The Lost Road. Question on translation.
Help to translate, please. I translate into Russian and I had difficulties. 
In the Lost Road there are words:
"Mariners in the old days said that the scent of lavaralda could be felt on the air long ere the land of Eressea could be seen, and that it brought a desire of rest and great content".
Last phrase interests:
"...a desire of rest and great content".
What did the author mean?
rest - rest, pacification, dream, eternal rest, death - or something else...
and
great content
great - lofty, big, grand, superior - or something else...
content - content, pleasure, satisfaction, joy - or something else...
It is difficult to understand, as words have some values and all of them can be equally applied in a story context.
Help to understand, please, that mean words: "rest" and "great content".

Here, "rest" means simply rest (like, one rests after a long workday), and "great content" would perhaps come closest to "deep satisfaction". The idea is that the scent made people want to rest and have a peace of mind.

These archaic expressions are sometimes a bit difficult to explain with modern terminology, but I'll try my best.
"Desire" here means "longing (or yearning) for something". A clumsy translation for "It brought a desire of rest and great content" here would perhaps be "It made [the mariners] long for resting and being at peace". I've never taken it as wanting to leave the confines of this world, but perhaps as getting a hint that there IS something good beyond this world.

I understand this to mean that when the mariners came too close to Eressea, they felt it's enchantment and spells reaching out. In Eressea, the people were happy and peaceful. They were able to relax all the time and enjoy life. The mariners who drew within its proximity felt a desire to live the same way.
Even though the word "desire" usually describes a strong emotion, I still think it is acceptable to apply it to such simple ideas as peace and happiness.
