Who should play Bilbo in the Hobbit?

Ian Holm, unfortunately, would be a little too old by the time this film gets made, so who is your best bet?

I can only think of one person, actually two. Either Joe Pesce or the short actor, which his name escapes me, who played in Romancing the Stone with Michael Douglas.

Assuming the same crew was doing the casting as did the casting for LOTR, I'd say let em pick someone. Their casting was flawless for LOTR.

Too bad Ian Holm would be too old-- he is the *perfect* Bilbo.

I think Bugs should play Bilbo.

Bugs would be far better playing Arwen in a cameo during the Rivendell bits. That darned bunny always liked dressing in drag, and he has the pointy ears already!

Unless Ian Holm has some physical limitation that would prevent him from playing the role, I don't see why he should look too old for Bilbo. Anyway, I don't think anyone can fill Holm's shoes and keep in line with his performance.

Ian Holm looked too old for Bilbo in the prologue to FotR.

They will certainly cast someone short -- and tall guys for the dwarves -- so that much of the movie can be shot without camera trickery.

I would bet that someone we have never heard of will play Bilbo.

Aragorn-the-Wise, do you mean Danny deVito? Urgh!

I think they will be best off casting an unknown - as all the hobbits except Ian Holm essentially were.

And I would hope that for Gandalf they will recast Ian McKellan.

Ian Holm looked too old for Bilbo in the prologue to FotR.

Except that, as the movie plays it, that is what Bilbo looks like at the time of his journey. The actor choosen to play him would have to look that old as well. In which case, I would rather they keep Holm, who, althought being a few years older than when he filmed, would fit the part best and preserve the continuity. Why refuse Holm his chance? I'd sooner discard the age issue in exchange for Holm's acting style. IMHO, he owns Bilbo. Anybody else will feel like a copy.

We would certainly keep Gandalf and Elrond, despite the fact that they too will be older. They, like Bilbo, are relatively ageless over those fifty years. If they can be kept, I think Holm can, too. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Too bad Ian Holm would be too old-- he is the *perfect* Bilbo.

I don't think that Ian Holm would be much different in 5 years than he is now...In the prologe of LOTR he looked as Bilbo should look at the age of 50.After he found the ring he remained anchanged since his 111 years and that's why we see him looking 50 at LOTR.I can't imagine anyone but Holm playing Bilbo...

I'm sure there are a multitude of English actors who could do an excellent job -- Sir Ian is getting up in age and asking him to play a much younger Bilbo would not only mean a great deal of physical uncomfortability, it would also mean a greater use of stunt-doubles -- the role of Bilbo in The Hobbit is considerably more active than that of Bilbo in LOTR.

How about Colin Firth? :-p

Hmm, I know an actor who would look the part but I'm not sure he can speak English: Zbigniew Zamachowski, he's the main character in Kieslowski's White.

How about the Dwarf in "Bad Santa"?<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
And someone stole my Joe Pesci as Biblo joke!
But I can always expand:
Bilbo to Thorin and Company:
"Huh you think just because I'm a Hobbit I'm f-----g funny? My curly ,hairy feet, do they amuse you?'<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>
Seriously, I think a relatively unknown but experienced actor would be best as Biblo.
And why recast Gandalf? If it ain't broke don't fix it...

I heard that Ian Holm had to have his face taped back to look younger for the prologe. As much as I love Ian as Bilbo, it would be nice to see someone a little younger. Would Billy Boyd be too confusing as Bilbo? I thought he was very good at acting reluctant to face danger and we all know what an excellent and admirable hobbit he is.

You guys are forgetting that whatever actor that is cast should ideally be short around 5'6 to 5'8.

Probably the nerdiest answer of all time, but I'd like Sylvester McCoy, the seventh Doctor Who to play Bilbo. I'd also like Eric Idle as one of the Dwarves, and maybe Brian Blessed as Thorin.
