Rune and DD:The Leatherers Lair of N00blieness V2 c/o H4x0r
Welcome To The Leatherers Lair of N00blieness
The Lair was found in a mountain on the outskirts of TORC by Amrunelen and
Ddraigwen, commonly known as Rune and DD,
and we have opened it up to n00bies to learn their way around TORC (The One
Ring.Com was the old name for this site), and to field any questions they
may have.
In this first thread we have tried to give you links to some of the best
threads to read to learn about TORC, it's people and how to become a good
poster.
But first a little about each of us:
DD: I am originally from Wales but I now live in the United States. I found TORC after The Gathering in Toronto. Since then I have realised that I need no other Tolkien web site, everything I could possibly need is here on TORC; great people, fascinating
debate, news, there really is nowhere quite like it. On TORC you can normally find me in The Bird and Baby (Talk), Languages, Books, Movies and The One Ring Forum, I also lurk pretty much everywhere else.
When not TORCing (which isn't very often), I enjoy reading, writing strange parodies and my music. My other online interest is Narnia.
Rune: I'm originally from Pennsylvania, USA and, well...still am here. I don't even quite remember how I first found TORC. I think it was while randomly Googling for LotR sites after seeing FOTR in the movie theater and then reading LotR a couple of months later. I absolutly loved the books the first time I read them. Anyway, after stumbling across TORC, I am happy to say that it is my favorite Tolkien/LotR site on the Web. When I'm not glued to my computer chair, I enjoy reading, writting, drawing, and music, among other things. Here on TORC you'll mainly find me in The Bird and the Baby: Talk, The Prancing Pony, Alliances and Guilds, and Tom's House: The lighter side, but I visit and post in almost every forum on TORC.
Now that you know a little about us, on to the important stuff.
These are the threads that are the most important to read, they may be
long but they will help you to understand how this MB works:

Problems you have found with TORC can be posted

. Check
the first post to see if the problem has already been reproted.
Remember the following: If you are under
18
you are not allowed to
reveal your age, location, real name or anything that could lead people to
discover the real you. It's for your own safety,
we would like to think that no dangerous people post on TORC, but we can't
stop them from reading.
Follow the instructions of the staff (founders, admins and moderators), they
are not out to get you and are working in the best interest of the site.
Listen to what they say and follow instructions, it will make your time here
much nicer.
If you have any questions or queries about anything please feel free to post
them here. Our job is to make your time here more enjoyable by letting you
in on the tricks of TORC.
So, if you like what you have read and would like to join our Lair, post a
little bit about you, why you love Tolkien, how you find TORC and something
completely random just for fun

I'm pretty sure there was only the three. I shall put their names back up.
It does kinda suck that the hacker targetted certain threads, but we shall not be overcome and shall continue with our best foot forward, as soon as we work out which one the best is |

I hope so too... Even though most of our n00bs don't post anymore, we lost the list and can't really remember all of them. |

Ahh yes, but then I think that happens to most Adopters.
For every ten n00bs maybe only one will stay. But then it takes time. |

Abbot said:
What is the meaning of Life?
What is the meaning of life?
The meaning of life is to increase fitness
This is the quick answer to this fundamental question. In order to start giving the long answer, we should first examine each of the key terms in this sentence:
meaning:
a very complex concept which can have many interpretations. In this context we will assume it signifies the "why" (origin - past) or "wherefore" (purpose - future) of life, but in a way our answer also may explain us the "what" (definition - present).
life:
in this context it normally means our present being here on earth, but this may be generalized to include life as a particular type of organization and development characterizing biological organisms, and even more universally as organization and development in general.
fitness:
intuitively, a system, configuration or "state-of-affairs" is fit if it is likely that that configuration will still be around in the future. The more likely we are to encounter that system, the more fit it is. Though there are many ways to be fit, depending on the exact situation, we may say that fit systems tend to be intrinsically stable, adapted and adapting to their surroundings, capable of further growth and development, and/or capable of being (re)produced in great quantities.
Fitness is the most important and tricky term of the answer to define. It can only be defined in terms which are not obvious themselves, and so need further definitions, and so on. One can hope that after a few rounds of definitions, the meaning will become sufficiently intuitive to be satisfactory for most readers. The whole of Principia Cybernetica Web can be viewed as an attempt to provide a sufficiently extensive semantic networks of concepts clarifying concepts (such as "fitness").
increase:
this should be obvious enough. The use of the term "increase" implies that the concept to which it is attributed, "fitness", is to some degree quantifiable (see e.g. a definition in terms of transition probabilities). Note, however, that it is everything but obvious how to do this: fitness is difficult to measure, and is relative, depending on situation, environment and moment in time. At the very least, we assume that there exists a partial ordering, i.e. some configurations are more fit than others. A more general form of the answer is "not to decrease fitness": in some circumstances it may be good enough to keep fitness the way it is. Increase of fitness determines a preferred direction of evolution.
We may conclude by paraphrasing the answer in the following way: the purpose of (living) organization is to continuously increase future probabilities of encountering this same type of organization. The argumentation for this can be found in the variation and selection principles of evolution.
The above definition has been criticized as being overly reductionist, trying to reduce higher, "spiritual" meanings to mere biology. Although the concept of fitness originated in biology, its meaning here is much wider. It can be argued that our higher mental faculties and values are direct extensions of the general concept of fitness.

Why is the sky blue?
The sun's rays hit the Earth's atmosphere, where the light is scattered by nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the air. The blue wavelength of this light is affected more than the red and green wavelengths, causing the surrounding air to appear blue. At sunset, the sun's light passes farther through the atmosphere, deflecting and decreasing the blue in the air. Scattering by dust particles and pollution in the air causes the sunset to appear red.
Abbot said:
Why are we here?
Why Are We Here?
Albert Einstein reflected on the purpose of man’s existence when he said, "Strange is our situation here upon earth. Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine purpose. From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: That we are here for the sake of others, … for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day, I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of people, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself to give in return as much as I have received."
Abbot said:
What does Amrunelen's name mean?
Amrun- east or sunrise elen- star herefore, East Star or Sunrise Star (the one I typically go with)
Abbot said:
Why am I here?
Why are you here? As in here at the messageboard? at TORC? That, only you can answer.
Abbot said:
Why is the grass green?
Grass appears green because all of the colors in the rainbow are absorbed into the leaves of the grass except green.
Abbot said:
What do you suggest for my intrests?
Your interests? Well, what are your interests and I can suggest threads that may have something to do with them.
Abbot said:
Why?
Because.
Abbot said:
Why?
Because I said so.
Abbot said:
Why?
Because of the answers to the last to questions.
I should win a prize for answering all of those.
Anything else?
