Hi Everyone,

I first heard about this exercise challenge over on TORN and it captured my imagination so I looked into it further. It was first started by a group of Tolkien fans over at WeightWatchers.com and they've sent letters out to various Tolkien websites encouraging other fans to join them in the Rivendell challenge. I'm going to do it. Other people have expressed an interest in learning more about the challenge, so I am posting below the letter that was sent to me when I wrote for more information:

458 MILES from Hobbiton to Rivendell!

Walk, run, hike, bike, blade, swim – if you can measure the distance, you can do this challenge. Keep a log, and record your daily or weekly miles and the type of exercise. For walkers and hikers, you might want to invest in a walking meter, they look like wristwatches. Otherwise, you can estimate your distance at 1 mile for every 20 minutes of brisk walking on a flat surface. My suggested deadline is the opening of The Return of the King, Christmas 2003. This goal is realistic for any fitness level. Aim for an average of 10 miles a week, which is a realistic goal for must of us who are choosing to walk the distance. If you require more of a challenge, move the deadline up sooner. But give yourself time … just because Frodo walked 18 miles the first night, doesn’t mean you have to! Hobbits, as we all know, are made of tougher stuff than men (and even women!). Most of us have to work or go to school or raise our children, and that means we can’t recreate the journey day by day (of course, maybe someday you will, when you can afford to take a monthlong holiday). The important thing about this quest is your commitment to see it through to the end. Choose a time frame that is realistic, and stick to it! Our rules are very flexible. We want everyone to create a challenge that will work for their lifestyles.

Our reference book is THE ATLAS OF MIDDLE-EARTH- Karen W. Fonstad

p. 157 gives the date, hours traveled, mileage, where they ended, and even mph!!

A Few Friendly Suggestions:

1) Frodo didn’t do it alone! If LOTR teaches us nothing else, it shows us the resilience of a group endeavor. If you can’t find any walking buddies (have your tried your local websites?) then let Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, et al be your company. LOTR is available on audiotapes and CDs; there is an excellent version by the BBC starring Ian Holm as the voice of Frodo.

2) Any journey in Middle-Earth would be incomplete without a sturdy walking stick! You’d be pleasantly surprised to see how a walking staff activates the imagination, enhancing the experience of any hike. Walking songs are tons of fun too!

3) If you’re taking a long journey, don’t forget your water and lembas! Exercise without fuel is worse than no exercise at all. In lieu of lembas, you can wrap some graham crackers in leaves (okay okay, they didn’t have lembas yet, picky picky, have an apple!) And we’re not recreating Frodo and Sam’s journey through Mordor, so fill up your water bottles and enjoy your H20!

4) Copy the map from the book, or better, from a Middle-Earth atlas, and mark your progress along their trail. To make your goal a physical reality, to have a daily visual reminder of your progress and goals can be that extra push you need to get you out of the door!

5)Don’t think about the entire 458 miles at once. Just think about making it to Buckleberry Ferry, and then Bree, etc… Frodo and Sam's first campsite is 18 miles from Bag End!

E-mail eowynchallenge@hotmail.com with any questions. And let us know your progress! Namarie.

The Road Goes Ever On,

Jax

Wow, cem, you found this fast <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>. It's been less than five minutes since I opened this new thread <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>.<BR><BR>Anyway, welcome all! I hope you all find your way to this new thread and do give us a hearty shout to let us know you're here.<BR><BR>You'll note that the initial list has been moved over here and is now updated to where I think everyone is. As always, do check the list and if I have you in the wrong place give me a shout and I'll put you where you need to be. I'm realizing as I type here, for example, that I do believe I left -myself- in the wrong spot, so I'll have to check that out.<BR><BR>Must say, and I know it's partly from being at "The Gathering" and partly from seeing ROTK, but I was plenty sentimental going through the last 15 pages or so of our WtR posts tonight, seeing so many people celebrating their arrival at Rivendell, seeing so many walkers celebrating the arrival of -others- at Rivendell. What a fantastic support group this is and I'm so lucky to have found you and those of you who have just joined us (cemthinae! indril! Liana!), you have discovered a wonderful Fellowship here. Welcome to you all!<BR><BR>Whether you're on your way to Rivendell, Lothlorien or beyond I'm so looking forward to continuing the adventure with you!

Welcome to the journey, Evenstar! We're more than happy to have you join us.<BR><BR>It's been awhile since I've updated my mileage, so I'll say that I'm at 584.5 miles and still heading toward the Misty Mountains. Hmmm, I need to go over and claim some shields.<BR><BR>Merry Christmas to all of you and I'll talk to you again on the weekend!

So, my first post into this new thread...<BR><BR>I'm now at 995.5 km / 618.7 miles (R+160), which means that, I've reached the Misty Mountains foothills - would you please move me there, Shaal? Hey, soon I'll reach 1000 km!<BR><BR>Shadowcat, it's actually not so terribly cold up here, at least when the wind comes from the sea. Right now, it's some degrees above zero C, maybe in the 40s F. But, it's sleeting, and the wind is pretty strong so, the exercise bike really comes in handy. Part of the last mileage I have to add was done by walking, though.<BR><BR>Welcome to the newcomers! And, congratulations for any milestones that somebody may have reached, but I've missed!<BR><BR>Happy Holidays to everyone! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Wow, so its nice to have internet access again... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-rolleyes.gif"border=0><BR><BR>I hope you all had a great time at the gathering (those who went), I am sooooo jealous. Blast my school for having finals week the week of! Ahh well, perhaps next time I wont have lots of big nasty tests! <BR><BR>So, I know Ive got some more mileage to add.. Im slowly getting closer to Rivendell (school takes up a tremendous amount of time..), but cant seem to find my notebook currently (that'll teach me to clean my room... <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0>) however, chilling in Bree is kinda nice too.<BR><BR>I hope everyone is doing well. I'm finally getting over my sickness that I've had for the past 11 weeks. let me tell you, that has not been fun! (And my doctor said I didnt have mono.. yeh.. riiiight..) Though, I have managed to avoid getting the flu thus far (and those of you in the states probably know what a feat that is currently <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>) We had to send 5 girls to the hospital from my house during the weeks between thanksgiving and dec 15. It was rather scary.<BR><BR>But anyway.. Just dropping in to say hello, I'll get my updated mileage up soon. Merry christmas everyone!

Yay, new thread! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><BR><BR>Shaal - when you get a chance, can you put me on Weathertop? I got there a few weeks back and am now slogging through that long part between there and the Last Bridge (only 2 more miles to 300 which I should hit tomorrow - spent most of today in the car coming back from North Carolina)!<BR><BR>I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. <BR><BR>It was so much fun to get together with some of you at the Gathering - I was glad to get a chance to hear Shaal perform with Urban Tapestry! They sounded wonderful and I wish I could have listened to more! Kat was a great teammate on the Royal Quest (ok, we didn't win but I think we ruled!), and it was great to meet Emerlute - I loved the beaded purse and just have to say that you looked fabulous (I don't remember how much weight you said you had lost but looked like to me you found your 'just right')!<BR><BR>Ok, must go rest from the holidays!
