The Valaraukar Lair

A small cave entrance far in the North of Middle-Earth, located in what was once Angmar. Innocent looking enough, it seems to cast a shadow on the ground around it, a blot that is almost more spiritual than physical. You dare to enter? Duck beneath the low threshold and you will find yourself in a deep cavern. But it is not dark; a throne at one end, carven into the wall, holds a figure of awful majesty-- a Balrog, mightiest servant of Melkor of days long lost: Huinar, lord of this cavern. At his side, upon a raised throne, sits another figure, smaller but with a sense of power no less potent-- the Princess of Numenor, Lady Vanimor, skilled in dark magic and consort to the fiery Lord of the cave, glowing with a blackened light beautiful and terrible to behold. Torches provide light in other portions of the Lair, and ignite when the Lord leaves, but now this pair is the only illumination.

As your eyes become adjusted to the flickering lighting, you begin to see the extent of the cave. To the right of the Lord and Lady sits another throne, bearing a hunched black form radiating power and evil-- Gloamglozer, the Balrog's chief advisor, and his torture master. A yawning corridor against the right wall leads away to unknown destinations, although distant screams and groans leave little doubt that the torture chamber and probably the dungeons are to be found there. Looking back to the left, another corridor stretches back from just beside the Balrog, but a forbidding gate of hard iron blocks the portal and a sign over the entrance reads "Members only. Danger." Farther to the left, a mirror image of the corridor leading down to the torture chambers sparkles with light: the treasury and living quarters can be found below. As your eyes finish adjusting, you become aware of the decor of the main cave. A skeleton tastefully stretched in a pose of eternally foiled escape reaches out from a dark corner, one bony foot still locked in the links. From another corner come the unmistakable smells and sounds of trolls. Orcs and worse huddle at the sides of the cave, their harsh talking silenced; they begin to move towards you in hungry anticipation. Something brushes at the corner of your eye, and you spin to look, but it has already disappeared into the shadows. You begin to wonder if you will escape alive from this cave, but before you can turn and flee the Balrog rumbles a welcome.

"Greetings, traveler. If you serve the Dark Lord, the All-Powerful Melkor, feel welcomed here, for we also serve Him. If you serve the lesser Lord Gorthaur, known as Sauron, please feel at ease, but know that he has no hold over me or mine. Only other Balrogs such as I may join as true Members, with all the benefits pertaining thereto, but you may rest here." He leans forward slightly, eagerly. "Unless you are one of those ridiculous 'Free Peoples'... in which case I think we have just received our newest tasty morsel." The Demon's eyes gleam, and you hear a hidden gate behind you begin to creak as it slides down. You have only a moment to escape.

Well? Do you stay and join us? Or do you seek to flee before being trapped and served at the next feast? Welcome, traveler!

OK, this entry post needed serious therapy. So the old post has been completely removed and replaced by an actual description of this place.

I am not even remotely a balrog , though I do share the essence of fire with your kind.

I just stopped by to let you know that the Dark Lord has agreed to send over some refreshments for all of you, so the trolls will be by soon with casks of Mordorian Wicked Ale and other tasty stuff.

Have fun! Don't kill anyone I know!

Greetings, Balrogthane!!

I like this forum..

Well, I'm not technically a Balrog, though I do show embarrassing resemblances to them in temper and looks..

I also own two Balroglets.. Robert and Betsy. Cunning little creatures!

By the way, my name's Alassė

*graciously thanks Legrace*

My humble thanks, milady. I am sure you will convey my thanks to your mighty husband, and my regrets that I felt the need to find my own hall. Speaking of which : thank you most humbly for being the first to honor my abode.

Gloamglozer, I am pleased to welcome you, but be advised -- only other balrogs may join. And could you tell me your history?

Forgive me, Princess, I began answering Legrace before I heard you -- I beg your pardon for my inattentiveness.

I will most graciously accept you, if you have close friends of my race. If not, well . . . I will restrain myself, but others of my kind may not have willpower, and you do look a tasty little morsel. Devil

What is your history, and those of your - ah - balroglets? Smile

I trust you come with the Dark Lord's good will.

*curtseys*

Many thanks, O mighty Balrog!

I am indeed here with the Dark Lord's approval. In fact, before our illustrious master was turned into a giant, flaming eyeball, I used to go in and sing to him every day, or whenever he got into a larger-than-usual temper.

Sometimes, Ringwraith #7 (we all called him Bob) would come in and play a tambourine as well.

But the history of my precious Balroglets is entwined with those good old days.. Joe, Robert and Betsie's father, was caught in an embarrassing situation with Darlene, a lovely female Balrog. As a side note, whenever she got good and riled, her flames smelled of peanut butter..

But at any rate, Sauron, always a man of honor, forced Darla to marry the willing Joe, and thus, there was a huge wedding out by the lava pond, and Orc # 11,239 was the maid of honor. Bob the Ringwraith, Joe's keeper, was the best man.

And thus, a few months later, a litter of little balroglets came along! I think there were ten in all. Sauron kept one as a pet, and sent one exceptionally large one to guard Moria.

I took two, and the rest I've lost track of.

Hehe! I had so much fun writing that...

Well, that is certainly an... interesting... story. So that was where little Ricky came from. I myself was the guardian of Moria, and unfortunately Ricky thought he was the Big Man. I fear he did not take kindly to a previous Balrog, and we had a falling out : literal, in Ricky's case. In fact, he ended up at the bottom of a large rockslide. The upstart actually suggested that I was too old and slow to defend against intruders, and he had come to replace me !

Ah well, perhaps he was right...

-(----

P.S.-- why did it post before I was finished ? *scratches head* I guess that's the infamous "double post." How can I get rid of it?

Well, I don't want to sound harsh-- especially as I only just joined TORC !-- but this is a fairly, hmm, exclusive group. Theoretically, it contains only Balrogs. Other servants of the Dark Lord are welcome to visit, but they may not join. If that sounds too overbearing, I just thought a group for Balrogs only would be a good idea ; there are already groups for all Evil peoples anyway.

Other servants of the Dark Lord welcome, eh? What about the Dark Lord?

I am a bit disappointed at the lack of Balrogs here...but then again, I tend to keep my underlings busy. I will tell a few to drop by when I can spare them

BT, yes, you have definitely suffered from the infamous 'DP' My apologies, friend! It happens to the best of us!

What you want to do is look down at the bottom of the first duplicate post (since it was the incomplete one), and click on the little, red 'Edit' button. That will take you to where you can delete the post, say 'oopsie!' and go on.

*bows to the Dark Lord* Do you profess to be Sauron, mighty one? Or simply the Dark Lord? Because if you are Sauron, then there's this little matter I need to settle about some eye makeup I borrowed from him....

BT, I wouldn't worry about not having too many members. In fact, it's really nice for a change! Most of the forums I'm a part of I really, really enjoy, but it's so difficult to keep on top of things. Since there's a lot of members of them, the ones who are on the net a lot tend to sort of shoo the others away because the seldom-visiting ones don't have time to read though the looooong posts and then still make one themselves. I'm trying to avoid being shooed, but it is hard.

So the quiet and peace (except for a few blazes) of the Valaraukar Lair is very nice indeed!

Yes... Ricky was the oldest of Darlene's litter (or do Balrogs lay eggs?), and was already burning by the time he was a minute old. Therefore, he got into the habit of bossing people, and Sauron felt that Ricky's further presence in Mordor would cause unneeded discord.

That, and Ricky had a special taste for Orc Captains, and it really frustrated Billy, Ringwraith #3, who was in charge of training the little mutants. As soon as Billy trained one and released him to his duties, Ricky would have a new, tasty morsel for breakfast.

Billy took his frustration to Sauron, and that was the clincher for Ricky..

This is so much fun.. Tell me if I'm being a bit too bizarre..

I will forgive your lack of Sindarin knowledge. It is, after all, a filthy Elvish language.

Translated into the so-called "High Elvish", the name to the right of this text means nothing less than Melkor.

Very well m'lord . . . I will continue to serve you ceaselessly, although I would rather remain here. It needs a few more touches before it is ready for long-term habitation-- I'm thinking prisoners chained up for entertainment, various shadowy forms that make mortal blood run cold, and the odd skeleton. *grins wickedly*

Ooo, like the idea of the decor, BT! Do you think a few trolls would be out of order? You could hunt them whenever you felt ready for a snack.. Or do you not like troll-meat?

I also think that a tribe of Dwarfs to terrorize would be a marvelous addition. We could let rumors of mithril and silver in our cave drift across M-E.. that'd draw them in. We might could even keep them in a side-cave until you and the Balroglets make your grand entry..

This is such a cool thread..

Well, no, I can't say I go much for troll. It's fun to fight one, they're actually a challenge sometimes. I never use any of my weapons when I go hunting ya know. But they taste like, hmm, granite? Maybe with a hint of limestone. And they're equally hard to eat. If that wasn't enough, they're not very nourishing either! For some reason, they're just empty calories.

But for entertainment purposes, they are enjoyable. I think you had an excellent idea, Princess. Just no eating.

Dwarves? Naah, I've had my fill of Dwarves, and beyond. They're just as tough as troll, and chomping down on that armor has cost me more than one tooth. Whatever else you can say about them, they know how to make good armor. Lost an incisor on that dopey king, Nain or Ninny or whatever. But Orcs taste worse, you know-- my favorite so far is Human. Elf is a little bitter, and they're actually rather dangerous. Humans are generally much easier to beat, and there's more to them than most, and they don't have that annoying metal shell. No offense to yourself, of course! We are all servants of the Dark Lord here . . .

By the way, have you noticed I took your advice and added the decor? *waves arm at his achievement* Feel free to add some flourishes of your own! I think it needs the woman's touch anyway.

Sorry balrogthane it has been hectic in Minas Morgal so i've not been able to answer your question. So my history, here we go.When Mareg suthanistra (head of the evil ones) opened the portal to this world his 4 lieutenants followed him, me, Morgoth, Shelob(mistress of beasts) and a human made out of pure concentrated evil.We helped Mareg rule this land until the uprise of good. Then Mareg went back through the portal to draconia, Morgoth went to what is now Mordor and set up an evil strong hold there, Shelob turned into her favourite form and went to cirith ungul, the human dissappeared and I was left to wander Middle Earth for centuries feeding of the hapless souls that wandered from the beaten path. That is until Evil grew strong again and I joined Minas Morgul and Mareg reopened the portal and he himself came back through.Well that is my shortened history.I have to get back to Minas Morgul now

Well, that's an...interesting tale...how does that mesh with LotR? Did you mean Sauron, not Morgoth? Cause Sauron went to Mordor. Morgoth just stayed in Thangorodrim.

Well, anyway, for all the other inhabitants of this dark place, I'm sorry to announce that the...entertainment I hired found out just what I was and where they were supposed to come. So, unfortunately, they skipped out. We'll have to make do with the food reserves.

Princess, I'd like to appoint you honorary secretary, if that'd be OK with you.

Sorry BT i got it all confused Morgoth went to Thangorodrin and sent his servant to Mordor.I like the decor by the way, i'd have it in my dungeons at Minas Morgul but i like to use my victims for toture not decoration.By the way if you ever need a bit of torturing done just come calling at Minas Morgul and see my work for yourself so that you can 'employ' me to do a bit for you.
Anyway your always welcome at either Minas Morgul or Evil Ones/ I may come calling in here every so often.
Oh and don't let this thread die its a good one and i'm sure once you've got some more members it will be brilliant or should i say awful (in the evil sense)

Gloam, like your history! It's cool!

And don't worry.. This thread won't die, not as long as I have breath left in my evil body. I like it here.. Nice and dark..

So, BT, I was thinking.. How'd you like a Pet Rock for Christmas? It could have a double purpose.. Pet Rock and baseball. We could get one to match the cave.

Offering to shoot me might not work so well as an incentive as you might imagine.

Well, Princess, I don't think we'll spend too much on victims. I was thinking more along the lines of keeping a register of everyone who comes in, and if they leave (), when they do so. Most of them won't leave. At least, not in the usual sense...

You could also make a list of the usual visitors, if you want to. Something like, in the past month=usual visitor. I'd say a members' list too, but there's only one balrog here right now so that'd be kinda pointless.

How do you think we could advertise this place?

Gloam, you know how much I'd love watching you work, but I've got my lair's 500th anniversary to think about, my wedding to plan, my wife to murder, and Gilder to frame for it. I'm swamped! (mega Points Of Wickedness if anyone can name that movie)
