OOC: The Mithril Knights (Updated 11/29/09!!)

Postby Mithril Knights » Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:45 am

This is the out-of-character thread for TheMithril Knights Warriors Guild RP stories on TORC.

Due to the advanced stage of this thread, no new characters will be accepted (current MKs and approved guests may jump on any time). Once the current crisis is resolved and the Mithril Knights have once again saved Middle earth from certain doom, we will be ready to hear new petitions to the guild. Please see the website for information on becoming a Mithril Knight in Training.

There you go, everyone.

Those with access, please edit the first post as you see fit.

Vana, I guess Dirk is a Bard. Since our last conversation on the subject elswhere, I looked it up, and I am on the Bard's roll call, although I am missing my Warrior/Bard designation (Hue?).

Anyway. I think we should use this OOC from now on.

Thanks for letting me vent my extra energy in this constructive manner. Though I'm not done yet. One more post to go - the first one for the RP. It's nearly there, but I have to work tonight. So look for it tomorrow, maybe.
Rest In Peace, Dirk. 2002-2013

I have been interested in the Mithril Knights for some time, but I can't utilize Private Messages and I didn't want to clutter any other threads with questions about joining in. I know you said this is just for all the Knights-in-Training and already established Knights, so I'm just asking how I am to go about entering, or when an appropriate time to do so would be.

First off, Sirion, don't worry about popping in to express interest. Unfortunately I'm not the one who'd be able to say how someone joins the MK's at this time, and I'm not entirely sure who is. I'd imagine Tempest or Erinhue will pop in, and they'll be able to give a better answer. Nice to see that there are people interested in this story.

I cannot express how much I'm looking forward to writing again!

Hey Sirion! Thanks for your interest in the Mithril Knights! You've caught us at an interesting time, since our Guildmaster Elbren has been absent now for a few years, and she was the one who handled all the initiations. I suppose Erinhue or I could do it, but it's been so long since I went through it myself that I kind of forget how it was done. Any thoughts from other knights?

Hello Sirion. I echo what Tempest said about it being an odd time for your inquiry. I suppose it was bound to happen, what with the awesome stuff the guildmembers have written so far. My $.02: this was Elbren's baby through and through, so I'm hesitant at first to do initiaions and such with out her. But, there are many who were here from the beginning (or very early on, at least) like Tempest and Hue, and a few others who haven't confirmed for writing in this story (Calling Orodreth111 and IloveEowyn!) who have read and discussed and written most of the Knights' doings and would do a fine job carrying on very closely to Elbren's vision for the Guild. Here's an idea: maybe we could appoint a council of maybe 3 of the senior members to collude on decisions like this (and other things that will shape the direction of the Guild) to act in Elbren's stead?

Personally, I don't see any issues with reviving the application and KiT tale process for new members, mainly because I think those of us who are left have a pretty good idea of the quality expected from an MK writer and could carry on that tradition.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Welcome Sirion!! Being one of the youngest (time wise) of the Mithril Knights, I am thrilled to see that there is still interest in becoming a serious Role Playing Member. I heartily agree that The older (long time) members of the Knights are the ones who can make that judgment call. I do hope that there are still going to be openings for new members that come along and that the Knights can continue to find interested writers who would love to be a part of this sort of quest. Don't give up, be diligent in your quest if you are seriously interested. It will take some time and commitment on your part. But it is well worth it!! :D

Okay, it's up. I hope it was okay to use Aglanor as a perspective to tell the beginning of the story from. He doesn't seem to have been around for a while.

Please edit mistakes if you find them. (And let me know what I got wrong, unless it's just a misspelling, then you can just fix it.)

Here's what we need next:

Everyone now needs to get their character from wherever they were, just after the battle(s) (which I decided was in the middle of Winter), to early Spring at the Mirkwood Guildhouse. I hope I have given some ideas as to what we could all have been doing (pursuing retreating Red Hammer, escorting the dead to their homelands, helping in the reconstruction, recovering from temporarily becoming a homicidal maniac :P ).

Bring your character all the way up to, but please don't begin, the council where the stranger is to plead his case.

We also need to decide where he's from, what he brought with him, and what's the problem in his home. Then I can take that information and do the beginning post of the council, with his testimony.

Off to go get Dirk up to speed.

Oh, and as I said in the first post, I think it would be a good idea to kinda begin fresh with our characters, even describing them physically. I know that many of them are well-known and have been described time and again, but it would be nice to have a coherent, complete tale that doesn't rely too heavily on assuming the reader's knowledge of all of our past Rp's.

Thanks!

Heya,
If you were to accept new members again, here is a wayward martial artist who is very interested too.
In fact I've wanted to ask it a bit earlier but I was rather scared off by the:'Membership in the Mithril Knights Warrior's Guild is now closed ' notice at the beginning of the Red Dawn thread, so I didn't dare to ask.

I second that at the end of Claymore's post; it was one factor in me holding back my interest. But I am truly interested, and I suppose I can thank Erinhue for that, as he put up a reference to the Mithril Knights in the Bard's Guild.

Sirion and Claymore,

As much as I want to see this Guild grow, let's not get too ahead of ourselves. Deciding to go forward in such a way without Elbren is a pretty big deal, as this was her baby. And that decision has yet to be made. Also, if and when it is decided to open up for new members, the appication process is relatively rigorous compared to pretty much anything else on TORC. People have been rejected (respectfully, of course, and always with the option to try again once the writing has improved).

That being said, this thread is not an Alliances and Guilds thread, but rather the OOC for an RP. I'm going to edit the first post to include information about membership and new members. EDIT: I went ahead and started a new Guild Thread in the Alliances and Guilds forum to discuss these things. Please see first post for a link.
I'm sorry to cut you off, but I think we'd like to keep this thread as on-topic as possible.

If there is interest in further non-RP discussion, perhaps we can ressurect the Guild thread in A&G.

Again, I apologize if this seems unkind of me. It's certainly not anyone's goal to make the Mithril Knights a closed society or clique; and I'm sure that we'll eventually open for new membership. It's just a matter of making sure we do so in a manner in keeping with Elbren's original vision.

In the meantime, I suggest you find and read Elbren's first post in the old A&G thread(s). It should help with understanding where we are coming from when we site Elbren and her vision for this unique Guild. And please, do keep up with the current story, and read as much of the old ones as you can find, in case we do begin to take Knights-in-Training, it'll be easier to jump in.

Thanks for your interest,

-Alex

Sorry for replying to my own post.

But I just finished reading Tempest's and Guru's first additions to the RP. I knew it was a good idea to push to get this going, even if it were just to have a bunch of brand-new AMAZING stuff to read!

One note. I put all that stuff in the first posts about describing the characters not only for other readers, but also for myself. It's been so long, I'm not sure I'd even know where to look for info on the look, heritage, history, weaponry, steed, skills, etc, of everyone's character. I'm sure you both will be getting to it as it seems fit in the story, but I just wanted to make sure you knew why I asked for it in the first place.

I'm working on my first post for Dirk. Since at the moment he'll only be in one RP, I have been rereading many of my old postings for him. I've found quite a bit of jumping around and some inconsistencies. I'm hoping to consolidate what's happened to him in various other RPs as his ersatz history and attempt to form one coherent character. It may take a couple of days, but I'm so jazzed about this, I'm sure I'll have it up within the week.

Lastly, anyone got any ideas they'd like to share about our stranger, his home, his troubles, and whatever nasty thing he carried with him?

I've got a rather fanciful idea for our stranger and his "item". Yesterday I was struck by the idea of hunting down a dragon. Now, I haven't yet gone back into the Hobbit to see whether Smaug was the last dragon around, but I know it mentioned that there had been dragons in the North, left over from the fall of Angband. I'm not sure if this has been done, and frankly, I'm not even sure if my own idea is a good one.

SB, it's always interesting trying to keep track of characters. I recall my sister, before she stopped writing, had made a complete division between her character in the Mithril Knights, and her character elsewhere. A situation in a different RP conflicted with this one, and she had to separate the two to keep consistent. Myself, I've found it's easier to fudge a bit...that, and occasionally I've had to start over with certain characters.

Btw, everyone, looking for stuff for my post I had to reread back quite a ways into the old thread...and that was fantastic writing!

Guru: I LOVE IT!

If I recall, there wasn't anything that said that Smaug was the last dragon ever, just the last seen in Middle-earth since the old days.

So perhaps this stranger is a ranger who was one of a contingent of men who were working on rebuilding Fornost and while digging a foundation maybe found a dragon egg. Perhaps they removed the egg and continued to work. Unbeknownst to them, touching the egg woke up mama who had been hibernating for an age in the permafrost of the remnants of the Iron Mountains to the north. Now she has returned to find the nest destroyed and the egg missing. In her anger, she demolishes the partially-constructed tower that was being built and is now stalking the north searching for egg and reaking havoc.

So obviously, that's an idea I think I could run with.

But I don't want to stifle anyone else's ideas either. I know that Tempest at least had some thoughts. I think we should hear another idea or two, then vote on it.

BTW, who is your sister? See I barely remember anything from way back then. Which is why I need the reminders. :?

Great writing gentlemen! I'm enjoying catching up with all this!

You know, I think originally I was thinking that we would head East following the trail of the Red Hammer, or perhaps encounter a different set of problems with the Knights of the Silmaril, but now that I really reflect, I like the idea of going North to deal with a dragon. It's something completely different and unrelated (well, at least for the moment) to the Red Hammer storyline, and therefore we have more freedom to do whatever we desire with it.

I don't know about the dragon egg idea, but what about the reference to Cold-Drakes, that is, fire-less dragons that lived in the North. I've quotes from the Encyclopedia of Arda about them below.

"Now the least mighty [dragons] - yet they were very great beside the Men of those days - are cold as in the nature of snakes and serpents, and of them a many having wings go with the uttermost noise and speed..."
Turambar and the Foalókë
in The History of Middle-earth vol. II The Book of Lost Tales II
Lesser dragons; those of dragon-kind who did not have the ability to make fire.

They were used by Morgoth in the wars of the First Age, though no specific mention of them in this period remains in Tolkien's published work. After the War of Wrath, in which most would have perished, some few seem to have escaped into the northern regions of Middle-earth, beyond the Grey Mountains.

As the millennia passed, their numbers grew, until they became a serious threat in the later centuries of the Third Age to the Dwarves that mined the Grey Mountains. In the year 2589 of the Third Age, Dáin I, King of Durin's Folk, and his second son Frór were slain at the gates of their halls by a Cold-drake. The attacks of these fearsome creatures persuaded the Dwarves to migrate eastwards from the Grey Mountains, and it was soon afterwards that their realms in the Iron Hills and at Erebor were established.

Of the history of the Cold-drakes after this period we are given no hint. Four hundred years later, at the time of Bilbo Baggins' journey to Erebor, they seem to have left the Grey Mountains (at least, Gandalf makes no mention of them when describing the dangers of that region). It is possible that the Orcs who colonised the Mountains after the departure of the Dwarves drove them back into the cold wastes to the north, but we can do no more than speculate on their ultimate fate.

Any thoughts?

That sounds really great Tempest!! I love idea too of going somewhere that is almost forgotten in the pages of Arda.

SB his sister is Elenath. She was a Mithril Knight as well. But I don't think she comes to TORC any longer. She has been greatly missed here.

I am also working on my post for the new thread. It may take me some time to iron out all the things I want in it and keeping it the quality as is due the Mithril Knights.

Yes, my sister is Elenath, and though I doubt it'll happen, I may try to drag her back into here when I see her this weekend...

To be perfectly honest, I'd never thought of the back story behind this dragon idea. All I knew was that I'd never heard of it being done before. When I read the first post I automatically saw the "item" as being something from a dragon, a tooth, a claw, or a bright, fresh scale. It fits what has been written so far.

The one thing I've always enjoyed about dragons is their hordes...I must be partly dwarf. You never know what you'll find...and finding and discovering the treasures in dragon caves is very exciting. There are some specific items I've got in mind, and hope to integrate into the storyline.

The one thing that just came to me is that we shouldn't limit ourselves to a single dragon. Possibly the first part of the story involves a particular worm, but the adventure could move from there, into the goblin infested Grey Mountains, finally following the ancient withdraw mentioned in Tempest's post up into the far north. This adventure could be driven by any sort of things, but my personal favorite is the lure of treasure...the tales of what lies further on....

Tempest, you are a true gem to collaborate with! You took a vague idea, researched a little and gave us back a fantastic idea. And an original one, to boot! I'm not sure if anyone has written an RP dealing with cold drakes or that region of ME. Also, you make a good point about it being a completely separate storyline. That way, we don't "mess with" the long-standing Mithril Knight war stories with the RH and KoS. Plus, being a separate and specific story, it has a chance to see its way to a conclusion, another rarity for TORC.

If we are in agreement, then once I get Dirk up to speed. Then I'll write one more post under the Mithril Knights ID - the testimony of our stranger. Then we can be off.

Guru, even if Elenath doesn't want to participate fully, at least try to get her to start lurking and giving you feedback on how we are doing. (if she's like the rest of us, eventually she'll have to post, resistance is futile) Seriously, maybe we could get a cameo out of her at the guildhouse or somewhere on the road?

Vana remember it wasn't a call to all MK's, only a gathering of those who happened to be at the guildhouse at that time. I did that to explain why there won't be more than our little group to tackle this issue.

EDIT

Sirion asked a good question in the Guild thread regarding what specific year in the FA we are setting this story in. I've quoted myself here:

In general, The Mithril Knights adventure in all four ages that have been described by Tolkien.

The current RP (this would have been better answered in the OOC thread, as it is specific to that story, so I will copy it there) is centered around the FA, after Elrond, Galadriel, Frodo, Bilbo, and Gandalf have departed, but we haven't been too specific beyond that. Other time clues are that Aragorn's plans for the rebuilding of the north Kingdom are just beginning. IMO, it isn't terribly important to name a specific year. Does anyone else have a thought on this?

I'll admit I have not read all of this thread but I think I got enough to speak on something. There seems to be real interest in joining the guild and I think this is a perfect time since we are reorganizing/re beginning /re building the whole hing anyway

I was here from the beginning, in fact Elbren joined the Bard's guild before starting the Kinghts and we talked about building both guilds way back whe A&G first came on the boards. Oreo and that other guy are charter members or at least they joined before I did so I had to start from scratch and join up the way anyone else would today.

If you want to join the Knights you need to demonstrate your level of writing skill. Doing the best you possibly can, you write your way in. an Applicante writes the story of his/her journey to a MK guildhouse to join up.

We need you to describe your character thorughly so we can "see" the person

We need enough background to get a feel for who your character is so we can see how they might fit in with the group.

We would want to see something that shows off the character's battle prowess, so we can see how you would fit into a battle and know how best to use the characer's talents, skills and personality in the Knight's adventures.

Upon arrival the applicant would be taken into the guild house and put in a room they are told is filled with many valuable, magical, etc items and that the person is to choose one. The applicant is left to fill the room giving a few descriptions of various items that could be found there. They also pick the item, they describe it, they give it whatever attributes, appearance they wish and they tell us why they chose it.

At this point the characterwould be told if they made a good choice or a bad choice and the person would be told if they should apply at another time or if they would be accepted as an Knight in Training or KIT as we call them

An established senior member would be volunteer to act as mentor for new applicants. (I have done it a few times myself and volunteer to do it again should we decide to accept any new applications.) and they would be given an assignment/adventure. this would be like a mini RP where the new applicants would have a thread and an OOC and basically do a small RP with the mentor knight sort of guiding and over seeing the whole thing and making sure it stayed tight and reasonably short.

Upon return to the guild house/compleation of the mission the KIT's would be told if they were to be accepted or not. We Knights throw a banquet and at some point during prefferably after a tankard or three, the KIT is put into a room that has a single candle the Knight's coat of arms and a large tapestry of some historic Middle Earth event.

What the tapestry is and how the character interacts with it is up to the applicant. At the end the character comes out of the room and rejoins the party. People will ask what happened in the room but no Knight ever answers this question.

OK That's how it used ta go (Oreo,ILE correct please if I got something wrong) and I think its a mighty fine system since we are beginning and sort of reintroducing everyone anyway I think it would be the most logical spot to let newbies joine up they could get to the new spot just like everyone and do the whole history/background stuff just like us. when we re group and start to adventure again we can follow the initiaiton things just as well the goslings could be given an assignment and they could be part of any expeditions and just be KIT's going along for the ride. if anyone needed more time to brush up and then reapply we would just write them as being left at the guild house when the Knights and KITs venture out again.

Just my 2 cents but I think someone did ask for'em 8)

EDIT  OK Guru Im gonna cut&paste this over in the guild thread

OK I got part of my post up. I think that shows who the bard is, or who he was because I think he just might be a little bit different at least this whole berserker thing is gonna be bothering him for a bit so this part of the post shows you The Bard befor so there's some contrast for the 'after'. I'm working on the rest of this and by time I'm done The Bard will be awake, and time enough for the council meeting, although he might show up a bit late.

Ya'll have been busy. I'm gonna go read the RP now.

Hue, thanks for putting that up in the Guild thread. I thought one of you older MK's :P might be up for it, but I wasn't comfortable answering for the Guild.

Vana, thanks for tweaking the post. I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure it's fine.

Well, it looks like it's up to me to get Dirk up to speed, which should be posted tonight. The rest of you have already put up awesome posts.

Then we just need to settle the questions:

1) Do we concur on the Cold Drake idea?

2) Are we going to take on a couple of new KiT's?

3) Do any of the "old" KiT's wish to jump in also? In which case we can do their initiations at Edoras, then have them post getting themselves to Mirkwood.

Then we can begin the council with the stranger's testimony. (I'd like to write this one under the Mithril Knights ID, unless someone's opposed.)
