The Hope of Estel: a word aside

Pull out your pack and head on down to the Prancing Pony for some great Role Playing (try to stay in character)!

The Hope of Estel (please see the IC)

This RP is set in the future of Middle-earth, during
the reign of Aragorn’s grandson Estel. The Kingdom of Gondor and Rohan has swelled since the War of the Ring, so that it chafes at its borders, and skirmishes with Orcs, Southrons, and Easterlings are common, and the Hobbits have put up a fence, miles long, marking the edge of the Shire to keep unnecessary Big People out. The Easterlings and Southrons have allied, creating the Empire of the Rising Sun, which is quite powerful and quite loyal to its co-regents (the king is from one group, the queen from the other. Both have equal authority in matters of state). The remaining Orcs have divided into clans, loosely joined together by loyalty to the Goblin King.

King Estel, despite his name (Hope, after his grandfather) has been sickly and paralyzed from the waist down since birth. He possesses a remarkable mind, but he cannot fight. Many of the nobles and politicians at court see him as weak, and are disgusted at the thought of bowing to a king who must be carried in a litter, who cannot ride a horse without help, who can hardly lift a sword to fight…

But King Estel has a dream: peace. He wants to see the end of the skirmishes between East and West, and hopes one day to draft a treaty of peace between Orcs and Men. He wants to see a world where not every young man must learn to fight and accustom himself to killing before he reaches manhood. If there is to be prosperity of the purest kind, then the kingdom of Men must be secure not just in its fortresses and garrisons, but in its homes and courts, its schools and workshops, in its villages that border the Eastern lands and its towns near the Orcish territories.

To accomplish this immense task, King Estel has called a meeting of those who are loyal to his cause. This assortment could include Men and Women of Gondor and Rohan, representatives/ambassadors/immigrants from the Empire of the Rising Sun or the Orcish clans, Dwarves, Hobbits, Rangers, Riders, and possibly one or two people of distant elvish heritage. I’m always open to creatively weird characters. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

There’s a problem though: Estel has a very young son named Elessar II. He also has a cousin, Andulin, who does not see peace as the best option. He would much rather see war made upon the Empire, and extermination dealt to the Clans. He has been gathering discontented nobles and politicians to his side, and wishes to get rid of Estel (The Queen died two years ago in childbirth) in such a way that it would seem like his sickly nature finally won out. That way, Andulin would be able to take the throne as rightful heir, and be regent to Elessar II until he came of age. Those years would give him plenty of time to set his plans in action and also to guide the development of the young prince’s ideals.

I will play Estel and Andulin whenever they are needed (which won’t be particularly often). You are more than welcome to take a “bad guy” role, but I would like the emphasis to be on the peacemakers. It would be great if several of you could take on a baddie in addition to your peacemaker character to move the tension-building along.

Some guidelines to consider when designing your character:

1) All the elves have departed to Valinor by this point. There will be no full-blooded elves in this RP, and I would appreciate it if we could also stay away from semi-elves for the most part.

2) The objective of this mission is peace. Only one or two fighters will be needed on this quest as main characters. There will be a sort of faceless escort accompanying us in our journeys. Those guards will remain flat characters, to be used by everyone on an as-needed, red-shirt basis. Baddies will need to be vicious, though, either in mindset or in practice.

3) Please, be both creative and realistic in designing your characters. Unless you have a really, and I mean really, well-rounded one, I don’t want to see any 18-year-old half-elven sorceress-healer-swordmaidens with gorgeous physiques and crystal-blue eyes. Our peacemakers will generally be adults with experience, not rebellious teenagers wanting to prove themselves. Capiche? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

4) Everyone is welcome to join so long as they have read All the guidelines at the top of the Prancing Pony forum, and have at least skimmed some other RPs to see what goes in the Pony and what won’t. Know what gets a thread locked, and avoid those things as you would clichés. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

5) Spell-check and proof-read your posts for clarity, please.

6) If you decide to join, please be dedicated to this thread and those in it. If you need to leave for a while, or can’t come onto TORC, or you just don’t know where your muse has run off to lately, please let us know here in the OOC so we can work out a solution with you.

7) I want this RP to be serious, creative, and above all, fun for everyone. This means I honestly don’t care if we don’t quite stick to canon in every single aspect of this RP. This is far in the future, so we’ll be making up a lot of stuff as we go. Let’s just keep it as close as we can to the works of Tolkien, but if we mess up it’ll be OK. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Characters

Loyal to King Estel:

Aiwe: Bentha Khubai, Sounthron Skinchanger and agent of King Estel. Oooh! Another RP I can join<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> That is if you don't mind and are still looking for more people<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I'll just stick my bio here, though this character doesn't have much to her yet since I made her up not too long ago<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Name:Aeriel
Gender: Female
Race: men(specificly, of the Northern Kingdom)
Age: 25
Languages: Common speech and elvish
Appearance: straight black hair a little past shoulder length, grey eyes, and around 5ft 7in. She most often wears typical traveling clothes and a grey or forest green cloak.
Weapons: a sword, and a silver dagger.
Notes/History: She grew up mainly in the wild, venturing out with her father who is one of the Rangers of the North. Of her mother she did not know much, for she had disappeared while Aeriel was very young. Most often she spends her time traveling throughout Middle-earth, favoring the elvish realms(which I guess don't really exist anymore in this RP<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>) over most places and always in her heart hoping that she would hear some word of her mother's fate, if she yet lived or what had happened to her. She is skilled in combat with blade and bow, but only uses them when absolutly necessary.

Hey! Mind if I join? I'm assuming that you are farmiliar with Sévi from the quest to retake moria. What would you think of an older version of her? Not same exact character, just very similar. Ot it could actually be her a little furthur into life, since she was 1/4 elvish so she would have a longer lifespan. I dunno. I'll go with whatever you decide is good. i have several well rounded characters to choose from, so let me know.

Hello, and thanks for taking an interest in this thread. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0>

As far as characters are concerned, I'm willing to accept these for the most part. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> Just two things. One, make sure your character has a good reason for being on this quest. I'm not so sure Kyla, a barmaid, would have much opportunity to become a loyal and trusted servant of the king. However, if you can come up with something plausible, then by all means keep her as your character. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Two: I'm still seeing lots of swords, bows, arrows, and daggers. Let's please cut down on the weapons, alright? There won't be much fighting here, mostly a lot of intrigue and plotting. So while i realise that in Middle-earth society, violence is "the in thing," I would like our characters to have more experience in talking things out than fighting them out. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Elfmaiden13, I'm not sure Sevi would work here, unless perhaps she's been highly trained as a diplomat (or something of the sort). She's been a fighter in the other threads I've seen her in, and this is not a thread for fighters. It's a thread for politiques and the like. If you can bear to have her changed so much, then she'll be fine. Her wit will certainly be useful, so long as she doesn't get too sarcastic with anyone important. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

The IC will be up either tonight or tomorrow night, as homework permits. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

--Aiwe

Aeriel can be peaceful too<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> I was just mentioning what she does carry when necessary. The daughter of a Ranger of the North won't go walking around in the wild without a sword you know<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> But, she doesn't need to use them in this RP<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

edit- and I just cut her bow and arrows out of her bio<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0><img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> There's one less weapon....

edit2- And I just changed the very last sentence of her notes/history<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>
Aiwe, seeing as in the previous thread Sévi is the rightful heir to the throne of Rohan, in the years to follow she would no doubt become highly skilled in the arts of diplomacy. She would not be nearly as young as in the previous thread, and would no doubt be much more refined too, though she can still defend herself. I don't intend to take the weapons and fighting route in this thread, since it would obviously be out of place. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

OK! Thanks everyone. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Elfmaiden, is she going to be the heir here as well? That would be useful if Estel dies and the only other heir of the proper age is Andulin. Her heritage could be unknown to her, or a closely guarded secret. Whatever you like. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

The IC's going up now.

--Aiwe

EM

Sorry I confused you! <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif"border=0>

Is Sévi going to be the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor?

Right now, the only two who could rightfully take the throne after Estel's death are Estel's cousin Andulin and Estel's son Elessar II. Little Elessar is two years old right now, making the only possible heir Andulin. Andulin is plotting against Estel at this time. If Sévi were to have the better claim (say, Estel's switched-at-birth sister, or an illicit daughter of Estel's father's younger brother), she could really upset Andulin's plans for power. Andulin is the son of Estel's father's youngest sister. In English history (which much of Middle-earth culture is based upon), a claim to the throne is always strongest through a male line, even if the heir of that male line happens to be female. Think Elizabeth I, Bloody Mary, Queen Anne, etc. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

the-elf-friend

First off, do you havve a nickname you prefer? Elfy perhaps? <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Second, I like your idea. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> We'll definitely be needing somebody to draft the treaties and write things down.

Third, there's one thing I'm confused about. You say your character is married to the youngest daughter of the Steward, but this RP takes place during the reign of Aragorn's grandson. Any children of the Steward would have died by then. Perhaps the wife could be a decendant of the Stewards? Or of Faramir and Eowyn? It's up to you. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

--Aiwe

Edit: Amrunelen, nice intro. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

Ok Aiwe, that sounds like a good idea to me. It would add a nice twist to the RP. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0> We could say she was Estel's younger sister, who was spirited away after she was born, because of rumors concerning assasination. They kept her hidden so that in the case that the king died or was assasinated, there would still be an heir to the throne. She was raised as a commoner, and when she was old enough, she was told about her connection to the throne, and given a ring to prove her claim should the need arise. She continues to live as a commoner as not to arouse suspicion, and now she has been called to the meeting/council by Estel.

Do you think I should still have her be blind, just because of how much I developed that into her old character?

Once I have your approval for everything, I will go ahead and post. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

I like. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif"border=0> I think she should stay blind. It's an important part of her basic "Sevi-ness" and adds depth.<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Post as soon as you like, everybody! I'll work on compiling the list of characters tomorrow night, so don't let me stop you just because I haven't added you to the character list on the first post. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0>

--Aiwe

Edit: I am adding a second character. She's got some subplots to bring to the table. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Anyone who wants to have more than one character is more than welcome to create them. Just post a bio on the OCC to give us all a little warning, OK?

Name: Isuli Inía

Race: Easterling Skinchanger

Occupation: Apprentice agent to Bentha Khubai. Still learning to control her gift and to fit into Gondorian society.

She has not been invited to the meeting, but Bentha will bring her into the loop with Estel's permission.

Much better, Ren. She's got much more reason to be with the group now. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

Everyone is meeting with the king now. If other people come later wanting to join, we'll figure out a way to get them into the group.

Rana, that's fine. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif"border=0> Send a quick bio or something, and we'll carry your character for as long as you need us to.

--Aiwe

well Aiwe, now that I have your approval, I will go ahead and get started on my post. <img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif"border=0>

EDIT:

Name: Estelle (meaning “Star”), but she goes by an assumed name: Sévi
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Description: Long dark hair, which she usually keeps in a braid. She has an appearance of being tall, though she is not much taller than the average woman. Her skin is slightly tanned from being outdoors working so much. She has rare violet eyes. She is very beautiful, but tends to hide it with her clothes and manner of dress
Other: She is blind, and also was trained in her childhood to use various weapons. Normally a common girl would not have access to such learning, but when her heritage was revealed to her, her guardian took care to train her in weapons, should she ever need to defend herself.

Okay, so here's the bio:

Name: Kaleethe
Race: Human (Gondorian)
Gender: Female (!<img src="http://www.tolkienonline.com/mb/i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif"border=0>!!)
Appearance: Quite tall, but very delicately built, thin and lithe. She has red/brown hair that reaches slightly past her shoulders and yellow eyes.
Political leanings: One of the nobles that support Andulin

Just one question, is Andulin openly against the King?

Hey Aiwe I would like to join as well. I would like to be the hobbit in this thread. Possibly the one who had the Hobbits put the fence around the Shire. I'll think of a name and post a bio shortly.

Question to anyone. I can't remember, but after Sauraman died, did the Hobbitts ever put someone in a leadership role of the Shire? I'll go snooping around in my books to help, but it might be a while.

I remember now about the Thain of the shire. The last recorded one was Faramir Took 1. I think that should work, if that's ok.

Ok, I looked at the Encyclopedia of Arda, and got a name and background.

Name: Fortinbras Took III
Title: Thain of the Shire
Background: Grandson of Faramir Took I. Fortinbras became Thain of the shire after the death of his father Faramir Took II. He saw the growth of the population of men, and many that were moving into the Shire area. After much thought he had the Hobbitts build a fence around the borders of the Shire to stake off their homeland. He has come to Minas Tirit at the request of the King. He is a peaceful hobbit, and wants only to keep the Shire safe, eat, and smoke his pipe.
