Nit-Picky details\questions for writing stories...

I thought we could all use this to ask questions about minuscule details. Here...I'll start out first, Do elves really put things in their friends beds? (Spiders mice etc) If you know the answer please tell. And ask any kind of questions and someone has to know the answers. Good luck to all!

As young children I'm sure they are just as mischevious as any other human child out there.

Do Elves really need sleep/rest on such regualr basis as humans or is sleep more of a convention to pass the night?

TheE.I.Cebu, this is a great idea for a thread.

Kisby, you are probably right about Elves being mischievous as children. I am not sure about putting mice in people's beds, simply because I don't think even little Elves would want to harm innocent creatures. Not that they are prohibited, they simply would not want to. That's my idea, anyway.

Elf sleep, interesting. In TTT, Legolas doesn't seem to need any. He tells Aragorn and Gimli to sleep if you must , and stands guard himself, in this half-wakeful state. I bet you if you asked this in Books, you'd have a full-blown answer with quotes and all. I looked, but couldn't find any threads on the subject.

hmmm

Interestingly, JRRT doesn't say much about Elven children; it almost seems like there aren't any except in Gondolin.

Arwen is the daughter of Elrond, but almost out of convenience for the story.

I think that they would be like any other children; the carriage and dignity of elves is in their age and vitality, not any different upbrining i'll bet.

so you could have them pranking. Razz

its interesting what you said about elven children galadralorean. from some other sources (not tolkien, so i don't know how to take it) elves rarely had children. few had large families. and these children were treasured above all.

however, in LotR i think that any parent would keep their children out of such danger. most of the times spent in elven communities are in counsel and at war. i doubt you would find children there

Elves live forever. they may not be in such a hurry to have children. I wouldn't know, though, as i am not elvish. Razz

are there maps of lands to the east beyond the mountains? what is out there? somewhere I heard of blue mages. what are these?

There is a grander map but I forget where I saw it.

The Blue Istari are (I think) Alatar and Pallando, they are mentioned somewhere as coming to Middle Earth with Gandalf, Radagast, and Saruman. They supposedly travel off to the east instead of hanging around for the big show.

Here are some maps I found.

With Rhun and Near Harad

With artwork by John Howe

Arda-Third Age

Now, I have a question.
Confused: When people dwelt in caves, and presumably burned wood fires there, how did they keep from dying from CO poisoning?

thank you for the info

Frelga, are you asking about middle earth or our own history (as if they were different! lol) I don't know if anything in ME lit says what they do. However, common sense would tell them after the first attempt that it was bad to light fires inside an unventilated cave. I know that the dwarves had a very modern ventilation system of chimneys that allowed drafts to take smoke up.

In our own history the same occured, or they built the fire at the entrance I guess.

Eldfess, thank you. Yes, I was asking about our world. For my own story, I was thinking both ventilation shafts and lighting fire near entrance would be sensible.

I just posted on your OOC thread. I hope you don't mind. The story looked so great that I just could not resist! If I broke etiquette, I beg for forgiveness.

Back to the elf childern thing...because I just remembered some stuff that I had read in HOME: X Morgoth's Ring

It is true that elves didn't have many children, usually only one and the 7 sons of Fëanor was a grand exception. There was a range of sexual maturity for elves, and after a period of time any want for children passed. Elves tried, mostly sucessfully, to only have children during times of peace. So during war, or pending war there would be a lack of 'lil ones, because they liked to have both parents around for the child. Likewise, there were very few weddings during wartime. The children themselves, as of what Tolkien had written, either in notes or as fact, grew to complete maturity around the age of 100. By that time they were, what we could call, legal adults, and at about 50 they were at physical maturity. Elf children and men children were about the same for the first 5 years. THey looked, acted the same, just that elf children were prettier. At about 5-7 years old they elf children slowed down a bit physically, grew faster mentally (ie. having the whole Elven language mastered at like 6) and when men reached their peak at about 25-30, Elves were just starting to come into their own.

Fregla- I would assume that these caves are large and house many people? Not all caves are completly blocked off at one end, and there could easily be a wind current running under ground, keeping the CO2 levels down. Or, there could be such things crafted as a chimney like already suggested.

Thanks, Kisby. The cave I'm thinking about is fairly small and serves as a temporary shelter for travellers. I was considering the wizdom of having my character light a fire inside, and then it occurred to me that it must be possible, since people used to dwell in caves. Actually, I like the idea of having a second outlet, for ventilation and as an emergency exit.

Yet again MORE questions, just random and wondering questions, but this time I have 2:

In FOTR, was Lothlorien a PLANNED destination or did the Balrog force them to go there...

What level is the Houses of Healing on?

Thanks! theE.I.Cebu

Gandalf's orignal plan was to go through the Gap of Rohan and Lothlorien was totally out of the way for that. In that case no Lothlorien wasn't "planned". Once the decsion was made that they woulc have to get to the other side of the Misty Mountains, I think it would go without much say that a 're-fuel' trip to Lothlorien would not only be practical but refreshing.

Not sure about what level the Houses are on, but I'm pretty sure it's in the top 3.

Here's one...if it was the Rangers' job to protect the Shire\Hobbitville how did Sauruman build so much power and ultimately rule? (For what little time he did anyways.)
Thanks! Love GDF

GDF, hello and welcome! I have spent a delightful five minutes meditating over the meaning of your screen name. Wink

As for your question, I think the answer is in two parts. First, Saruman started by using Lotho's greed to infiltrate the Shire. As Farmer Cotton exlains:

Tolkien said:

and it seems he'd been selling a lot o' the best leaf, and sending it away quietly for a year or two. But at the end o' last year he began sending away loads of stuff, not only leaf. [...] A lot of men, ruffians mostly, came with great waggons, some to carry off the goods south-away, and others to stay. And more came. And before we knew where we were they were planted here and there all over the Shire, and were felling trees and digging and building themselves sheds and houses just as they liked. At first goods and damage was paid for by Pimple; but soon they began lording it around and taking what they wanted.

While the Rangers were protecting the Shire from foes that would freeze his heart, or lay his little town in ruin as Aragorn says of Butterbur, they did not stop the flow of refugees from troubles in the South, and mixed in with them were the ruffians. Also, the Rangers did not seem to go into the Shire itself very much. The troubles starting out looking like internal affairs of the Shire, and if the Rangers knew of them, they well may have chosen not to interfere.

The second part of the answer is that the worst of the trouble have begun after the Rangers rode away to join with Aragorn. As Butterbur tells the Travellers

In 'Homeward Bound' Tolkien said:

You see, we're not used to such troubles; and the Rangers have all gone away, folk tell me. I don't think we've rightly understood till now what they did four us. For there's been worse than robbers about. Wolves were howling round the fences last winter. And there's dark shapes in the woods, dreadful things that it makes the blood run cold to think of.

When the Rangers come back, along with Gandalf and the four hobbits, I am guessing that they deal with those "dreadful things". Gandalf declares that the Travellers are enough to deal with the Shire trouble, and he of course turns out to be right. It may have been important for Tolkien that the Shire is not saved from outside but takes care of itself, but this is only my speculation.

Anyway, I hope this makes sense. If not, you may want to ask this in Books. There are some amazing Tolkien scholars in there.

The houses that lay in the sixth circle of Minas Tirith, surrounded by lawns and trees, where the healers of Gondor did their work.

About Merry's kids: did he have kids? I know he at least had one son because it said that when he and Pippin left to visit Eomer in the appendices they gave their offices to their sons. But does it say anywhere what were their names, and have many he had?
Same for Pippin, did he have more kids than just Faramir I? Thanks!

Ladyofboxclocks:I looked, but haven't been able to find any spesific references. Oh well. I WILL keep looking though, because I now want to know too.

Everyone else: and here is a deep question...was there chocolate in Middle-Earth? I mean, here's how I see it... every self respecting Mary Sue has a breakdown every now and then, and what better way to fix it then with a nice piece of chocolate? Very obscure I know, but something I'd like to find out.
Thanks! GDF

Concerning the stapel needed to fix people's troubles in Middle Earth, I think that pipeweed meant as much to them as chocolate does to us now. Both pipeweed and chocolate are used at the appropriate times to relax the mind and help one forget his troubles. So you could say that pipeweed was the ancient form of chocolate. Gandalf himself was very much addicted to chocolate, as stated by Saruman: "Your love of the halfling's leaf has clearly slowed your mind." But then of course, when bogged down with the mission of saving the world from Sauron, who wouldn't become a primitive chocoholic?
Merry and Pippin were naturally obsessed with pipeweed. So, like the outcome of eating chocolate, they were incessantly "hyper". And they went through major chocolate-withdrawals while mulling about in Fangorn. Therefore, when they found barrels of 'Old Toby' in Orthanc, that was like taking a magical trip to Wonka Land!
Elves, tragically, took no fancy in smoking pipeweed. The correlation today would be people that have gorgeous figures and never touch chocolate. That is just sad.
And that's pretty much all I have time for. Hello to La Cebu!

Lol Eredolyn. I like the thought that pipeweed may be a substitute for chocolate, but to be perfectly honest, Pipeweed was smoking. It reminds me of smoking marijuana the way you put it. Wink "Your love of the halfling's leaf has clearly clearly slowed your mind" and incessantly hyper sounds like the effects of smoking marijuana. Nice try though. Also normal cigarette smoke. Tolkien was a smoker himself, so that was probably why most of his character smoked. It clears the mind, and when they are stressed they light one up. Wink

Gorgeous_Delay_Fish, thanks for your reply! I checked with the Book Forum though, and they said that information was never given. So now I have the fun task of making it up. Big Grin Thank you though!

boxy[] - that was a cool question Smile Never thought about it like that, myself!

Yes, I think pipeweed was for smoking only, and probably closest ( in Tolkien's mind ) to his pipe tobacco. Hopefully not dagga, as marijuana is called down here Big Grin

Yes, I never said it was marijuana or 'Dagga' it just sounded like the side-effects of it. Wink But I agree, hopefully that wasn't what Tolkien was talking about... Wink

Banshees? Um... no idea. I believe that is Ireland lore. Anyone here know about Ireland legends?

My next question is...Weather at Rivendell? Was is spring\summer there all year round? (I've read the books, you'd think I'd know)
See I want to write this story where a beautiful blonde chick falls into Rivendell and fall in Love with Legolust and.... I'm Just KIDDING!!!
But I really would like to know about Rivendell weather. Does it ever snow, or get chilly, or rain, or anything?
Thanks again all!
Love the GDF
Plus...any hints for Elfie and her bashees?

GDF-The only thing I found was in FOTR page 272 "It was a cold grey day near the end of December. The East Wind was streaming through the bare branches of the trees, and seeting in the dark pines on the hills. Ragged clouds were hurrying overhead, dark and low."

Now, whether that means it actually Rains there, I have no idea. Does it rain there? I would think that it would.

Here's a question to add also... Strider does not go to the feast that welcomes Frodo back (FOTR) even though Arwen is there. He was talking to Elrohir and Elladan. They had important news for him. What was that news?

Thanks again! Love La Cebu

Err...hi. Smile
As to the weather of Rivendell, I have a thought...
In Lothlorien, which is referred to along with Rivendell as one of the last strongholds of the elves, the weather goes through the regular seasons, as evidenced by the blossoming mallorn trees. But it also reflects its guardian, Galadriel, both ancient and timeless.

Elrond halfelven is far more in tune with the contrast of mortality/immortality. His brother and brother's descendants are mortal, and his daughter will refuse the eternity over the sea. His sanctuary would likely reflect more of his character, being untouched, and watching the mortal world fall away.

This is simply speculation, as I haven't read the book in some time. Sigh.

PS~If this sounds a little nuts, it's because it's about one o'clock am, a time I try to avoid. It does strange things to me... Rolling Eyes
