thats about it.

~ Storm Crow The Green
~ I return to you at the turn of the tide
~ Holder of the Earth Ring of Persuasion
~ Ent Caller (long live the Ents)
I think I'm a little insane... I have no good shoes for my Eowyn costume so I'm going to try to convert an old pair into some boots with some of my leftover fabric. (I was going to work on the vest, but I need to dye the lining because I'm lining it with my muslin pattern and the weather's not cooperating today.) Wish me luck...

indril, I'm making the "shieldmaiden" one that didn't get into TTT. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>
You can see it here. Of course, mine is the student-on-a-budget version <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>, so it's not completely accurate with the fabrics and stuff, but I'm hoping it will turn out ok. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Yeah, shoes...Ummm...does anyone have any ideas that will be appropriate (Aka "Mom will let me wear them"<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> for December? I have one or two pairs of leather sandals that could work, but nothing that would work for winter...

Do you need ideas for just shoes, Tigerlily? You could go to a discount shoe place like Payless and pick up some inexpensive boots or something. (If this is for the ROTK premier, who are you going as?)

Yay yay yay, finally!! I've been so surprised that there have been no costuming guilds to date. I'm glad one (two actually, SMOR ;)) has finally been made.

I'm Isilmë, but go by Sil. I looove sewing, although half the time when I sew I get annoyed and frustrated :-D. But I still love doing it. I made myself a dress for the Ren Faire/anything Tolkieny, but mostly I like making boy-ish ME clothes. I've got some poet shirts and boots and prefer to go as an archer as opposed to a lady, but hey... You probably cannot see it, but the bodice in my sig is something that I made. I also like designing Elvish-inspired clothes that are more for wearing anywhere (what, I can't wear my dress anywhere?). My biggest problem is lack of funding...sigh.

Indy-- I wore my cloak to school for Halloween last year...it was fun. My parents don't understand me either.

Namárië!

~Sil

P.S. Tigerlily: I'd like a slushie!!

EDIT: Pet of the Month List:
July- Don
August- Sil (Tentatively)
Sept-

I wish I knew how to make this ***!!*** digital camera work, I'd take pictures of some of the costumes I've made and create a web-site or somthing to link to. I was a member of the SCA for a while(Society for Creative Anacronisim) So I've made a lot of medieval garb. Mostly Celtic rennissance and Viking age outfits.
The Harry Potter outfits did indeed come out nicely. At the midnight Order of The Phoenix party the local news crew went nuts over them, followed us around asking all kinds of silly questions.
Needless to say, I'm the most popular person in the neighborhood come Halloween. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>

shieldmaiden, i love that dress!!!!!! are you using a pattern? if so, which one?

hello Tigerlily!!!! *hugs*

hello Sil!!!! *hugs* I know what you mean by getting upset with sewing. At times I can have a very quick temper and my mom has to take the thing i am working on away to prevent me from cutting it up. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0>

--indy <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

The dress I have is a fairly close reproduction of Eowyn's refugee dress. It would have been a ton closer if I hadn't needed to start making it before I had seen TTT more than once. What I had to go on was mostly internet pics and one viewing of the movie, so that made it a little hard. I found a shirt (For under the jumper) that's the exact right colour, but it's just a shirt, not the underdress. Because of this, I don't have the funkazoidal (This is a good thing)lacing on the sides, which I like. Also, a couple of days after we had cut everything out, I went to see TTT with my parents, and guess what? Mom and I both realised that her dress is Flared at the bottom to make it easier to walk in!! ERG! We found out AFTER we couldn't do anything about it!

The Boot idea would be nice, but Mom won't let me get the kind of boots I want, I have a pair of ankle height ones, but those won't really work. I want a pair of one that come to my knees. But, I don't want high heels or those really tight ones that my friend has that are really nasty looking. I want some like Aragorn's...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Think I could swipe his? And Legolas' silver coat thingie he wore at the council... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> *Angelic face*

Hi, GwenElf! *Hands her a slushie* So...how's chapter 17 going in the Hidden Blade? Is it gonna be posted soon? *Please, please*

Hehe, thanks for the slushie. Yummm. Chr. 17 just got put up while I was at school, so u can go read it now. And u cannot have Legolas' silvery thingy that he wears at the council--it's mine, I tell you!!! MINE!!! (That's my next "student-on-a-budget" project. <-- I love that; it fits me so well <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>)

I love that dress, SMOR--and that's a great piccy of Eowyn for reference. Ok, if I can't have his silvery thingymabob, I want a pattern for Aragorn's black duster/Jerkin/dealybob that he wears over his clothes when he's in Ranger "mode". Anybody got a McCalls number?

Yes, GwenElf, I just found it after I posted...<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Poor Aramir. I wish I had a pattern for that thing, too. My friend, who is a LOTR?Matrix freak, looovess it and wants it so badly. I thought it would be cool to make it for her, but probably cheaper to buy one..heh. Speaking of which, they had these awesome $1200 cloaks at the Ren Faire; they were leather pieces sewn together to make this huggeee cloak that fanned out really nicely when you spun around. I wanteddddd oneeeee.. (yeah, I have $1200. Riiggghhhttttt)

Namárië!
~Sil

Mmmm... leather cape... *drools*
Sil, I can't read it either!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Indril- I didn't use a pattern, really. I was sort of insane at the time and decided to draft my own with this book my mom had about making historical costumes- it had a lot of great renaissance/middle ages type stuff with these scaled-down patterns you could enlarge. I had to combine a couple different things (the sleeves from one thing with an added slit with the bodice/skirt of another), and because of that it's turned out to be the biggest pain in the butt I've ever sewn. I'm still having a little trouble getting the neckline to lie flat, but I love the way the sleeves turned out. I still need to finish the vest part. I'll try to post piccies when I get it all done.

Tigerlily, what I'm doing for my boots is using an old pair of shoes I have and using some of my leftover fabric to make tops for them. I want to make them removable so if I ever need any other costume shoes they can be interchangable. I finished sewing today and just need to figure out how to attach them. I like them- I made the tops to look like pirate boots with the big cuffs, since I'm swooning for pirate costumes too at the moment. Won't see it under the dress anyway. So maybe you could do something like that to get the look you want.

This websitehas some ideas for pattern #'s for Aragorn's coat. (One of my favorites for costume stuff anyway.)
SMOR--I looove that website. I go to it all the time just to read stuff and look at the ideas... and then I drown in sorrow because I am too poor to afford silk velvet. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

Just a random question: Does anyone else watch movies just to see the costumes and or/ notice the costumes more than anything else? Or am I just a freak? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

I finished my shirt!! Yay! Hi Luthie!! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Sil, you're not the only one... I also tend to gravitate towards movies that I know will have good costumes. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Then feel sad because I'm too poor to make them all. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-crying.gif"border=0>

She should practice..on me. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> Then I could look like him...well, not really, but hey, the hair is a start, even if I'm not blonde. I can do the hairstyle on others and I can do the herringbone braid on myself, but I'm still working on the side braids. I WILL be able to do them by December!

This is on Topic because being able to do specific hairstyles is a good part of having an acurate costume.
