GUILD MOTTO: We spread good cheer and bum free beer!
GUILD PLEDGE: As a member of the Grand High Mystic Society for the Preservation of the Bardic Traditions I do affirm that I shall endeavor to present a cheerful and courteous attitude to all I encounter both on and off the TORC boards, To assist all newbies to become acclimated with the conventions of conduct here at TORC , To assist them to become upstanding members of the TORC community and to support fellow guild members in both posting and creative efforts.
TO JOIN THE BARDS' GUILD
To become a member of the Grand High Mystic Society for the preservation of the Bardic Traditions post an ABC poem in the Apprentice Bard Auditions thread which can be found in the Prancing Pony or here . (See the thread for examples from past auditions)
The poem should be in an ABC format where the first word of each line or stanza begins with succeeding letters of the alphabet. The theme or subject of such poems should be concerning the life of a bard or some clearly Tolkien based topic. Rhyming in the poem is optional.
Post the completed poem in the Audition thread where it will be reviewed by one of the Bards' Council members. Upon approval and acceptance the candidate becomes an Apprentice Bard awaiting induction.
Apprentice Bards will be inducted into the Guild at the end of the next Guild Festival. To be inducted at the rank of Journeyman Bard, an accepted Apprentice will post a poem in the next Guild Festival that complies with the stated theme for that festival. Posting an Role Play performance piece that complies with the stated theme of that festival is the method for moving up in the Guild Ranks which are as follows:

Bard Exemplar
Master Bard
Bard of Renown - at this rank a member is permitted to chose a personal title
Additional Rankings
Dark Bard is awarded to any member reaching the rank of Master Bard and showing one of the Black Emblems as their alliance designation

- Each entry must be about a recognisable event from canon history of the chosen group as written by Tolkien. (Orcs excepting, as there is little written of their history.)
- At least one must be a poem. The remaining two MAY be in prose, such as with the YarnSpinner's Ball in the summer 2003 festival.

The door to the main taproom swings in and a figure steps from the bright summer day, letting her eyes grow accustom to the dim lighting . Slowly she walks into the room and turns taking in all the bare walls and the lack of furniture. She shakes her head and strains to listen to see if anyone else has come in yet. She holds up a piece of parchment in her hand and holding it to a light she looks it over again.
Yup this is the address I was given! So it must be the place, but I wonder where everyone else is?
Hello??
Vana calls out to the emptiness
The room echos back at her, she drops the parchment on the bare bar and rolls up her sleeves moving behind the bar as she then ties her long blonde locks back over her shoulders. She grabs a bar rag and starts dusting off the counters and wiping the mirrors. She thinks to herself, I know this will be a great home once we get it all set up and ready. I cant wait for others to come in and help with furnishings and homey touches.

Aerin slowly walks downstairs, braiding her still-wet raven hair and fighting back a yawn. She is wearing a simple cotton dress, green as the summer leaves outside, and thin black ankle boots, well padded on the inside.
Tying off her braid and winding it about her head, she enters the main hall and stops, smiling at Vana.
"Hello, my old friend! I'm glad to see the directions I sent everyone weren't too hard!"
She sweeps an arm, including all the hall and, by extension, the entire building.
"Lovely place, isn't it? Don't you think the decorators did an excellent job?"
Grinning, she finishes getting her hair out of the way and gets a mop, beginning to scrub the floor.

Andu creeps in silently, feeling like the prodical son, returning home in shame after such a long time.
"At least it's a new thread, they might not notice I've been gone for so long"
Seeing Vana and Aerin working so hard, Andu grabs a broom and starts wrestling with the spider webs in the nooks and crannys of the empty room

Looking at the membership rolls Anorast sees many, many new faces since last he'd walked the halls of the Bards. A look of slight surprise touched his face when he saw his own name had not been moved to the rank of those wandering, for the old elf had been gone many, many seasons, and missed many, many festivals. But there he was, and now, here he stood. Now Anorast just had to relax, sit back, and get back to keeping an eye on the Council.
"Has someone remembered to restock our supplies around here?"
called out the thirsty elf.

Aerin mock-scowls at the lounging Guruth and tosses him a dishrag.
"Yes, this place comes new with a full supply of food and drinks... but the dishes still get dusty!" |

Vana smiles to herself watching Guru's face as Aerin throws the dish rag at him. You'd think she had told him the beer was all gone. She then turns and acknowledges the arrival of Dubs and Andu.

Thank you, TORC Angel!

Holding up the rag, Guru raises an eyebrow at Vana, then looks at Aerin.
"It's glad to see there are so many new folks around here,"
Guru commented in a casual tone.
"This'll be a perfect job for them."
Tossing the rag towards the sink the old elf rummages in a cupboard, finally emerging with several dusty bottles of mead, complete with Bard's Guild Brew marks.
"So, Aerin, what's the plans for the next festival?"
asked Anorast, pulling a couple chairs up around a nearby table.

Aerin chuckles and shakes her head at her friend's "superior" antics. She finishes scrubbing the back corner and takes a break to join him.
"New festival ideas, hmm? You're right, it has been long enough... perhaps a summer celebration?" |

IC:
Rho entered quickly into the new home of the Bard’s Guild to the site of several of bards busy cleaning up the new place. Standing quietly for a moment the shieldmaiden took in the site of her fellow Mithril Knights Vana and Guru. It had been along time since she’d either seen her friends or had fought along side them in battle and for a moment she smiled inwardly. There were others in the room too, Aerin, and PB whom she knew, and two others that she had never met.
Aerin and Guru seemed to be discussing something of importance and as Rho moved more towards the center of the room she heard Aerin’s words…
"New festival ideas, hmm? You're right, it has been long enough... perhaps a summer celebration?"
Rho finally spoke up and asked, “Just how long ago was the last Bards Fesitval?”
OC:
It’s been along time since I’ve done any RP and I feel a bit rusty. Could someone please fix the title under my name above? It should read Warrior Bard of the White Tower.

Vana was returning from the kitchen and still smiling about the antics of Guru when she looked up and spotted Aerin sitting with him pouring some drinks into several glasses. She starts to move in their direction to imbibe in the same drink. Suddenly she sees a figure moving over to Aerin and Guru and hears her say.
“Just how long ago was the last Bards Fesitval?”
Vana's jaw dropped open as she recognised the voice that accompanied the now familiar figure standing there
Rho is that really you?
Vana smiled as the two seated friends suddenly became aware of her speaking to them.
It has been a very long time dear. I am so glad to see that you've returned.
Vana moves up to Rho and gives her a warm welcoming hug and squeeze.
With a smile Vana adds
Did someone mention a new Festival soon??

"Rho!"
Anorast smiled with joy as he saw his old friend, and fellow Mithril Knight, walk up to them. Too long had she been gone, not only from the fireside bardic gatherings, but from all contact. The elf had sent messengers far and wide through the lands but no word had reached him of Rho.
"It is wonderful to see you back among us, my good friend!"
cried Anorast, giving the woman a friendly hug.
"I've looked forward to this day ever since you left."
Turning back to Vana and Aerin, a large grin covered Guru's face. However, at the mention of when the last festival was, Anorast started twiddling his fingers, whistling, and looking about the room. He was certainly not the one to answer the question since he'd been gone from the halls of Music for so long. However, his memories were very much alive, and Guru felt it necessary to raise his voice regarding the next festival.
"I would say a summer festival sounds fantastic,"
said the old elf.
"A nice, relaxed, small event, little fanfare, thrown for a nice time. The theme should definitely be dancing, with entries suitable as songs.
"What do you say?"
finished Anorast, looking about at the small group.
Recalling Rho's comment about her title being wrong on the great wall of the Bards, Anorast idly looked at the entry under his own name. The title he'd chosen was there, but he did note a slight admission.
"Aerin, would you be a darling and put me down as being eligable for Warrior/Bard status?" |

Travel-stained but hopeful for rest and friends, Lith entered. She was not disappointed by what she saw. Vana, Aerin, PB, a few others she wasn’t sure she’d officially met yet… Rho! Inconceivable, but there she was.
The ranger hung back for the space of a heartbeat, unsure whether or not Rho would remember her.
Anaiu however, who had sniffed her out as soon as she and Lith had entered, had no such inhibitions and easily beat Lith to the knight. The huge, silvery hound was soon at Rho’s side, nibbling her boot edges and woofing/chuffing happily like a pup a fraction of her age. As she raised her head for a pat her eyes begged a question about the furry companion which had followed Rho before.
“It’s good to see you again Rho!”
Lith caught up with the hound in time to hear the outlines of the next festival and nodded her agreement.
Hello everyone! I think I’ve missed a bit here though. Where will the festival be held? The Pot? Calenrod? |

Salvia Burrows and her family wander in to check out the new thread. She looks at Laureanna's library and clucks her tongue, remembering the great festivals of yore. The most recent festival, poor thing, was only a page long, and set in the middle of winter (both in season and in heart, what with the loss of the great Bard's true love). She recalls that in 2003 there was a Second Annual TORC Midsummer All Guild Fair, and wonders if a revival of that event would be considered the "Third More or Less Annual TORC Midsummer All Guild Fair". Perhaps she'll see Laureanna there.

Aerin looked at the rolls herself and noticed the errors. Going over to a certain velvet-lined niche in one of the walls, she sang softly, a gently pure vocalisation. An astute listener would notice that her voice held a pleading tone. Slowly, reluctantly, the air in the niche shimmered and rippled as the dragonharp appeared.
Aerin whispered,
"Agarak? I need to make a couple changes in the membership rolls. Would you be a darling and do it soon?"
The elf ducked a little and grinned, as a small puff of indignant smoke rolled out at her.
"I know, I know. Thank you!"
She returned to her friends, bowing ironically.
"His Lordship Agarak will make the changes."
Shooting an exasperated and worried glance over her shoulder at the niche, she continued,
"He needs to be polished again and I should do it before the new festival... it should be interesting! He's never let me polish him before, it's always been Erinhue's task, but since he's away, it falls to me." |

Rho smiled as a stunned Vana made here way over to where the shieldmaiden was standing, and she eagerly returned the hug so generously given.
“Yes, it’s really me,”
she answered just in time.
"It is wonderful to see you back among us, my good friend!"
cried Anorast, giving the woman a friendly hug.
"I've looked forward to this day ever since you left."
Smiling, Rho answered him quietly,
“I wasn’t sure I’d return, but thank you, I’ve really missed this place.”
As Anorast turned to Aerin, Rho instantly became aware of another old friend at her side, nibbling at her boot edges and seeking a long awaited pat on the head. The shieldmaiden knelt down and said a private hello to the silver hound. When she stood back up there was another old friend now standing close.
“It’s good to see you again Rho!”
Her smile remained as she replied
“Lith, it’s good to see you too. I still remember some of our adventures long ago over at the Lucky Fortune Inn. Would you like a drink? I could sure use a beer!”
When the two reached the bar Rho watched as Aerin talked briefly to Agarak. It was odd, too odd, to see the ol’ harp without Erinhue. No, she decided, it was sad.
Rho then moved behind the counter and got herself a beer and just as she was about to ask Lith what she’d like, the Mithril Knight heard an enthusiastic Vana inquire as to when a festival could happen.

Gloam strides into the new Bards Guild. His cloak swishing gently around his heavy boots which clonked on the rough wooden floor.
The shapeshifters head swivelled around to take in the surroundings and his mouth curled up into a soft smile when he saw how the other Bards had already arived and were cleaning up.
He picked up a feather duster and wafted away the last remanants of dust from some high shelf.
The ancient being walked over to the group stood at the bar and heard talk of a new festival. Sasha, his familiar and soul companion, the black wolf had followed him in and now lay on the floor, her muzzle resting on her front paws.
"So," he started, "A new festival, eh? What happened to our induction from the last one." he laughed.
"No. It will be good to have a new festival. It is unfortunate that the last one never really took off." he shook his head and smiled again. "I follow the same lines of thought as Vana . When will our Summer Celebration begin?" |

Anorast had fallen silent, watching his old friends reunite. Yet after a few moments the conversation returned to the next festival and the old elf decided to speak up.
"Yes, a summer festival,"
said Anorast loudly. After getting everyone's attention the old elf continued.
"I'm having a thought here. We all know summer is the best time to travel, to journey to and from distant lands. Among us here are several who have been journeying far and wide. Let us make travels and journeys the theme of the festival!"
"And, as added spice,"
Anorast continued,
"let us hear them not as poetry, but as song. What say you all?" |

Rho took a long and much need drink of ale and let off just as the new visitor arrived. From what he said she knew he was a bard, but not one she'd ever seen before. But his eagerness to help out with the feather duster was not missed.
The wolf who traveled with the stranger stuck a cord deep within her and memories of her own wolf companion, Chirion, who was no longer with her slowly flooded her mind.
'So many changes' she thought to herself. But these thoughts were quickly interupted when Anorast spoke up. When he was finished the shieldmadien answered.
"I think those are both an excellent idea! Do you think others will show up if we do have a festival? I might be able to persuade Bryttar if we really needed more folks."

It's been long since I've sat in the company of fellow bards...
thought Dubs as she sipped her black Uruk coffee and watched her little orclet terrorising the kitchens with the bar-faes.
And many new faces, even since I was a new face!
The familiar roar of bard-song, talk and decorating, which usually happened when a new place was erected, was comforting and Dubs watched the road from her perch on the windowsill as others came back for a much needed reunion.

A side door opens from the stables and a white-blond Elf steps through, his traditional traveling cloak cast over one arm. A wide grin spreads across his face as he spots many of the older Bards.
Well well, the things a new thread will turn up. From what dusty corner did you get churned up, Rho? And Anorast as well, my my, we have been digging deep. By all means Rho, please excavate Bryttar from their hiding place
A festival does sound good. And maybe this time we can get through the Rank Awards.
Any suggestions for a theme? Travel perhaps?

Ahhhhhhhhhh.....travel sounds like a very good topic to have a festival on. I also like the idea of delivering it as a song more then just a poem. |

Travelling sounds good. Most people go on holiday at this time of year so inspiration for that topic should be at a high.
Song, eh?
Well. I've never been good at writing songs but I would definitely give it go.
By the way. Those of us who did the things to get initiated as a Journeyman Bard in the last Festival.
What will happen to us at the end of this Festival. If we do the things needed to rise a rank in this one, do we get initiated as a Bard Exemplars?
Just curious

LOL I've churned up from corners that...well never mind, the important thing is I returned.
Gloam, I would think that you should move up before the next festival starts to reflect you proper rank. Though I have no offical say over these types of things.
As for Bryttar I'll see what I can do. It's been so long I don't know if I can still long on with him.
Any ideas as to when the festival can/will/should start?

Well it looks like I can!
The weary Rohirim had finally reached his destination, the new Bards Inn. A few loose strands of blonde hair clung to a beard that was much longer than the young man liked.
As he entered the Inn he quickly saw Vana and Guru and his cousin Rho. All Mithril Knights like himself. Smiling he made his way over to the bar and received a welcomiing drink from Rho. She also handed him a small package which he quickly pocketed. With his friendly manner and calm voice he polietly greeted Vana and Guru as well as greeting the new bards he hadn't met.
